Gareth Bale has just minutes ago sealed a superb Champions League hat-trick against the current holders in the San Siro. In doing so the Welshman added another chunk of millions to his value as his burgeoning reputation grew on the European stage. For Fantasy Managers, most notably the thousands that recently shifted Bale from their squad, the hat-trick in the 4-3 defeat for Spurs offered a chilling reminder of his explosive abilities.

The goals mean nothing of course, not least to the outcome of the match. There will also be no rewards for Bale owners this evening. There’s little doubt however, that those who kept the faith with the Welshman will be feeling rather cozy at the prospect of Bale translating that display on a domestic stage.

Bale’s returns have been disappointing of late; the belated reward of the assist for Tom Huddlestone’s goal was his first points for six matches. With Rafael Van der Vaart flourishing alongside him for just a million or so more, it’s little wonder that we’ve seen significant sales. Almost 100,000 managers have got rid since Gameweek 7; they will be fidgeting rather uncomfortably after tonight’s display.

A testing match-up with Everton beckons at the Lane this weekend and tonight’s showing will surely have removed any threat of Bale being rested or indeed shifted to left-back. Having torn apart one of Europe’s best defences, there’s surely no way we will see Bale at full-back in the immediate future. That’s got to be good news for Fantasy Managers or at least those who have resolved the Bale vs Van der Vaart issue in their heads.

There will doubtless be more on that little puzzle to come on these pages, for now we may have just seen the first FPL bandwagon prompted by a European tie.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      Good team, and you've got your subs right I think. Question is, who are you gonna bench each week out of Parker and Piquionne? If I were you I would downgrade Piquionne to Varney or DJ Campbell, otherwise you will have wasted points on the bench.

      On current form you could probably squeeze it down to 35.

      Unless you're Arsene Wenger, when you'd settle for no more than £8.5mil plus Armand Traore on loan and expect United to be happy with what they're getting.

    No, no. It's no fun if you don't play by the rules, that way I can't mock everyone who was too far up Rooney's arse a few months ago after his "world class" displays against the might Hull City and the gargantuan Portsmouth.

    Nice to see Vela's apprentice now has the impossible task of hitting such heights of overratedness.

        My favourite piece of analysis of all time:

        Excluding two penalties (both of which were after despicable dives anyway, Rooney vs Arsenal and Valencia vs Liverpool), Rooney's stats against last season's top 8 were as follows:

        11 games, 3 goals, 0 assists.

        This from a guy who was often playing up front alone in these games, for the reigning champions. Drogba and Fabregas had much better stats than the ones above.

        I guess I missed the time when 'world class' was re-defined as battering Portsmouth and Hull and winning the Carling Cup.

                To be fair to little Cesc (who also got accused of not pulling his finger out in the big games on here today), he did set up the winner in the World Cup final. Which is quite a lot more than Wayne Rooney did, and it's quite a big game.

              Rooney is a very good player, and was very good at times last season.. I guess it just depends on what your definition of 'world class' is. And Rooney isn't IMO.

                    exactly what i meant. dorgba scored better goals. i know a goal is a goal but from a neutral viewers point of view (which is what i am) drogba scored much better goals last season. the rooney affection is incredible, until you realise it, take a step back and watch how hynoptised others are by him you don't realise it. i had rooney-itis too all the way from euro 2004 until about a year or so ago when i thought, 'wait a second, is this guy actually that good?' i came to the conclusion that he is but english people generally have this odd connection with him where they think he is absolutely incredible. i don't know if it's his style of play, his just an average guy appearance, or him being our only striekr now owen has petered out but honestly just stand back and assess people's love of rooney. it goes far beyond his ability and as a result weirdly leads to a sub-conscious over hyping of his ability.

                    I actually agree with the fact that people put Rooney up on a pedestal, to be honest i think that has come crashing down now but especially so just before the world cup - in much the same way Heskey suffered from the polar opposite.

                    Doesn't change my opinion though - it's a bit like the old 'just because i'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not after me'

                    i didn't bother getting invovled in the 'world class' arguement as that's just down to each individuals interpretation of the word. incidiently i do think rooney is world class, BUT also think he is over-rated by english supporters/media/pundit/people in general. i also don;t think rooney suddenly became a better player last season, he simply changed position and shock horror good player in more attacking position scores more goals. over and out

                i'll chose to trust the fifa makers 😀 when you listen to the reception rooney gets at wembley compared to the rest of the team when the team is being read out it is clear what a hugely odd affection people have for him and the sub-conscious over-hyping of his ability that goes with this

            Would he even get in the Chelsea side?!

            Way I see it, is that there is no point changing formation to accommodate him, and Drogba should play down the middle no matter what, he's better than Rooney.

            Cole and Malouda work superbly together down the left, so you wouldn't want to break that partnership up.... I guess Rooney could play on the right, instead of Anelka. But Nico does a superb job of linking the midfield and attack, a role that I don't think Rooney would be as good at.

            Much like with all the Torres chat in preseason, the only situation in which I'd desperately want for him to sign for Chelsea, is if Drogba was no longer there. So I guess when the Drog moves on I'd love to have Rooney at Chelsea, but until then no thanks.

              So he'll go to your biggest rivals instead, not exactly ideal for Chelsea either if he ends up at Citeh in January?

              As for Rooney not being able to fulfil Anelka's role, i'd be surprised if Anelka is superior to Rooney at anything (to do with football anyway!).

              12th February is the date to look forward to now, next time you'll see Wayne playing at OT?

                I'm not even sure Chelsea could match his wage demands. Just dont think he's ready for London life or any life outside of the north west. The deal is done with Citeh, just United have to agree to it now. You thought the Sol Campbell to Arsenal was big, the fallout from this this will make that look like a playground game of conkers.

