The international break can get to the best Fantasy Managers. A fortnight of deliberation can lead to frustration and self-doubt; resistance to the “jerky knee” can quickly waver. We can only hope that you’ve steered clear of the delirium to this point and to help you through, we’re now looking to restore some normality to these pages, courtesy of our regular “frisking” of the upcoming Premier League fixtures…

The Highs…

Arsenal
A three home game in four setup is the key to the teams blinking wildly on the radar this week, and Arsene Wenger’s Gunners are the prime candidates when it comes to fulfilling that particular criteria. The three Emirates encounters look pretty tasty too. With Cesc Fabregas suggesting he’s available for a return and Theo Walcott also on the mend, the encounters at home to Birmingham, West Ham and Newcastle should bring goals and tempt investment in Wenger’s attacking cast.

Man United
Despite a disappointing 0-0 draw away at Sunderland, we stand firm over United’s fixtures being strong enough to consider them one of the best investments over the next month or so. Their three home matches in the next four start with the visit of Roberto Di Matteo’s West Brom side who, for all their merits, will surely grant United room to breathe on the Old Trafford turf and tempt investors in the attacking options on show. Right now those options are limited to Nani and Dimitar Berbatov, although those searching for a major differential may even consider Wayne Rooney, depending on his showing for England tomorrow night.

Blackpool
Ian Holloway’s Tangerine Army are an unlikely source of Fantasy talent but their start to the season, coupled with a kind run of games to come, has them well and truly in the reckoning now. With a squad hurriedly assembled, and five away games in the first seven, it’s not surprising that Blackpool failed to attract early interest in their budget wares. October has them spending a lot more time on home turf however, suddenly making them a key source for those looking to balance the books. DJ Campbell and Luke Varney provide your shoestring Fantasy Premier League (FPL) candidates up front at just £4.5m each, while Charlie Adam is £5.2m (and on the rise) as Blackpool’s set-piece supremo and key influence in midfield. Watch this space for a follow-up article on him.

Newcastle
Chris Hughton’s side have surprised us with defensive resolve and in Andy Carroll, have a centre-forward of genuine menace. He may have been benched at City last time out but, fresh from signing a new five-year contract, Carroll would seem likely to return just in time for a run of fixtures that find the Magpies facing four home games in the next six. Those home matches will see Wigan, Sunderland, Blackburn and Fulham arrive in town – all opponents that Newcastle and Carroll will fancy themselves against. An away trip to Upton Park also looks profitable, so only a trip to the Emirates in Gameweek 11 appears to offer concern for owners of Newcastle’s attacking and defensive talent.

Also consider: Bolton, Everton, West Ham

The Lows…

Wolves

Wolves are now the only Premier League side left who have yet to keep a clean sheet this season, and looking at their upcoming slate, it looks like it could be a fair while before that unfortunate record shows any sign of improvement. Mick McCarthy’s men have one last flutter this week (at home to West Ham) where they can look to stop the rot, but other than that their place at the foot of the table could become all too familiar given the four fixtures that follow (che, MCY, mun, ARS). It’s hard to imagine too many Fantasy Managers being affected by Wolves’ slide into the relegation mire, but if you do have any of McCarthy’s stragglers in your squad, getting rid after Gameweek 8 looks a very smart option.

Sunderland

Ahmed Elmohammady is pushing his name as one of the few “out of position” propositions this season and Darren Bent is one of those strikers who appears to be 95% fixture-proof, even so, the schedule hints that we should stay clear of the Wearsiders for the foreseeable future. Those who have these players will, and should, surely keep hold of them – but when it comes to looking at investment, alarm bells of caution will be triggered by four away games in the next six fixtures.

Stoke

The teams we felt were worth singling out for investment had three home games on their plate; Stoke are the inverse opposite of that, with three away fixtures in the next four, while their one home tie has them facing Manchester United – not exactly very appealing right now. A Rory Delap throw-in can bring rewards against even the sternest defence on it’s day, but the low, low ranking on the difficulty scale of our ticker raises cause for concern when it comes to backing Stoke with our hard earned fantasy millions. Owners of Ryan Shawcross and his defensive colleagues will be fidgeting nervously and even those who jumped on Kenwyne Jones’ recent form will surely be looking out for alternatives for the month ahead.

Be wary of: Chelsea and Tottenham

O'Shea for defensive points, Salcido for attacking potential. If you can get the extra 0.1 then Kolarov when hes back.

        Isn't Di Matteo Swiss? 😉

Juuuust kidding Andy, nice article. As far as Darren bent goes- his apparent groin injury aside- would you go so far as to say he was an exception to the "don't touch Sunderland" mantra?

He does appear more or less fixture-proof, and is only 2 assists and 3 bonus behind Tevez: I see them as similar players, from a fantasy point of view at least: they'll consistently score something like a goal every other game, with the occasional brace thrown in for good measure. As you may have guessed, I'm pondering the possibility of a swap at some point in the next few weeks- would make up 1.9m for me to spend on my (mid)Field of Dreams, but Tevez just seems a more "glamourous" option.

I imagine he'll do okay over the next while, but with 4/6 away games (weren't his/Sunderland's stats heavily home weighted last season? Spitballing right now) I just couldn't advise it.

