The final installment in our Watchlist refresh round-up has us examining the options up front, where we find the clamour for the template lineup is en vogue. Such is the form of the heavy-hitters, our forward lines almost pick themselves with five clear candidates emerging – Robin van Persie is, however, not amongst them.

There’s little argument that Fantasy managers need to consider arming themselves with a Liverpool striker. The dilemma is, of course, which of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge should be the target. Right now, it’ s almost impossible to separate the two but, for now, we’re coming down on the side of Sturridge, with his Uruguayan strike partner showing just a little bit of rust when it comes to his shooting on his two-goal return at the Stadium of Light.

Sturridge delivered both of Suarez’s goals on a platter in the 3-1 win, earning himself a brace of assists to go with a first-half goal. That demonstrated that the England man could keep pace with Suarez and, for now, with the price difference favouring Sturridge, that’s enough to just give him the edge. Saturday’s events at Anfield could swing that back to Suarez, however.

Those two top the Watchlist rankings, leaving United’s Wayne Rooney and Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud to battle it out for our attentions. A slight injury concern and David Moyes’ obvious options to rotate Rooney in the weeks to come just give Giroud the edge, with the Frenchman holding in third following his assist in the win at Swansea. The Gunners man is without a goal in his last two and will need to get back in the saddle at West Brom this weekend if he is to avoid a sudden cull, such is the competition for a place in our forward lines.

Romelu Lukaku’s emergence in Monday night’s 3-2 win over Newcastle added to that fierce scramble for our striker slots. The Belgian is, without question, a major consideration given his form and price point. Enthusiasm is tempered somewhat by the trip to City this weekend but, following that, the Goodison clash with Hull will surely lead to increased investment. While he doesn’t boast the kind of favourable fixtures that bless the Liverpool pairing and Rooney, we’ve every reason to believe that Lukaku will prove a handful for any rearguard and offer points potential that could well keep pace with the heavy-hitters currently ranking above him.

That all means that both Robin van Persie and Roberto Soldado drop out of our top five. For Van Persie, his recent lack of pitch time has been hugely damaging. With Rooney scoring consistent points via his dead-ball strikes, the outlay for Van Persie can hardly be justified, particularly given the current trend that makes three strong scoring forwards the tactic of choice. Those holding the United man will need to see an upturn in form that surpasses Rooney and the Liverpool pair for him to prevent more owners from jumping ship. Blank at Sunderland and we would anticipate major sales over the international break.

Soldado is another striker of huge potential who is currently struggling to convince. The two spot-kick goals that opened the season perhaps disguised the fact that the Spaniard was taking his time to adjust. Spurs are creating chances, they’re just not resulting in goals and, while we see an upturn in fortunes for Soldado, it’s questionable if he can currently be backed above the established form strikers right now.

Indeed, there’s a strong argument that both Rickie Lambert and Loic Remy should be above the Spurs man in our rankings. Both notched in Gameweek 6, with Remy now having scored three in three matches for Alan Pardew’s Magpies. Lambert has the fixtures to boost his tally further, with St Mary’s meetings with Swansea, Fulham and Hull in the next five. Remy is not so blessed and will need to show fixture proof form in his next two home encounters with Liverpool and Chelsea.

The 7.5 spend on either Lambert or Remy could, arguably, be the minimum outlay on a forward right now given the consistency in the higher price brackets. Budget options are available but perhaps not advisable as investments. Cardiff’s Frazier Campbell has fixtures that could see him add to his two-goal tally thus far, although there is some threat from Peter Odemwingie here if Malky Mackay chooses to field Craig Bellamy and bring the Nigerian inside.

With Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez an uncertain starter, it leaves us looking at Darren Bent of Fulham at 6.5, Andreas Weimann of Villa at 6.0 and Sone Aluko of Hull at 5.0 as options. West Brom’s Saido Berahino, at just 4.5 in the FPL, is another candidate to monitor. Offering a rock-bottom budget option, if he can cement a starting role over both Nicolas Anelka and Shane Long, he would certainly provide an option for those requiring to free up frunds from their forward line.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Found a quote on the Rooney and RVP situation "bit of a sore toe": He better play!!!!!

Rooney is awaiting a late test on an injured shin. The striker did not play in the 1-1 Champions League draw at Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday after which Moyes stated he was hopeful of him recovering and being available for Saturday's thetrip to Sunderland.

