When Chris Hughton brought us news of Fabricio Collicini’s return to training earlier this week, he emphasised the increase competition for places in the Newcastle defence, hinting that no one was guaranteed a start within his back four.

This comes at a time when Fantasy Managers will be looking to the Newcastle defence for potential points. As we outlined in our recent “Frisking The Fixtures“, the Magpies are about to embark on a run of four home games in the next six and, with our Members Team Stats demonstrating that Hughtons’ side are amongst the tightest defensive outfits in the league, the budget offerings become worthy transfer targets over the next month.

Collicini’s injury after 36 minutes of the defeat to Man City granted Sol Campbell his first Premier League appearance for the Magpies. He took his opportunity. Campbell looked at home alongside Mike Williamson and demonstrated his wealth of experience to snuff out City attacks on several occasions. Hughton will be sorely tempted to build a new central defensive partnership around that experience.

“Sol is just a good player, so it doesn’t surprise me he’s come in and looked good. Part of the reason why we brought him in was because of that quality and experience that he showed last weekend.”

The Williamson/Collicini pairing has not let Hughton down. Newcastle have impressed defensively and in former Pompey defender Williamson, they appear to have a found a prospect which has handed Fantasy Managers an unexpected and welcome budget option within their rearguard.

Hughton will ponder the option of starting with Campbell but, in all likelihood, he will find himself on the bench with Collicini restored. In the mid-to-long term however, there is clearly uncertainty surrounding Newcastle’s central defensive pairing; even the impressive Williamson is now under threat.

This leaves us Fantasy Managers looking to Newcastle’s full-backs for options. At just 3.9 in the Fantasy Premier League game, Danny Simpson’s return to fitness could offer the cheapest route to potential returns. Having been a favourite of Hughton’s last season, he would seem likely to oust James Perch at right-back. Judging by Hughton’s comments recently however, Simpson’s return is at least another week away.

“For Danny Simpson I would have to say the game has come a little bit too quickly for him. Although he has worked very, very hard in rehab and he is at a good level of fitness, he has been out for a long time and we have to be aware of that…I would have thought we’re maybe looking at another week or so for him.”

That leaves Jose Enrique – the classy Spanish left-back who is surely one of the first names on the teamsheet and an untouchable member of the Newcastle lineup. Enrique, currently fifth in our Watchlist rankings, will cost you more but offers security and the promise of the occasional assist, with strong involvement in Newcastle’s attacks down the left-flank. For me, he presents the best option, although the 4.5 FPL price tag involves that extra level of investment that may well make some just a little nervous.

Finally of course, we could turn to Tim Krul in goal. A benefactor of Steve Harper’s recent shoulder injury, the Dutchman should be good for starts over the next two months and offers a fine budget keeper option at just 4.0 in the FPL. Krul can be found ranked second in our Keeper Watchlist rankings.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Well if I had it I'd play you. But considering the last time I played a football game since a sensible soccer demo about 15 years ago, I got beaten 11-0 (which apparantly is quite bad) I don't think £30 for an ass-kicking is a good investment.

Afternoon, must say if i had WC still then Jagielka if he is fit would be a defender I would definetly try to include.
His fixtures after Spurs away are excellent for a few months. And with Everton turning the corner now it appears the next 2 could also bring returns or keep him benched in reserve if needs be.

Surprising to see not one comment about him or asking what bringing him in.

Il be buying him without a doubt in 2 weeks.

Ya I can see the temptation in Coleman but he will be dropped back to the bench so enough given the options Moyes has.He just is far too much of a risk for me yet.
and 5.5. mil for Jagielka who always chips in with the odd bonus point is excellent value.
Him & Kolarov are the standout defenders for me over next few weeks/ months.

50-50. they're both unlikely to score more than 1 or 2 a season. as long as cahill's forehead is on the pitch you'd fancy baines to be among the top assisting defenders. jags for bps, baines for assists basically. shame baines' got prices so highly this season, and hilarious yobo got priced at 6mil whilst jagiela was 5.5mil

4 good fixtures in the next six, but they are planning on a more attacking approach, so this could effect their strong defensive record so far. I wouldnt money can be spent better elsewhere.

See this re the "fight" Brady had with Moss?

"Then one of the things that was overheard was Brady telling Moss, 'You need to cut your beard.' Moss counters, 'You need to get your hair cut. You look like a girl.'"

