Since joining the club for £8.2m back in June 2008, Johan Elmander’s career at Bolton can hardly be described as a success. Five goals in his first season followed by just three goals last season had many doubting the club’s record signing’s ability to settle in the Premier League.

With Kevin Davies guaranteed a starting slot, Elmander’s first-team time diminished last season, as he vied with Ivan Klasnic for the sole remaining place up-front. Starting just 15 games, he managed the full 90 minutes on only 4 occasions, despite the club replacing Gary Megson with the less-negative Owen Coyle. His Fantasy Premier League (FPL) starting price this season, £5.5m, was a fair reflection of his impact to date, but the big Swede’s showing in the opening seven gameweeks have made something of a mockery of that price.

Elmander looks like a permanent fixture in the Bolton side this season, starting every league game to date, and his points total of 42 is the seventh-highest in the game so far. He’s scored 4 goals, made 2 assists and has been awarded 8 Bonus Points already. The most impressive aspect of these Bonus Points is he’s yet to be awarded all 3 in one game, accumulating his total over five of the seven games, a feat matched only by Didier Drogba and Dimitar Berbatov.

A look at the Members OPTA stats possibly offers an explanation as to why the Bonus judges look favourably upon his performances. Elmander is amongst the top ten for forwards in terms of “Shots” and “Shots on Target”. He sees plenty of the ball too, again amongst the top ten forwards for “Touches” and “Passes Made”. There’s no doubt he also puts in a shift defensively; he’s in the top ten forwards for “Duels“, “Aerial Duels“, “Clearances” and “Blocks“, and is top for “Tackles“, “Interceptions” and “Recoveries“. Add that to his four goals and the effect a regular starting place is having on his importance to the Bolton cause is obvious. A little faith in his ability by Owen Coyle has resulted in Elmander’s elevation to Bolton’s key player so far this season.

Elmander’s price has crept up to £5.8m as a result of his displays, and with Bolton now looking at three home games in the next four (and four in the next seven) more investment should be expected. This run of fixtures reads (STK, wig, LIV, TOT, eve, wol, NEW) and given that Elmander scored 6 points against both Arsenal and Man Utd already this season, there should be little, if no, trepidation about fielding him in matches against the “tougher” teams.

Somewhat bizarrely, Elmander has failed to find the net at home so far this season, yet has scored in every one of the Trotters’ away games. Given the form he brings into this upcoming kind run though, there’s every chance he’s about to put that Reebok drought to an end.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

You've got great players in your midfield, but maybe a bit too much expense paid there. I like to go with two higher priced players up front and one cheapie. It's a good team for this weekend though.

I was thinking of Rooney, but I'm happy enough with my forwards. I wouldn't get Lampard in just yet, but I was thinking something along the lines of Nasri/Arshavin, Scholes, even Parker, West Ham have a good few weeks coming up.

Any thoughts on who to pick between:

      Drogs,Tevez,Odemwingie.

ii) Same as the first one, only Elmo+Adam instead of O'Shea+Ferguson allowing me to bring Carson instead of Mignolet between the posts.

And just so you know,I also have VdV atm whom I'd only brought in during the intl. break to make money.I'm selling him to get Fabs in so does anyone think I should keep him?

      Which one this week?

      1) Odemwingie > Elmander & Konchesky to Elmo, or

      2) Elmander plus Gerrard to Fabregas.

I ask as I only have 3 defenders I can play this week (Shawx, Foley and Williamson) unless Konchesky and Alex make miraculous recoveries. I have a feeling 2 of my defenders will actually do well this week so I don't mind playing that lot but I do want Elmo at some point in the not too distant future.

Opinions? I jus tdon't know what to do. Alex injured but will be back and reliable points (and scoring maybe. Kolorov same and will be cheaper when back. Nani on otherhand everyone has, has good fixtures and MAY get big points each game (but my defence will be crap though Adam can rotate with Barton on other hand). I'm leaning towards 1) but Nani looks sooooooo tempting.

IMO Elmander edges, Carrol could be benched even.

What do you Guys think of the following… a 8 point hit to do…

      Gerrard –> Fabs
      Arteta –> Nani
      Etuhu –> Ferguson (Because I’m 0,1 short...)

      Leaving me with..

      Foster Gilks
      Alex Jara Shawx Perch Stam
      Malouda N’Zogbia Fabregas Nani Ferguson
      Carroll Tevez Drogba
      [Bank: 0.0]

      Tks all!

Jara and Perch are fine. If you're building a yellow card collection. 🙂

Anyone reckon Nasri or Arshavin could do something this weekend? If I want to get Fabs in I'd have to get rid of Malouda. I don't want to do that just yet.

just wondering what people would choose out of the follwing two dilemmas. have my own idea but want to see if you can convince me otherwise.

      1) arteta or barton to start?

      2) 2 defender picks from 4... o'shea/foley/elmohamady/givet

Need a Striker for 5.8 or less. Looking at Varney/Odemwingie/Carroll/Elmander, thoughts?

      Team is:

      Foster/Hart
      Faye/Jara/Williamson/Foley/Alcaraz
      Etuhu/Malouda/Nani/Ferguson/Fabregas
      Drogba/Tevez/5.8

      Thanks!

Quite ironic asking that on a post about how good Elmander is. When he costs exactly 5.8 !

      my one and only RMWCT

      Foster/Krul (Rotate superbly)
      OShea/Mummy/Dann/Coleman/Toure
      Cesc/Malouda/Nani/VdV/Nolan
      Odemwingie/Drogba/Elmander

      0.3 in bank.

Defence: I've looked ahead at the fixtures, I will eventually go Toure>Kolarov when fit. Newcastle have good fixtures, but don't want to double defensively (apart from maybe in W12/13 when I'm in the ****. Here I might go Dann>Enrique or something.

Midfield: I'm only really concerned about Nolan, the other four are set in stone to me.

Strikers: I'm happy- Odem injured but was going to be benched this week anyway, he should be back for FUL.

I did look at Arteta instead of Nolan, but then I'd have to chop the city defender.

Advice for my Sky Sports team?

Note that Bale is classed as a defender and so is OOP, only 2 max players from each team, no subs, and points are 3 for an assist, 4 for a goal for everyone (thus it's better to spend money in attack). No clean sheet points, but a negative for leaking goals

      Current team:

      Friedel
      Bale, Baines, James Collins, Evra
      Walcott, Milner, Arteta, Malouda
      Drogba, Caroll.

First thoughts are to get Walcott out (what was I thinking?) for maybe Nani? And perhaps replace Evra (not sure). I have 5 transfers available to use of 24 for the whole season.

      Thoughts on my team?

      Cole, Vidic, Richards (williamson, Crainey)

      Etherington, Nani, Essien, VDV (Walcott)

      Drogba, Berbatov, Elmander
Also will walcott be playing this week or not because Wenger reckons he may???
