Monday’s pre-season activity was low key with just Wigan putting in a shift of any note.

Roberto Martinez’ side ended their Austrian tour with a 4-1 win over Rudar with Jordi Gomes, James McCarthy, Jason Scotland and Mauro Boselli netting.

While Wigan’s preparation for the season ahead wouldn’t normally be of great interest, the fact that the Latics start with four home matches in their first five games certainly promotes them in our thinking. Defensively it’s likely that they will remain a major risk – home advantage won’t change that too much, but Wigan’s attacking players could certainly offer a route to cheap initial signings…

While Gomes netted his second pre-season goal last night and McCarthy reminded us of his budget potential, Boselli’s fourth goal of the summer is of particular interest. The goal came from the spot but it was of his own making, Boselli rounding the keeper only to see his effort handled on the line. He duly converted the resulting penalty.

Fantasy Managers will be wondering whether Martinez has handed us a low-to-mid price option up front in the same vein as Amr Zaki. The Egyptian was of course an outstanding early season Fantasy prospect in 2008 who eventually fizzled out but offered strong returns for a budget price in the first few months. Like Zaki, Boselli arrives in the Premier League with an strong scoring record and if pre-season is anything to go by, he has quickly found his feet within the Wigan squad. Whether he can continue to produce once up against Premier League defenders is another matter but those four home games certainly give him the platform to hit the ground running.

A full Scout Report on the prospects of Mauro Boselli is in the works and is coming your way.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
