Scout Picks Squad – Gameweek 21

We turn our attentions to next week’s Gameweek 21 matches now and give you an early heads-up on our Scout Picks thinking ahead of Tuesday evening’s deadline. This list of 22 players will also include some names in contention for a place in our Spot the Differential article, though will, of course, be subject to change, depending on the injury situation as the week unfolds.

For now, here’s the players currently on our radar…

Goalkeepers

Jack Butland (5.2) boasts 10 save and bonus points in as many starts, ensuring he’s the prime route into a Stoke City defence that’s carded eight clean sheets ahead of Norwich City’s visit. We’re also considering Palace stopper Wayne Hennessey (4.1), who is matched up against an Aston Villa attack that’s notched just three goals in five outings.

Defenders

With two clean sheets and a pair of assists in his last six, Toby Alderweireld (6.1) has amassed eight more points (95) than any defender this term, rendering him the premier source of Spurs defensive coverage as they prepare to host a Leicester City outfit that’s drawn three successive blanks and has doubts over Jamie Vardy’s fitness.

Ashley Williams (4.8) – who’s claimed maximum bonus points in all but one of the Swans’ five clean sheets this season – represents the best selection among a backline that silenced their opposition in three of the last four Gameweeks. Bolstering the Welshman’s Fantasy appeal, Swansea welcome a Sunderland side that’s tallied four goals in as many road ties.

Scott Dann (5.8) places joint-top among defenders for goals (three) and has been the shining light in a defence that recorded clean sheets in three of their previous five match-ups.

Branislav Ivanovic (6.5) has displayed renewed attacking verve since the appointment of Gus Hiddink, as evidenced by his first goal and assist of the campaign against Sunderland. Furthermore, Chelsea have impressed on the defensive front of late – registering back-to-back clean sheets – so are well-placed to stifle a West Brom team that mustered just three goals in their last four on the road.

With three assists to his name this term, Glen Johnson (5.3) offers the greatest capacity for attacking returns across the Potters’ rearguard. Elsewhere, Chris Smalling (6.8) remains the only secure route into United’s defence ahead of their road clash against Newcastle, who have failed to score since Gameweek 17.

West Ham United have proven a tough nut to crack since early December, chalking up four shut-outs in six outings. As such, Aaron Cresswell (5.5) piques our interest prior to a road encounter against Bournemouth, who have drawn blanks in their previous trio of fixtures. The former Ipswich Town full-back has accrued one goal and three assists and enjoys a share of the Hammers’ free-kicks.

Midfielders

Notwithstanding Yaya Toure’s recent flourish (three goals in four starts), Kevin De Bruyne (10.9) is our preferred City midfielder for the visit of Everton- the Belgian has served up 16 points in each of his last two home starts in the top-flight.

Marko Arnautovic (6.7) is in the midst of a purple patch (three goals in six) and will relish the prospect of facing a Norwich City defence that’s managed just three clean sheets all season.

Bagging two goals and an assist in four outings, Oscar (8.2) has emerged as a viable, mid-priced pick-up under the stewardship of Hiddink. Although Willian comes in cheaper than his Brazilian compatriot and is a skilled free-kick artist, Oscar arguably presents more of a threat from open play and also took Chelsea’s last spot-kick when Eden Hazard was on the pitch.

Riyad Mahrez (7.2) has posted three blanks on the trot but remains in our thoughts for Leicester’s trip to Tottenham, given he’s produced five sets of double-figures on his travels so far.

Mesut Ozil (10.0) has only failed to deliver Fantasy returns on two occasions across the last 14 Gameweeks, which bodes well for his attacking prospects at Anfield. Liverpool’s spate of defensive injuries will surely bolster his points potential.

Deli Alli (5.4) fell into the fifth-midfielder bracket earlier in the campaign but has since elevated his status with three goals and two assists in six starts. Aside from Harry Kane, the former MK Dons starlet is establishing himself as the choice route into a Lilywhites offense that’s tallied eight goals in four match-ups ahead of the visit of Leicester.

West Ham racked up five goals in their previous three fixtures and Michail Antonio (5.2) played a part (two goals and assists) in four of those, cementing his right-wing berth. The budget wide man – and the Irons’ offense as a whole – will doubtless profit from Dmitri Payet’s return to action, given that the Frenchman possess the second-best key-pass frequency (one every 23.4 minutes) of any midfielder this term.

Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson earns the nod for the visit of Sunderland. Having bagged the consolation at United last weekend, the Icelandic international will be looking to justify the underlying stats – he sits top amongst midfielders for shots on target (eight) over the last five Gameweeks.

Forwards

Sergio Aguero (13.1) snapped his barren streak with an authoritative header against Watford, portending a return to form that has already prompted 37,000 Fantasy managers to snap up the explosive marksman for Man City’s home encounter against Everton. The fact that the Toffees conceded eight goals over the last four Gameweeks strengthens Aguero’s case for inclusion in our Scout Squad.

With three goals and one assist in his last two starts, Diego Costa (10.7) has thrust himself back into relevancy on the Fantasy scene. Fuelled by a renewed confidence and determination to impress the newly-installed boss, the irascible frontman could well punish a Baggies defence that notched a solitary clean sheet in their previous 10 outings.

Harry Kane (9.8) has grabbed braces in two of his past four home starts ahead of this weekend’s visit of Leicester. Everton’s trip to the Etihad promises to be a testing match-up, but Romelu Lukaku (9.3) is pitted against a Sky Blues rearguard that hasn’t secured a home clean sheet since Gameweek 4.

Watford’s top scorer Odion Ighalo (6.3) has netted in every fixture bar one since Gameweek 14 and travels to face a floundering Southampton outfit that’s mustered one win in eight match-ups.

On Standby

In addition to the standout players detailed above, there are a half-dozen recruits who are on the periphery of our thinking but could yet make the cut.

West Ham’s upturn in form brings Andy Carroll (6.4) and Dmitri Payet (7.7) into contention. The former has scored in consecutive starts and tallied three more shots on target (seven) than any forward during that time frame, while the latter averaged 6.2 points per appearance prior to picking up his ankle injury.

Yohan Cabaye (6.5) returns from suspension to face a Villains squad that’s registered just one clean sheet at home. Elsewhere in the capital, Willian (7.1) notched one goal and four assists in his previous four outings and charts top among Chelsea’s midfield contingent for shots on target (10).

A move up top for last week’s trip to United suggests Andre Ayew (11) may benefit from an advanced berth for Sunderland’s visit. Georginio Wijnaldum (6.9) is without a goal in five starts yet places top among midfielders for shots inside the box (nine) since Gameweek 17, with a move to a central support role strengthening the Dutchman’s appeal.

The Community Champion

Having scrapped the weekly vote idea from last season, we now operate a lottery system to pick our weekly candidates. The community member who beats our picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season. Red Devil leads the way after beating the Picks by 25 points in Gameweek 17.

Gameweek 21’s Community Champion as selected by our lottery, is Lateriser12. He is currently ranked 77,547th and his highest finish in his seven years as a FPL manager was in 2012/13, where he ended the season 189th in the overall rankings.

In addition to a shot at the £100 Amazon prize, FantasyBet are offering a chance for further prizes to Community Champions that are eligible to play their games. More details can be found here.

Money isn't the issue for me in that sense. It's more selling someone playing well and who i've made lots of £ on. I have no doubt the time for Aguero will come, and perhaps it's arrived now, but i just don't feel the urge to get him in at any cost when fit, like i would've done in previous seasons. Something's changed

                • 10 Years
                8 years, 4 months ago

Yeah it is harder when your others are performing but again the making lots of £ doesn't really matter, I've already cashed out on Kane and KdB once each. His underlyings are as strong as ever the only thing is he overperformed last year and underperformed so far this year according to the underlying data and I think its this disconnect between the two seasons that makes it feel more different than it probably is.

Many will disagree with me but having 5 strong midfielders is so pointless in my opinion. Of course the way it works is that you have the option of rotating midfielder 4/5 depending on who has the most preferable fixture on any given gameweek. However, I think many are exaggerating the idea that players can't score in hard fixtures, and as we saw with Alli at the weekend, it certainly is possible and happens often. Your best bet is surely to have your favorite midfield 4 that you think will get most points, and just stick with it? That way you're guaranteed to get all their points and you can invest the money elsewhere into a starting XI player. I've never really understood the merit of 5 strong midfielders as, although on paper the squad may look strong, in reality there is money sat on the bench each week that could have been used to upgrade a weekly XI starter. That's just me though.

