The international break can get to the best Fantasy Managers. A fortnight of deliberation can lead to frustration and self-doubt; resistance to the “jerky knee” can quickly waver. We can only hope that you’ve steered clear of the delirium to this point and to help you through, we’re now looking to restore some normality to these pages, courtesy of our regular “frisking” of the upcoming Premier League fixtures…

The Highs…

Arsenal
A three home game in four setup is the key to the teams blinking wildly on the radar this week, and Arsene Wenger’s Gunners are the prime candidates when it comes to fulfilling that particular criteria. The three Emirates encounters look pretty tasty too. With Cesc Fabregas suggesting he’s available for a return and Theo Walcott also on the mend, the encounters at home to Birmingham, West Ham and Newcastle should bring goals and tempt investment in Wenger’s attacking cast.

Man United
Despite a disappointing 0-0 draw away at Sunderland, we stand firm over United’s fixtures being strong enough to consider them one of the best investments over the next month or so. Their three home matches in the next four start with the visit of Roberto Di Matteo’s West Brom side who, for all their merits, will surely grant United room to breathe on the Old Trafford turf and tempt investors in the attacking options on show. Right now those options are limited to Nani and Dimitar Berbatov, although those searching for a major differential may even consider Wayne Rooney, depending on his showing for England tomorrow night.

Blackpool
Ian Holloway’s Tangerine Army are an unlikely source of Fantasy talent but their start to the season, coupled with a kind run of games to come, has them well and truly in the reckoning now. With a squad hurriedly assembled, and five away games in the first seven, it’s not surprising that Blackpool failed to attract early interest in their budget wares. October has them spending a lot more time on home turf however, suddenly making them a key source for those looking to balance the books. DJ Campbell and Luke Varney provide your shoestring Fantasy Premier League (FPL) candidates up front at just £4.5m each, while Charlie Adam is £5.2m (and on the rise) as Blackpool’s set-piece supremo and key influence in midfield. Watch this space for a follow-up article on him.

Newcastle
Chris Hughton’s side have surprised us with defensive resolve and in Andy Carroll, have a centre-forward of genuine menace. He may have been benched at City last time out but, fresh from signing a new five-year contract, Carroll would seem likely to return just in time for a run of fixtures that find the Magpies facing four home games in the next six. Those home matches will see Wigan, Sunderland, Blackburn and Fulham arrive in town – all opponents that Newcastle and Carroll will fancy themselves against. An away trip to Upton Park also looks profitable, so only a trip to the Emirates in Gameweek 11 appears to offer concern for owners of Newcastle’s attacking and defensive talent.

Also consider: Bolton, Everton, West Ham

The Lows…

Wolves

Wolves are now the only Premier League side left who have yet to keep a clean sheet this season, and looking at their upcoming slate, it looks like it could be a fair while before that unfortunate record shows any sign of improvement. Mick McCarthy’s men have one last flutter this week (at home to West Ham) where they can look to stop the rot, but other than that their place at the foot of the table could become all too familiar given the four fixtures that follow (che, MCY, mun, ARS). It’s hard to imagine too many Fantasy Managers being affected by Wolves’ slide into the relegation mire, but if you do have any of McCarthy’s stragglers in your squad, getting rid after Gameweek 8 looks a very smart option.

Sunderland

Ahmed Elmohammady is pushing his name as one of the few “out of position” propositions this season and Darren Bent is one of those strikers who appears to be 95% fixture-proof, even so, the schedule hints that we should stay clear of the Wearsiders for the foreseeable future. Those who have these players will, and should, surely keep hold of them – but when it comes to looking at investment, alarm bells of caution will be triggered by four away games in the next six fixtures.

Stoke

The teams we felt were worth singling out for investment had three home games on their plate; Stoke are the inverse opposite of that, with three away fixtures in the next four, while their one home tie has them facing Manchester United – not exactly very appealing right now. A Rory Delap throw-in can bring rewards against even the sternest defence on it’s day, but the low, low ranking on the difficulty scale of our ticker raises cause for concern when it comes to backing Stoke with our hard earned fantasy millions. Owners of Ryan Shawcross and his defensive colleagues will be fidgeting nervously and even those who jumped on Kenwyne Jones’ recent form will surely be looking out for alternatives for the month ahead.

Be wary of: Chelsea and Tottenham

Please please someone help - look at the state of this:

    Foster (Harper)
Toure | Williamson | Shawcross (Sagna, Konchesky)
Bale | Malouda | Arshavin | Yaya Toure (Etuhu)
    Drogba | Tevez | Carroll

That's three red 'i's, a doubt over Yaya, Arshavin looking disinterested... any ideas? Want Fabs back but don't know if thats a waste of a transfer when I've already got Arshavin and there are more pressing areas to consider...

    Was thinking:

    Malouda > Nani
    Etuhu > Adam

I would ditch Sagna. He hasn't been consistent. Bring in O'Shea and definitely bring in Adam for Etuhu to get a bargain. I think Nani and Malouda should both be in. Can you do it with the funds and movements I just suggested if you take out Arshavin?

