Our Watchlist player rankings have been updated today, reflecting the forthcoming fixtures, current form and recent team selections. You’ll find these tables in your right sidebar on the frontpage.

The eagle-eyed amongst you will notice that we’ve recently extended our season ticker to six fixtures and this has been reflected in the Watchlist – the next six opponents are now considered when putting these rankings together.

Joe Hart stays on the summit of the Goalkeeper rankings but only just. With three away fixtures in the next four and home games against Arsenal and United, he may need to rely on Save Points to fetch the returns. Newcastle’s Tim Krul offers a very viable and far cheaper alternative; with four home matches in the next six against Wigan, Sunderland, Blackburn and Fulham – the Newcastle stand-in looks to offer exceptional value going into November. Arsenal’s Lucasz Fabianski is a notable new entry, gate-crashing in fourth place in the rankings, the Pole may well be a short-term solution given that Manuel Almunia’s elbow is on the mend, but three “kind†home fixtures in the next four appears to offer strong value if you’re willing to trust a Gunners defence that’s likely to be without Thomas Vermaelen for the foreseeable.

John O’Shea benefits from the return of Rio Ferdinand and the solidity that this brings to Alex Ferguson’s rearguard – this has the Irishman climb to the top of our Defender rankings, surpassing Kolo Toure right now on fixtures with three home games in the next four Gameweeks. Everton’s Leighton Baines is the big climber – his fixtures improve slightly over the next six and he is already displaying form with two assists to his name so far. Newcastle’s Jose Enrique is a big climber just below the Everton left-back; more expensive than Mike Williamson and possibly more secure than the returning Danny Simpson, the Spaniard offers assist potential and a strong alternative to Krul in goal with four home matches in six. Notably climbers include Wigan’s Antolin Alcaraz and Sunderland’s Elmohamady who we feel will start delivery attacking points to supplement Sunderland’s defensive returns, despite a harsh run of fixtures to come.

Yet again the Midfield rankings remain pretty steady at the top – United’s Nani and Chelsea’s Florent Malouda holding on to the top two spots, with Fulham’s Clint Dempsey maintaining his position in third thanks to his goal at Upton Park and decent fixtures to come. Blackpool’s Charlie Adam is the big climber and even pips the “bandwagonesque†Rafael Van der Vaart of Spurs. With three home games in four, I feel that Adam offers potential stronger returns over that period as Van der Vaart embarks on away games at Fulham, United and Bolton.

Up front there is also little movement at the top. Dimitar Berbatov’s shock relegation to the bench doesn’t shake my confidence in him ahead of some strong home fixtures, while West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie remains solid in fourth with some decent opponents to come. Andy Carroll holds firm despite being benched at City – I have confidence that he will return to the starting lineup and exploit Newcastle’s kind run of opponents that follow. Bolton’s Johan Elmander and Arsenal’s Marouane Chamakh enjoy climbs with three attractive home games in four to come, despite the lack of form shown by Arsenal’s Moroccan striker.

As always there will be changes to the Watchlist as we near the next Gameweek deadline – Cesc Fabregas and Frank Lampard are almost certain to enter the rankings once we have confirmation of their expected returns. I’ll keep you posted on those and any other notable changes as and when they take place.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

My 2 cents is there is much more skill than luck. This game is about correct predictions and if some of us put as much effort in to gambling as we did FF we could probably make a nice bit of coin.
I'd say as a rough estimate the difference between finishing 10,000th and finishing 1st could boil down to luck but when you consider there's over 2 million participants that's fairly insignificant.

Fantasy football is 90 per cent luck and 10 per cent skill. But don't try it without that 10 per cent.

Yeah it's not 90%, I was just quoting Richie Benaud and replaced 'Captaincy' with 'Fantasy football'. Thought it was appropriate.

Mostly yep, the skill and judgement bit really comes with picking the right squad at the start, but then there is a fair amount of luck with that too - what if Drogba WAS injured for example?

