Favourites for the drop until recently, Portsmouth’s season has been turned on it’s head with the installation of Avram Grant as manager. The Israeli’s five league games in charge have seen the club double their Premiership points, and amongst many contributing reasons for the club’s upturn in on-field fortune is the goals of on-loan Frenchman, Frederic Piquionne.

Grant’s preferred 4-3-2-1 formation has worked a treat at Pompey, and with the only other realistic lone-striker competition Aruna Dindane off to the African Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast, Piquionne is Portsmouth’s first-choice striker for the foreseeable future.

Having taken part in four of the five games under Grant, Piquionne has got amongst the points every time; two goals, two assists, and 3 FPL Bonus Points see his appearances under the new boss, in terms of Fantasy points, read 5,4,6,8.

His upcoming games, West Ham (away) Arsenal (home) Fulham (away) Birmingham (home) West Ham (home) don’t look too bad, and given that those two goals were against Chelsea and Liverpool, it’s clear that form must be looked at over fixtures, a factor that seems to be par-for-the-course this season.

Piquionne has a real nose for goal, and is surely an absolute bargain at £4.8m in FPL. He’s beginning to show a consistency that many big-money strikers are struggling to find this campaign, and if Portsmouth continue to find form under Avram, the Frenchman must be given consideration.
