The international break can get to the best Fantasy Managers. A fortnight of deliberation can lead to frustration and self-doubt; resistance to the “jerky knee” can quickly waver. We can only hope that you’ve steered clear of the delirium to this point and to help you through, we’re now looking to restore some normality to these pages, courtesy of our regular “frisking” of the upcoming Premier League fixtures…

The Highs…

Arsenal
A three home game in four setup is the key to the teams blinking wildly on the radar this week, and Arsene Wenger’s Gunners are the prime candidates when it comes to fulfilling that particular criteria. The three Emirates encounters look pretty tasty too. With Cesc Fabregas suggesting he’s available for a return and Theo Walcott also on the mend, the encounters at home to Birmingham, West Ham and Newcastle should bring goals and tempt investment in Wenger’s attacking cast.

Man United
Despite a disappointing 0-0 draw away at Sunderland, we stand firm over United’s fixtures being strong enough to consider them one of the best investments over the next month or so. Their three home matches in the next four start with the visit of Roberto Di Matteo’s West Brom side who, for all their merits, will surely grant United room to breathe on the Old Trafford turf and tempt investors in the attacking options on show. Right now those options are limited to Nani and Dimitar Berbatov, although those searching for a major differential may even consider Wayne Rooney, depending on his showing for England tomorrow night.

Blackpool
Ian Holloway’s Tangerine Army are an unlikely source of Fantasy talent but their start to the season, coupled with a kind run of games to come, has them well and truly in the reckoning now. With a squad hurriedly assembled, and five away games in the first seven, it’s not surprising that Blackpool failed to attract early interest in their budget wares. October has them spending a lot more time on home turf however, suddenly making them a key source for those looking to balance the books. DJ Campbell and Luke Varney provide your shoestring Fantasy Premier League (FPL) candidates up front at just £4.5m each, while Charlie Adam is £5.2m (and on the rise) as Blackpool’s set-piece supremo and key influence in midfield. Watch this space for a follow-up article on him.

Newcastle
Chris Hughton’s side have surprised us with defensive resolve and in Andy Carroll, have a centre-forward of genuine menace. He may have been benched at City last time out but, fresh from signing a new five-year contract, Carroll would seem likely to return just in time for a run of fixtures that find the Magpies facing four home games in the next six. Those home matches will see Wigan, Sunderland, Blackburn and Fulham arrive in town – all opponents that Newcastle and Carroll will fancy themselves against. An away trip to Upton Park also looks profitable, so only a trip to the Emirates in Gameweek 11 appears to offer concern for owners of Newcastle’s attacking and defensive talent.

Also consider: Bolton, Everton, West Ham

The Lows…

Wolves

Wolves are now the only Premier League side left who have yet to keep a clean sheet this season, and looking at their upcoming slate, it looks like it could be a fair while before that unfortunate record shows any sign of improvement. Mick McCarthy’s men have one last flutter this week (at home to West Ham) where they can look to stop the rot, but other than that their place at the foot of the table could become all too familiar given the four fixtures that follow (che, MCY, mun, ARS). It’s hard to imagine too many Fantasy Managers being affected by Wolves’ slide into the relegation mire, but if you do have any of McCarthy’s stragglers in your squad, getting rid after Gameweek 8 looks a very smart option.

Sunderland

Ahmed Elmohammady is pushing his name as one of the few “out of position” propositions this season and Darren Bent is one of those strikers who appears to be 95% fixture-proof, even so, the schedule hints that we should stay clear of the Wearsiders for the foreseeable future. Those who have these players will, and should, surely keep hold of them – but when it comes to looking at investment, alarm bells of caution will be triggered by four away games in the next six fixtures.

Stoke

The teams we felt were worth singling out for investment had three home games on their plate; Stoke are the inverse opposite of that, with three away fixtures in the next four, while their one home tie has them facing Manchester United – not exactly very appealing right now. A Rory Delap throw-in can bring rewards against even the sternest defence on it’s day, but the low, low ranking on the difficulty scale of our ticker raises cause for concern when it comes to backing Stoke with our hard earned fantasy millions. Owners of Ryan Shawcross and his defensive colleagues will be fidgeting nervously and even those who jumped on Kenwyne Jones’ recent form will surely be looking out for alternatives for the month ahead.

Be wary of: Chelsea and Tottenham

People have short memories. In GW4 Fabregas Fabregas was still apparently loyal to Barcelona, unfit and/or off form. 90% of my posts here were advising people to captain Fabregas (BW) ahead of Drogba (wh). Fabregas is class. If Arsenal win, he'll probably get the 3BP, he's on every set piece and throw in a cheeky 1 for possible clean sheet. Then go back a little less-short term... how many times has he scored 10+ points over the last three years?

It was a rhetorical question, but...

