Tim Cahill survives Socceroo outing. Samir Nasri catches the eye once again. Adam Johnson bemoans his bench-warming role at City and Mick McCarthy backs his defensive tactics. Here’s some scribbles from the last 24-hours…

Tim Cahill started for the Socceroos in their 1-0 win over Paraguay in Sydney. The Everton man, an injury doubt before the game, played out 75 minutes and will now return to Goodison and prepare for the derby with Liverpool on Sunday. Barring any reaction to last night’s run-out, Cahill will surely start in an advanced role in support of Yakubu. He and Mikel Arteta will look to start to gather increased Fantasy interest from this point on as Everton begin to show a semblance of form that coincides with a run of opponents that could well bring more positive results and goals for the Australian. Everton have four matches at Goodison in the next six, starting with Liverpool on Sunday.

Samir Nasri sparkled in France’s 2-0 success over Romania in Paris; the Gunners playmaker played out 74 minutes of the game but ironically, the home side’s goals arrived late on when he was off the pitch. Regardless, Nasri’s form and confidence continues to look strong as he and Arsenal embark on a kinder run of Premier League opponents. The expected return of Cesc Fabregas undoubtedly casts a cloud over Nasri’s Fantasy potential and having started the Frenchman “in the hole” behind Chamakh in previous outings, it will be interesting to see how Wenger harnesses Nasri’s current form with the return of his skipper.

Niko Kranjcar offered a reminder of his abilities to Spurs boss Harry Redknapp with a brace of goals that won the game for Croatia in Israel. Kranjcar got his first from the spot and then converted a Luka Modric assist to earn a second and decisive goal for the Croats. Both Kranjcar and Modric completed the 90 minutes, along with Spurs team-mate Vedran Coluka. All three will go on to face Norway in a friendly on Tuesday – it will be interesting to see their level of involvement in that one given that Spurs travel to Fulham on Saturday, ahead of the Champions League trip to the San Siro on Wednesday week.

Adam Johnson has spoken out about his situation at City, stressing his disappointment at being dropped to the bench for recent matches.

“I was very disappointed to lose my place after I was man of the match against Blackburn and I haven’t started a Premier League game since. That is hard for me, but we have a great squad here and the manager makes the decisions – you just have to deal with them.”

Significantly Johnson then goes on to acknowledge that City’s fans were calling for his arrival prior to his winning strike from the bench against Newcastle last time out…

“Coming on and scoring against Newcastle was magnificent…The fans were singing my name to come on sooner, which is nice.”

Pointing out the City fans’ own frustration with Mancini is probably not a wise move but, having scored such a stunning goal last weekend, it is hard to see Johnson remaining on the bench when City travel to Blackpool in Gameweek 8. Johnson will, of course, have the chance to reiterate his form against Montenegro on Tuesday.

Mick McCarthy appears to be getting rather defensive (ironically) about his current formation and tactics at Wolves. McCarthy has reacted to fan frustration concerning the role of Steven Fletcher who appears to be employed as right-winger since returning to the starting lineup. McCarthy stresses that his side are playing a fluid 4-3-3 formation with Kevin Doyle, Matt Jarvis and Fletcher as the attacking trio. The Wolves boss is obviously struggling to convince the Molineux faithful and the stats hardly back up this 4-3-3 theory – Wolves have had the fewest goal attempts in the entire Premier League and have managed just 17 shots on target. Despite the emphasis on defence, they are the only side not to have kept a clean sheet. Wolves are struggling badly and Karl Henry’s suspension isn’t going to help their cause.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Foster, Hahnemann
    Salcido, Konchesky, Shawcross, Jara, Enrique
    Etherington, Malouda, Bale, Nani, Barton
    Drogba, Chamakh, Torres

    How does -

    Bale -> Fabregas
    Torres -> Odemwingie/Piquenineue
    Shawcross -> Elmo

Sound? Would be a 4 point hit.

The week after I’d probably do Ethers -> N’Zog and then Chamakh -> Tevez

    Good ideas?

Cheers. I might even hold off on Fabregas for 2 weeks depending on how Rooney gets on in the England match.

Rooney could be 11.3 million at the deadline - an incredibly low value.

I am thinking about just doing Shawcross -> Elmo even if its a 4 pointer as its worth it in almost every way.

I'm not averse to taking a 4 point hit for a defender... If its one I plan to keep for the long haul.

I cannot see myself taking Elmo out so in my view its worth it.

Plus I'd play him regardless of fixture

It's a thin line between arrogance and confidence.
They are usually separated by talent.

        Johnson has talent.

Hi Garg, I didn't say anything about Ballack 😉
Though since you ask, definitely in the 'had' category nowadays.

Jams - Johnson has talent. Every time he plays he does something. He's no world beater yet, but the potential is exciting. Plus to be a pro footballer, I think arrogance/confidence is a prerequisite!

Right my bad then, just thought you implied that as your answer above was to AP's post and not jamsiep's.

I personally think there is a huge difference between confidence and arrogance and while I don't know anything about A Johnson's attitude I dislike arrogant players unless show it with some self distance. Then it's fun.

The nature of football today though ain't it. What's best for a players career isn't always what is best for his wallet (at least in the short term!) so they chase the money. Who's to say they are wrong, must be tough to turn down that kinda wedge!

I don't get your beef here. So he's 'arrogant'? So what? If he consistently steps on the pitch and backs it up, then I think think he's every right to talk himself up.

So footballing ability is down to how many goals you score from midfield... er ok Mr Boyd.

You don't like him, fair enough, but to continue to throw mud when non of your points have any basis is a little silly.

