Tim Cahill survives Socceroo outing. Samir Nasri catches the eye once again. Adam Johnson bemoans his bench-warming role at City and Mick McCarthy backs his defensive tactics. Here’s some scribbles from the last 24-hours…

Tim Cahill started for the Socceroos in their 1-0 win over Paraguay in Sydney. The Everton man, an injury doubt before the game, played out 75 minutes and will now return to Goodison and prepare for the derby with Liverpool on Sunday. Barring any reaction to last night’s run-out, Cahill will surely start in an advanced role in support of Yakubu. He and Mikel Arteta will look to start to gather increased Fantasy interest from this point on as Everton begin to show a semblance of form that coincides with a run of opponents that could well bring more positive results and goals for the Australian. Everton have four matches at Goodison in the next six, starting with Liverpool on Sunday.

Samir Nasri sparkled in France’s 2-0 success over Romania in Paris; the Gunners playmaker played out 74 minutes of the game but ironically, the home side’s goals arrived late on when he was off the pitch. Regardless, Nasri’s form and confidence continues to look strong as he and Arsenal embark on a kinder run of Premier League opponents. The expected return of Cesc Fabregas undoubtedly casts a cloud over Nasri’s Fantasy potential and having started the Frenchman “in the hole” behind Chamakh in previous outings, it will be interesting to see how Wenger harnesses Nasri’s current form with the return of his skipper.

Niko Kranjcar offered a reminder of his abilities to Spurs boss Harry Redknapp with a brace of goals that won the game for Croatia in Israel. Kranjcar got his first from the spot and then converted a Luka Modric assist to earn a second and decisive goal for the Croats. Both Kranjcar and Modric completed the 90 minutes, along with Spurs team-mate Vedran Coluka. All three will go on to face Norway in a friendly on Tuesday – it will be interesting to see their level of involvement in that one given that Spurs travel to Fulham on Saturday, ahead of the Champions League trip to the San Siro on Wednesday week.

Adam Johnson has spoken out about his situation at City, stressing his disappointment at being dropped to the bench for recent matches.

“I was very disappointed to lose my place after I was man of the match against Blackburn and I haven’t started a Premier League game since. That is hard for me, but we have a great squad here and the manager makes the decisions – you just have to deal with them.”

Significantly Johnson then goes on to acknowledge that City’s fans were calling for his arrival prior to his winning strike from the bench against Newcastle last time out…

“Coming on and scoring against Newcastle was magnificent…The fans were singing my name to come on sooner, which is nice.”

Pointing out the City fans’ own frustration with Mancini is probably not a wise move but, having scored such a stunning goal last weekend, it is hard to see Johnson remaining on the bench when City travel to Blackpool in Gameweek 8. Johnson will, of course, have the chance to reiterate his form against Montenegro on Tuesday.

Mick McCarthy appears to be getting rather defensive (ironically) about his current formation and tactics at Wolves. McCarthy has reacted to fan frustration concerning the role of Steven Fletcher who appears to be employed as right-winger since returning to the starting lineup. McCarthy stresses that his side are playing a fluid 4-3-3 formation with Kevin Doyle, Matt Jarvis and Fletcher as the attacking trio. The Wolves boss is obviously struggling to convince the Molineux faithful and the stats hardly back up this 4-3-3 theory – Wolves have had the fewest goal attempts in the entire Premier League and have managed just 17 shots on target. Despite the emphasis on defence, they are the only side not to have kept a clean sheet. Wolves are struggling badly and Karl Henry’s suspension isn’t going to help their cause.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

am in a bit of a controversy-spreading mood today.

ballack and shevchenko used to be 2 of my favourite players back in 2005-6. i really admired them. then they went to chelsea and sucked on the bench. now they play wherever they play and nobody cares about them except jamsiep.

shevchenko could have been a true legend at milan playing til he was 40 with all the other milan 40-year-olds scoring shed loads of goals a season.

IMO chelsea destroy players like this. another example is deco 🙁
i think that the world wud be a much better place if chelsea get relegated to non-league, all their players get sold and abramovich's money gets shared between sir alex's piggy bank and sir alex's bank account.

    enjoy

Chelsea didn't destroy Deco. He'd been ineffective for over a season at Barca, and that's probably the reason why they were so willingly to get rid of him, especially to a club who are supposedly their rivals.