Then you've had bad luck, but probably he will not be and over longer periods of time your good judgement will pay off.

A smart person could probably make a formula for how luck and skill % changes over time, but this discussion should not be continued unless we specify for what time periods we are talking about.

Just stating that there is X % skill and Y % luck is stating nothing at all.

How you manage your team, calculated risks (points hits), finding good cheap differential players play the biggest part I think.

It is very much like poker 60% skill 40% luck, you make the best desicions you can while the cards are in your hands but once you lay them down or it turns 11.30 on Saturday in FPL it's in the hands of luck, you just have to give yourself the best chance of getting lucky.

I agree HST, its more like 60/40 than 90/10.

The game is based on statistics and value for money.

For instance, Elmohamady is well worth 4.7 million as a defender because he will get clean sheets and extra points when he scores. Next season, when hes a 6 million midfielder, no one will have him. He will score at some point, so its about having him in when he does.

This season, everyone decent now has Nani, Drogba and Malouda as they ae guaranteed points over time.

You can be lucky/unlucky in the short term but over time the more skillful players will rise to the top.

+1 This skill/luck always makes me think about poker. No matter how well you are at calculating risks/returns, at reading people but as long as there are cards to be flopped luck plays a big part.

The skill is in picking the right players, the luck is in having them at the right time. I've had Essien, Petrov, Arteta, Bale and others this season but have had them when they've been scoring 2 points rather than 10. If I had to choose skill or luck, I'd choose luck every time. As I said earlier, all you can do is move the odds in your favour. You can predict Malouda will score 12 goals this season and be pretty accurate, but narrow it down to which matches he'll score those goals and someone who's never heard of him has as much chance as you of getting that right.

Good enough points, but it's not possible to choose luck over skill. We are all equally lucky and unlucky as soon as the sample we look at gets reasonably large.

This is getting more detailed than I intended, but we can't all be equally lucky or unlucky over a season. If the average luck factor of all 2 million players is 50%, then on the probability bell-shaped curve that means some will have 10% luck and others 90%. Still, these are all unquantifiable (and completely made up) numbers and ultimately pointless. As I said earlier, all you can do is shift the odds in your favour...if your captain hits the post 5 times in a match then there's nothing you could have done differently no matter how 'skilled' you are at fantasy football.

Like Napoleon said, I'd rather have a lucky general than a good one.

But that is the beauty of the game, that you can still have a good battle with a 'crap' FF manager who doesn't pay attention. Chess is just about skill, and Lord knows I'm rubbish at that.

              Good quote. 🙂
Like a bit of Napoleon in the afternoon
The main three things you need in my opinion are:
              Luck
              Knowledge
              Dedication
You can be a totally poxy git one week, but if you dont have enough knowledge to ensure your squad is good enough then your luck will inevitably run out. You also need the dedication to keep checking the players fitness, team selections etc to ensure that your good picks are given enough pitch time to be lucky.

              Napoleon was a bit of a **** though, wasn't he? 😉

I'm not even sure I agree that it is luck/bad luck when players hit the post. Luck to me is things that happen that players basically can't affect, like completely random refereeing decisions or a virus sidelining your star player just before kick off.

Still these things will even out, but perhaps it takes more than one season.

But you have to admit by selecting Penalty or set piece takers there are a serious amount of luck involved.

No guarantees a penalty will be awarded or even converted. Who will forget the Drogba/Lamps "argument" end of last year when a penalty was awarded.

It's very good, it's a show that can be "procedural" like your bog standard CSI or Bones or something, but still do it very well and not be shit. They invest time in the character and story properly even if not always fully serialized every week.

Quite like the new series Terriers too, that's from FX and I'm enjoying it.

I reckon the getting into a position such as the top 100,000 is 95% skill. If you check the fixtures and pick players in form etc etc you should get up there.

After it swings more in favour of luck. Maybe getting from 100,000 to 50,000 is 70% skill.

