While Chelsea and Didier Drogba surprised nobody with the Déjà vu scenario unfolded at Stamford Bridge, Blackpool was busily dismantling Roy Hodgson’s dream at Anfield; providing the cue for a chorus of “Dalglish” from the frustrated Kop. As for Man City – their efficiency was severely tested by a battling Newcastle but decisions fell kindly and the timely introduction of Adam Johnson’s twinkling feet saw them gather another three points.

Proceedings at Stamford Bridge certainly stuck to the script. Arsenal played pretty possession football with Samir Nasri and Jack Wilshere impressing again, but it was Chelsea’s power and penetration that eventually overwhelmed them. Michael Essien took control in midfield and even Ramires, much-maligned in the defeat at City last time out, asserted a strong influence in the middle of the park.

Chelsea have now kept five clean sheets this season and have yet to concede at Stamford Bridge. Away trips at Villa, Blackburn and Liverpool in the next four will test their defensive resolve, but it remains essential to cover Chelsea’s relentless march on the title with investment in all departments of your Fantasy squad. Alex’s thunderous free-kick was coming after finding the woodwork on two occasions previously; he remains a rotation risk however, as Carlo Ancelotti will soon have his pack boosted by the return of Jose Bosingwa as a right-back option. It’s difficult to look beyond Ashley Cole for Chelsea defensive coverage – even with his lofty price tag.

Newcastle’s trip to Man City saw a major surprise from Chris Hughton, with Andy Carroll (and Wayne Routledge) left on the bench for the first league game this season, making way for Shola Ameobi and Jonas Gutierrez respectively. Routledge’s time out of the starting XI only lasted a matter of minutes, however, thanks to Nigel de Jong’s leg-breaking challenge on Hatem Ben Arfa, who will now spend a substantial part of his season-long loan from Marseille on the sidelines. Routledge will surely come back into the starting lineup for Gameweek 8’s home clash with Wigan, whilst Carroll owners should be reasonably confident that he will also regain his starting role in that one.

Adam Johnson once again returned to the role of substitute, despite his midweek goal against Juventus in the Europa League. Coming off the bench on the 70th minute, Johnson didn’t take long to make an impact; within five minutes the winger had grabbed City’s winner (and was also awarded the 3 Bonus Points) in a 2-1 victory they made hard work of. Carlos Tevez, once again, scored for City, thanks to a dubiously awarded penalty in a game that saw Jerome Boateng make his first league start for Roberto Mancini’s side, as City moved up to second in the table.

For a side challenging for the top spots, City are still struggling to generate the weight goal opportunities you would expect. With three away games in the next four, owners of Tevez and Johnson will still have some concern that Mancini’s cautious, defend and “wait for the magic” tactics, currently look unlikely to produce large victory margins and big Fantasy returns. At the other end, City were breached against Newcastle, but remain one of the stronger defences in terms of opportunities granted to opponents. Boateng’s start puts him on the radar as a possible target, once we can be sure of his security at right-back. Gutierrez proved a handful on Sunday and Boateng will need to be more convincing if he is to cement a starting role.

Things go from bad to worse at Anfield. Liverpool’s defeat to Blackpool confines them to a bottom three position and, with the Kop baying for Dalglish, it’s clear that Roy Hodgson is in dire trouble. The fixture list looked so rosy for Liverpool a fortnight ago and yet in two home games against Sunderland and Blackpool, they have failed to win and have conceded 4 goals. With a lack of fluency and a lack of Fernando Torres, there’s little doubt that Liverpool have now been labelled a no-go area for Fantasy investment at both ends of the field.

Torres suffered a groin injury in yesterday’s defeat with Hodgson unsure over the severity of the injury and the likely length of absence. The international break may do Hodgson a favour and get the Spaniard back in contention but a trip to Goodison next certainly gives him no favours as far as fixtures are concerned. Everton will be buoyant after their win at Birmingham and will be looking forward to inflicting another blow to a wounded Liverpool in Gameweek 8.