For me regardless of money I still think it's a bad idea. Just no guarantee that because someone is playing the easy fixture that they will score more points. I did rotation a bit with keepers and it put me off for life. The idea and theory sounds great but in reality I was constantly choosing the one with the best fixture, only for the other to get the points. Hypothetically speaking I could have perhaps got 30 points from sticking with one GK but due to rotation I only got 20.

Couldn't agree anymore. I briefly had 5 decent mids and benched Mahrez one week for his brace and max bonus points. Deciding who to bench each week is a nightmare. I have always been of the option that four solid mids and one decent bench is the way to go.

        4. F_Ivanovic

But this season there has been money for 5 strong midfielders - no point having a bench fodder mid and 2/3m in bank that you can get someone better for. Having a benching headache is a good thing, not a bad thing.

I don't see it that way. I see benching headaches as opportunities to drop points, losing out of the maximum yield you could get from a player. Alli and Aldeweireld at the weekend are just two examples of this.

            1. F_Ivanovic
              • 8 Years
              8 years, 4 months ago

Hindsight is a wonderful thing! There were some FPL managers that played alli and benched a more expensive mid that worked out for them. Had they gone with a bench fodder 5th mid then they'd have been forced to play the mid that they would have benched and come out 6 points worse off.

Of course it sucks to make a benching mistake but it doesn't half feel sweet when you get it right. And with more players to get points you should still come out better even if you do occasionally bench a mid that gets you points - that's always going to happen.

          3. Mr Alex
            • 9 Years
            8 years, 4 months ago

However, if you have a strong fifth midfielder who is just sitting on the bench I don't see a problem with that. But when people try and get clever with rotating according to fixtures (I do kinda understand games like MCity away though), that's when things begin to backfire really badly, as players, like we have seen time and time again this season, aren't restricted to scoring points in easy fixtures.

Yeah there could be but generally Everton are more solid at the back against "better" teams because they don't play so open & attacking. They'll likely concede 1 it's just whether Costa is the beneficiary or not.

But yeah the 3 fixtures after that will be even tougher.

yep, it's a sound plan, just a simple downgrade back to lukaku when his tougher games are over, and in the meantime sail up the rankings should Costa fire, and even then Costa might be worth holding onto haha!

Didn't actually see the Lukaku injury. Was it bad?

Because if he is ruled out of the City game, with the Chelsea game only four days later surely that will make him a major doubt for that too?

        I've just wildcarded.

It's been keeping me up for three straight nights, so it had to be done. Couldn't keep on like this for 14 more gameweeks.

        Butland - Elliot
        Bellerin - Azpilicueta - Williams - Evans - Daniels
De Bruyne - Ozil - Payet - Mahrez - Stanislas
        Aguero - Kane - Lukaku

        0.5 ITB

Elliot chosen for potential Newcastle DGW, otherwise would have went Rudd. Contemplating ditching Butland and going ultra cheap with Hennessey along with Elliot. Liking the look of my defence with Bellerin and Azpi as the main ones (easy to switch to Spurs/City defenders if needed) and an excellent three way rotation with Williams, Evans and Daniels. If Lukaku is out then hello Ighalo, which will also tempt me into going Costa over Kane.

Will be a challenge to navigate the blanks and DGWs of course, but that's a challenge I'm glad to take on. My abilities to plan will be greatly tested.

        Thoughts DZ? Cheers.

if you go Costa over Kane, you might be tempted to include Alli.

It might put you back to the writing board. 🙂

Main reason I wanted to wildcard was to restructure as I've been heading towards a way too strong front eight along with a way too strong defence that would just've been a 40 point bench waiting to happen, so I want to keep a clear 5th mid and not bring Alli back in.

