The international break can get to the best Fantasy Managers. A fortnight of deliberation can lead to frustration and self-doubt; resistance to the “jerky knee” can quickly waver. We can only hope that you’ve steered clear of the delirium to this point and to help you through, we’re now looking to restore some normality to these pages, courtesy of our regular “frisking” of the upcoming Premier League fixtures…

The Highs…

Arsenal
A three home game in four setup is the key to the teams blinking wildly on the radar this week, and Arsene Wenger’s Gunners are the prime candidates when it comes to fulfilling that particular criteria. The three Emirates encounters look pretty tasty too. With Cesc Fabregas suggesting he’s available for a return and Theo Walcott also on the mend, the encounters at home to Birmingham, West Ham and Newcastle should bring goals and tempt investment in Wenger’s attacking cast.

Man United
Despite a disappointing 0-0 draw away at Sunderland, we stand firm over United’s fixtures being strong enough to consider them one of the best investments over the next month or so. Their three home matches in the next four start with the visit of Roberto Di Matteo’s West Brom side who, for all their merits, will surely grant United room to breathe on the Old Trafford turf and tempt investors in the attacking options on show. Right now those options are limited to Nani and Dimitar Berbatov, although those searching for a major differential may even consider Wayne Rooney, depending on his showing for England tomorrow night.

Blackpool
Ian Holloway’s Tangerine Army are an unlikely source of Fantasy talent but their start to the season, coupled with a kind run of games to come, has them well and truly in the reckoning now. With a squad hurriedly assembled, and five away games in the first seven, it’s not surprising that Blackpool failed to attract early interest in their budget wares. October has them spending a lot more time on home turf however, suddenly making them a key source for those looking to balance the books. DJ Campbell and Luke Varney provide your shoestring Fantasy Premier League (FPL) candidates up front at just £4.5m each, while Charlie Adam is £5.2m (and on the rise) as Blackpool’s set-piece supremo and key influence in midfield. Watch this space for a follow-up article on him.

Newcastle
Chris Hughton’s side have surprised us with defensive resolve and in Andy Carroll, have a centre-forward of genuine menace. He may have been benched at City last time out but, fresh from signing a new five-year contract, Carroll would seem likely to return just in time for a run of fixtures that find the Magpies facing four home games in the next six. Those home matches will see Wigan, Sunderland, Blackburn and Fulham arrive in town – all opponents that Newcastle and Carroll will fancy themselves against. An away trip to Upton Park also looks profitable, so only a trip to the Emirates in Gameweek 11 appears to offer concern for owners of Newcastle’s attacking and defensive talent.

Also consider: Bolton, Everton, West Ham

The Lows…

Wolves

Wolves are now the only Premier League side left who have yet to keep a clean sheet this season, and looking at their upcoming slate, it looks like it could be a fair while before that unfortunate record shows any sign of improvement. Mick McCarthy’s men have one last flutter this week (at home to West Ham) where they can look to stop the rot, but other than that their place at the foot of the table could become all too familiar given the four fixtures that follow (che, MCY, mun, ARS). It’s hard to imagine too many Fantasy Managers being affected by Wolves’ slide into the relegation mire, but if you do have any of McCarthy’s stragglers in your squad, getting rid after Gameweek 8 looks a very smart option.

Sunderland

Ahmed Elmohammady is pushing his name as one of the few “out of position” propositions this season and Darren Bent is one of those strikers who appears to be 95% fixture-proof, even so, the schedule hints that we should stay clear of the Wearsiders for the foreseeable future. Those who have these players will, and should, surely keep hold of them – but when it comes to looking at investment, alarm bells of caution will be triggered by four away games in the next six fixtures.

Stoke

The teams we felt were worth singling out for investment had three home games on their plate; Stoke are the inverse opposite of that, with three away fixtures in the next four, while their one home tie has them facing Manchester United – not exactly very appealing right now. A Rory Delap throw-in can bring rewards against even the sternest defence on it’s day, but the low, low ranking on the difficulty scale of our ticker raises cause for concern when it comes to backing Stoke with our hard earned fantasy millions. Owners of Ryan Shawcross and his defensive colleagues will be fidgeting nervously and even those who jumped on Kenwyne Jones’ recent form will surely be looking out for alternatives for the month ahead.