Blackpool continue to surprise and, from 5 away games in their first 7 Premier League outings, Ian Holloway’s side have won 3 of them. Predictably, Charlie Adam has emerged as the “talent” within their squad and his two spot-kicks agianst Newcastle and at Anfield yesterday, have boosted his Fantasy returns to put him firmly on the radar as a bargain fifth midfielder. Maximum FPL Bonus Points arrived yesterday too and he, along with Everton’s Mikel Arteta, has now gathered this on three occasions. Blackpool will likely need to keep winning games for that to continue but the fixtures are on their side over the coming Gameweeks. Three home games in four now follow and Adam is sure to pick up a good deal of Fantasy interest as a result.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I bought Thomas with a hit (to squeeze in Tevez) - lol, you reckon it's a better choice? I luckily had my 2-pointer Barton coming in 🙂

Nah, I would have never got Thomas myself, though he may do fine (I just don't rate him as high as the other mids), but it appears Brunt has been doing amply fine since I chose the other one. But, this is what happens... we sell and we move on, he's [Dorrans] had his chance (for now).

SuperDunny advised me to get Thomas, who could I trust more than him?
With the cash I had (planning Gerrard->Fabs), I was limited to 5.1, could have gone Adam but didn't rotate well with Barton...
As you said, that just happens and he might do well after all (he was injured, wasn't he?)

Aye, this is just personal preference stuff, as I said he may do fine for your team but he's not someone I ever envisage in my team because I don't really like and/or rate him, especially compared to the other three (Brunt, Dorrans, Morrison). It would have just felt wrong for me to ever consider him.

This international break is going to kill me. I am sorted with my Gerrard -> Cesc transfer but players like Bale and Carroll dropping before my eyes is going to make it a long 2 weeks.

Really want to get in either VdV or Nani and Elmohamady but can't avoid a points hit to do so. Think I will sit tight and hope they have a quiet couple of weeks and Cesc comes back all guns blazing.

          Really?

Chelsea are just about the only team in the league consistently keeping clean sheets, and he's also a massive threat from set pieces, both direct and with his head.

Only worry for me is that Bosingwa returning may lead to some centre back rotation. Although Ivanovic was pretty poor yesterday, so perhaps Bos and Ivan will just slug it out for the RB role, leaving Terry and Alex (undoubtedly our best CB partnership) unchanged.

When the fat lump returns to our midfield, he'll probably start taking them again. Despite not scoring one for a season and a half...

As far as I'm concerned Lampard should never take free kicks for Chelsea. If it's close to goal, let Drogba take it, and if it's further out, let Alex take it. Simples.

I took him out too but there was no way I could get in the attacking players I wanted to do without doing so.

It was a choice between him and Joe Hart out this week and with hindsight I made the wrong choice but I have no regrets. I brought in Coleman (7 points) and Tevez (5 points) for Alex (14 points) and Chamakh (2 points) with no points hit so it could have been a lot worse.

    Quick question about RVP:

In the Injuries and Bans section, it has a return date of 23/10/10 pencilled in, but the only link is to a story on the 28/8 saying he'll be out for four weeks. So where does the 23/10 date come from?

Would be great to get him in for the West Ham and Newcastle games..

Jeez, VDV is easily going to go up tonight again.... I wonder if he'll break the record for most transfers in in a gameweek?

Could really do with him 'doing an RVP' and getting crocked for Holland. Hopefully De Jong munches him in a training session.

It's massively annoying. I want to get him in but it will be GW9 at the earliest unless I take an 8 point hit which I'm not prepared to do. Watching his price keep rising is going to hurt though.

Am firmly sticking with Gerrard -> Fabregas this week. Provided he is fit he will be a great differential for a few weeks at least. I think a lot of teams are loading their midfield with mid priced options (Nani, VdV, Dempsey etc) and it will make it difficult to get little Cesc in.

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping at least. Would be a massive blow if Fabs isn't available for the Birmingham game, because my team is designed to make getting Fabregas in very easy, and like you say there will be plenty of people struggling to get him back in.