            Thanks 🙂

These all fairly random thoughts so I'll just bullet them, feel free to ask further on any point

          • Elliotts better than Rudd anyway
          • Butland and Elliott could both have a blank in 27
          • Get Kosc over Bellerin
          • Smith is cheaper and better than Daniels at Bournemouth
          • It feels odd looking at a defence with neither Man U nor Spurs in it
          • Midfield is absolutely fine
          • Forwards fine too and absolutely template
          • Watch out for Lukaku news over the next fews days

I'll give them numbers to make it easier for me to reply then:

1: I agree, but I'll play Butland almost every week, so could probably be better off with the 0.1
2: I'm aware of that, but I think it's highly unlikely that Stoke manage to turn the tables at Anfield. But the risk might lead me to going Hennessey instead of one of them, preferably Butland for the cash
3: Think he's worth the extra cash? Kosc getting rotated over Christmas worries me, makes me think it could happen again in a midweek fixture
4: I'm just worried that Elphick will take Smith's place, and those spot kick duties Daniels apparantly has tempts me. Think Smith's really nailed?
5: Don't fancy any of the United defensive options, and would only want Toby from Spurs (feel like the fullbacks are at risk of rotation in midweek fixtures, and Dier gets lots of YC and zero bonus) but at 6.1?

            And cheers on the rest.

              1) Fair enough
              2) Stick on Elliot, I'm with you on Stoke not making but just be aware of the risk
              3) Definitely, better for baps and attacking threat
              4) Its tricky, Smith has been playing well enough to keep it but Elphick is the club captain...
              5) Walker's under no threat so I'd fancy him if Toby is too much.

4: I'm tempted for sure, but the uncertainty puts me off given I won't be able to WC for the rest of the season now. Definately don't want to be stuck with non-playing defenders as I'll look to spend most of my transfers in attack. I've even looked at my three-way-rotation to make sure I can (theoretically) keep it for the season.
5: Walker was rested in GW19, though, and that makes me wary ahead of the many midweek games that are about to hit us. Could be worth the slight risk at that price.

I've actually used your lovely BAP Hunting SS as a guide when looking for defenders once I started fiddling with the idea of a WC this week, hence going Evans over Dawson for example. Kinda ignored Arsenal though as I have some funds tied up in Bellerin. Will have a closer look at him v Kosc over the next week.

Well thank you, and yes, I agree; It was nice. But I made a glaring error yesterday bringing in Payet for Ramsey when what I should've done was Ramsey & Vardy -> Stanislas & Aguero after cup games. Because my defence was too expensive, the Payet transfer left me with a defensive -4 as the only possible Aguero makeweight, and therefore I wanted to make a complete restructurization of my team.

                  haha! your certainly not alone.

Ok, team i had settled on is this:

                  Butland - Elliot
                  R. Bennet - Bellerin - Toby - Williams - Simpson
                  Ozil - KDB - Alli - Payet - Mahrez
                  Kane - Aguero - Costa

Always switching my defence up with Bellerin/Koscielny, and Azpi/Williams at the sacrifice of my mid and keeper, as have been toying with the idea of Lloris and stanislas at the expense.

A second team i did a few days ago looked like this:

                    Hennessey - Rudd
                    Kos - Toby - Ivanovic - R. Bennet - Simpson
Sanchez (when fit) - KDB - Payet - Alli - Stanislas
                    Kane - Aguero - Costa

Thing is this involves no Mahrez, and best sticking with Ozil anyway before Sanchez might start firing. Plus i think i'm 0.1 short of this now anyway as McCarthy dropped the other night.

I'll just reply to this post.

I'd be very uncomfortable with both Simpson and Bennett in my team. As you don't mention your strikers I guess you're pretty set on them, and although they're expensive, it looks a great trio for the upcoming weeks. Would be worried about no Lukaku though.

What I'd do (if you're dead set on that frontline that is) is Toby -> Dier/Walker and Bennett -> someone that rotates well with Williams and Simpson.

But nice team(s) 🙂 You've got high TV surely?

                      cheers man really appreciate it.

Yeah i'm not comfortable with bennet and simpson in the team to be honest.
i would really like to stick with that front line, i could always keep lukaku though and play a fifth mid if he plays.
Good advice though maybe considering dier or walker to replace toby, really dont wanna let him go though...argghh! decisions haha!
yeah TV is quite high at around 109.5 or something.

Will take all this on board and see how the rest of this weeks games play out, i think it makes sense to keep lukaku now then after this, and just work out my defence. Cheers man.

Main thing is if you want to keep that frontline, you have to take funds from elsewhere to upgrade Bennett or Simpson, as having both will likely end in tears. If you keep Lukaku then stick with Toby IMO.

Could luck on your WC, will keep an eye out for updates 😉

                          Bellerin - Alderweireld - Azpilicueta
                          Ozil - KDB - Payet - Mahrez