          I'm not sure what you think that shows?

          You can find statistics to justify almost any kind of viewpoint, no matter how ridiculous.

          I'm not going to point to any facts or figures, most people that saw him play last season would agree he was mind-blowingly good - you could see the impact he had. I guess i missed the point when being world class boiled down to a few numbers and figures - but so we're clear i would say Drogba and Fabregas are also world class.

          I hope it's with a hint of irony you talk about the despicable diving, but regardless it's pretty clear you're incapable of being impartial on matters such as these.

            Being impartial is boring. 😀

            To be world class you surely have to excel against the best teams? In the league and in the world.... Rooney's scoring record against Chelsea gives a pretty clear indication of how effective he is against the best teams in the world.

            In finals the only goal he's ever scored is against Wigan in the Mickey Mouse Cup...

            He's also only scored two goals against Liverpool - Utd's biggest domestic game every season - one was a rebound from a penalty, the other a Dudek mistake.

            He's only ever scored one goal past the quarter finals in the Champions League.

                  I know it sounds weird, but what I'm trying to say is that he became too emotionally invested when playing against liverpool, and that it affected his performances...

                    Yes, and as a result has strong feelings, but very few thoughts...

                    It's a complex way of saying that rooney wanted to kick the shit out of liverpool players during the derbies and as a result he didn't score as many goals...

              As i'm trying to point out, that doesn't paint the whole picture.

              When i say 'world class' i'm not talking about the amount of goals he scored or who they were against, i'm talking about his performances - he was phenomenal last season and i'm not going to sit here and pick apart your figures to try and illustrate that point.

              My view is based on watching him play, not statistics.

                  Jesus christ - this is like getting blood out of a stone. Are you all on a wind-up or something? It's common sense that a player can have a great game despite not finding the net.

                  What i'm saying is that goals aren't a requisite for a world class performance, and as such, pointing out games where a player hasn't scored is showing nothing.

All you talk about is goals goals goals, but we all know Rooney was considered world class even before he became a goalscorer last season. Rooney is/was so much more than a goalscoring machine.

      Christ Faulkner, you really are talking rubbish.

      Rooney was world class last season, especially when he was tearing you lot a new arse(nal) hole at the emirates. We've been through this. Just because your precious bum golden boy didn't win any team or personal medals you got a bee in your bonnet, which you now feel vindicated to set free because wayne is a greedy little swine. Greedy or not, he's still a world class footballer. So that's your answer, goodbye.

          Arshavin is widely thought of as a player that "plays for himself". If you think thats the best 11 to field, fait play to you.

          Collectively your defence is a gash. Any thoughts about changers there?

            Not really for the next few weeks, once I get Fabs in next week I will have £0 left, but a formidable front 8. My defenders rotate reasonably well, as do my goalkeepers, although if Konch doesnt keep a CS this week i may be forced into changing him.

            Will probably look to downgrade one midfielder in favour of 1 or 2 defenders between GWKS 12-15.

    Hi – I posted this earlier and got very different views – please let me have any thoughts as I have a really itchy WC finger

    Am thinking of playing WC to get this team

    Robinson /Al-Habsi
    Bosingwa/Coleman/Elmohamady/Jara/Simpson
    Fabregas/Van der Vaart/Nani/N’Zogbia/Albrighton
    Drogba/Berbatov/Tevez

    My main issue in fact is whether it’s sensible to WC now or hold on (my current team is linked and is not too bad at mo although plenty I’d like to do). If I wait, I suspect I’ll never be able to afford the proposed WC team given price rises etc

    Do you think it’s worth:

    1. doing WC now
    2. holding on to WC

    Any thoughts gratefully received as all of a sudden it seems like a really big decision (it's my first season on this and afraid of ocking it up!)

    Gotta laugh at this nonsense that Wayne Rooney isn't world class, and Didier Drogba is lightyears ahead of him.

    Just remember this...

    Wayne Rooney's Honours by the age of 24:

    * Premier League (3): 2006–07, 2007–08, 2008–09
    * League Cup (2): 2005–06, 2009–10
    * FA Community Shield (2): 2007, 2010
    * UEFA Champions League (1): 2007–08
    * FIFA Club World Cup (1): 2008

    Didier Drogba's Honours by the age of 24:

    *

      Now I'm pretty much neutral in this whole thing but that comparison hardly seems fair. Rooney had the massive advantage of going through a quality youth system in England, Drogba did not.

        I'm not using this to "prove" that Rooney is better than Drogba (as the opposite has apparently been done above), just highlighting that Drogba is a the very peak of his career and Rooney is still developing, and what he has achieved so far is incredible.

        I think people forget he is so young just because Messi and Ronaldo are phenomenons at such a young age.

          'apparently' Pfft. 😀

          And I wasn't trying to 'prove' that Drogba is better than Rooney anyway. All I was doing was pointing out what Rooney's stats (yes stats, get over them) were against the best in the league, and was using Drogba as a means of comparision - Drogba clearly being a world class player).

          And Rooney came up woefully short... Does that mean he's not a world class player? I guess not, and that ultimately it comes down to personal opinions and interpretations of the term 'world class'.

            Watching Wayne Rooney last season was brilliant, he absolutely carried that team. Goal stats only show a fraction of the picture. World class.

            And if we're taking goals off people, you can take Drogba's at Old Trafford away. Miles offside.

      drogba v rooney last season was the only arguement. rooney is clearly the better prospect, but statistically drogba was the better player last season. at 18 rooney was tearing up euro 2004, at 18 drogba was playing amateur football deciding whether he even wanted to be a footballer