And I need a good captain choice for this weekend.

I'm probably trying to convince myself, but I think there is more options and value in the mid-range set of midfielders now we're getting settled team lineups rather than having sacrificing to get Fabs in.

A Wildcard only cancels any point penalties from making too many transfers. So if you had 2 free transfers, this just means that the wildcard will start doing its magic from the 3rd transfer you make that GW.

I've decided i will go without Cesc until January when i wildcard (want to save my other one for some dgw's). I would love to have him in but i like the balance of my team and i'd have to cripple it to fit Cesc in - not worth it. Gonna wait til RVP is fit again, or see who else is firing in their midfield once they return to strength (Walcott? Nasri? etc.)

No, i'm not trying being a c***, but you're essentially arguing against a point i never made.

Of course it's possible to have a balanced team with Cesc in it, but i'm saying to get him in my team, that wouldn't be possible without making loads of transfers - crippling it.

You coming and posting your team as if it makes my point moot is missing the point i was trying to make. Which is the point i was trying to make above - not trying to be a dick at all.

Fair enough.. Although it's hard to comment on YOUR team when it's not linked! 😉

Fabregas is player that definitely want, but if you think that your team would be better off without him then fair enough... Although I'd imagine that there will be plenty of games (BIR, WHM, NEW) where you'll be praying that he does little, and he undoubtedly won't. The man is FPL gold.

Yeah you've got a lot of mid priced midfielders, Arteta, Nani, Malouda, VDV... All of which don't really deserve to be transferred out...

Malouda is another tough one, i'm probably gonna keep hold of him for the season given how advanced he plays and how much i've already made on him. But he is an obvious choice to free up some cash.

I have Ben Arfa, and obviously need to get rid of him. I bought him at 5.0m, he's currently at 5.1m, and only 2% owned. If everyone sells him, can his price only go back to 5.0m, or could it go lower?

I'd rather wait until after the internationals to prioritise my transfers, but if Arfa's price can drop more than 0.1m, I might consider doing it sooner...

it could go lower. Since his price has risen already, around 27000 (multiplied by 2.25 or so, for the injury flag) need to transfer him out for each price drop. I'd imagine he could definitely fall below 5.0

This is easily going to be my hardest week yet for transfers. A points hit is inevitable tbh, I still need to get rid of Harper but don't want to take more than a 4 point hit. This would mean not getting Fabs in if I made it my priority to change Harper. Would be something like this..

    Torres > Odemwingie/K Davies
    Bale > Fabs
    - 4 point hit, go with Foster in goal away at Arsenal

    Torres > Tevez
    Foster > Jussi/Krul
    - Would be a points hit but would captain Tevez & will have keeper sorted

    ?

Everbody buying Nani and considering buying Fabs for Birm:

    Nani - chances of being rested vs Wba(16/10)? Buraspor(19/10) & Stoke(24/10)?

Fab - will he get full 90min vs Birm(16/10) with Shaktar(19/10) and ManCity(24/10)?

Neither Arsenal or Utd are in a position to rest their most potent attacking players..

I'm much more concerned about Malouda getting rested for the Wolves game. Chelsea are in Moscow during the week, so that seems like a perfect game to rest players for..

Thks for the feedback Jamsie. I was actually posting with the hope you would respond!

You still not worried that Nani might be taken off vs WBA and Cesc might start on the bench vs Birm? Why did Berba not get 90min this week?

Yeah there's a chance that Nani won't play 90, but he should do something in the time he is on the pitch..

Arsenal are so poor without Fabregas, they simply can't afford to not start if he's 100% fit.

                  Hi BBA.

He wen't for an offensive raid at 4-0 or something and lost the ball and made a studs up challenge on the poor San Marino defender and was given a straight red.

It was the first time EVER someone was sent off against San Marino. Good job, Olof.

Now we have to call on Granqvist of Groningen to start in central defence, with Jonas Olsson of WBA taking a spot on the bench. Not sure how frightened Wesley Sneijder is.