          06/07: 5.1 PPG
          07/08: 6.5 PPG
          08/09: 5.1 PPG
          09/10: 8.8 PPG

Yes it does: he's a very good fantasy football player. It's not like I quoted Shakespeare. It may seem like an obvious statement but not if you've been reading some of the captain choice discussions this week.

nice team but i like adam and the omewinggie guy from wba instead of albrighton and bent and then with the close to 3m change that can help get fabergas in latter. plus i dont like doubling up the toon defence lose simpson and get a wolves guy in they play defence first then offence so may grab a few clean sheets this season

As for toon defence, its 3.9 for a bench-warmer-come-player. I see what your saying, and have looked at foley (thanks locarno), its just that they havent hit form, defensively, yet.

I'd personally look at Al Habsi instead of Krul and then seek to replace Gohouri so you arent doubling up on Newcastle, WBA or Wigan defenders. Potentially even downgrade Ashley Cole to Alex then use the extra cash to bring in Samba and O'Shea or a better keeper.
The rest of your side is good particularly the three strikers, keep an eye on the Bent and Albrighton injuries. Fabregas is obviously one of the most effective FPL players - he is currently only owned by around 7% of owners which is frankly mental, if you were to get him in (and I advise you do) again the route could be to downgrade A.Cole and upgrade VdV if finances allow, if you need some extra moola then downgrade Tevez to Berbatov (who has kind fixtures)

is Al-Habsi a sure starter now? Would like to get rid of Gohouri, then again he could be just as a risk to keep (than to bring in Al-Habsi).

I do keep looking at how much is tied up in Cole, but I also know he could also have 2 goals by now (hit the bar and just offside vs arsenal), so i think in that respect he is a keeper.

Berbatov has annoyed me as i didnt get him at the start, before his goals and prise rises! I would also captain bent, but i wouldnt be so sure about Berba.

Al-Habsi has taken his chance and is performing well for Wigan - I can't see him being dropped anytime soon. If you want Fabregas then you have to compromise, one of your big hitters has to go - looking at your side I'd suggest either Cole or Tevez, there is decent logic that with Chelsea's fixtures tightening and possible rotation due to CL then Malouda remains a possibility for an option to change. Out of the three though I would without a second though do Cole out Alex in.

for the rooney question i am with you i feel that for 11.4 he may not of had an injury all along and now is fresh and has his mind on the job. big risk but thats the fun with the gamble. the others will say berbatov is rested all week nailed on to start and rooney might only get 65mins with no form behind him.

    Hey guys,
I'd really appreciate it if someone might take a look at my team:
    Jaas / Foster
    Alex / Shawcross / O'Shea / Elmo / Dann
    Bale / Malouda / Ferguson / S.Petrov / Scholes
    Berbatov / Drogba / Tevez

I am currently thinking of Alex and Scholes out for Alcaraz and Nani.

Then hope Malouda/Berba/Tevez shows signs of getting rubbish before Fabregas in GW10!

    Thanks!

Hmmmm.... I'd be reluctant to get rid of Etherington, he's unrivalled in that price range. 5 assists in 7 games is pretty damn impressive, and you can play him in any home game and expect him to do something...

But, if it is the only way of getting Nani, who is pretty essential, then so be it... I'd rather Adam over N'Zogbia though. Wigan don't score enough goals.

If I was really dumb (I kind of am, I don't have a WC to use now) I'd drop my entire back 5 for:

    Crainey. Jara. Huth. Coleman. Williamson.

Just so the rest of my team would look like this...

Fabregas. Malouda. Etherington. Van Der Vaart. Adam
    Drogba. Tevez. Odemwingie

    But...I won't.

Atiila, re:the Guthrie article today, how do you rate him? Personally, if we keep playing 4-5-1 / 4-3-3 with Carroll up and Routledge/Gut outside, I dont think he should even be close to pushing think Barton and Tiote out, unless for a rest/injuries etc...what you think?

I wouldnt mind seeing R Taylor have a pop out wide sometimes too, his crossing is so much better than Routledge's, and maybe if Simpson is back, his pace could help make up for Taylor's lack of it?

I agree with you on both counts. Guthrie is a useful hard working player but I think we have two cracking centre mids in Barton and Tiote so I can't see him pushing out either of those. I seem to remember him operating on the right from time to time, and maybe that is an option particularly if we are up against a good left winger as Guthrie would work harder and cover better than Routledge.
Ryan Taylor is good from set pieces and can deliver a decent ball but he is way to sloooow, I wouldn't be too pushed if he moved on in Jan.

Van der Vaart or Bale? VdV is obviously on form, but as many of us who've had Bale from the start he's not too shabby either and also a cheeky little 0.8m cheaper. Add to that the sell on difference and youre looking at paying a whole 1-1.2m more to upgrade to a player of the same team with pretty similar scoring potential. Is VdV really worth it for us early Bale owners?

Bale will always carry the risk of being played left back and think VDV has taken the free kick role from him.

