Everton’s season finally got started with their win against Birmingham in Gameweek 7 but despite languishing in the relegation zone, defensively they have actually performed well. In terms of goals conceded they are sitting in fourth place behind Chelsea, Man City and Tottenham, and that is despite the three conceded against Man United at Goodison. With two clean sheets in their last two games and a reasonable run of fixtures ahead, we can now start to take a serious look at the various options in the Everton defence.

While Seamus Coleman offers a great differential option , the form and proven Fantasy potential of Leighton Baines looks too much to ignore; his nailed-on starting role and constant attacking threat has seen him shoot up to third place in our defenders Watchlist rankings this week.

The price tag is of course an issue; an FPL value of 6.8 is a lot of money to part with for an Everton defender, but at least you can be confident of getting a consistent performer, that will earn you points at both ends of the field.

In the 08/09 season Leighton Baines scored an incredible 105 points in the second half of the season, and was far and away the highest scoring defender across these 19 games. To put this into context, in the same period, Didier Drogba scored 60 points, and even Ronaldo only managed 109. Everton kept 11 clean sheets over this spell, and of course, the team’s defensive performance will play a big part in his eventual points tally, but it’s Baines’ individual attacking threat which makes him such a key Fantasy prospect.

Even without Steven Pienaar, the vast majority of Everton’s attacking play comes from the left, and Baines is constantly looking to get into advanced positions to cross the ball into the centre. The chalkboards below highlight just how central Baines is to Everton’s attacking play; taken from Everton’s last game against Birmingham, they compare the number of passes made by Baines and Coleman, who was playing on the right of midfield.

Members can delve further into their Opta stats which only go to provide further evidence of Baines’ performances this season. His stats for “Successful Crosses”, “Key Passes” and “Successful Passes in the Oppositions Half” in particular, illustrate his value to Everton’s attacking play. The comparison with Fantasy favourite Gareth Bale in terms of passing, crosses and touches, is also interesting and goes some way to show just how influential Baines has become.

Forthcoming fixtures are a bit of a mixed bag. A Merseyside derby is never easy, but with the recent turmoil and Liverpool’s poor form so far this season, David Moyes’ men will fancy their chances of taking all three points on Sunday. Torres looks to have recovered sufficiently to take part in this one while Jagielka looks likely to miss out, but a third clean sheet in a row is still a distinct possibility at home. A tricky game away to Tottenham follows, but after this fixtures lighten up considerably (STK blp BOL ARS sun WBA), making Baines a very solid mid-term investment leading up to the Christmas period.

88% of voters on the everton website seem to think everton will win, hardly biased?

Bale > Adam, Jermome (a punt that did NOT work out) > Berbs, and (c) Berbs instead of Nani in the hope that a few goals covers the point hit!?!?

    What yee think guys??

pretty much, sorry for sarrcy, but the man has been due for about a year now

he will pop in the occasional game and do something special

but no point relying him,hes unpredictable at best

saying that, it could be the risk you take is the one that pays off!

Actually he's fairly consistent. He won't get you huge scores but he seems to get between 5 and 7 pts most weeks, so you could probably do a lot worse.

Dude one has 3 home games in that spell the other has 3 tricky away games. Its obvious to me who's the better choice.

Clue: he's the cheaper of the two and plays his league games in Orange as opposed to his International ones.

Has anyone here ever read 'The Dice Man' by George Cockcroft?
It's basically a book about a guy who makes decisions and behaves according to the options he gives a dice. After the luck i've had so far this year in fantasy, i'm seriously thinking playing using the dice. It's a great book by the way..

Yep, I've read it and I like it. It's a very twisted but rather good book.

Luke Rhinehart is the name of the protagonist Boss Hogg, and the book is written as if it was written by him, so to speak.

You can also understand why he preferred not to put Cockcroft on the back of his book.

Yeah, it's definitely got a touch of rapeism going on. We tried to live according to the die for two days once and ended up naked but for shin-pads and a thong in a heavy-metal dive surrounded by bemused rockers. 'Tis a dangerous game.

I've used it for making decisions like choosing a take-away, or going to a match.

Never give the dice any options that involve nakedness, shin pads, or rape.

Thinking Larsson -> Fletcher or Bale -> Nani. I guess Nani would be the obvious one, but everyone has him. Whats Fletcher's impact in the attacking point of view?

Just in case anyone was wondering, the Pool case is still mental:

    Robinson (Foster)

Williamson O'Shea Elmo (Foley / Konchesky)

Malouda Dempsey Gerrard Nani (C) (Etuhu)

    Drogba Tevez Caroll

Any chances you would make for this week? (0 in the bank and Im more than likely getting Fabs in GW10 is hes fit)

Was all set for Gerrard -> Fabs. Should I now do Gerrard -> Nani and worry later how to get Fabs back for GW10?

I dunno rath, I was gonna do that but the guy who is always cock-on with the Liverpool lineups has Gerrard playing just off Torres. So I'm almost tempted to keep hold of Gerrard now.

Cheers mate, might be tempted to ship out Bale then and take a hit.

      Somewhere between 95 and 100%.

He was probably coming back anyway, but with Ben Arfa injured it's a certainty.

    RMT please for GW8 (WC)

    Krul (Foster)
    Mummy Alcaraz {DEFENDER} (Dann Jara)
    Malouda Nani Bale VDV (Adam)
    Drogba Berbatov Carroll

Now do I bring in a defender such as OShea/Vidic for the next 1-2 weeks only or play Dann or Jara this week?

I want to bring in Fabs GW10 so anyone that comes in for the next 2 weeks would have to make way (unless I swapped Malouda instead of Bale).

    Thoughts please?

Morning chaps, What are all you Gerrard owners doing, still making the Cesc trade, keeping him, getting someone else in?

Think I'm going to have to stick with him. I need to make 2 changes to get Fab in so was going to lose 4 points. I can either keep Gerrard or maybe change him to VDV or Nasri but that seems kind of pointless as I need to transfer them back out for Fabs in 2 weeks.

VDV is tempting because hes suspended for the CL. He'll get 90 mins in both fixtures, Fulham (A), Everton (H) i think he'll get some points in one of them. Going to stick with Gerrard though until GW10, getting sick of having money in the bank for Cesc though!

Hey, I'm getting the slowness now too. And it's definitely the adverts. It's contacting about half a dozen external sites, and it was getting stuck on questionmaster or something.

Wicked song. Ten was the first album I had on Minidisc, what a classic. Shame it didn't have rear view mirror on it. Love that song too.
