The transfer window may have closed, but today we still have news filtering through about new transfers. Oh, the wonder of free agents and their ability to sign after the deadline has closed. Jan Venegoor of Hesselink has today signed on for Hull City on a two year contract…

Jan (as I’ll call him, to avoid spelling errors) joins Hull after a 3 season spell north of the border with Celtic. He comes into Phil Browns side with a none too shabby track record when it comes to scoring goals. Wikipedia (sorry, quick news piece) has him as scoring 177 career goals in 279 appearances – huge pinches of salt can of course be taken now that Jan has moved to a team in the much tougher Premier League. As James McFadden and Alfonso Alves have previously shown, stirling form in Scotland and Holland won’t necessarily be replicated over here when it comes to putting away goals.

As a free signing though, one can’t doubt the deal that Hull could have on their hands. Alongside the signings of Jozy Altidore & Kamil Ghilas the team look to have added some real potential up front, now it is just the case of whether that potential can be realised – and which strikers will get consistent games. The aforementioned strikers came in the FPL Game at £5.0m so it wouldn’t be hard to imagine Jan being added for a price not too dissimilar, keep your eyes peeled on that one folks, another option in the bargain strikers could soon be added.

Hulls fixtures also lead one to believe that this could be the ideal time for Jan to bed in with this side; goals certainly look possible in the near future (sun, BIR, liv, WIG, ful, POR, bur) with all of these sides showing vulnerable signs at the back so far this season.

All being said, I’m going to keep a close eye on Jan (and all of the Hull strikers). Hopefully he’ll be getting on the end of Stephen Hunt crosses for the next season. One to watch out for.