              Hilarious - Moss was right

I don't see it myself, all been denied by the parties involved. It was 'reported' by the guy, name is on the tip of my tounge, that Belichick dissed BIG time a few months back.
After last nights game, Moss on tv thanked Brady for a text received just before kick-off and said he was sorry that they(the Vikes) could'nt hand the enemy(the Jets) a defeat.

ya, saw that, no smoke without fire usually, Hansome Tom is Patriot to the core, Moss' attitude would have wound even him up, that being said, I think the media wanted there to be a spat between Brady and Moss

It was simply an amicable parting of the ways. New weapons on the offence and a change of emphasis that did'nt include Moss seeing much of the ball.

Actually, as much as I loved it when Moss was here, I approve of this trade.

The Pats became over reliant on the long ball with Moss and O'Brien's playcalling got stagnant as a result

You pretty much knew that even if Moss was double covered Brady would heave it downfield 60 yards and hope Moss would outjump the coverage.

The last 2 years the Pats have morphed into the 2004 Colts, a team we perennially used to laugh at because they had an all world offense that would light it up in the regular season and then cras and burn in the playoffs.

For all the ESPN pundits predicting the demise of the Pats post Moss, they seem to forget that Brady was carving up all world defenses with the likes of Givens and Patten while Moss was dogging it in Oakland.

If this means a return to the Patriot way then I'm all for it.

I think the two Titans on your team will hit it big this week.
Fantastic set of matches just gone though, very exciting monitoring the score-ticker on the bottom of the screen watching the Chiefs-Colts game.
One of my teams scored 208.78 this GW, on that league's message board someone wrote - '208 points - Holy Shit'

RNot far behind but really need to make a strong captain choice this week and catch my rival. Our teams are very similar as we both have
Dann, Malouda, VDV, Albrighton, Drogba, Tevez and injured Alex. So basically it boils down to.

    Mine:
    Robinson Elmo, O'shea, Faye
    Nani, Ferguson, Berbatov

    Against his:
    Foster, Hughes, Young, Williamson
    Arshavin, Scholes, Carrol

I'm almost certain he'll captain Tevez but i'm thinking Berbatov. Any ideas?

Different Manager who likes an old fashioned system (rigid 4 4 1 1 sometimes 4 4 2)with Young in the hole ahead of Ireland.
Unless he puts Young on the wing and drops Albrigton cant see Ireland playing as Gerard likes 2 dms.

It seems that the Villa manager(s) are pretty set on having Young playing in behind the lone frontman. That means that Ireland would have to play as part of the deeper midfield two to get in the side, and he's not defensively competent enough to play that role.

Petrov is undroppable, and a Petrov/Ireland midfield duo would be a disaster, just like in the Newcastle game...

I said it as soon as he signed, the only way he'll get in the side is if Young is shifted out wide and one of Albrighton/Downing is dropped. But it seems like that isn't going to happen.

Is having Nani essential even if you have Berbatov?

Ive not jumped onto the Luis train yet and im worried I may get left behind.

My transfer this week is Stevie G > Cesc , not going to change on that.

The rest of my midfield is, Bale, Cleverly, Malouda and Yaya.

I can only afford Malouda > Nani .... is it worth 4 points?

Good point... Yaya is a slight doubt .. my squad is ravaged to be honest and i was silly boy using my wildcard in the first international break.

Just trying to repair it the best I can

Malouda is a rotation risk... will probably play Villa away... which isnt screaming goals and then its Wolves away, in which he is likly to be rested.

Nani is smoking at the moment and could easily get a couple against WBA then its Stoke away who United have a decent record against.

Going to be a last minute decision me thinks

If Carlo is a creature of habit then I'd fancy Malouda to get his rest on Saturday - Correct me if I'm wrong but I remember his previous rotation being after the internationals and before the Champs League - although this time not a great deal of travel as both of France's games are at home.

I think Malouda will probably get the occasional rest, but I think this mass assumption that it will seemingly definitely be the Wolves fixture could very easily be wide of the mark.

It might ring true, of course it might, but it reeks of people wanting him to be rested then as it suits their idea of maybe selling him but not exactly the most substantiated assumption either.

I see it as this: Malouda will get the odd rest, I'm not willing to bet or pretend when it will be. Chelsea have shown they can win any game without any single one of their biggest players.

All I would say is that ever since the West Ham game, Carlo's rotation has been entirely predictable. Plenty of people called that Anelka would be rested against Blackpool, because he'd played the most football in the recent weeks, and low and behold, he was rested.

He won't be rested against Villa, unless he really needs it, but the Wolves game comes on the 23rd, after him playing matches on the 9th, 12th, 16th, 19th. If he were to play the Wolves game, then that would be 5 games in the space of two weeks.

And if he doesn't play the Wolves game, his fixtures for the next four are:

              avl - bla liv

Shocking. For me the only way to get Nani in is by getting rid of Malouda, and I'm perfectly happy to do that.

