A routine night for both Chelsea and Arsenal, with Carlo Ancelotti’s side not quite producing “fantastic” on plastic but doing more than enough to repel and kill off their hosts in Moscow. The Gunners meanwhile fielded Cesc Fabregas and duly raised their game in a “score at will” 5-1 mauling of Shakhtar Donetsk at the Emirates.

Chelsea’s victory over Spartak saw Yuri Zhirkov flourish on home soil with a superb strike to set them on their way; Nicolas Anelka provided the finish for the second and Chelsea’s defence, with Petr Cech prominent did the rest.

Ancelotti’s lineup was strong and included both Ashley Cole and Michael Essien; both had been doubts going into the game and the Chelsea boss confirmed following teh game that the pair had both come out unscathed from their run-outs on the plastic pitch. Zhirkov came into the midfield for ankle victim Ramires, while Salomon Kalou made a return from injury to replace Gael Kakuta as part of a front three with Anelka and Florent Malouda.

Knocks and scrapes could emerge before Saturday’s encounter with Wolves and, while we’re still waiting on confirmed news on the situation with Alex, Ancelotti did confirm that Didier Drogba as in the frame for a return to action following the illness that kept him out against Moscow and Villa.

“I think that we had good news from Cobham today and he will be able to play the next game against Wolves.”

Going forward, Chelsea’s position in their group is now strong but Ancelotti hinted that they will not take the return with Spartak lightly as Chelsea go all out to top the group. That return tie is played on November 3, four days after Chelsea go to Blackburn.

“We have to stay focused for the next game, we want to arrive in first place, this is our aim and we have the possibility to do this, but we don’t have to give rest to other players, the Champions League is important for all the games…We’re not giving up on the match in London, we’ll go there to try and play well and get points.”

In truth it’s difficult to see Ancelotti resting players for the tricky Ewood tie ahead of the clash with Spartak, so last night’s result looks to be a decent outcome for owners of Malouda, Cole, Essien and Drogba.

Over at the Emirates Arsenal simply breezed past Shakhtar Donetsk, routing them 5-1 with skipper Cesc Fabregas returning to orchestrate matters. His inclusion in the side was the big headline for Fantasy Managers and his 63 minutes last night surely made him a certainty for the teamsheet at Eastlands this weekend, while the performance gave assurance of his likely impact now he’s back in an Arsenal shirt. Fantasy Managers will now be looking at their squads and searching for a route to recruit the Arsenal playmaker.

Fabreas took up his usual midfield role and saw that Abou Diaby dropped to the bench with Thomas Rosicky coming into the side on the right and Samir Nasri switching to the left, ousting Andrei Arshavin.

That move by Arsene Wenger has to ring alarm bells for Fantasy Managers and emphasises that suddenly, options in the Arsenal squad are plentiful. Theo Walcott also made a return last night from the bench and his name has to be added to a midfield mix that has Nasri, Arshavin, Diaby all under threat.

Jack Wilshere’s domestic three-match ban for his red received against Birmingham clears the clutter for the time being, but while he continued to impress with a smartly taken goal last night, he will add to the options further on his return in Gameweek 11. Owners of Arsenal’s midfield assets will surely be looking to make the upgrade to the untouchable Fabregas then, or chance a period where rest and rotation is a constant threat.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Are you sure Malouda is to start on Saturday? Wait to see what the Ance-lottery pulls out on Friday I guess. If so then would favour that.

I like the Toure > Boateng option and may well do that for myself - thanks for the inspiration. Only problem is are you sure Boateng will start - see who plays for City on Thursday as appears both him and Richards will be available.

My one concern for you (which is same as one I have for myself) would be that you need to ensure of 3 definate starters aside from Foley as there is a good likelyhood Foley will be getting minus points from a Stamford Bridge hiding this weekend.

Am I the only one whose reason for not getting Drogba has nothing to do with funds or injuries, but is simply a consequence of me being fan of another team (in this case ManUtd), and couldn't possibly stand the situation of feeling that liiiiittle consolation when Drogba tears apart defences? I want to wholeheartedly love it when he completely fails.

I am most likely getting rid of Malouda this week, as that's annoying too, although I am not remotely as afraid of him.

Prob going Malouda -> VDV, and Arshavin-> Fabs week after. Leaving Bale on the bench I guess.

        +1

Especially as you are a United fan as in years to come you are going to have a lot of resenting to do (that debt is going to rip you apart and unlike Hicks and Gillet, the Glazer boys have firmly entrenched themselves by putting the debt into bonds - there is going to be no bank with the power to push them out when things start turning nasty. As a liverpool fan (who takes no joy in the predicament that awaits united - can't stand greedy leveraged buy outs sucking money frm the fans pockets) I would currently only be able to choose Wolves players.

