Gareth Bale has just minutes ago sealed a superb Champions League hat-trick against the current holders in the San Siro. In doing so the Welshman added another chunk of millions to his value as his burgeoning reputation grew on the European stage. For Fantasy Managers, most notably the thousands that recently shifted Bale from their squad, the hat-trick in the 4-3 defeat for Spurs offered a chilling reminder of his explosive abilities.

The goals mean nothing of course, not least to the outcome of the match. There will also be no rewards for Bale owners this evening. There’s little doubt however, that those who kept the faith with the Welshman will be feeling rather cozy at the prospect of Bale translating that display on a domestic stage.

Bale’s returns have been disappointing of late; the belated reward of the assist for Tom Huddlestone’s goal was his first points for six matches. With Rafael Van der Vaart flourishing alongside him for just a million or so more, it’s little wonder that we’ve seen significant sales. Almost 100,000 managers have got rid since Gameweek 7; they will be fidgeting rather uncomfortably after tonight’s display.

A testing match-up with Everton beckons at the Lane this weekend and tonight’s showing will surely have removed any threat of Bale being rested or indeed shifted to left-back. Having torn apart one of Europe’s best defences, there’s surely no way we will see Bale at full-back in the immediate future. That’s got to be good news for Fantasy Managers or at least those who have resolved the Bale vs Van der Vaart issue in their heads.

There will doubtless be more on that little puzzle to come on these pages, for now we may have just seen the first FPL bandwagon prompted by a European tie.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

goodness. I logged on and saw spurs down 0-4 earlier, and just didnt bother checking up. Now i log on to Scout and see an article on the infamous Garreth Bale. Just when I was set to cut him next week, as I own VDV and want Adam or someone else, Bale turns a trick?!?!?!?! What do I do with this guy? Surely if VDV was on the pitch, Bale doesnt have the same kind of opportunities. Were these goals off set pieces? Is it possible to get good returns owning bale and vdv?

Maybe we're underestimating Rooney. Maybe he's looked into his crystal ball, seen NO trophies for United in the next five years and didn't want to be part of that?

Sorry what? Becoming first choice left back?

If it wasn't abudantly clear that Bale is going to on the wing already, then it sure as hell is now.

For me, I didn't get rid of Bale because of the possibility of him playing left back, not at all. It was purely because fixtures stiffen up, and he'd done f*ck all in the five weeks I had him for.

I wish people would stop guessing and creating doubt. Last week Tevez was going to be rested, this week its malouda. There is no way Bale is going to go to left back, he'll only play there if Spurs are losing and need to bring on an extra attacker. For now, he is a left Winger, tonight proved that

Actually, his chalkboards probably don't rock. They don't blow though. I've kind of given up too. My brother-in-law, whose team is utterly shite, is only about 10 points behind me. I was ahead of him by about 100 points last season at this stage.

Basically, this year, Drog+Tevez +1 other Chelsea gets a rubbish team a decent score. Last year at this stage, you had Rooney, Torres, Drogba and Van Persie to choose from. The possibilities were greater.

If only those Bale points would translate into the FPL then I'd be happy.

Knowing "Arry though, he'll continue playing Bale at LB and VdV will continue to hog the points. Still, this is most agreeable news to those of us who still have kept the faith with Bale.

Potential is still there and, if the luck he was enjoying at the latter half of last season returns to him (and jumps off Van der Vaart's back) then there could be some serious and most welcome pointage coming the way of us Bale owners.

For some reason Bale insists on only doing the biz in international/CL games. It's getting slightly freaky now, almost as though he's top of his FF league and has VDV in his team and not himself.

VdV isn't available for CL games at the moment, which is probably why Bale scores so well.

Van der Vaart seems to take points off Bale when they play together.

That said, Bale has been playing great for Spurs but just has not had the breaks go his way lately. He still takes corners and crosses the ball so the assists will come for him.

