While Chelsea and Didier Drogba surprised nobody with the Déjà vu scenario unfolded at Stamford Bridge, Blackpool was busily dismantling Roy Hodgson’s dream at Anfield; providing the cue for a chorus of “Dalglish” from the frustrated Kop. As for Man City – their efficiency was severely tested by a battling Newcastle but decisions fell kindly and the timely introduction of Adam Johnson’s twinkling feet saw them gather another three points.

Proceedings at Stamford Bridge certainly stuck to the script. Arsenal played pretty possession football with Samir Nasri and Jack Wilshere impressing again, but it was Chelsea’s power and penetration that eventually overwhelmed them. Michael Essien took control in midfield and even Ramires, much-maligned in the defeat at City last time out, asserted a strong influence in the middle of the park.

Chelsea have now kept five clean sheets this season and have yet to concede at Stamford Bridge. Away trips at Villa, Blackburn and Liverpool in the next four will test their defensive resolve, but it remains essential to cover Chelsea’s relentless march on the title with investment in all departments of your Fantasy squad. Alex’s thunderous free-kick was coming after finding the woodwork on two occasions previously; he remains a rotation risk however, as Carlo Ancelotti will soon have his pack boosted by the return of Jose Bosingwa as a right-back option. It’s difficult to look beyond Ashley Cole for Chelsea defensive coverage – even with his lofty price tag.

Newcastle’s trip to Man City saw a major surprise from Chris Hughton, with Andy Carroll (and Wayne Routledge) left on the bench for the first league game this season, making way for Shola Ameobi and Jonas Gutierrez respectively. Routledge’s time out of the starting XI only lasted a matter of minutes, however, thanks to Nigel de Jong’s leg-breaking challenge on Hatem Ben Arfa, who will now spend a substantial part of his season-long loan from Marseille on the sidelines. Routledge will surely come back into the starting lineup for Gameweek 8’s home clash with Wigan, whilst Carroll owners should be reasonably confident that he will also regain his starting role in that one.

Adam Johnson once again returned to the role of substitute, despite his midweek goal against Juventus in the Europa League. Coming off the bench on the 70th minute, Johnson didn’t take long to make an impact; within five minutes the winger had grabbed City’s winner (and was also awarded the 3 Bonus Points) in a 2-1 victory they made hard work of. Carlos Tevez, once again, scored for City, thanks to a dubiously awarded penalty in a game that saw Jerome Boateng make his first league start for Roberto Mancini’s side, as City moved up to second in the table.

For a side challenging for the top spots, City are still struggling to generate the weight goal opportunities you would expect. With three away games in the next four, owners of Tevez and Johnson will still have some concern that Mancini’s cautious, defend and “wait for the magic” tactics, currently look unlikely to produce large victory margins and big Fantasy returns. At the other end, City were breached against Newcastle, but remain one of the stronger defences in terms of opportunities granted to opponents. Boateng’s start puts him on the radar as a possible target, once we can be sure of his security at right-back. Gutierrez proved a handful on Sunday and Boateng will need to be more convincing if he is to cement a starting role.

Things go from bad to worse at Anfield. Liverpool’s defeat to Blackpool confines them to a bottom three position and, with the Kop baying for Dalglish, it’s clear that Roy Hodgson is in dire trouble. The fixture list looked so rosy for Liverpool a fortnight ago and yet in two home games against Sunderland and Blackpool, they have failed to win and have conceded 4 goals. With a lack of fluency and a lack of Fernando Torres, there’s little doubt that Liverpool have now been labelled a no-go area for Fantasy investment at both ends of the field.

Torres suffered a groin injury in yesterday’s defeat with Hodgson unsure over the severity of the injury and the likely length of absence. The international break may do Hodgson a favour and get the Spaniard back in contention but a trip to Goodison next certainly gives him no favours as far as fixtures are concerned. Everton will be buoyant after their win at Birmingham and will be looking forward to inflicting another blow to a wounded Liverpool in Gameweek 8.

Blackpool continue to surprise and, from 5 away games in their first 7 Premier League outings, Ian Holloway’s side have won 3 of them. Predictably, Charlie Adam has emerged as the “talent” within their squad and his two spot-kicks agianst Newcastle and at Anfield yesterday, have boosted his Fantasy returns to put him firmly on the radar as a bargain fifth midfielder. Maximum FPL Bonus Points arrived yesterday too and he, along with Everton’s Mikel Arteta, has now gathered this on three occasions. Blackpool will likely need to keep winning games for that to continue but the fixtures are on their side over the coming Gameweeks. Three home games in four now follow and Adam is sure to pick up a good deal of Fantasy interest as a result.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

              Hmm. I dont think enough people wildcard in this manner to account for such an increase. I understand that people on here may wildcard early to make some money/get risers before they rise. I think most people arent as obsessed as us and it is their actions that drive the market - people making money out of wildcarding are riding on their coattails, rather than the cause of the increases, id imagine...

                as I explained to someone the other day, there are a buttload of casual players on FPL, and they do transfers not based on chalkboards, heatmaps, attempts on goal, passes in opponents half or fixtures, they pick the top scoring defenders/midfielders and strikers in a given week, and if the Transfer list in Transfers on FPL shows Van Der Vaart up there for under 8.0, the casuals think BARGAIN! regardless of fixtures or broken legs or anything!