The manager said: "I'm not more sure or less sure [than then]. I've just not seen him yet this [Friday] morning since he came in. I think he's responding well to treatment, he's had a lot of treatment on his shin and I'm hopeful he'll be OK."

Asked if Van Persie was fit, after he was seen limping after the draw with Donetsk, the manager said: "I think so, he's got a bit of a sore toe so I've not seen him either; [it won't be] until this afternoon."

    Scout Picks this week:

    - Cost 105.2m, which is the most expensive so far this season.
    - Last week's picks earnt 32 points (not counting captain double points), with 18 on the bench.
    - Includes just 3 debutants this week, which is the lowest so far this season (in addition, all 3 players on the bench make their debut appearances)
    - The average PPG of players picked (whilst in the scout picks) is just 2.01.
    - Boruc has now been picked 5 times, the joint highest this season (along with Walcott)
    - Sunderland are the only team not to be represented at all in the Picks this season.
    - Benteke has earned the most points on behalf of the Picks, with 27 points from 3 appearances.
    - Baines and Vidic both made their debut apperances in the Scout Picks last week, and both earned zero points. Of all the players picked, they are the only players to contribute no points to the Picks points tally,

They are probably doing a lot better. The players on the bench would be downgraded with 100m was the rule. The Scout picks should be 83m or less to be relevant.

301 points in total, not counting auto-subs. However, they don't comply with formation or budget constraints, or hits from one week to the next, so it's not really comparable to a real team.

Mark wasn't so happy with drawing attention to these stats, because the picks are only supposed to be a guide rather than a viable team selection.

Nonetheless I've done something similar for the last few gameweeks:

I don't get your point of criticism of the scout picks. For me they are just one more opinion on a gw where anything could happen and anyone could get lucky on their selection. I never figured that team was ever going to be spot on but should always be seen as a 'rate my team' as all of ours are. Always enjoy reading it though and hopefully it will continue.

I'm not making any criticisms whatsoever, I've just stated some facts about the picks' record.

If you've interpreted it as criticism, that's just a reflection on how well (or not) they have actually done.

          understand Mark's point

however, every week they tout their successful scout picks in later articles without ever acknowledging those that didn't work out, so fair play to you

it seems important to realize that an imaginary team with a free wild-card every week and some of the best pros deciding who is on it don't always do all that well

Fair point. It's easy to go for a bunch of punts when it's not your actual team you're selecting for. I bet if they were picking for their actual teams, they would be a lot more conservative with their choices.

I’m very happy to Hot Topic this because it gives me the opportunity to put across some reasoning and explanation behind the picks – to hopefully offer clarity to how they are put together and what the thinking is behind them.

The Picks are not and never will be our choice of the best 11 or best squad of 14 for the Gameweek. The picks have always been about attempting to advise folk on the best players in a given Gameweek. Why don’t these two go hand in hand? Well…

This week is a case in point. If I wanted the picks to score the most points as a team, I’d probably opt for two Tottenham defenders – I’d go Lloris and Vertonghen or Walker and Vertonghen. We don’t do this because I like to ensure that the Picks always include our choice of the 4, 5 or sometimes 6 defences that we think are most likely to earn a clean sheet. We then pick our choice of the best defender in those teams. We don’t’ double up with our choices.

So, next week, when United face Hull at Old Trafford, if I wanted the picks to score well as a team, I’d probably use the three United slots up and go with Vidic, Ferdinand and RvP or perhaps De Gea in goal. That would likely get the picks the most points as a team but would it help the visitor?

We’ve already outlined the United defence as a good pick by opting for one defender – is it best to score the picks the most points or help the visitor out by naming more defences to consider? I’d argue the latter. However, that’s going to mean that the Picks are never, collectively as a team, going to score as well.

Also, we don’t have budget constraints because I believe they would force us to compromise on selection of players. For example, this week we may have to have gone Walker for Vertonghen or Terry for Ivanovic – not because we felt they were the best players but because they meant the picks hit a set budget. Again, does this help the visitor? Are we right to recommend Walker over Vertonghen when the only reason we’ve done that is to solve our own puzzle created by the budget. I don’t think so. Similarly, do we want to be left with 3.9 to spend on a bench player so we’re forced to recommend Faye, not because he’s our choice but because we have to due to budget. To me, that would be a selection only to help us fit the budget, not to help the visitor looking for a pick for their defence.