I've brought Fab in because I'm on my WC, but I reckon as long as you have Fab by GW10 the chances are you won't miss out on an absolute haul of points. You could sort out Sagna and Konchesky instead?

Well you have a solid team to play this weekend nonetheless. 4 point hit not worth it, Konchesky could play for pool. I would make Sagna OUT my priority though, too much money sitting on your bench, you can either do Sagna OUT Jara IN to save funds for a Fabregas switch, or you could do Sagna OUT O'Shea IN to capitalise on Man United's nice fixtures.

Next week Arshavin OUT Fabregas IN is a good move assuming you have done the Sagna OUT Jara IN move

Thanks for all the advice guys...

Konchesky will stay, need to bring Krul in for Harper at some point (not this week though)...

O'Shea in for Sagna is a great shout - feel I can live without Fabs for one more week...

Don't panic - consult Injuries and Bans with regard to return dates.

      Sagna to O'Shea/Salcido
      Konchesky to Coleman
Toure Y/Bale to Ban der Vaart/Arteta ... imo

Playing my WC this week and have made the following team:

    Foster, Al Habsi
    O'Shea, Elmo, Coleman, Jara, Simpson
    Faregas, Malouda, Nani, VDV, Adam
    Drogba, Chamack, Nolan

    0.2 in the bank.

I already had Malouda and Chamack. Given the fixtures, who do you reckon will score better in the next 5 weeks,

    1) Malouda + Chamack
    2) Arteta + Berbatov

I'm tempted to stick with 1) because I've had Malouda from the start. Also not convinced Berbatov is going to keep scoring so well. Any advice or thoughts appreciated.

Nice, playing Nolan as an OOP. I like it.

Anyone but Chamack. You have Fab. That's all you need. I would beef up Defence. Simpson/Coleman are either risks or have not played this year. If oshea gets rested you have Jara & Elmo!

Ha, sorry, I mean Carroll. Good points, I normally like having a good defence, this team is very out of character. Who though? The only ones floating my boat are Kolarov and Alex (untested and injured). I'm happy to downgrade Chamack and upgrade the defence in the next few weeks once I see Kolarov play.

I'm in the market for a cheap defender for Alex/Konchesky.
Can anyone tell me more about Everton's Coleman? I like the idea of getting an OOP Everton defender in. Will he play most games?

Other options are Alcaraz and Elmohamady.

I'm going for him and hoping konchesky is out for the merseyside derby. I can see him causing carragher or agger problems, whichever one plays at LB. He is a punt though, not guaranteed starts.

Even us Evertonians don't know if Coleman will get an extended run / become a regular. He looks good for the next few weeks in midfield though as he has played really well in his 2 starts with Pienaar out and Bily out of favour / under-performing. Moyes has been talking Coleman up too

He's definitely worth consideration, at least in the short(ish) term. He's so direct and attack-minded but I think if and when we get everyone fit he may be back on the bench, unless he keeps performing of course

I'm in the same boat as you.

If you don't have Mummy I would bring him in.
      Alcaraz is a steady play.
However, I am bringing in Coleman because he is only 4.4, has a decent run of fixtures, and is an oop. He is a bit of a risk but I'll take it, given his potential upside.

    Toure / O’Shea / Huth (Williamson)(Bramble)
Nani / Malouda / Etherington/ Van Der Vaart / Adam
    Berbatov / Drogba (Odemwingie)

To bring in Fabregas I could do:

    Toure>Jara
    Etherington>Fabregas
    Berbatov>K Davies

...would leave me with 0.0 in bank....or better to take out Malouda for Fabregas instead of ditching Berbatov?

I know. I don't want to get rid of him. It's not a bad midfield as it is...It's whether to sacrifice the whole line up just for Fabregas. It's happening to a lot of us.

Another option to get in Fab (which still includes getting rid of Etherington!) might be Coleman instead of Toure and Elmander instead of Kevin Davies and play a 4-5-1 with Drogba?\

Looking at forwards, it certainly seems like all of us doing the re-shuffle for Fab are putting a lot of faith in him getting goals in order to make up for the sacrifices!

        I'm still deciding!

I know they lose points for conceeding too much, but it's really simple. Everyone gets 4 for a goal or 3 for an assist IIRC, but I don't know how Baines got 8 points a while back. Maybe they have MOTM too.

I dunno, playing Coleman could pay off well however I'd be nervous of a Liverpool backlash (HAS to happen sometime and the derby might well be the place) Coleman carries a little more of an attacking potential, but personally speaking I would play the safer option in Williamson.

I'm not the hodge, but I think that SAF will won't to try and get a settled back four going, therefore limiting o'shea's likelihood of being rotated (with the possible exception of the next game). It's been a while since we've had what I consider as our "first" choice defence all available and I think Fergie will relish the chance to play them all together over a consistent run of league games- no matter what the opposition...

    Krul - Hart

    A.Cole - O'Shea - Elmohamady - J.Enrique - Coleman

    Malouda - Nasri - Bale - Adam - Dempsey

    Drogba - Berbatov - Carroll
