The Netherlands continued their impressive World Cup warm-up in style with a 6-1 thrashing of Hungary this afternoon, sending a clear message to the rest of the squads in the Finals and issuing a reminder to Fantasy Managers as to their attacking potential. The attacking riches available to them may well exclude Arjen Robben however. The Bayern Munich flyer sustained a late hamstring injury which appears to put him in doubt for the tournament.
Robben will not fly out with the rest of the squad tomorrow and Dutch coach Bert Van Marwijk doesn’t appear optimistic on the winger’s chances of re-joining his squad…
Having seen off fellow finalists Ghana 4-1 earlier this week, the Dutch crushed Hungary in Amsterdam and once again it was familiar names doing the damage. Goals from Van Persie, Sneijder, Van Bommel, Elia and two from Robben sealed an immensely impressive victory after the Hungarians had the audacity to take the lead on six minutes.
Bert van Marwijk’s team selection was interesting. The starting eleven looked very close to the side that will start the World Cup group stages, however Robben was left on the bench with Dirk Kuyt and Rafael Van der Vaart earning starts. Robben eventually appeared at half-time replacing Kuyt, although the Liverpool man had impressed to that point, laying on Van Persie’s equaliser. Robben predictably took his opportunity to shine, scoring a second-half brace. He then suffered an injury in the 88th minute and limped from the field.
The latest confirms that Robben will have scans on the injury. The initial signs aren’t good with Bert van Marwijk certainly not sounding optimistic in his post-match comments…
“I thought to myself, this can’t be true…He made an unnatural movement and injured his hamstring. He felt a sharp pain. That does not bode well. But I do not lose hope”
Van Marwijk confirmed that Robben will be left behind when the squad fly to South Africa on Sunday and the coach can now only hpoe that Robben can return to play some part in the tournament…
“You sometimes see that people with injuries like this are fit again in a few weeks…I’m hoping for that.”
Robben’s absence would come as a massive blow to the Dutch, although Van Marwijk does at least have options available having started with Robben on the bench today. Van der Vaart and Kuyt may now both start against Denmark in the group opener, while Eljero Elia is another option and potential Fantasy target in the mid-price bracket.
