Arsenal’s Alexander Hleb has been charged with violent conduct by the FA. Officials examined video evidence of the incident involving Hleb and Reading’s Graeme Murty and the match referee, Peter Walton, has apparently indicated that he would have dismissed Hleb had he seen the slapping administered to the Reading skipper.

Hleb now faces a 3-match ban that will rule him out of the rest of the season. Arsenal could appeal the decision but they would be fighting a losing battle, so it looks unlikely. This will leave a big hole in Wenger’s side for the remaining games.

Hleb is a key component of the Gunners lineup and his absence is certain to restrict their attacking output – maybe even against a Derby defence next. On the plus side, Wenger may now think twice about resting players, so Adebayor and Van Persie seem likely to remain in the side, as does Walcott. When it comes to a straight replacement, Denilson could now get an opportunity to fill a midfield berth.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
