Moving Target

Moving Target – Jordon Mutch

After strengthening his defence with the acquisition of Rio Ferdinand and Steven Caulker, Harry Redknapp’s third signing of the summer saw Jordon Mutch arrive at QPR from Cardiff City. The midfielder has signed a four-year deal with the Loftus Road outfit and follows former Bluebirds team-mate Caulker back into the Premier League just three months after the Welsh club dropped down into the Championship.

Discussing his move with the R’s official website, Mutch was delighted to be given the chance to prove himself in the English top-flight once again:

“I don’t see a better place for me than QPR at the moment. The club is heading in the right direction and I’m really excited about the season ahead. I thought I had a good first season in the Premier League last year with Cardiff, so I was delighted when QPR came in for me and offered a route back to the top flight. I’m really happy to be here and hopefully we can do well this season.”

The History

Mutch spent five years in the Derby County youth system before moving to Birmingham City as a 15-year-old in 2007. Handed his debut by the St Andrews outfit the following year, Mutch was then confined to a wheelchair for three months after his rapid rate of growth caused fractures in both feet.

Fully recovered, he was sent out on loan to Hereford Town (four appearances) and Doncaster Rovers (two goals in 17 league games) in 2009/10 before being farmed out to Watford the following season, where he netted five times and provided six assists in 23 matches. Mutch was unable to convince the Blues of his worth, though, and, after a total of two goals and nine assists in 36 outings, was sold to Cardiff in June 2012.

The midfielder’s first season with the Bluebirds was far from impressive, though. Mutch failed to produce any returns over 22 Championship appearances and was far from our Fantasy radars when the Welsh outfit arrived in the Premier League last summer. Initially, his Fantasy fortunes looked non-existent after he was handed just one minute’s game time in the opening five matches but Mutch’s eye for goal prevailed, as he proceeded to serve up seven goals and five assists over the course of his first year in the English top division.

On the international stage, the 22-year-old has featured at youth level a total of nine times for England but is yet to make the step up to the senior side.

The Prospects

There’s no doubt Redknapp requires a goal-getting presence in midfield to take the pressure off Charlie Austin up front. Last season, Junior Hoilett was top scoring midfielder for the R’s with just four goals in 38 Championship appearances and although the Canadian has impressed over the summer, Redknapp’ admitted Mutch’s record in the Premier League was a big factor in persuading him to splash the cash:

“Jordon’s a fine young player, with a big, big future. He’s already shown what he can do at this level with Cardiff last season with a decent goals return – and this move will provide him with a great platform to take his game on to the next level. He wants to learn and improve his game. He’s a good pro with a great attitude and this is a big opportunity for him at QPR.”

Despite being limited to 2,399 minutes for the Bluebirds last year, Mutch still managed a total of 55 attempts last year. This equates to 43.6 minutes per shot – put into perspective, it’s just behind Eden Hazard (41.5), Christian Eriksen (42.2) and David Silva (42.4). In terms of minutes per goal, the QPR new boy’s average of 342.7 minutes in 2013/14 was quicker than the likes of Adam Lallana and Juan Mata (355.8) and underlines his potential.

Indeed, Mutch’s arrival looks to put pressure on Hoilett for the season ahead. A recent change in tactics has seen Redknapp roll out a 3-4-1-2 formation over the summer, with Hoilett stationed behind the front pair, but the Canadian may be forced out wide or even onto the bench if the R’s boss turns to the more prolific Mutch to take up the role in “the hole”.

After proving himself as a genuine budget option last term, Mutch could be set for further investment once again. Yet to be listed in the Fantasy games, a cost of 5.5 (the same as Adel Taarabt) looks the likeliest scenario in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game on the back of last season’s heroics for the Bluebirds – more expensive than the likes of Hoilett and Joey Barton (5.0), for example, but as the numbers above suggest, Mutch’s frequency of attempts is more in line with pricier alternatives.

With home encounters against Hull, Sunderland and Stoke in the first five Gameweeks, Redknapp’s side have a decent opening run in front of their own fans. Certainly, trips to Spurs and United dent their opening appeal but, bearing in mind Mutch scored three times against Liverpool and also netted against Chelsea last season, it’s fair to say that Redknapp’s new acquisition has already shown signs that he’s more than capable of rising to the occasion.

Since the resident Stoke fan (there is only one around on this website apparently) is a hard creature to find, I have taken it upon myself to search through Stoke’s forums and recent games to see whether we can make sense of who will play and where.

Here are the players that played during the pre-season games.

STOKE vs SCHALKE: Begovic; Wilson, Shawcross (c), Huth, Pieters; Whelan, Ireland, Nzonzi; Bojan, Diouf, Arnautovic. Subs: Butland, Teixeira, Muniesa, Shotton, Ness, Palacios, Shea, Adam, Crouch.

STOKE vs 1860 (First Half): Sorensen; Wilkinson (Bardsley 34), Shawcross (c), Wilson, Muniesa; Shotton, Whelan, Bojan, Ireland, Arnautovic; Diouf.
(Second Half): Bachmann; Bardsley (Ness 65), Huth, Teixeira, Pieters; Walters, Sidwell, Nzonzi, Adam, Shea; Crouch.

STOKE vs BURTON ALBION: Butland, Shotton, Teixeira, Cameron (c) (Watkins 45), Wheeler, Odemwingie (Alabi 45), Palacios (Shenton 60), Sidwell, Ness, Shea, Jerome. Unused: Eve, Ward, Taylor.

