Chelsea and Liverpool came through last night’s Champions League ties with victories and without any reported injuries.
Here some brief notes on the events and lineups.
Scolari’s side comfortably eased past Bordeaux with a 4-0 win – Lampard weighing in with his third goal of the season along with strikes from Joe Cole, Malouda and Anelka. The game saw a return to action for Ballack who came off the bench on the hour mark as Chelsea named an unchanged side from the lineup that saw off City at the weekend. Drogba didn’t make the bench – he’s presumably being saved for an impact role the United game.
*Edit* Drogba was in fact suspended, so he is still very much in the frame for the United clash.
Rafa’s side came through against Marseille thanks to a stunning Gerrard 30-yard effort and a second goal from the skipper from the spot after Babel was fouled. A timely reminder of his goal potential at a time when we’re all considering the Ronaldo situation.
Rafa’s lineup saw Dossena restored at left back with Aurellio nursing a calf injury, while in midfield, Gerrard started for Benayoun and Lucas came in for Alonso. Babel replaced Riera further forward and Torres came in for Keane.
Significantly, Degen was fit and on the bench and so he will now provide a threat to Arbeloa at right back. Seemingly then, aside from Carragher, the entire defence is now under threat of rest and rotation. Not a pleasant situation going into a home game with Stoke which will doubtless see many fantasy managers looking at their defence.
