Two games kicked in the early hours of this morning over in the US. Chelsea got through Beckham’s unveiling and came away with a win, while Everton faltered badly in the Utah heat. Get the lineups, goals and all the other goodness here…
LA Galaxy 0 Chelsea 1
Chelsea survived the David Beckham circus and emerged with a 1-0 although they missed out on the brilliantly named “World Series of Soccer†trophy on goal difference. John Terry reassured us all of his fitness by playing the entire game, then reminded us of his qualities by hitting his second goal of Chelsea’s US pre-season tour. Jose switched from a 4-4-2 in the first half with Ben Haim at left-back, to a 4-3-3 in the second bringing on Joe Cole in his place. His first half team however, can be seen to be very close to his current thinking for his first-choice lineup given the injuries to Ashley Cole and Wayne Bridge, with the possible exceptions of Wright-Phillips and Kalou. Malouda, however, looks likely to cement his place on the left wing with another impressive showing here.
Chelsea Lineup: Cech (Cudicini 45), Ferreira (Mikel 45), Carvalho, Terry, Ben Haim (J Cole 45), Wright-Phillips (Shevchenko 45), Essien, Lampard (Sidwell 73), Malouda (Johnson 73) Drogba (Hutchinson 88), Kalou (Makelele 60)
Real Salt Lake 2 Everton 0
Everton slipped to a 2-0 defeat in Utah as their opponents hit both goals in a 60-second period. The defeat is fairly alarming given the lineup Everton put out which appears to be very close to the likely lineup for August 11, with the exception of Lescott who appeared later as sub and Cahill who is due to return from international duty with Australia. Jagielka was deployed at right-back with Neville pushed into midfield. Yobo returned from his back injury to take his place in central defence. Beattie and Johnson formed an ineffective partnership up front, something that will particularly worry David Moyes.
Everton Lineup: Howard, Jagielka, Yobo, Stubbs (Lescott 58), Valente (Hibbert 58), Osman, Carsley (Anichebe 58), Neville, Arteta (Anderson 58), Beattie, Johnson.