Be wary of: Chelsea and Tottenham

    The Super Six.

Drogba, Fabregas, Tevez, Malouda, Nani, Van Der Vaart

    Do you need them all?

    My team:

    Foster, Krul

    Samba, Elmohamady, Alcaraz, Coleman, Jara

Fabregas, Malouda, Nani, Van Der Vaart, Albrighton

    Drogba, Tevez, Carroll

I'm on a wildcard, so considering tinkering.

    Malouda > Arteta
    Coleman > Kolarov/Boateng

Not convinced with the Malouda rest arguments, but if they are true, then the above transfers would be beneficial, no?

I think the big question for many will be - Malouda or Fab?
You can't have the loaded midfield and 2 expensive strikers.

Malouda has had 2 low points games in a row now and there is the rotation question...vs...will Fab play 60+ minutes (and not reinjure himself)?

I don't think you can have them all without compromising the rest of your team.

I'm aiming for them all minus VDV.

These guys "cover" the top 5 teams (Liverpool don't count).

        Would you disagree with that?

I think they are worthy of special mention because of that and because of their super high fantasy scoring potential.

Berbatov is a debatable addition, but he doesn't have dominance on setpieces and penalties, and if Rooney comes back, he won't be quite as influential.

I think its too early to put VDV on there, so no, I don't think they are all essential.

and I don't think its as much Fabs vs. Malouda as it is Fabs vs. VDV, and WHEN To get Fabs, now or for week 10...in which case I think Malouda is the better bet (for now)

    Sorensen Carson
    Dann Terry Jara Konchesky Foley
    Nani Etherington Arshavin Malouda Ferguson
    Berbatov Tevez Chamakh

0.2 in the bank and going to do Arshavin -> Fabregas (probably GW10). Would also like to transfer in Elmohamady this week, but is it crazy to get rid of Terry now for him, or just do Chamakh -> Odemwingie/Elmander to free funds for Fabs, or something else..?

I'm a reformed character (well trying to be) so no big points hits - I'll try and stick with the occasional 4pt

    Current team:

    Robinson (Foster)
    Samba, Enrique, Elmo (Jara, Alcaraz)
    Nani, Malouda, Arshavin, Toure (Albrighton)
    Berbatov, Tevez, Drogba

Looking okay for the weekend? Who to captain - Nani?

Thinking next week would be the time to downgrade either Tevez or Berbs (can't decide which) to a cheaper forward - and upgrade Arsh to Fabs (and possibly Toure to ?).

    Any thoughts?

Good team mate - I'd personally play Elmohamady over Jones, it could backfire but in essence he is like having an extra midfielder in your team.

I'd consider playing Etherington over Adam too... Adam = points if there is a penalty, no points if there ain't..

            Your defence is expensive.

As a general rule I always have 1 4 million defender and 1 4.5 million midfielder (I have Barton and Jara), this means I have extra cash.

I mean my front line in a few weeks will be -

Fabregas, Malouda, Nani, N'Zog, Nani, Tevez, Drogba, Piquinne.

Fabregas, Nani, Malouda, Tevez, Drogba would all be fixture proof in my eyes!

ya, that's the dilemma i'm stuck with too. thinking though that chances for a blackburn cleanie at home are high and don't want to bench adam at home as he always picks up the bps if they get a result. had elmo and adam both on bench last week- that hurt. i want to get nani in badly, but other than taking a hit and bringing him in for arteta, i don't see any other possibility. next week i would downgrade cole to alex to get nani, but alex is now out injured.

Unnecessary capital letters, I do them to often. (Checks for unneeded capitals in that sentence). I am using Safari just normally and I have spell check on (only reason I knew how to spell sentence back there.

    Hi

With Changes I'm thinking of feilding the following team for GW8

    Robinson

    Cole, Coleman, Vidic

    Nani, Adam, Etherington, Malouda, Nolan

    Berbatov, Tevez

Alternative transfer could be Arteta or Cahill instead of Nani?

