Everton’s season finally got started with their win against Birmingham in Gameweek 7 but despite languishing in the relegation zone, defensively they have actually performed well. In terms of goals conceded they are sitting in fourth place behind Chelsea, Man City and Tottenham, and that is despite the three conceded against Man United at Goodison. With two clean sheets in their last two games and a reasonable run of fixtures ahead, we can now start to take a serious look at the various options in the Everton defence.

While Seamus Coleman offers a great differential option , the form and proven Fantasy potential of Leighton Baines looks too much to ignore; his nailed-on starting role and constant attacking threat has seen him shoot up to third place in our defenders Watchlist rankings this week.

The price tag is of course an issue; an FPL value of 6.8 is a lot of money to part with for an Everton defender, but at least you can be confident of getting a consistent performer, that will earn you points at both ends of the field.

In the 08/09 season Leighton Baines scored an incredible 105 points in the second half of the season, and was far and away the highest scoring defender across these 19 games. To put this into context, in the same period, Didier Drogba scored 60 points, and even Ronaldo only managed 109. Everton kept 11 clean sheets over this spell, and of course, the team’s defensive performance will play a big part in his eventual points tally, but it’s Baines’ individual attacking threat which makes him such a key Fantasy prospect.

Even without Steven Pienaar, the vast majority of Everton’s attacking play comes from the left, and Baines is constantly looking to get into advanced positions to cross the ball into the centre. The chalkboards below highlight just how central Baines is to Everton’s attacking play; taken from Everton’s last game against Birmingham, they compare the number of passes made by Baines and Coleman, who was playing on the right of midfield.

Members can delve further into their Opta stats which only go to provide further evidence of Baines’ performances this season. His stats for “Successful Crosses”, “Key Passes” and “Successful Passes in the Oppositions Half” in particular, illustrate his value to Everton’s attacking play. The comparison with Fantasy favourite Gareth Bale in terms of passing, crosses and touches, is also interesting and goes some way to show just how influential Baines has become.

Forthcoming fixtures are a bit of a mixed bag. A Merseyside derby is never easy, but with the recent turmoil and Liverpool’s poor form so far this season, David Moyes’ men will fancy their chances of taking all three points on Sunday. Torres looks to have recovered sufficiently to take part in this one while Jagielka looks likely to miss out, but a third clean sheet in a row is still a distinct possibility at home. A tricky game away to Tottenham follows, but after this fixtures lighten up considerably (STK blp BOL ARS sun WBA), making Baines a very solid mid-term investment leading up to the Christmas period.

      1. Bolton Goalkeeper

      3. Bolton don't keep clean sheets

The rest is actually quite good, I don't know why you would want to change anything.

I suggest captaining Nani, Drogba or Tevez

Do I need Arsenal coverage until I get Fabs in - probably GW 10?

    Provisional WC team:

    Foster, Robinson
    Alcaraz, Samba, Jara, Salcido, Coleman
    Malouda, Nani, Adam, Barton, ???
    Drogba, Tevez, ???

    Options:
    A Nasri and Berbatov
B Arteta and Elmander (with points to spend elsewhere)
    C Other?

Yep I have VDV in already for the profit... could keep him another week.

        So I'll have:

        Foster, Robinson
        Alcaraz, Samba, Jara, Salcido, Coleman
        Malouda, Nani, Adam, Barton, VDV
        Drogba, Tevez, Berb

Then GW 9, Berb > Odem (or other)
        GW 10, VDV > Fabs

        Assuming all's well! Thoughts?

As we were walking home yesterday, there was this guy wearing some kind of military uniform. Tiny little guy he was, but he had on one of those hats that are totally flat on top. Made him look like a mushroom.

I said to Donna, "mark my words, that hat will be stolen before he's even out of our sight. And as the words had just left my mouth, some girls stopped him, took of his hat, and posed for a photo.

    Predicting the future is awesome.

Posted this last night on these boards (god knows how you link specific articles):

Looking at Everton, it appears they are turning things around from a poor start to the season. There are 3 guys who stand out in my opinion, being Baines, Cahill and Arteta.
Baines appeals as he is cheaper than the others by at least £1.5 million and with clean sheets, assists and the odd goal plus boni looks a decent shout for VFM.
Arteta is the darling of all bonuses and offers goals (from set pieces aswell),assists and the possibility of captaincy. Seems to be playing in a deeper role and once he finds form will be transferred in en-masse.
Cahill, plays in an advanced position and is more than capable of scoring goals and assisting but comes in dearest at £8.5 million.

Initially, my thoughts are with Baines as the £1.7 million can be spread around my team and I honestly believe he can amass over 150 points whilst Cahill will not be that much over (and is injury ridden) though Arteta is more than capable of 200 points. Any thoughts or feedback?????

My issue is not the 6.8m for Baines, it is that I want Everton cover and as the cheapest of the 3, whom may or may not finish the top points scorer over the season looks ever so tempting. Big Dunc's article kind of sways me further into going with Baines when there are so many good options for midfielders around the FPL game. Any furter feedback today???

Arteta is playing deeper and seems to only appear at the top of the pitch on some of their attacks.

Everton for me need 2 more weeks before I go for any of their players.

Not so sure though, if bale were away to chelsea and barton home to wigan then yeah it would be a no brainer but fulham away seems to me a decent fixture for bale. Should be a fairly open, attacking game and Bale's bound to be one of the best on the pitch.

I agree, it's just that for those 2 players, the only better GW for Barton is GW10 and possibly GW14 for most of the season.

If you cant choose Barton for this GW, you wont be choosing him for many others.