                  For sure. I used to be in that camp, so I understand the thinking. I'm avoiding points hits at all costs. Last week I did Arshavin->Gerrard for a 4 pt hit and captained Gerrard. Would have captained Drogba if I didnt get Gerrard, so twas a fail. Moreover, I cant do Bale->Vdv without a points hit. All in all, the points hit was a serious fail

      Its a bit of a way off, but there is a reasonable chance Fabregas will be back. If that's the case I really wouldn't fancy Birmingham's chances at Arsenal. Saying that it's pretty hard to pick a goalkeeper in the same price bracket that has a good chance of a cleansheet. Personally I'm playing Hahnemann against West Ham, but with the way Wolves are going I wouldn't be expectant of a clean sheet.

    * Konchesky replaced by Alex
    * Foley replaced by Elmohamady
    * Gerrard replaced by Van der Vaart
    * Bale replaced by Etherington
    * Chamakh replaced by Tevez

    Wildcard moves.. Worth it? Going to fit Fabregas in there but need to make up some cash in the meantime, these moves should cover it.. With a bit more tinkering of course.. Nani or VDV? Thoughts? cheers

    Sorry for the repost but for the participants that missed it last night:

    CIVIL WAR
    Good V Evil
    Toffs V Proles
    Members V Non-Members

    After another suprising gameweek where many of the ‘big guns’ offered scant returns both sides yet again yielded low scores. The dastardly barbarian hordes of the Non Members won last week making it two on the trot, so it was imperative for the Members to up there game. The hero for the Members side was Bhoys from Bruzil with an honourable 64, yet once again this was overshadowed by a spawny 73 from NoNayNeverNoMore for the Non Members. Well done to Wildrover on that impressive score.
    The cumulative scores for Gameweek 7 are as follows

    ……….drum roll……………

    MEMBERS 809 V 854 NON MEMBERS

    Disaster – the fortress of Members has been breached and the Non Members are busy looting, pillaging and erm you know the other one. This makes it 3-4 to the Non Members in gameweeks and brings the cumulative scores to:

    MEMBERS 6870 V 6853 NON MEMBERS

    A mere 17 points is all that stands between civilization and anarchy, we members must turn the tide before defeat becomes endemic.

    Anyhoo congratulations to the evil non-members and thanks all for playing.

        Its a league where 16 Members take on 16 Non Members. The teams were created on a first come first served basis and asides from the odd dropout and replacement it has remained balanced since week one. The cumulative scores of both sides are added together in the interests of slagging and banter.
        The first three gameweeks were all one by the Members, and we were becoming nicely complacent - the snidey non-members though have caught us right up as you can see above.

          I am also interested in that particular. On FT he ins't but on FISO he is. The problem is that he has risen once so maybe its a different algorithm and he will drop tonight ala Bale and Carroll.

          To bad TM is sleeping.

              Patience is a virtue
              Berbatov should be a good pick for the next week, and Arteta will always do well as he is a BP magnet. But are you sure you want to drop Malouda, yes he has a risk of being rested for the upcoming CL games but over the season the man is shaping up to replace Fat Frank as the Beast of FPL.

              I think Krul had a good game yesterday. Took down plenty of crosses etc before they materialized into something dangerous. To be honest I think Fabianski was good as well, apart from that early flap. None of the four goals they conceded were their faults.

              Krul is a young keeper - he was never going to be as solid as Harper but he has not made any ridiculous mistakes, he plays for Newcastle, we just played Man City away - he was always going to concede. Plus he is priced at 4m so what do you expect? You are not going to get Neville Southall for that!

                  Hope it's as a punitive measure - wasn't someone saying yesterday (maybe Applebonkers) that he had been warned before by the Dutch about reckless challenges?

                    He broke Holden's leg against USA and almost destroyed some Japanese guy last year. After both of those tackles (and probably more too) Van Marwijk talked to him about it, but now they had a new discussion and he was sent home to think about his behavior and all.

                      The man is a total idiot. I dont mind a tough tackle or a physical game but he flies in two footed regularly. Does my head in as well when you get people saying "oh it would be ballet if you had your way" and other such nonsense, career threatening tackles have no business in the sport.

            Ok, this is my first big dilemma of the season. Lost ground on most rivals in my mini-league due to Chelsea defenders but still leading by 11 points...currently:

            Foster - Robinson
            Kaboul - Konchsky - Jones - Faye - Williamson
            Malouda - Nani - Bale - Nolan - Yaya
            Drogba - Tevez - Carroll

            Now, I want to do Bale / Nolan > Fab / Albrighton
            by GW10

            but I would like to also get VdV in for Yaya as well, but that would mean doing another 4 transfers e.g.

            Robinson > Krul
            Kaboul > Jara
            Konchesky > Gouhouri
            Yaya > VdV

            meaning I take a total of 12 points in hits over the next 3 GW's.

            Is this worth it, to end up with a front 8 of:

            Fabregas / Malouda / Nani / VdV / Albrighton
            Drogba / Tevez / Carroll

            ???
            or do I just settle for TWO of Malouda / Fabregas / VdV, keeping a better defence - and, if so, which two?