The numbers are a bit arbitrary but you know what I mean… getting to a certain position can be pretty much all skill but after that doing increasingly better requires increasingly more luck. Two players could both put in the same amount of ‘skill’ to get to 10,000th place but one of them could have 5 really good bits of fortune that gives them an extra 50 points… that’s probably push them quite a bit higher up the league.

        You make your own luck.

I think all you can do is keep trying to do the right things, keep making the right decisions. Unfortunately sometimes what appears to be the right decision is effected by unforseen variables - Tevez f*cked off to Argentina on a double GW, snow, captaining Defoe when they lost 1-0 at home to Wolves - the list is enless - we (me anyhoo) tend to remember when things go against our better judgement coz we all think we know the game sowell! In short, +1 😉

No point in arguing about the exact percentage. But taking into account how important it is to select the right captain I'd also agree that luck is more important. Sure there are no brainers and on occasion a player on your bench, whom you don't fancy as a captain, gets a huge score. Then again a sheepish guess would say that a broken and out of form Torres vs Blackpool is a no brainer, so a certain amount of skill is also involved.

Just an interesting note about captaincy. I played only CYKI last year and finished somewhere in the top 300 out of 22 000, 1st position was about 100 point ahead. I calculated my wrong and right captain choices vs the highest scoring player I had in my team the corresponding gameweek. Had I selected the right captain on 75% of gameweeks I'd still have won the game by a landslide.

It's an inexact science, but check http://www.fiso.co.uk/crackthecode and/or http://www.totalfpl.com. Once a player reacher 100%, he will (in theory) rise in price. Coleman doesn't appear in the 'rises' list on either site, so you *should* be safe.

Arsenal's short term fixtures are mouth watering - they're home to BIR, WHAM, NEWC in the next four weeks ... will definietly have Fab captain for those 3 weeks fitness permitting & also tempted to give Chamakh 4 more weeks rather than shipping him out this GW.

I could see them easily notching 10-15 goals in those three games.

Anyone seen that Hicks and Gillett tried to block the sale by changing the board members..

It seems the dispute is being taken to the high court.. and if they win, Liverpool then need to renegotiate repaying loans etc to RBS for around £240m.. and IF that doesn't happen then RBS could place liverpool in administration.. Which would mean points deduction right? Seems pretty unlikely to be honest but that would put Liverpool in a bit of hole...

Thanks, Cheggers. Another qiuck question for everyone here:

Who is the best defensive option at 5.5 m?

I'm thinking of going for Jagielka because i feel i need some class at the back of what is already a 'pound shop' defence of Jara/Foley/Dann/Konch.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks again

    Afternoon lads,

    My orignal plan was:

Gerrard → Nani then GW 10 Nani → Fabregas

Although with Fabs now fit he could prove to be an amazing differential and could quite easily outscore Nani anyway! Should I stick with plan A or just get Fabs in?

With Fabs getting injured so often, I'd be tempted to go with Nani for a while and use the extra cash elsewhere. Certainly until Fabs goes 2 games without being taken off.

Fabs has Birmingham at home then city away – 2 games that may not produce a huge amount of goals for arsenal. Nani has west brom at home then stoke away – 2 games which should see goals for united. I’d personally get in fabs from GW10 onwards

So I'm thinking it might be time to say ta very much for the massive score and see you later to Alex. Sure missing the villa game is no biggie but then we'll have question marks over if he'll play wolves and then we will probably have bosingwa raring to go which will likely see the two get rotated with ivan switching between rb and cb depending on which one gets the nod.

It's a new league, Akers wanted to change his team and it wouldn't let him back in the old one, so join this new one and remove yourself from the old one so I can dissolve it. Hopefully by the end of today we can get a couple more players in it too

I started as Newcastle against Akers's Spurs - wasn't pretty. Andy Carroll was like moving an oil tanker, Nolan had his feet in buckets of treacle and the less said about Steven Taylor the better.

tough to answer that b&b as you'll obviously only play barton/alcaraz/konch some weeks so whoever else is rotating with them would make or break the decision.