Basically, he doesn't rotate at all well with Bale if it's a choice between the 2.

My vision is clouded, my love for Wazza has driven me mental on a WC punt, tell me I am mad, tell me to go back to Drogba, WC team as it stands:

    Foster/Krul
    Simpson/Jara/O'Shea/Boateng/Elmo
    Nani/Malouda/Albrighton/N'Zogbia/Fabregas
    Elmander/Tevez/ROONEY

Tell me to put Drogba back in, it's the first time I have considered taking him out for a few weeks and take a punt on Rooney. Comments other than that the madness of Drogba OUT?

Fixtures aren't the be all and end all.... Sometimes I'm guilty of playing the fixtures too much, like picking Gerrard over Nani for a two week salvo, mainly because Gerrard had better fixtures.

Rooney may have better fixtures, but has absolutely no form and isn't even guaranteed to play after everything that's happened.... Drogba is on pens, free kicks and is on unstoppable form.

      Madness!

i kind of know its stupid, but i'm just drawn to shrek.

never before has he been a differential pick, and he has 3 home games in 4 coming up. if he is gonna rediscover his form, surely, it has got to be in these upcoming 4 games.

see my post above. Way I look at it is I am on WC, I think Tevez will do well this weekend, but I also think Rooney as every chance to, if Rooney fails, Drogba back in next week, I will have lost money true, but if Rooney hits form soon, I may go without Drogba and keep rooney and Malouda as Chelsea cover

Could very well pay off but you have to consider the price difference. Even if Rooney does outscore berba it would have to be by a lot to justify not spending the 2 mill odd elsewhere. Surely there will be more points to be had by having berbatov and investing in someone else.

      b) Adam IN, AJ OUT (and Arshavin for Nani next week)

If you're concerned about him from a Chelsea point of view, it's not like you've never won games without him.

And if you're concerned on a personal level, I'm sure he'll be fine. Lucozade and soup.

nice, so next week perhaps. I can deal with that I suppose.

Or... I could switch him out for Tevez on my Sky team and possibly snag a big lead over my rivals...

How much does history matter in football?
I keep thinking about this lately, especially as the turmoil surrounding Liverpool means that at least five times a day we hear the refrain "to regain their place in world football" or other such references to the history of Liverpool FC. Now granted it is a history to be proud of, 18 league titles, 7 FA cups, 7 League Cups, 5 European cups, 3 UEFA cups. However as we all know and regularly delight in informing our nostalgic Koppite friends; their last league title was in 1989-90. Whilst the First Division regularly was 'owned' [as the yoof say] by Liverpool, the Premier League has very much belonged to Manchester United and to a lesser degree, Chelsea.
    So a club with a fantastic history - does that mean anything today other than bragging rights and a pensioner like harking back to the good old days? Well in some ways it does matter; when Fernando Torres - a player that even the most ardent anti-Liverpool fan can call a good player - joined Liverpool he said;
"The Liverpool offer arrived and I told the club to listen to that offer as that is the team I wanted to play for, it's one of the best, if not the best, club in Europe."
Now obviously he was referring to the history of Liverpool, not the contemporary side he joined. Yes they had won an incredible Champions league final in 2005 but that appeared as the aberration rather than the norm.
The historical focus is not just limited to Liverpool, Manchester United are SmugMaster Generals in informing us of their clubs history - particularly the recent history. As Eric Cantona once said "when I think football, I think Manchester United".
However the counterparts to this nostalgic view of football are Chelsea, the so called novus homo of the title challenge. Backed by large amounts of money by Roman Abramovich they are generally viewed with disdain by Manchester United and Liverpool fans who discount their history, believing that their success is solely down to money. In a similar fashion to how Blackburn were viewed when they won the title in 1995/96. Does this perceived lack of history matter? In modern football - no not really, not in my opinion. At no time did it stop top players joining either Blackburn or later Chelsea and Manchester City, money very much talks. However I can see that the near extinct species of a 'honourable player' (such as Lionel Messi) could be more willing to join a club with a prestigious history - however they will still demand a fortune for their services.
When you get agents so heavily involved in football all the history in the world is worth nothing. Money money money is all that matters. Liverpool FC are not, and will not be owned by the National Trust, they are not covered by the World Wildlife Fund - they are a business, a business that is currently in trouble. Plenty of historical businesses have gone bust in recent times - now I really do NOT want that to happen to Liverpool but I do wish that they would stop using their past as a weapon.
    End of rambling rant.

Exactly. I hate it when people bring up results from more than about a season or two ago. It rarely has any bearing on anything.

It doesn't have any bearing on anything that is currently happening or the immediate future.. But it has a bearing on how we perceive a club.

Even though i am a united fan i certainly see liverpool as a more prestigious club than chelsea or sheikh's city..

i think this rant warrants a reply.

having grown up with 80% of the kids around becoming LFC fans on the back of the 1989/90 title, i have heard these kind of complaints for the last 20 years (as well as given ridiculous amounts of stickers just to get steve nicholl (sp?) to complete the LFC panini page). history have given them confidence, big mouths and something to be proud of.

but that's it really. Rafa have given us awful cowardly football, and I have shun LFC games for the last 5 seasons, because they have been so boring!!

Only non-league club to win the FA Cup
First English club to win a European Cup
First ever club to win the UEFA Cup (well done Wolves)
First English club to win the double

of course history matters, but what matters most is your last game and that a club is playing entertaining football. not many can truly say that in the premiership.

The quality of football is a good point, Im sure some players are more inclined to join the likes of Arsenal to be a part of their way of football. Better to win beautiful than to win ugly.