+1, it's a coin toss if you've had bale from the beginning like me, but given how high up vdv plays and his new free-kick role i think he's worth the extra .8-1.

He won't be rested for the Villa game, unless he is extremely tired, because that is actually quite a hard game.. But he may be rested for the Wolves game after that... I've written loads of stuff about Malouda and rotation, it's all here:

because i think fabs is more valuable than malouda and i can't afford both and i already have two chelsea players (drogs/cole)- don't want all my eggs in one basket. also w/fat frank coming back and kalou they'll surely take away from some of malouda's pts.

no probs. if i can ask, would you downgrade cole to alex to get enough cash to bring in nani for ethers? nice thing about ethers is that he's such good value and gets pts. up there w/the best and leaves me w/some $ in the bank to play w/when needing to rotate players. but, w/the addition of nani my midfield would look scary: nani, vdv, fabs, arteta, adam.

i say go w/the differential and use bale/arteta. when vdv doesn't put up points you'll make the big jumps. it's not like bale is that much less likely to put up pts. w/vdv, just maybe not as many, but i think arteta will come good also- haven't parted w/him yet either.

Reckon Al-Muhammadi's price is quite entitled to rise at a reasonable rate of knots. Last night I posted some of his Opta's; for a 4.7m defender they were quite exceptional.

As for Sunderland's fixtures, I reckon they're being overly frowned upon. Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool & Arsenal couldn't them off this season so why should Villa, Blackburn, Newcastle and Stoke be expected to fare much better?

Currently the leading FPL Points per Million defender and second only to Charlie Adam as a midfielder, I'm of the opinion that another decent points haul in the next couple of fixtures will see his ownership far transcend it's current 7%.

Little question, why are Gueye, Milijas etc. well above 100% and still not dropping? Wrong numbers like Aquilani last year?

Was just messing around with my team out of boredom. Doing Hart - Robinson and Tevez - Elmander/Odemwinge will give me a midfield of, Nani, Malouda, Fabregas, VDV and Arteta. Damn tasty!

Carling a), as Alex has also suffered rotation/resting, and Chelsea are very busy, as well as having 3 away in the next 4.

downgrade cole to alex to get enough cash to bring in nani for ethers? nice thing about ethers is that he’s such good value and gets pts. up there w/the best of them and leaves me w/some $ in the bank to play w/when needing to rotate players. but, w/the addition of nani my midfield would look scary: nani, vdv, fabs, arteta, adam.

I think Man Utd coverage would be a good idea for the next 4 games (all season, really), so Nani would be good. Stoke's next 4 includes 3 away games: bol MAN eve sun. You might be able to get Ethers back in for someone after that run.

right, cheers. i've already used my 2 free transfers though bringing in vdv/fabs. should i take a hit to bring in nani for arteta maybe, since it would only require one move? otherwise i'd have to take a hit next week to bring in nani for ethers after freeing up some cash elsewhere(most likely dropping cole for alex if he's fit)

        Team is -

        Foster, Hahnemann
        Salcido, Konchesky, Shawcross, Jara, Enrqiue
        Barton, Malouda, Nani, Bale, Etherington
        Drogba, Chamakh, Torres

I'll either do (got 2 transfers)

        Torres -> Piquinnone
        Bale -> Fabregas

        then Chamakh -> Tevez

        Or Torres -> Tevez

Then next week Chamakh -> Piq. Bale -> Fabregas

Which way round works best? I am thinking Torres -> Tevez

As long as he gets back OK - I think I'll do Torres -> Tevez and bench bloody Bale.

It will mean losing loads of Dollars on Chamakh and Bale though :'(

            Cheers pal, appreciate the thoughts.
I'll probably just leave Fabregas until GW10... Don't fancy him v Man City.
Torres -> Tevez, Shawcross -> Elmo this week.
Ethers -> N'Zog, Chamakh -> Piq next week (4 pointer)

Then I should have plenty of fundage to go Bale -> Fab

Everyone's happy, except Torres Magic but his sites still very useful 🙂

Evening all. I've pretty much decided my strategy for the next while is to have Drogba & 2 cheap forwards. This allows me to have Malouda/Nani/Fabregas/Petrov/Davies in the middle. Also allows me to keep A Cole and probably take Kolarov in a couple of weeks. Petrov will prob go after his nice fixtures. My question is ; from the watchlist (or others) what 6.5m forward would you go for? I already have Carroll btw. Elmander/Davies? (means I would double up on Bolton...not keen to do that) or Odemwengie bandwagon? or Varney/Campbell from Blackpool? or Obinna? or Rodallega?

Any suggestions who rotates best with Carroll? (sorry for all the ?s!)

Surely if you're diung that strategy then you should get VDV and one other cheap mid instead of petrov and davies? (assuming you're playing 442- though I suppose you could be going 352)