He's a perfectly fine striker and will get you your regular points scoring, but now he's not a bargain £7m like he was last year (those were the days), and as a fixture chaser, I couldn't convince myself to get him in on a spell like this.

I'd be much happier considering him in a more "oooh, Sunderland!" set of fixtures and then riding out a spell like this thinking he might bag one or two. But for right now, for me, I'd be sitting on my hands hoping on another striker facing WIG, BPL, WBA etc in the interim.

So far he's scored 3 at home and 2 away, although both those 2 came in one match.

I hear what you're saying about fixtures... hopefully he can drop a little in price in the meantime. I'm not going to be rushing to get him in, but I've got one eye on him. GW14 perhaps- or even as soon as GW11 if other factors force my hand. Or maybe not at all, Tevez has come through for me so far, I'm developing a bit of a soft spot for him.

Seeing as this is the only football message boards (actually the only message boards at all) that I go on, I'll ask here... Help is much appreciated. What is the easiest/cheapest way to get tickets to United match this weekend? I live in Ireland. My three sources I know are all not working out for some reason: from the United site they are expensive, from "Barry's Travel" it comes in a package deal which interferes with our schedule and from Viagogo (ticket exchange) I can't buy "until Manchester United confirms that the match has sold out" which I don't know if it will!

Brought VDV in on WC for Bale, have made my .1 and am seriously considering bringing Arteta in in his place for the time being, with fixtures and form, it seems like Everton and Arteta may attract the same interest as VDV and Tottenham did after his 2 goal haul last week.

Its a much better option, VDV has two tough away games in three and Spurs have the CL now so the team as a whole could struggle.

VDV is a pure bandwagon after two good goals, Spurs have a tough period coming up.

The VandervaArteta dilemma, as I'm referring to it, is pickling my head at the moment too. Form says Van der Vaart, fixtures say Arteta.

I think (for think, read hope) that VdV may go a little quieter over his next couple of games, and Arteta may edge it. My one main concern with Arteta though, and it's a major one, is the lack of ANY assists so far. They've been a fairly big part of his game in seasons past. Luckily though, his bonus haul is ticking over nicely.

Ultimately I would like both, but if I had to pick one now, I'd go Arteta.

Thinking about the same thing B&B... but every time I decide it's the thing to do someone reminds me that he's the highest scoring midfielder so far, with the same amount of goals as Drogba etc etc.

That said, he might be gone for me this week- away at Villa, with the possibility of a rest for the Champions League- might not have the balls to do it any other time.

Funnily enough, if he does go this week, neither Arteta nor Van der Vaart will be replacing him.

FWIW, Jonny, Arteta is hampered by the absense of a normal functioning striker, while Ban der Vaart seems to believe he can do both lobs at once. Who are we to disabuse him - it may be several more games before reality, or Carrick, kicks in.

I certainly am, I can't afford to have both Malouda and Drogba, and Drogba on free kicks sways it for me as to who is essential. Sometimes a move like that can be inspired as the player is nearing the top end of his value in the game, it has to be cold and calculated for me, and as I said, Drog just shades it

I posted on this last week...I think whether you keep or sell Malouda is a lot to do with your ranking. I'm way down and looking to gain ground, so will risk him only getting a couple of points a game in the next month (that's the thing with Malouda, he's normally either 10+ or 2 points). If I was top 10k, I'd keep him to keep the scoreboard ticking over, but I've got to begin to gamble.

I know people dont like planning ahead with transfers but i just want to see what people think about this.
I've 2.2 in the bank and a midfield of:
    VDV Nani Dempsey Cleverley Malouda
The only way i can get Fabs in is by Doing Malouda -> Fabs and i dont really want to do that.
So, I've done my transfers for this week and next week I was thinking of doing Cleverley -> Adam and the week after Dempsey -> Walcott
    What do people think?

Defense has been difficult to sort all year, best go Gerrard to Cesc and sort defense later. Then captain Cesc.

Foley to Crainey without disturbing the balance, but improving the fixtures. Same for Konchesky to Salcido, but you gain .1. Otherwise I would say your defence is as good as budgetary constraints allow ... 🙂

Adam Johnson is on my "to sell" list in order to get Fabs back very soon. Hope he'll start, but chances are he probably won't.

I'd definitely be playing Barton, but I don't like to have 3 players from the same team in a single week to be honest. He's a useful sub for me.

I think Adam is a must for that price tbh. Involved in everything and Blackpool play attacking and good footie. I was hoping to have him AND Barton as they rotate well. This would allow me to get rid of Dempsey when his fixtures toughen from GW 12 and buy in Kolorov at the back.

So I suppose question is Kolorov or Dempsey for foreseeable future?

Tevez for captain. nani is just too boom bust to trust as captain, wheras it seems doubtful that the spiritied but Sunday punter-ish style central defense of B'pool will keep Carlito down. Still Nani is at home, Tevez on the road so he is a reasonable second pick for (C). Tevez then. As for transfers, no hit unless it is for Cesc. I would make the Malouda to Cesc switch now, and captain Fabregas. Or just wait until next week for no hit.

Only 7% of teams own Fab at the moment, compared to Arshavin(16%) and Walcott (8%!!!!)

Not many have the ability to get Fab in for free or are willing to take a hit due to The Cup and h2h's, so it could be a nice diferential.