And if you think that Chelsea ruined Ballack, then I can't be bothered to engage in a conversation with you. Nice try though.

To be honest I had more of a problem with newcastle in their heyday buying moderately decent players (like patrick kluivert and michael owen) and turning them into stink...

bullcrap meester. Kluivert had already peaked by the time he hit his late twenties and Michael Owen was beset by injuries, removing his best asset which was his pace. Newcastle in no way ruined either of those two.

Yeah that goal wasn't quite so great... Nor was Shearer's deliberate attempt to injure Bridge when we'd already made 3 subs.. That's the real Alan Shearer at work, scum.

Oh lets not do the Shearer thing, its dull! He is a player you, or Man U would have killed for, and if you had him you'll be defending him for being a "winner" doing "what he had to do" or something. He was awesome, strong and yes had a nasty side, but no one would deny that. Poor pundit, that is the most annoying bit!

I'm pretty sure I would never praise a Chelsea player for deliberately injuring another player. Unless that player definitely deserved it, which poor old Wayne Bridge certainly didn't.

What Suarez did in the World Cup is perfectly fine by me, but Shearer deliberately injuring Bridge certainly isn't.

And yeah, terrible pundit! Probably the worst.

I have to be honest I dont remember, genuinely dont! And if he was out of line, fine, game was more physical then etc, but if he did as you say, he shouldnt have, I hate that. In the same vein we havent had many who dive at Newctasle but I hate it when they have, Solano was known to do so and it annoyed me, Im not uneven Id like to think. But most criticisms of Shearer are angry because he was hard to play against.
Great player but yes, alas, crap pundit. Not knowing Ben Arfa was a shocker!

to be fair, if you buy players at 29-30, take them into a different, and in this case more physical league, they're more likely to go downhill.

As an Arsenal fan, I've seen many of our best players move on at around that age and never recover the from they showed for us.

And I'm not sure why Sir Alex Ferguson should get that money, he did no better with Juan Seba Veron.

Well yes at the time of writing given that Ireland had just won (kind of) at Stade de France and Beaten Algeria 3 -0 with a half a team then yes.

Id still back Ireland last June when Russia were coming off losing to Slovenia and Ireland with a fit Duff, a non over the hill keane , and Hunt to beat them.

Agree with Fibbert. Ballack was regarded as maybe the best midfielder in the world. He quickly ceased to be after moving to
Chelsea, as well as Sheva. Slow downward curve since than for Ballsy, with the occasional upward jolt. The last bit here is what make Chelsea fans claim he was still as good in their team. That, and pride of course.

As for the money bit, Fibbert stops being serious. But new regulations are being discussed, disallowing the economic doping of teams like Chelsea and City. New regs will have a spending cap regulated by a teams regular turnover.

Everton did extremely well.. Lescott is barely worth 5 million, whereas Jagielka is the one who could conceivably be worth over 20 mill...

Amazing that everyone seemed to think that it was Lescott that was the better CB in that partnership. It's "Joleon Lescott syndrome' at it's best...

'Joleon Lescott syndrome' being when goal scoring defenders are believed to be better defenders than they actually are, due to the amount of goals they score. See Ryan Shawcross, Gary Cahill and, to a lesser extent, Thomas Vermalaen.

Agreed but given the fixtures after Wolves its unlikely they will put a good few past Blackburn & Liverpool away.

If I lose him id be able to get Arteta, Alex/ Kolarov, Jagielka who combined should match him.

But id love to keep him & improve my defence which seems hard at present,

Ive considered it but Tevez will score all season long cosistently.

It all depends on if I want to take a punt on Arteta.

Malouda has been involved in 6 of Chelsea's 27 goals, Tevez has been involved in 7 of Man City's 9...

So unless you think that Chelsea are going to continue scoring as many goals throughout the season, making it 147 goals in total, then I wouldn't be quite so sure about that.

Ultimately is a midfielder who costs over 10 mill, and doesn't take any set pieces other than the odd corner.

This is one thing i'm happy as larry for you to spread. The more people who don't have Malouda the better as far as i'm concerned.

