634x258 Great Expectations

After breaking into the Liverpool first-team under Brendan Rodgers in 2012/13, hopes were high that Raheem Sterling would announce himself as a major contender for our Fantasy teams last season. The youngster’s fortunes suffered at the start of the campaign, though, and while Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge tore opposition back lines apart, Sterling fell down the pecking order – over the first 12 Gameweeks, he mustered just one start and six second-half sub appearances for the Merseysiders.

A tactical tweak from Rodgers brought the teenager back into the first-team frame. Sterling subsequently started 23 of the remaining 26 league outings and was drafted off the bench in the other three fixtures, underlining just how crucial he became as the Anfield outfit finished second behind champions Manchester City after scoring 101 goals.

Key Factors

    • This time around, there seems no doubt Sterling will have a significant part to play. With Suarez departing for Barcelona and Sturridge’s propensity for injuries already forcing him out action, the teenager has so far struck twice during the club’s tour of the US. A series of displays have already persuaded 23% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to snap up the midfielder, with Rodgers enthusing after a recent game against United:

“I thought Sterling was outstanding, a real threat. The intensity in his game, how he presses the ball, and technically he’s very aware for a young player. When he runs at defenders he creates many opportunities. At 19 years of age he’s a young talent and getting better all the time.”

    • Rodgers’ tactical tinkering works in the youngster’s favour. Whether out wide in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 or fielded at the tip of a midfield diamond, his versatility ensures he will rarely be kept out of the Reds’ starting XI. With an influx of new signings potentially taking their time to settle, Rodgers will look to the teenager to step up as a key performer from the outset.

    • Further analysis of Sterling’s stats from Gameweek 13 bodes very well. Having cemented his role in the first XI, he produced 106 touches in the box in the final 26 fixtures – third amongst midfielders – and was fourth for shots on target (21) and goals (nine) over that period amongst midfielders. Whilst Yaya Toure, Steven Gerrard and Eden Hazard all scored more across that time frame, the trio relied heavily on penalties or set-pieces to boost their points potential – essentially, Sterling scored more goals from open play from Gameweek 13 onwards than any other midfielder in the league.

    • In spite of his tender years, Sterling has clearly developed over the last two seasons – particularly in front of goal. His shot accuracy of 26.5% in 2012/13 leapt to 48.9% last term, while he’s clearly far more clinical when face-to-face with the opposition keeper; after scoring just 5.9% of his efforts in his debut year, the Liverpool midfielder improved significantly and netted 20% of his efforts in 2013/14. With his successful dribble rate also on the up (from 40% to 59.2%) it’s clear that, as the years progress, he’s ever-improving his output under Rodgers’ guidance.

    • The afore-mentioned lack of game time in the opening few months has ensured Sterling remains out of the premium bracket for now. While a cost of 8.5 in FPL makes him the eleventh most expensive midfield option, that price tag could still provide us with excellent value – it’s possible that, with Suarez gone, Gerrard’s number of penalties will drop significantly and with just 0.5 difference between the pair, Sterling’s more advanced role could elevate him as the main man in the Merseysiders midfield. Bearing in mind all 13 of Gerrard’s goals in 2013/14 arrived from dead-ball situations (10 spot-kicks and three free-kicks), he’s clearly far more reliant on set-pieces.

Arnautovic sets the overlapping Pieters free down the left. He squares low for Diouf at the front post, who attempts to flick it into the net. He cannot pull it off and the ball bounces up in the air. Bojan rises to head it at goal but the keeper recovers to palm it away from goal. Ireland then arrives for but skies the rebound when it looked easier to hit the target

    Why isn't 3-5-2 vs 3-4-3 more of a debate?

Last year it was conclusive that 3-4-3 was better.

This year with so many midfield options will we see the return of the Power 5?

OK, so each week you've got 5.5mil striker on your bench...

Now, in a 343 you've only got a 4.5mil mid on the bench.

So, if money = points then a 352 is putting you £1mil behind.

I see where you are coming from but this ignores the potential benefit of the 5.5 striker coming in when your weakest midfielder has a bad fixture.

Defensive rotations are difficult enough* & with those at least you can find replacemets around the same price.

(*Example: If you had Sun v. New rotation last year you would have ended up with 20 less pts than if you'd just played Sun for the entire year)

So, if your striker or mid goes down to injury, rest, rotaton or suspension then you're truly out of luck.

On the whole, I'm pretty sure I can come up with a striker / mid combo + "£1mil" that can out do a heavy hitting mid & budget striker combo.

You may disagree but, that's my reasoning.

Like most of you, I'm looking to add some Stoke players in my squad early on in the season. In order to identify my targets, I looked at the Stoke City fan forums in great detail.

Here is the info that I gathered:

*If you have Cameron in your team, remove him straight away. He is an appealing option @4.5, but there is no point having him if he weren't to play. 99% of the Stoke fans don't have Cameron in their predicted first 11's for the opening fixture against Villa. Most don't even have him on the bench, maybe due to the fact that they expect him to move on or believe that there are better options

*Another misconception I'd like to correct is that Huth isn't nailed on just yet. The general consensus is that Hughes would have picked his starting 11 today vs Betis, and Huth is in the subs. Looks like a tussle between Wilson and Huth, till Huth regains full fitness. There is no doubt that Huth is the better player, but having not played a competitive game after November, Hughes might opt to take the safer route and ease him back into option

*Pieters faces some competition from Muniesa as well, but the majority expect him to start given that he did a solid job last season

*Arnautovic and Diouf look nailed on, with Odemwingie competing with Bojan for the other wingers spot.

If you wish to read the insight into the Stoke lineup yourself, here is the link

I agree with that and said as such a few weeks ago. Huth far from nailed on. Hughes likes Wilson so expect him to start. Bardsley, Huth, Shawcross and Pieters for me.

All fair enough. You should watch Sopranos man, best show out there imo, blows Prison Break away. Maybe you have different taste though, I thought Prison Break was terrible.

              What's Sopranos about?

Prison Break (season 1) reminded me of the film Shawshank Redemption, which I absolutely enjoy. That's why I really got hooked onto it

        Newcastle back line will be:

        Haidara-Colo-Willo-janmaat

Santon to replace Haidara once fit.

Taylor is our worst defender, but will be 3rd choice CB unfortunately. No chance of clean sheet when he plays though. Disaster-zone!

This 3-5-2 v 3-4-3 debate. Basically strikers have a better ppg but you have to have the right one at the right time. They also play less than mids. Mids are less explosive but play more. To sum up, strikers are high risk high reward. Mids are medium risk medium reward

A great move there that cuts Betis apart there. Bojan plays a one-two and then its fed out wide to Bardsley. His crosses is narrowly missed by Diouf but Pieters makes no mistakes after bombing forward to join in the attack

Memphis Depay: its now confirmed. signed from PSV by Spurs for 10 mln + Chadli.

very good prospect to play w/ ex-Eredivise players Vertonghen, Eriksen. Chadli who himself came from team FC Twent, gets sent back thru deal to dutch league.
those 2 goals in world cup and agility could have further upside.

Hazard safe option but Sanchez could pay off much more.

Heart says B--- Head says A.
Giroud might not be impressive but with all the fire-power behind him, even he will have to get some goals an be in the top 5 goal-scorers come the end of the season as he's the only one leading the ARS attack [...fine Sanchez will deputize but it's mainly the Frenchman]

I agree mate and think he is heavily under priced as he is likely to be a high point scorer again. Last season he was the 4th best scoring forward. I know he is not explosive but he steadily gets points.