STOKE CITY vs BLACKBURN: Begovic (Sorensen 45); Bardsley, Shawcross (Wilson 63), Huth, Muniesa (Pieters 74); Arnautovic (Ireland 45), Nzonzi, Adam (Whelan 63), Walters; Diouf, Crouch (Bojan 45). Unused: Ward.

STOKE vs REAL BETIS: Begovic; Bardsley (Teixeira 86), Shawcross (c) (Cameron 46), Wilson, Pieters (Muniesa 64 (Huth 84)); Whelan (Adam 70), Nzonzi (Sidwell); Bojan (Walters 79), Ireland, Arnautovic (Crouch 79); Diouf (Odemwingie 46). Sub not used: Butland.

    Notes:
Begovic will be first choice. It is obvious Butland and Sorensen are just getting some game time.

Shawcross is the guaranteed player in the centre. Captain, he is a safe bet, but at 5.5, a bit pricey.

This leads me onto Huth. Many are unsure due to him coming back from a long spell of injury, and whilst there are several players that can challenge for his spot, pre-season dictates that the Huth is only likely to rejoin Shawcross, rather than a guaranteed starter.

Muniesa and Pieters are still battling it out. I would stay away from both, but have a feeling Muniesa is going to edge ahead in the season, much like Adrien did to Jaaskelinan at West Ham.

Likewise, Bardsley has obviously been brought in to play some part, but may not make the position his own straight away. Injuries aside, Wilson could be fielded there and as a holding midfielder.
A possible 4-4-2 with two forwards is on the cards, with Diouf being partnered by either Crouch or Bojan centrally.

Nzonzi should see his role reprised in the centre of the park, at the top of the pecking order, including above Sidwell. In all likelihood they will be paired together in the holding role.

Ireland may still have some part to play in this new Stoke side, but perhaps as a substitute more than anything else. The likely front 4 would see Arnautovic and Odemwingie flank Diouf, with Bojan behind, although the supporting 3 can fill in wherever required across the front.

Charlie Adam is first on penalties, but if not on the pitch, the role could be handed to either Arnautovic or Odemwingie.

    TONIGHTS FRIENDLY:

Wilson played the entire match at centre halve with Shawcross, who was substituted at half time.

Pieters netted from the left back position, but was replaced mid-way through the second half by Muniesa, who unfortunately picked up a slight injury (apparently not too serious),but still worth monitoring however.

Bojan scored, again, whilst also being involved for the Pieters goal build up play. It is hard to ignore his form, and has played as well as his Barca origins have allowed him to.

Diouf and Crouch missed chances apparently, so the creative aspect of Stoke is there (who would have thought it???).

Begovic played well, regardless of the times the woodwork saved his clean sheet.

A giant post on Stoke with no Cameron discussion? What's up, dawg?

Appreciate your effort though, pretty much convinced me that it's not worth jumping into the Stoke defense from the off with no clear options at 5.0 or less in the back 4.

I still have Huth in my team. Really the only safe options are Begovic and Shawcross. Since my budget isnt having any of that chatter, I'll go with Huth, with the possibility of downgrading one of my 4.5 defenders to a 4.0 non player and upgrading to a 5.5

A massive benching to be had of Stokes defensive assets will occur! I'll be going with them from the off, quite impressive pre-season and end of season.

Really depends on your other players. Bojan is doing the business scoring goals, but he is a forward, and I'm not a subscriber to rotating attacking players.

If anything Arnie or Odem on the back of last season, but really its either Bojan or the defence to target.

It makes it difficult that there are so few loud supporters out there to offer us advice. Plenty of people know their City's from United's, but so few know about the little Potter that could!

As mentioned above, its not really about cover, there are only a few idefinites out there. In defence you go for Shawcross or Begovic, in attack you go Bojan, with the flair picks of Arnie and Odem.

Its like attempting to 'cover' Liverpool, and not having Suarez.

I'd really avoid Wilson if I were you, unless you have not intention of playing him, or like 1 pointers. Because of his flexibility, he can play anywhere, it just means that he hasn't specialised and will fill in when injuries occur.

one thing you didn't mention that is actually pretty crucial is that although he's bound to get plenty of game time, sidwell's place is under severe threat from whelan and others. the majority of stoke fans on their message board don't seem sure where sidwell's going to fit in, and they're full of praise for whelan's exploits last season. check out this thread, for example: http://oatcakefanzine.proboards.com/thread/232743/which-players-league-starts-season

good early fixtures and many people's tip for overachiever status.

Manchester United have moved back in front of Barcelona in the chase to sign Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen. Barcelona looked to have taken pole position in the race to sign the 28-year-old Belgium international on Tuesday when they made a bid of £10million for the player. However, Sky sources have revealed that United are Vermaelen’s preferred destination and they will have no problem matching or beating Barca’s offer.

Oddly, their defensive strength seemed to stem from having quality up the park. Probably a case of keeping the ball more and preventing full backs from attacking them too much.

Think they'll be middle of the road, good enough to rotate

Take away penalty saves and Krul's only about 25 points behind the heavy hitting goal keepers last season. So I figure, a little Newcastle improvement and a lucky penalty save and I'm keeping pace with the heavy hitters, or worst case scenario giving up 10-15 points (From now until January) for an extra .5-1.5 million.