Sorry if this is a boring post but I like constructive comments on this site! Incidentally I have paid my £12.50 now so I deserve help and advice!!

Nice team but I think your midfield is too weak. I'd look to downgrade Vidic to O' Shea and then upgrade one of your 5 mil midfielders to Bale or VdV over time

Correct and I still have my WC intact.

looking at a number of options in order to get Drogba in for GW9 and Fabregas for GW10

This will mean defensive downgrades and free up a lot of cash.

Think I've got it sussed but Berbatov will be the victim...?

Listing 3 extra names in brackets would have been easier than checking your link as doing both seems silly. You could always play the other defender. Obviously I wasn't the only one who didn't check your link so more information = better advice. You are obviously not dumb. The gravatar may disagree though.

To be honest I love fantasy football but everybody in my league had Drogba and I wanted to make a statement of doing well without following the crowd.

Ermm, I have N'Zogbia, he would be an option?? Nasri perhaps or Walcott if you can afford, one of those two would be good but obviously they are in a different price bracket. If your brave then go for a West Ham player, Martin Petrov (Bolton) has some nice fixtures and is in that bracket.

I started with that combo. I got rid of Hahn on my wildcard after GW2 and hot Jaask in, I would advise doing it, if you are taking a hit or aren't on a wildcard then I think you can hold off until GW10. If you are on a wildcard then get Jaask in this week.

      Play

      Hahn this week

      Foster week after.

      Jaask GW10.

Imo if cesc declared himslef fit just after Chelsea game and received international pardons, surely with 0/6pts for arsenal in their last two he will play!

But against B'Ham ?? I admit I do not have him. But he will just get man marked by Ferguson for the entire game. If he starts he will get just over 60 probably, I see him featuring for definite and then getting the full 90 at City and again against West Ham and Newcastle, But Wenger likes to ease players back, I think the final 30 minutes wouldn't be a bad prediction given Wenger's history.

Wenger normally likes to ease players back, except it seems when it comes to Cesc. So many times last season he threw him into games when he clearly wasn't fit enough, only for him to get injured again. Basically because with Cesc in the team, Arsenal win games, without him they generally struggle.

          Theres 2 options.

Beat the price and get Fabregas for GW8. You run the risk of him getting injured again v Birmingham, City and a Champs league game.

I'm getting him for GW10 but only because its easier for me.

Hes on his way back now... definately a potential bargain.

I'll either go Odemwingie & Hitz OR N'Zog and Piquonnie

I may go the former if he plays v Wolves.

You've taken a 4 pointer already Attila?! You must be dreading each new tweet!

Let me guess what your trannies have been:

Must be Gerrard, Milner and Jean Claude out (easy stuff), but who in? Definitely Fabs, almost certainly VDVDVDVD and a punt on Coleman or Simpson.

Two outta three aint bad 😉
It only cost me 4 points as I had a double free transfer doodah saved up.
          OUT - Gerrard, Milner, Bale
          IN - Nani, VdV, Fabregas

Now my pretty four man mid is Nani, VdV, Fabregas, Malouda
I had to do it early to beat the price changes so its been a long squeakyarsed international break as I await the injuries. Van Damme is on the bin list, as is Routledge but they will have to wait until next GW.

Nice moves though. I'm intimidated as hell by Nani this week, and really want him in but there's no easy way of doing so. I've got two freebies this week but one is the mandatory Gerrard to Fabs. I'm not sure about how to use the second or if I should leave it for next week. There are a few cheeky defender punts surfacing, but I feel it's probably one week too early to make them.

Actually, I have Nani but not having Berbatov scares the living daylights out of me this weekend.

Nani will have played 2 Internationals by the weekend plus Champions League games to come next week, so, knowing my luck, I could see Sir Alex pulling him after about 60 mins with Utd 2/3 up.

Berbatov is fresh and will be there tormenting the Albion for the full 90.

I have to hope Carroll rediscovers his shooting boots this weekend.

Oddly enough, I can see both Berbs and Carroll scoring at least twice this weekend.
