Everton’s season finally got started with their win against Birmingham in Gameweek 7 but despite languishing in the relegation zone, defensively they have actually performed well. In terms of goals conceded they are sitting in fourth place behind Chelsea, Man City and Tottenham, and that is despite the three conceded against Man United at Goodison. With two clean sheets in their last two games and a reasonable run of fixtures ahead, we can now start to take a serious look at the various options in the Everton defence.

While Seamus Coleman offers a great differential option , the form and proven Fantasy potential of Leighton Baines looks too much to ignore; his nailed-on starting role and constant attacking threat has seen him shoot up to third place in our defenders Watchlist rankings this week.

The price tag is of course an issue; an FPL value of 6.8 is a lot of money to part with for an Everton defender, but at least you can be confident of getting a consistent performer, that will earn you points at both ends of the field.

In the 08/09 season Leighton Baines scored an incredible 105 points in the second half of the season, and was far and away the highest scoring defender across these 19 games. To put this into context, in the same period, Didier Drogba scored 60 points, and even Ronaldo only managed 109. Everton kept 11 clean sheets over this spell, and of course, the team’s defensive performance will play a big part in his eventual points tally, but it’s Baines’ individual attacking threat which makes him such a key Fantasy prospect.

Even without Steven Pienaar, the vast majority of Everton’s attacking play comes from the left, and Baines is constantly looking to get into advanced positions to cross the ball into the centre. The chalkboards below highlight just how central Baines is to Everton’s attacking play; taken from Everton’s last game against Birmingham, they compare the number of passes made by Baines and Coleman, who was playing on the right of midfield.

Members can delve further into their Opta stats which only go to provide further evidence of Baines’ performances this season. His stats for “Successful Crosses”, “Key Passes” and “Successful Passes in the Oppositions Half” in particular, illustrate his value to Everton’s attacking play. The comparison with Fantasy favourite Gareth Bale in terms of passing, crosses and touches, is also interesting and goes some way to show just how influential Baines has become.

Forthcoming fixtures are a bit of a mixed bag. A Merseyside derby is never easy, but with the recent turmoil and Liverpool’s poor form so far this season, David Moyes’ men will fancy their chances of taking all three points on Sunday. Torres looks to have recovered sufficiently to take part in this one while Jagielka looks likely to miss out, but a third clean sheet in a row is still a distinct possibility at home. A tricky game away to Tottenham follows, but after this fixtures lighten up considerably (STK blp BOL ARS sun WBA), making Baines a very solid mid-term investment leading up to the Christmas period.

Konchesky or ShawX for the next 4/5 GWs?

I need to get rid of one of them for Elmo this weekend... Konchesk's injury had made the decision for me but looks like he is fit now?

I was actually leaning towards keeping ShawX in the hope that he will be involved in a goal as he is long overdue a goal/assist. Neither player's fixtures are great though. Will wait & see!

Get rid of Shawcross, he has 3 away in the next 4 and they are rubbish away.

Liverpool could be on the verge of turning a corner if the ownership situation stablises and, if it doesn't defense will be the first issue Woy will tackle to get up the table. He did really well with Fulham with regards to their defensive solidarity.

Keep Konch, i transfered him out for Elmo and I wish I hadn't now, someone told me he was going to drop in value(which it says on FISO,but he was protected).

Nani or Berbatov for captian duty ?

    I have both....cannot call between them - time to flip a coin ? 🙂

Wisdom usually says go for attacking midfielder, as more points for goal / clean sheet bonus / Nani on form and may pick up bonus points too. However - Berbatov more likely to play 90 mins, certain to play (very minor doubt whether Nani will start, or at least play 90 mins - due to Champs League coming up ?) and Berbatov also on form and most likely of all United players to score...so VERY tough call.

I have both, and Scholes too - so either way I should come out well on this fixture. But - you always want to maximise the captain - so what do folk think ? Nani or Berbatov ?

I had a dream last night that Tevez got a hat trick in a huge city win... that might force me to captain him.

Anyway, I don't like Baines, far too over priced this season, I had him last season and he was a beast but would prefer similar price defenders in better teams.

I don't adovacte clubs moving anywhere!

Totally against the idea of movable franchises. If clubs are in financial difficulty then they have to downsize and cut their cloth accordingly. If that means relegation after relegation until things settle down, then so be it. Upping sticks to another city where crowds might be bigger should not be an option.

If Milton Keynes wanted a football team they should have started at the bottom, rather than acquiring a pre-existing team.