Finally, we also apply the unwritten rule of not doubling up when possible and therefore to ensure that we recommend a good spread of players and teams. This week again, it might be better for me to opt for Ramsey and Ozil in midfield. They might score the Picks more points but I think it’s more beneficial to the reader to have Whittingham in there – it offers advice at the bottom end of the budget scale and also states that Cardiff could be worth backing this week. Why have two Arsenal midfielders when we already have Ozil – it might get the Scout Picks more points and make me feel even more smug later but is it helping the visitor?

All these things are unwritten rules that I apply when I make the final selection but they all combine to make it invalid to take the Scout Picks as a team designed to score the most points possible.

Folk can go on doing analysis of their performance – that’s fine but there needs to be an understanding as to how the picks are put together and the reasoning behind them. Personally, I think the constant drive to assess them as a team is counter productive to the objective I use when I select them. I could change but I think it would be to the detriment of how the picks are used for the reasons outlined above.

Completely agree with your reasoning, and I actually I agree with the methodology.

Nonetheless, I hope you don't object to my analysis, because I think it is interesting to see the results of selection by committee.

It might help if you retained the above rationale somewhere it won't get lost within a couple of days, as there will constantly be questions and sniping about the performance of the Scout Picks.

I think both your analysis and Mark's explanation are useful. The picks are a good guide but people should also use their own research, thoughts, planning and gut feelings as well.

Thanks for what you're analysis in the previous 'Hot Topic', I gave you a well deserved +1!

After saying that, I feel this may be a bit of cherry picking though...

I'm unsure that looking at just six weeks of the this season, under a new set of bonus point rules is enough to really determine the worth of the Scout Picks.

I would be very interested to see how they've faired over the past 3/4 seasons, as I feel that would be a much better measure of their accuracy; don't you?

Again, thanks for your hard work, this is the kind of stuff that helps us all in our respective mini-leagues.

Great post, and thank you for taking the time to explain.

I would say if you're going to tout the successful scout picks in other articles, as is done now, then you can't be put off by criticisms of those picks that don't work.

The website is a success and growing, with that comes criticism. Sometimes criticism just needs to be allowed, and doesn't mean it is right or wrong.

Again, much obliged for the insight into the thought process behind the picks.

I don't mind the criticism at all - the picks have always had lots for a long time and I don't take that to heart but I just happened to be thinking about putting an explanation up later this morning with the pre-amble because when we selected them this week, there was quite a discussion in the team about the methodolgy. When I browsed this thread on my phone whilst in bed I thought I'd strike while the iron was hot.

I wanted to add as well that the committee members also base their arguments for players they want on on lots of statistics. For example this week I was pleased to see Sessegnon in there as he's been very impressive and attacking over the last couple of weeks.

I was one of those less keen on Moses in the committee but I can see why he's there as it offers a cheaper route into the Liverpool attack for those without any Liverpool coverage or those wanting to boost their Liverpool contingent to take advantage of this fixture and their good run.

As Mark says the scout picks are more than picking the best 11, they are about presenting people with a range of options for that week.

Great to get the rationale, but It's still misleading. It should be called 'Scoutpicks Punts of the week' - or something similar.

The casuals will transfer these players in as the mods here clearly know so much, only what they don't know is that these are actually differentials. 2PPG is not doing the team justice, even when the start of the season's been as unpredictable as it is.

This is just my opinion, it's a great function that I've used a few times, but if it's confusing perhaps change the name or the method to clear the confusion.

I think the fact is, the picks article is confusing, not particularly helpful, and doesn't really have a good deal of trust - as it doesn't perform (by design or otherwise).

And the totalfpl picks rarely stray away from squad rule, whilst kicking the scout picks consistently into touch - which article would you rather pay attention to?

    Migs-Boruc
    Walker-Cameron-Davies-Shaw-B. Turner
    Ozil-Barkley-Whittingham-Amalfitano-

Next gameweek my team have some sexy fixtures. Assuming I'm not alone in this respect. I predict points on the bench because I'll need to bench someone like Barkley/ Coleman at home to hull.

These are my favourite types of dilemma though!

Sorry for the repost but i didnt get any comments
Worth a four point hit to get in ozil and rosenior for Coloccini and Walcott, or should i just get in Michu for Walcott without the hit. Or if you would take take a hit, should I turn Hazard and Walcott to Mata and Michu?

That'll give you a cool 62.5% of the Captain's poll on your team.

Wish someone was keeping track of how the top 3 in the Captain's poll did each week like the 3rdTurd does with scout picks, would be interesting to know how accurate the herd is.
