Man City scraped through to the first round proper of the UEFA Cup but needed a last minute equaliser and penalty kicks to overcome their Danish opponents, FC Midtjylland.

Trailing 1-0 from the home leg, City found the goal to level up the tie in the final minute of normal time when an effort from Ched Evan’s deflected off a Danish defender to take things into extra time.

With no goals in the extra period it was left to Hart in goal to make a two crucial saves that allowed Corluka to fire the winning spot-kick. City will now go into the draw for the first round matches which begin with the first legs on September 18.

Mark Hughes was able to hand Jo his debut up front after the Brazilian returned from Olympic international duty in Beijing. He started in a 4-5-1 with Elano played up in support, although he was duly replaced by Sturridge as Hughes shifted to a 4-4-2 to chase the equaliser.

Micah Richards recovered from his head injury and concussion to take his place in a defence which also saw Richard Dunne restored. Ben Haim kept his place with Corluka moving into a midfield role to replace Kompany who was not registered for this round of the tournament.

Kompany is set to return to the side for Sunday’s trip to Sunderland where Jo and even new signing Shaun Wright-Phillips, could get their first starts of the season for City.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
