When Chris Hughton brought us news of Fabricio Collicini’s return to training earlier this week, he emphasised the increase competition for places in the Newcastle defence, hinting that no one was guaranteed a start within his back four.

This comes at a time when Fantasy Managers will be looking to the Newcastle defence for potential points. As we outlined in our recent “Frisking The Fixtures“, the Magpies are about to embark on a run of four home games in the next six and, with our Members Team Stats demonstrating that Hughtons’ side are amongst the tightest defensive outfits in the league, the budget offerings become worthy transfer targets over the next month.

Collicini’s injury after 36 minutes of the defeat to Man City granted Sol Campbell his first Premier League appearance for the Magpies. He took his opportunity. Campbell looked at home alongside Mike Williamson and demonstrated his wealth of experience to snuff out City attacks on several occasions. Hughton will be sorely tempted to build a new central defensive partnership around that experience.

“Sol is just a good player, so it doesn’t surprise me he’s come in and looked good. Part of the reason why we brought him in was because of that quality and experience that he showed last weekend.”

The Williamson/Collicini pairing has not let Hughton down. Newcastle have impressed defensively and in former Pompey defender Williamson, they appear to have a found a prospect which has handed Fantasy Managers an unexpected and welcome budget option within their rearguard.

Hughton will ponder the option of starting with Campbell but, in all likelihood, he will find himself on the bench with Collicini restored. In the mid-to-long term however, there is clearly uncertainty surrounding Newcastle’s central defensive pairing; even the impressive Williamson is now under threat.

This leaves us Fantasy Managers looking to Newcastle’s full-backs for options. At just 3.9 in the Fantasy Premier League game, Danny Simpson’s return to fitness could offer the cheapest route to potential returns. Having been a favourite of Hughton’s last season, he would seem likely to oust James Perch at right-back. Judging by Hughton’s comments recently however, Simpson’s return is at least another week away.

“For Danny Simpson I would have to say the game has come a little bit too quickly for him. Although he has worked very, very hard in rehab and he is at a good level of fitness, he has been out for a long time and we have to be aware of that…I would have thought we’re maybe looking at another week or so for him.”

That leaves Jose Enrique – the classy Spanish left-back who is surely one of the first names on the teamsheet and an untouchable member of the Newcastle lineup. Enrique, currently fifth in our Watchlist rankings, will cost you more but offers security and the promise of the occasional assist, with strong involvement in Newcastle’s attacks down the left-flank. For me, he presents the best option, although the 4.5 FPL price tag involves that extra level of investment that may well make some just a little nervous.

Finally of course, we could turn to Tim Krul in goal. A benefactor of Steve Harper’s recent shoulder injury, the Dutchman should be good for starts over the next two months and offers a fine budget keeper option at just 4.0 in the FPL. Krul can be found ranked second in our Keeper Watchlist rankings.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Don't see that Johnny. Neville and Hibbert offer strong competition there. He will be used more as a sub. Coleman will realistically start the next 2 games - Liv (h) and Spurs (a) - not for me thank you, unless he is so good in those games he looks to keep Osman or Pienaar out. But I don't see that happening.

Nasri's output will most likely be affected with Fabregas' return, you have cover in Bolton/Birmingham/Sunderland defences - nice. Etherington with Stoke's fixtures is the only one I would want ot change there, but then, he always seems to get something regardless of opposition.

I would rethink both. A has a cracking midfield but weak frontline. Team B looks good but you have 2 expensive defenders who are rotation risks and still not match fit.

At first I thought A - because Bosingwa may not play (I am on WC too, and had him in, but don't want to take that chance), great midfield. You get a far more solid defence with Option B so it is not like comparing like for like here. But I am leaning towards B, more solid team

    Hi folks,
Seeing as there appears to be a number of knowledgeable posters about at the mo thought it might be worth trying to get some opinions on how best to accomodate Fabs in my team, either this week or in the next couple. Im prob going to have to lose either Malouda or Nani and don't really want to do either but feel I've got to have Cesc!

    Team is:

    Foster Robinson
    Konchesky Elmo Jara Perch Cole
    Nani Davies Malouda Nasri Bale
    Tevez Drogba Carroll

    2 free transfers
    1.1 in the bank

I'm doing well so not sure I want to make too many major changes Nasri will go when Fabs comes in, not sure who else???

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm only considering it as I'd still have Drogba and Cole for Chelsea cover. Do you think its worth losing Nani to get Fabs in? That would leave me with no Man Utd representation though. Such a quandry.....

Rio's back injury seems to be a permanent problem that will be managed, but not cured. He'll need rests, and it could be hard to predict when those rests come. There's better value out there for 6.5.

The rationale is not madness in my view. One question, who will score more, Fabregas or Malouda, if the answer is Fabregas (which people couldn't be blamed for thinking, me included) then it is generally the move everyone is making.

I agree that it is not like we have seen a major shift in Malouda's form, but in circumstances where rotation has been mentioned following the Champions League, where Lampard is coming back and hence the points on the pitch will be diluted, and where Chelsea have had their glory run of fixtures for the time being, now is as good a time as any to remove Malouda.

It was ultimately a choice between Drogba OR Malouda for me, and while I am on WC and have not as yet taken out Malouda, a Malouda OUT Arteta IN move, keeping Drogba, makes more sense to me afor the time being.

I know it's a very small sample, but Malouda's points have been much better with Lampard playing than they have without. I agree with those who see rotation - but most players are subject to rotation and it's just something that his owners will have to swallow when it happens - and even if he comes on for cameo appearances he can still collect a few points.