Firstly, I think there is room for emotion, as you could probably do well steering clear of at least one good team. Maybe apart from Chelski (which is coincidentally the team from which I have realised I can _never_ have a keeper or defender; hoping for a clean sheet feels absurd; getting one doing little as consolation).

Imagine how many people are actually giving up on the best part of the PL thinking that their FF cynisism is going to take them to the top 5000.

        Not for me!

wask yourself this... ould you put in a sunderland winger who is a guaranteed starter and puts in a lot of crosses and costs only 4.8 and gets amongst the bonus points?

If the answer is yes or maybe... then surely having the bonus of an extra 3 points on top everytime Sunderland get a clean sheet makes the case even more compelling

          Yes.

He is in the essential bracket for me. One of three.

          He's a winger and he costs 4.8!

That's like getting Gutierrez with clean sheets. Then there's the fact that Sunderland play with Gyan and Bent. He'll get assists. He might not have any now, but opta stats are all over the number of crosses he puts in, and he gets into aggressive forward positions. He had two goalscoring chances this weekend.

Unless he gets injured, he's in my team regardless of fixtures.

I circumstances where I see myself shipping Malouda sooner, rather than later, what do people think of a 4 point hit this week to do the following (on the basis of Ancelotti announcing his team on Friday and Drogba stating and Malouda being benched or rested):

    Rooney OUT Drogba IN
    Malouda OUT Fabregas IN

    To give team of:

    Foster
    Elmo/Jara/Boateng
    Nani/Fabregas/Adam/VDV
    Elmander/Tevez/Drogba(C)

    Krul/O'Shea/Albrighton/Simpson

I still think Malouda will score well over the next say 5 weeks.

I think Malouda came off with 10 minutes to go, with Ancelotti knowing he'll be playing this weekend. Otherwise the only reason he'd have taken him off would be because he was injured or for a huge round of applause due to a MOM performance....

I can't see it being either of those 2, so preparation for the weekend seems more likely.

Kalou and Drog are 99% certain to start this week. So I see it as a battle between Flo and Anelka for the other spot. Malouda being subbed was quite promising but he also played 2 games for France that Anelka didn't. Tough one.

Yep, Drog is a definite Si.

Saw Duel for the first time about 3 years ago, got it on special edition in that lovely little steel case. 4.5 in full agreement, not perfect, but nearly, you can see where Jaws came from! Mechanical beast relentlessly pursuing the prey, loved it, classic Spielberg.

Saw The Town on friday: 2.5 stars, very disappointing, was a mess, terrible editing, poor screenplay, generally poorly executed. I loved Gone Baby Gone, and Affleck basically tried to create the same kindof "I love Boston" film again, and it just doesn't work. Affleck himself is excellent in it, and Jeremy Renner is fast becoming one of the most exciting character actors out there.

I was saying just the same about the similarities between Duel and Jaws. Even the finale! Spielberg captures the tense atmosphere perfectly...incredible camera angles on every scene help create this. Very haunting. Amazing when you consider how simple the premise is. Very hard trying to sell this film to someone!

Only seen Renner once but clearly he was a bit special!

The Social Network trailer also kicks ass, "I think I am entiteld to an apology" "I beg your pardon?" "thanks"

Ahhh, such a long thread just skim read. Did not realise it was a decision based upon theoretical conjuncture. Always worth starting with the exception to your argument to avoid lots of answers to the wrong question, i.e:

If Malouda is confirmed as rested this weekend, should i do the following.......

My answer to that would still be no though. Wait to see if Fabs gets through a session with De Jong before bringing in. If kalou is confirmed as starter for the week then Malouda > Kalou instead (likely to get more than any of your subs plus the four point hit.).

      Nope.

I still think he has potential. I know he's smothered in controversy, but he's still 6"4, and a very good player on his day.

Newcastle need someone like him in their team. They also have great fixtures until GW14, and I would be loathe to get rid of him when he's playing Sunderland (H).

I'm not just stubbornly keeping him there. I just think there are more important areas I have to work on. If he doesn't play this weekend, I might consider getting him out.

Man Utd fans... will O'Shea start against Bursaspor tonight? I checked redcafe and most fan lineups seem to have him on the bench.

Gah my choice is Bougherra (H against Valencia) or O'Shea (H against Bursaspor). Rangers more likely to concede, but Bougherra more likely to get 90 mins. Help me decide please! 🙂

If Dempsey is Oop upfront then i will play him. Can anyone clarify this? I have a feeling it will be Dembele and Kamara, sadly. Carroll playing west ham you would fancy him but with all this court saga who knows how hughton will employ him. Adam, will probably keep Blackpool up this season frankly, but don't think they will get anything from the match against Brum.