Thats a ludicrous decision on his part. Didn't need to do it. Bet the Swedish media went to town on him! Or are they not as cutthroat as their English counterparts?

Still, I guess it gives one of the younger guard a chance to step up and stake a claim for the future games.

I wouldn't worry about Sneijder anyhow, hes useless 🙂

I am gambling on a budget forward-line of Tevez-Odemwinge-Elmander based on fixtures and uncertainty over Torres and Rooney's form and fitness. This is enabling me to go with a midfield of Fabregas-Arteta-Nani-Petrov-Adam and also to keep Cashley as my Chelsea cover.

I've done something similar. My forward line at the moment is Drogba, Odemwingie & Carroll. This has enabled me to have a midfield of Fab, Malouda, VDV, Nani & Adam whilst also having a defence of A. Cole, O'Shea, Konchesky, Mummy & P. Jones.

Might not be to everyone's taste but it's working for me, I'm top of 3 of the 4 leagues I'm in & am currently 5th in the Facebook league (although I don't think it's THE facebook league).

      Go for it mate...

Well, I can see your point....but I could only upgrade to one of Drogba and Fabregas (without wildcarding, of course) and as Cole is doing the business for me and Chelsea's fixtures are not spectacular I went for Fab and downgraded my forwards.

Good analysis as usual, though to marginally defend Boateng's shaky performance he was up against the mighty left side of Newcastle - Enrique and Gutierrez would give anyone a headache. 🙂

To be honest I would have captained Torres as well, makes me laugh all the numpties suddenly appearing AFTER the game saying "lol told you not to captain Torres yadda yadda".
Bit of bad luck, but the match has really made me stay away from Liverpool now, doubtless they'll have a big backlash due but predicting when is the problem.

Yeah, if he'd played 60 plus minutes and done sod all I would have been much more upset/angry, and imagined peoples diatribes to be of greater value than when he picks up a knock.

Of course, I guess we should expect Torres to get injured these days, but I'm certainly writing it off as bad luck rather than bad judgement on my part. One of those things that happens.

However, I agree, now those 2 fixtures are gone, until I see proof of otherwise I think Liverpool are to be untouched.

    How does this sound:
    Torres + Cleverley > Fabregas & Elmander
    To give:

    Jaas Foster
    A.Cole Konchesky Samba Gohouri Jara
    Malouda Davies Nani Bale Fabregas
    Drogba Carroll Elmander

Or do I just need to face up to needing Tevez and sacrifice Malouda?
I do quite fancy Elmanders fixtures tho and he's got his scoring boots on at the moment.

Controversial now, and no doubt will provoke a little scorn. But how about keeping your eye on the Torres or Gerrard situation, I really reckon they could go points mental in the near future.
If I was you Goose I'd downgrade Cole to Alex and see where that extra few bob could get me.
It's still your mid I dont like, Davies, Bale and Cleverley all together just don't look mustard. I still think mid will be the making / breaking of a season and yours needs more power.

    Interesting chalkboard from the weekend:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2010/oct/04/premier-league-chalkboard-analysis?CMP=twt_gu

Most notably, VDV only completed 23 passes all game, and not a single one within 25 yards of the Villa goal...

Like I've been saying for the last couple of days, I think people seem to think that VDV has been playing much better than he actually his. But you can't knock him when he's scoring goals, although I doubt teams will completely ignore him in the penalty area, like Villa (especially Petrov) did on plenty of occasions.

Speaking of chalkboards, Tiote's pass completion yesterday was 91%, so his three games are 100%, 95%, 91%. Mustard. 🙂
Reason I've gone for VdV instead of Bale is simple, set pieces and penalties. I'd actually really like to see the average position he is adopting too as I imagine it is pretty damned advanced. Plus he is a greedy git who shoots on site

That last line is what VDV is all about as a fantasy perspective for me. He just shoots at every opportunity.

Bit like the Man United youngsters, I hate it when they come on and I have other United players because they just shoot on sight instead of passing my players.