Hmmm. It depends how far down the Jamsie P road that your willing to go, I think he has a point about Malouda having a rotation risk and poor fixtures coming up - but I'm still keeping Malouda.
Arteta is one player I wish I had though, I reckon he is gonna start creaming in the points, VdV I also have, but he has some hard games coming up, whereas Barton has some kind fixtures.
Tough un BnB, tough un. I'd controversially say Arteta, Barton and Alcaraz, keeping the upgrade money for when Malouda gets through the tricky patch.

I think the issue of goalkeepers needs debating.

I went with the Foster/Hahnemann rotation strategy proposed at the beginning of the season but Hahnemann has performed terribly and I don't even think it's worth it for the home fixture rotation.

What better options are there? Is it worth replacing Hahnemann with someone like Gilks or Robinson?

That's why it's worth having an expensive keeper like hart or cech imo. Then you don't have to hope for cs from wolves to get points. I've gone with the rotating keepers atm but in the past i've always had a 4.0 benchie and a top 4 keeper. Each has their + & - I guess.

Biffy Clyro are pretty ace live. I saw them in Australia (live in Brisbane) on a tuesday night about 2-3 years ago. So yeah - probably only 100 or so people there...they still went as hard as they could, and played a good long set. So yeah - lot of time for them. Plus, I enjoy their homage to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in one of their music videos.

Defensive injury nightmare at the moment with 3 players out next GW. Good opportunity to bank some cash though so looking at cheap options. Already got Alcaraz due to good fixtures and now pondering Perch (good fix and low price), Elmo (OOPand lowish price) and/or Knight from Bolton or Collins from Stoke.

Where would you guys govto rebuild with an eye on saving cash?

      Couple more options for you:

Simpson from Newcastle is a favourite on here.
      Jara from West Brom.

Althought out of the ones you've suggested I'd go with Elmo probably.

That's what I keep coming back to. Dempsey has some nice fixtures coming up though and has scored 2 in the last 3.

The main problem is I have Gerrard and Dempsey already. So if I want Dempsey for the next few weeks Id have to get VDV for Gerrard this week and then later on swap Dempsey for adam and VDV to Fabs

Just realised I can keep Dempsey if I take a 4 point hit and go Konchesky ---> Coleman and Gerrard to Fabs.

Is Coleman likely to keep starting?

With Rafael and Anderson now back he looks like a major rotation worry to me

Anderson has no bearing on O'Shea but Rafael certainly does. He's a big risk, but Mark said something interesting yesterday that Fergie will want a solid, consistent back line now as it's something he hasn't had in at least a year now. If that's the case, O'Shea is a better defender at the moment.

As i said to Gargamel yesterday: WBA & blackpool beat Arsenal & liverpool away, so what makes you think they wont score at Westham?

WBA & Blackpool will not finish the league where they are now, promoted teams always start off well and tail off.

I don't expect a CS away to Arsenal but see no reason why there won't be a decent points return in the other matches!

    Alright lads,

Thinking of playing the wildcard as I'm in freefall and doing:

    Shawcross ⇒ Simpson
    Konchesky ⇒ Jara
    Gerrard ⇒ Fabregas
    A Johnson ⇒ Nani
    Carroll ⇒ Odemwingie

    Leaving me with:

    Foster, Jaask
Alcaraz, Simpson, Jara, P Jones, Elmo
    Fabregas, Nani, Malouda, Ferguson, Bale
    Drogba, Tevez, Odemwingie

Worth it or hold onto the wildcard? Cheers!

Get rid of Torres, money could be spent better elsewhere, Torres doesn't want to be at pool and will spend more time on the treatment table than the pitch this season....in my opinion!

Sounds good to me, Fabs will be a useful differential as a lot of people will have got rid due to his injury. Hopefully he'll be back next weekend. Odewinge looks good, Carroll has decent fixtures so worth considering. But maybe not work taking a 8 point hit this week?