Wait and see who starts tonight and how they do (obviously), I for one think the second striker spot will be rotated between Hernandez/Macheda and Owen, so I don't see a whole lot of value in the little pea for the time being. The likes of Elmander/Odemwingie/Carroll/Obinna etc are much better value and play week in, week out. I wouldn't bother if I were you as long as you have Nani.

You may have found s loophole in the usual convention of don't take a hit for a defender. If Foley is your only fit option for your third defender then benching him for Boswinga could easily be worth 4 points. If Bos is a confirmed starter then 5 points looks a conservative estimate for him in that game (CS and a booking) and Foley will be lucky to escape with a point to his name. Offensively I can't see Wolves getting anything (though slight caveat is they could stick Hunt on to spook Cech into an error).

Undoubtably Rooney has to play from the left now, providing a creative spark. it's where he was happiest, grafting for the team and letting others take the plaudits. that's where Fergie went wrong. Signing a world class Forward last summer would've curtailed his current discontent.

Glazers are gonna get a battering if they don't spend all the money on re-enforcing. Interesting times.

How many times has rooney done his ankle now??

Could the antics of last March have left him with a serious ongoing issue with his ankle - has anyone seen him make a tackle since then???? (he bottles it every time!!) With question marks over his future fitness (perhaps al la Hargreaves) could United even offer him the big lifetime contract he was asking for only six months ago?

Boss, I think most on here is looking at Coleman. Even at Def he is good value if he keeps on starting.

If you bring him in, i assume your playing him vs Spurs? Or is it just to avoid price increase? If you play him are you playing DVD/bale?

It would be to avoid the price increase (and allow me to get Fabs next week) AND I'd play him at Spurs. No Spurs players in my squad now, having already sold Bale this week.

6 games my estimation. although if he excels, could be his for keeps. he give great cover for his fullback and has been part of their 3 clans sheets on the bounce. I don't think moyes will be quick to change that.

Coleman stands really well in a dangerous area so ppl can't exploit it, bit like a sweeper at 5-a-side. he's impressive

Pienaar might not get back in if he's off in Jan. Moyes has previously stated the have no other squad played suited to that right role so there is the possibility of it continuing for the foreseeable future. check this link:

I think he'll keep starting for as long as he's playing well, not much competition for him and DM seems to back his players form rather than having favourites.

No one knows, we could still be saying the same thing in a months time to be be honest, he has played very well in midfield to this point and Everton are doing well, Moyes will want to maintain than. It obviously all rests with how close Pienaar is to a return and then the question is whether Coleman can force Neville into DM to claim the RB spot, Heitinga seems to be back in favour having said he wanted to leave, so it would mean Heitinga benched, with Neville playing DM and Coleman playing RB, which seems unlikely to me.

      But, we don't know.

What are peoples thoughts on Shola Ameobi (4.2) as a budget option for the 3rd striker slot? I think that he has got a good chance of getting some starts based on recent form in Newcastle's home games especially. I think they will go 4-4-2 at home which surely would see Ameobi partnering either Carroll (possibly not though with the whole assault charge thing hanging over him) or Nolan in attack.

If I did Berbatov > Ameobi next week it would allow me to do Nolan > Fabregas

Thoughts on Ameobi and those moves in general?

shola could get a run of games now, it's still a risk of course, he hasn't been a regular starter for some time. He's a Newcastle lad though, born in Heaton, he could step up. I think it's 50/50. attilia and toontom are good ppl to consult on this though

getting fab is is essential dude, so just do it.

Yeh, I that's what I'm thinking. Have to get Fab back in for GW10. I do have United's attack covered with Nani who I would also be more confident captaining over Berba aswell so I'm pretty sure I'm going to do it anyway and if Ameobi does look like he's going to get starts then it's a bonus and I can consider using him. If not, he can happily warm my bench for the time being. My midfield is strong enough that I'd be happy playing all 5 in a 3-5-2 or 4-5-1 formation if and when required so I will have options.

I have 4 transfers I want to make, but not sure what order to do it in. Any suggestions?
Bale - Adam to free funds for....
    Malouda - Fabregas
    Shawcross - Coleman
    O'Shea - Bosingwa.
    Already done S.Petrov - N'zogbia.
    Maybe:
    GW9: Shawcross - Coleman
GW10: Bale - Adam and Malouda - Fabregas
GW11: O'Shea - Bosingwa (see if he is starting?)
    Advice would be appreciated!
