There’s nothing like some scaremongering in the media to throw a cat amongst our Fantasy Football pigeons. Sky Sports have jumped on today’s Chelsea TV broadcast to boldly announce that both Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba could well be rested for the forthcoming trip to Wigan this weekend as both players continue to be troubled by injuries.
Lampard speaks out about his ankle problem in the Chelsea TV broadcast, relaying his quick recovery from the knock sustained whilst on international duty with England.
“I managed to go right over on my ankle and it blew up like a balloon… It took a lot of work, a lot of credit to the medical team who are always brilliant and worked round the clock on it. I wanted to take part in the first game and they got me there.”
Lampard goes on to offer some reassurance that, with a week’s rest, he’ll be fit and firing for the Wigan trip…
“It is good there are no midweek games so I have got a long week now. I can really rest it and get the swelling down.”
Sky’s report presents a much more cautious view on those comments and also points out that Didier Drogba is still recovering from his recent hernia operation and is suffering pain in the arm he fractured during his World Cup campaign…
“The arm is the one which is more tricky. I still feel pain….It is improving, but I still feel pain when I need to push a little bit. I still need to pay attention to it.”
Having seen Lampard make the teamsheet for the West Brom mauling, it seems unlikely that this early team news will have any impact on our thinking right now. We can only rely on Carlo Ancelotti to be at his most revealing when he gets in front of the press on Friday. The prospect of seeing both Drogba and Lampard hauled off once the points are in the bag at Wigan looks the worse case scenario, but we need to keep one ear on the noises from Stamford Bridge.