Ultimately he is a midfielder playing up front, and just happens to be the highest scoring midfielder in the game so far. His telepathic understanding with the drog helps too.

Malouda has been involved in 7 of Chelsea's 17 goals he's been on the pitch for. He's not a midfielder, he's a forward, at least when Chelsea are with the ball. The fact of him being a midfielder in FPL surely adds to his appeal.

As for Tevez's role to City, and by the same token as you don't expect Chelsea to score 147 goals this season, do you really see Tevez being involved in that proportion of City's goals? That would be something like 35 goals and 20 assists in the season. Then there's the apparent Tevez tiredness and his rift with Mancini.

To add to that, Chelsea's best fixtures for the next few weeks come at times when rotation is extremely likely. We have three home games in the next eight:

Wolves - after a trip to Moscow in the week.
Fulham and Sunderland - which are 4 days apart, and come at the end of a time when we'll have played 5 games in 14 days. 30th, 3rd, 7th, 10th, 14th.

i thought about ditching him for vdv or arteta so i can booster my defence. Hardly anyone else in my mini league has him though so think ill keep him for now, would miss the odd 15 pointer otherwise and that would do my sweede...

Just noticed that Fabregas's yellow [i] has been removed. Reassuring, even though the yellow [i]'s are generally hit and miss with accuracy (see D.Drogba GW1), reckon I'll give him the handbag rather than Nani.

I think it's got to be Fabregas over Nani for the handbag.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking too.. Perhaps not the part about Bale, but teams will certainly watch VDV a lot more than Villa did. Petrov in particularly was guilty of allowing VDV to waltz into the box completely untracked for both goals, and a couple of other times.

This internation break thingy would really drive you up the wall!!

I can cope when the season ends for good in May because there's other things like The World Cup (sometimes), Wimbledon (dives for cover) etc.

But waiting two weeks in a game to take your next turn is just nuts...

Just had a look at his team... Not bad at all, certainly better than the ranking indicates.. Although he doesn't have an easy way of getting Fabregas in. If When he tears it up against the Brum you should be fine..

My game with Waldaz will probably come down to who's defence is the least shit.. I reckon we'll both take point hits this week, and hopefully Nani can comfortably outscore Malouda.

I actually just beat some punter twice on the run in Real V Barca matches with some epic goals, went back onto my career mode and Wigan are tonking me ahh the ups and downs.

6-6, it was the most fun game I've played so far - brilliant contest, if only indicative of the fact I don't have a clue how to defend. I have indeed learned how to score though. On occasion.

That SA game was brilliant too, the pitch seemed massive and even though they were 2* teams the players were really fast. I only needed 10 men.

Learn to defend and I'll be semi-competent.

With defending i've found it best to let the computer do as much as possible! Whenever i take control of the last man i usually cock it up...

I just always get flustered and turn the wrong way at the wrong time leaving loads of space for me to be carved open, or if it's a long foot race I never win it even without the ball. I'm quite abysmal, it's tragic.

Yeah those SA lads were like lightening! Good game that. I think it speaks volumes for my style of football that my main goalscorer is Pepe the centreback. Pulis has nowt on me 😉

Andy try and turn the auto switching in your controller settings to the lowest but one.

The use L1 to select the deepest midfielders and do as much defending with them as possible and let the AI of the computer hold your back 4.

Call in a defender with the secondary press when you need them.

Basically do as much defending as possible with your midfielders and you will concede less.

                  +1

That is the key i reckon, at least until you master the art of defending!

Does the new FIFA keep your skill points (or whatever they are called) from the old one or do you start from scratch? I'm tempted to get another PS3 soon, only just out of mourning after my YLOD experience.

Anyone got a good tip for where to buy one? I found this which seems decent but it's seemingly always out of stock...

I'm not keen on that. I really don't want the worry of it fooking up again so a guarantee is a must.

Sounds like a good deal, there are loads of offers for that new 'Move' thing as well which looks Wii ish. As far as I can see it wont let you keep your skill points (not that I had many) and it seems like all that effort working on the Ultimate Team thing was bollox too as it doesn't feature here.

Yeah looks like a decent deal to me. Will have a shop round and see what the warranties are like.