I know you are a teenager so may consider 23 a long way off (and relatively old) but Adam Johnson is still a young Premiership football. Just because a player isn't a world beater by the time he is 18/19 doesn't mean he won't be in the future does it? Johnson still has a good few years yet before he'll be anywhere near his best.

I reckon Routledge would be a much better player if it wasn't for:

                    A) Injury on his Spurs debut
                    B) Aaron Lennon

Having both signed in the summer, Routledge was first pick and twisted something. Lennon duly came in and tore the place up for a couple of seasons. Routledge was subsequently loaned to whoever would have him and never looked up to it.
He's turning it around at Newcastle, but without those years in the wilderness, who knows.

when you start throwing more than a tenner on a bet your starting to get to the stage where youre asking for problems i think. thats my take on it.. dont do it often but when i have the alarm bells start ringing. £20 leads to £30 leads to £40 etc. you start losing perspective.

Exactly, I just generally have a tenner as my upper limit and any wins over €30 I stick half back onto the credit card. Sensible enough, I just do it for the interest more than owt.

I have another similar one for today, around 3/1 4/1 ish - wins for:
Brazil, Germany, Moldova, Switzerland, Turkey, Armenia.

And an ongoing one which just needs France, England and Portugal U19's to come in. That wins €50 (4 results already came my way)

Hi, grateful with any thoughts to solve my conundrum…

    Team is:
    Krul (Foster)
    Salcido, Elmo, Toure (Faye, Jara)
    Nani, Ethers, Malouda, VdV (Barton)
    Drogba(c), Tevez, Carroll.

How do I fit in Fabs weeks 10 (4.1m in bank)??

Also any other thoughts would be useful!

Hello everyone, if anyone is in the advise giving mood I would appreciate any input, I'm thinking of getting harper out this week and replacing with Jaaskelainen. Then I'm not sure if I should take a hit and get Fabs in for Gerrard, or do something about Alex, I want to downgrade anyway so I can try and upgrade Carroll after his favorable fixtures, any thoughts?

Harper to Jaask is a good move IMO... I still think that Foster/Jaask is the best keeper combo for the season.

Gerrard > Fabregas is a no brainer, even for a 4 point hit.

Your defence is easily good enough to bench Alex for this week, which hopefully will be the only one he misses.

worth downgrading chamakh to a 4.2 striker to bring Fabs in?

    Bale > Fabregas
    Chamakh > Ameobi

and will need to take a 4 point hit on downgrading evans to afford this so
    Evans > 4.3m Defender....

Leaving me with mid and strikers of

One of the stand out players over the past decade in my opinion. Brilliant as a leader, header of the ball, goal scorer and physically. Also a good passer and with a sound tactical sense.

No idea why so many on here seem to rate him lowly.

He was great until he sold his soul to the devil and played for Chelsea. But at least they rewarded him with a new contract in the end... oh hang on.

Chelsea is where over-rated players go to die.

How they turned Shevchenko into a £30million pub player, I'll never know...

Took a 4pt hit get to get VDV and enough money for Fabs and was going to get him next gw as i wasn't sure if he would play both Birmingham and Champ League games.

But am i making a mistake? Should i get him in over Nasri?

8pts is a lot to give up in H2Hs.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I appreciate his value, just concerned that 8pts is a lot to lose bringing in Fabs,VDV & Odemw.. for Fabs,Bale & Berbatov.

I'd say so, yeah. You're going to have to sell Harper at one point, and the armband on Cesc should cover the 4 points.

Yeah, y'know, this stupid thing called life turned up and got in the way (that coinciding with both Arsenal and my FPL team being crap was nothing more than coincidence).

I actually thought we did better than I expected. Considering we were without our three best players, had Fabianski in goal and Squillaci as our captain, it was quite a decent performance. The difference between the two teams was that Chelsea had their match-winners on the pitch, while ours were on the treatment table.

Against any other team, we'd have got a result, but Chelsea, and more to the point Drogba, are just ridiculously clinical.

Fair assessment. Even though you had a lot of possession, I never really thought that you were going to score (although Koscielny's miss in the first minute was shocking, and surprisingly has barely been mentioned).

I was at the game, and Wilshere and Nasri were particularly impressive. Wilshere bossed the midfield for large parts of the first half, and Nasri has ridiculous feet. The centre backs were pretty poor, and Arshavin did his best to cock up every decent move you had going...

That's been a running theme in Arsenal - Chelsea games; Arsenal pass it around for half an hour, Chelsea score, Arsenal pass it around for another half hour, Chelsea score.

Chamakh let himself, and the team, down last Sunday, I thought his performance was by far the most disappointing. I didn't think Koscielny was too bad, sitter aside, but Squillaci had a 'mare.

Big up to Fabianski though, he's now played two consecutive games without being at fault for any goals. Even during his worst spell, I always said he's a quality shot-stopper who just seriously lacks confidence. I thought he'd need to go elsewhere to get it, but maybe a decent run of form will get the best out of him.

It was interesting to see how Chelsea actively didn't seek to press Arsenal 30+ yards away from goal, in order to maintain a solid defensive shape when Arsenal approached the box...

The were plenty of people in the crows hurling obscenities at the likes of Malouda for not closing Arsenal down, but it was undoubtedly a ploy from Carlo A) to conserve energy and B) to maintain shape..

Every time we countered I thought that we had a chance of scoring, and aside from a couple of headers from Chamakh - which weren't even close - you guys didn't really threaten after the first minute.

Are you surprised with a midfield of Mikel, Ramires and Essien for creativity?

Like I said in the week, its like an upmarket version of Stoke.

Are you surprised that Chelsea sat back and decided to grind a result at home?

You'd never see United do that at OT.