I don't think VdV affects Bale significantly in points really. I see Bale being all in the action, but his passes are not made value of - and in the box he is just slightly unlucky not to get that last pass or get LOS on target.

It is frustrating to not get points though, but given his performances, he is hot as ever.

ok ppl lets not be narrow minded thinking malouda is subject to rotation, theres only 3 more cl matches until march so its not an issue..my question is does he represent good value for money.i think all the chelsea players(drogs inculded) are overpriced. i dont see teams losing by such good margins.the reason chelsea beat west brom and blackpool so comprehensively was because it was at the start of the season and had the fitter team due to the world cup

None of the expensive players are exactly value for money in real terms, hence why when you look at the 'Value (Season)' drop down menu on the transfer page it's always the cheapies that are top, and there are no expensive players in sight.

But... You have to spend your 100 million somewhere, and you need players that you can captain without having to worry about them. In that sense Drogba is priceless.

I saw the whole thing unwind. Some seriously nasty stuff was levelled at RBJ. It was the only time I've winced looking at this site since Davygate.

Davygate was when some joker called davysteen (he still posts from time to time) started giving out all this racist chat... Saying how he was pleased that other than Glen Johnson, Liverpool had no black players.

Needless to say he got absolutely slaughtered for it.. He stood by his comment all throughout as well..

This seems a good moment to ask. Was Lampard ever fat? It's the oddest piece of abuse I see regularly about any player, but maybe I wasn't paying attention one summer in the 90s when he came back from his holidays with a beer belly.

              Can I say Carvalho?!

And what are we talking about here? I guess the best partner for Vidic is Ferdinand, well, a fully fit Ferdinand... Possibly Kompany as well.. Although I do think that Alex is a better CB than Kompany, just not suited to play with Vidic.

              Cech
              Ivanovic Vidic Ferdinand Cole
              Nani Essien Fabregas Malouda

Is it still fashionable to criticise Cech? I thought that people were over that....

The league is seriously lacking in quality right backs though... Chelsea probably have the best two, and they are both far from perfect.

a bit off topic but i was thinking how much more remarkable rvp is considering he never gets a long run of games. drogba showed in 08/09 and rooney in the last 6 months that they are a shadow of the player they normally are when battling nagging injuries. imagine rvp never had all these set backs

Despite being part of a really dodgy Arsenal backline, Vermaelen is a great defender. Perfect foil for Vidic.

Right back is still the worst player on the pitch, unless you're Maicon. You could stick Gary Neville there for all I care.

vermaelen is overrtaed imo. he was fortunate enough to score some goals when he first arrived in the premiership, cue the inevitable he's a good defender that follows.
it's a shame that if he defended in exactly the same way but didn't score those goals he would be thought of completely differently by the media.
i think he's almost a very good defender but still showed way too many examples of kamikaze positioning last season. give him a couple of years, the raw materials are there.

Joleon Lescott syndrome at it's best here.

Zonal Marking illustrated how he was at fault for quite a few goals in important matches for Arsenal last season. Certainly the two that Ibra scored, when Verm got sucked in far too far up the pitch trying to get close to Messi.

West Ham at home aswell but in fairness Song was his defensive partner against Barca, he was probably trying to take more responsibility and mark everyone

Joleon Lescott syndrome? I like that.

Still, Vermaelen massively improved Arsenal's back-line last season, goals or no goals, and while he has his faults, he's lightening quick, cleans up a lot more of his teammates' shoddy defending, and is probably the best ball-playing centre half in the league (which is mighty important, at least for an Arsenal player).

yeah he is definitely quick. that's why i like vermaelen he's a lefty and is a very good 'footballer' for a centre back.

love gomes, since his blunder when he first arrived he's been as good as any keeper. more match winning saves than anyone imo (yes he has to make more than chelsea for example given tottenham's inferior defending)

as good as rooney was last season we still lost the league being over reliant on him

with him out nani and berbatov are becoming more prominant