Nothing against Winkelman or MK fans personally, but the setting up of that club stinks.

Have already done Bale > Van der Vaart this week and I'm contemplating a further 2 transfers at a cost of 8 points.

The two transfers that I'm considering are Hart > Krul and K.Jones > Berbatov

The difference that it makes to my line-up for this week is...

    Hart (Foster)
    Enrique, Jones, Salcido, (Carr, Shawcross)
Nolan, Etherington, Nani, Arteta, Van Der Vaart
    Tevez, Drogba (K.Jones)

or the -8 point hit option...

    Krul (Foster)
    Shawcross, Jones, Salcido, (Carr, Enrique)
Nolan, Nani, Arteta, Van Der Vaart (Etherington)
    Tevez, Drogba, Berbatov

    Thoughts?

Nope - Berbatov out this week would be a really poor move.

So here's a scenario to thrash out...I've held onto Fabregas during his injury phase to avoid a points knock to get him back in...I haven't done too badly without him (not spectacular either)...with his absence this weekend and the City fixture next week, I am now toying with selling him for Nani and then buying him back for GW10 (like everyone else). That transfer may or may not cost me a hit.

So am I being too hasty in my quest for points this weekend or do I back my original idea and hope my bench tows the line for me...?

I could forfeit him as an option in my team and keep Nani and use the extra dosh to buy Tevez (?) and have them in my team for a while too...

    So...

    A) Stick
    B) Twist with him back in GW10
    C) Twist and buy Tevez (next week only though) for the foreseeable future

I am leaning towards A although B seems more tactically sound...

Similar dilema for me. I'd say keep him, as I see a number of possible weak links in your team, so I think you'll need the transfers.

In real football terms yeah maybe...in fantasy terms...not so much...I think he's equally as good as Malouda in FPL at the moment and have that transfer in the back of my mind...One thing I can't handle is watchin Utd play and praying they don't win or score...and it not being him or Berbatov that scores...last season it was Rooney...anyways...You choose A, B or C?

I would choose B, but I wouldn't then take nani out for him in gameweek 10, i'd find a way to have them both.

Yeah...I was toying doing Malouda to Nani with Fab...that would allow me to "upgrade" Bale and pick another hitter for Chamakh...hmmm...decisions...

              I'll be doing Malouda>Fab gw10

Odemwingie/Elmander/Carroll all look better options then Chamakh at present, although Chamakh could be on the score sheet finally this week. He just needs some crosses! His heading is brilliant but his finishing is pretty average

Totally agree...have my eye on Bent along with Elmander...got Carrol...not sure bout Odem yet..although he has been doing well...

Berbatov also an option if I free up the cash for that...

I was thinking or ousting Berba if he failed this week, putting in Elmander and using the cash to upgrade Malouda>Fabs. I have Cashley and Drogba so my Chelsea coverage should be enough to combat the loss of Malouda.

Bent can score against anyone, home or away, would be a good choice

Odem is the star of the show at West Brom and is very happy in his personal life after some unusual goings on in moscow!

Everyone (hopefully my rivals included) seems to be bringing Tevez in & i think now is the time he's gonna be put out on the side with possibly Adebayor down the middle. Berbatov is on form & possibly even a differential.
The logic of Drogba is clear. He's scored the most points out of all the players this season, has continued to be a solid captaincy choice throughout and IMO there's no other alternative.

What? Why? We (Blackburn) are absolute garbage on the road and we won there i think Citeh will too comfortably. The game is set up perfectly for them IMO, Blackpool will carry on attacking and Tevez & co will just pick them off all afternoon.

Can't see that at all. I'm actually thinking about captaining him as i think Blackpool will be perfect for Citeh to pick off. 1-3/1-4 i reckon

Nani should do well with maybe an assist or 2, Tevez 'possibly' a goal, Berba to get a brace & Drogba to get a brace with 3bps would be my prediction

    Hi Guys.

After seeing fab will be missing out I have decided to stick with bale for next couple of weeks. Therefore I'm starting with this..

    Robinson
    Hangeland Enrique Shawx
    Nani Malouda Adam (Player X)
    Berba TopDrog Carroll

Bench is obvious defender wise - Foster, Dann and Jara.

Player X is between S.Davies and Bale. Do I play Davies simply because of Hangeland? Or do I play Bale in the hope that if tottenham breach fulham he is involved. I really dislike cancelling out players but seems its the best option this week

No I mean since I'm chasing a Fulham clean sheet do I back that up with Fulham attack? As playing Bale would mean anything gained by him would be at Hangelands loss.