Unless he continues his ridiculous form, and I'm forced to get him back in, then he's probably out for a while. Aside from the Wolves, Fulham and Sunderland fixtures (all of which come at a time when rotation will be likely) Chelsea's fixtures in the next 10 are pretty poor..

Hopefully Drogba will be enough Chelsea coverage and getting rid of Malouda will allow me to afford some players who are the main men in their sides, i.e Nani, Arteta/Young.

Malouda to play against Wolves for 70min and get a rest in Russia seems as likely.

                    Hell its all speculation.

The trip to Russia is before the Wolves game... And I think it's probably the harder fixture... After all, Spartak are 2 for 2 in the CL, and Wolves are shit.

I've not problem with people selling Malouda, it's the entrenched belief that's built up around here that he's definitely missing the Wolves game. Utter baloney. He might, however, he might not.

And for Carlo being entirely predictable... I don't remember too many people thinking Malouda wouldn't start versus West Ham, if I'm right.

"ever since the West Ham game, Carlo’s rotation has been entirely predictable"

Obviously it's not guaranteed that Malouda will miss the Wolves game, but I'm not prepared to risk it when Nani has WBA stk TOT WLV coming up..

Becuase we all predicted one case of rest [for Anelka] now Carlo is entirely predictable then?

I'm sorry, I just don't see it. I've no problem people selling Malouda, toss I sold Drogba, and the idea of Malouda being rested ...but I think people singling out this Wolves fixture is as much to satisfy what they want to happen as with what they expect to happen.

Drogba, Malouda and Anelka will each be rotated at some point. They may all play the Wolves game, or ANY one of them may get rested.

True, but Malouda is the most likely IMO. He'll have played twice in the international break, whereas Drogba will have played once and Anelka won't have played at all, obviously!

i doubt for one minute he will every game to the end of the season but it wouldnt suprise me if he plays till january and then maybe donavan or some other loan comes in. As for piennar, he plays on the left so him coming back in the team means either osman or bilyetdinov takes colemans place and i cant see that happening at the moment. Only time will tell though.

also coleman being brought in has nothing to do with piennars injury as he came in before that happened. Colemans playing because of bilys loss of form/confidence, ancichebe's injury and osmans inability to play in that position. Unless coleman plays badly id expect him to start every game from now till xmas with the possible exception of this weeks derby (as moyes is like that when it comes to the derby, experience prefered etc).

Hi, I have a defensive nightmare this weekend with both Alex and Konchesky out of the equation. This leaves me with Elmohamady, Williamson and Tamas.

I have already made my transfer, so anything else will cost me 4 points. Only have 0.2m in the bank.

So, my question is, do I stick with Elmo, Williamson and Tamas or transfer Alex out, take the 4 pointer and bring in somebody like O'Shea and hope that Alex doesn't rise in price (unlikely) before he is fit to bring back in?

o'shea isn't certain to start against a team like west brom, so i wouldn't take a hit w/that risk. i say stick it out and don't take hits for defenders as one goal conceded pretty much makes it costly. rely on your offense for points.

Swap the word 'Arteta' with 'Young' and 'Everton' with 'Aston Villa'.

I'm looking at getting one of Young/Arteta in in a couple of weeks time, so I wouldn't recommend anyone to get rid of either of them.

    Any Seasiders around??

I was all settled on getting DJ Campbell in as my supercheap Torres replacement, but the article earlier today about goal involvement has me wondering about Varney again. Obviously I knew that he'd scored 2 and assisted 2, but somehow seeing it written out as "he's been involved in a goal every 70 minutes" makes him seem like great value. Especially when it's every 71 mins for Cesc, 88 mins for Malouda and 109 mins for Carrol.

Obviously I'm not expecting him (or Campbell for that matter) to keep up those sorts of returns, but I was just after some views from the fans.

P.S. I've asked this before, so sorry for the repeat, but I didn't get any replies from Blackpool fans last time round: always good to hear from someone who's watched them live.

haven't watched them live, sorry mate, but i have seen them play quite a bit and like varney's involvement more than campbell's. as the stats correctly point out, i'd go w/him over campbell if you're debating between the two.

not a seasider fan but i definitely respect their side and didn't write them off like most did when they entered the league- had adam from gw 1. i really like holloway as a manager too, top class. good luck this season, hope they stay up.

Yeah you've gotta love Blackpool's attitude, really hope they keep it up.

Not knowing a great deal about Campbell or Varney, I am now thinking I should go with form and get Varney. I'm sure whichever one I don't get will score this weekend!
