Wayne Rooney and Gareth Bale dominated last night’s headlines for very different reasons. While the spectre of Rooney’s future hung over Old Trafford and added “flavour” to the terraces courtesy of a some biting banners, Bale was busy building his reputation with a San Siro hat-trick that oozed quality.

Around the media circus, United did have a game to win and win they did courtesy of a fine Nani strike. Over in Milan meanwhile, Bale’s efforts went unrewarded as Harry Redknapp’s side slipped to a 4-3 defeat to holders Inter, after an opening period that saw them lose a goal a minute into the game, followed by keeper Heurelho Gomes to a red and two more quickfire strikes.

Life without Rooney began well for Alex Ferguson; Nani’s quality strike underlined the form that have the winger atop of our Midfielder Watchlist rankings (updated later today). Nani, revelling in the attacking limelight that he’s assumed in Rooney’s absence has duly promised to deliver more of the same…

“I’ve scored a few goals this season and I want to score more..I don’t want to set myself any targets. I don’t want to say anything about that – I just want to work hard and see how well I do by the end of the season.”

Nani’s ascent to a consistent and productive performer provides some solace for Ferguson in troubled times at Old Trafford. Despite the goal and the victory that puts United well in control of their group, there’s no doubting that last night’s showing was listless and unconvincing. Tony Pulis will have been watching on and will be buoyed by what he saw ahead of United’s visit to the Britannia this weekend. Stoke will surely present a stern test for Ferguson’s back four, while United’s attacking players will likely need to find more guile if they are to get past the Potter’s muscular resistance.

There will be changes to the United lineup of course. Last night Ferguson shuffled five new faces into the side from the eleven that took the field against West Brom. Tomasz Kuszczak, Chris Smalling, Darren Fletcher, Ji-sung Park and Federico Macheda all came in which saw the likes of Berbatov, Edwin Van der Sar John O’Shea, Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand and Javier Hernandez all rested. All five would seem likely to push for a recall at Stoke, with Park set to keep his starting role on the left. Rooney, with his ankle injury that saw him miss last night’s cauldron of discontent, will surely be absent once again.

From a Fantasy perspective the prospects at United seem limited to Nani and Dimitar Berbatov’s talents. They will surely carry the responsibility to win United the points against a run of opponents that should offer continued returns over the next month (stk TOT WOL mcy avl WIG). While that pair of attacking assets can be relied upon, investment in United’s defence will be made with more trepidation – Stoke will stretch Vidic’s dominance in the air and Ferdinand’s fragile back and limbs; Spurs and Rafael Van der Vaart will weave a very different kind of problem at Old Trafford in Gameweek 10.

Home fixtures against Wolves and Wigan clearly hold the key to defensive returns from United in the next month, but it’s doubtful whether the promise of two clean sheets is enough to warrant the outlay required to recruit a United defender.

While we’ve already covered Bale’s stunning display in Italy, it’s worth picking over Redknapp’s team selection with one eye on the White Hart Lane clash with Everton this weekend. Bale’s showing will surely book him a start on the left-flank, despite his considerably exertions. Roman Pavlyuchenko’s absence as an unused sub would hint that he will start ahead of Peter Crouch, with Van der Vaart a prompting and creative force up in support; the Dutchman was suspended from last night’s game. Ledley King will be restored to the back line if he can recover from his ongoing knee problems, although Younes Kaboul’s return to the bench last night does at least offer Redknapp a further option.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I see that A Cole is now a full 2.5 more expensive than Bosingwa. I know Bos still has a big question mark hanging over him, but I do think that for a guy who can potentially equal, if not better, Cole's points for that price, then the risk of him missing a few games is worth it. I'm pretty keen on him.

As long as your defence is strong enough to cover when he gets rotated I think he's a pretty good option. When he's benched it would be unlikely for him to come on for 10-20 minutes and only get you 1 point.

£5.6M is pretty hard to ignore.

How often are Chelsea likely to be chasing a game though? Not too often IMO.

It could work the other way far more often. If Chelsea are winning 1-0, 2-0 Bos could be taken off for Ivanovic with 15 minutes to go to tighten it up. Clean sheet in the bag for him.

Don't know if anyone's done this comparison yet as I'm too busy at work to go reading through but now I'm on lunch....

    Bale vs VdV
Games played: Bale 8, VDV 5
    Goals: Bale 2, VDV 3
    Assists: Bale 1, VDV 1
    Shots: Bale 10, VDV 20
On target: Bale 7, VDV 10
Set Pieces: Bale 2, VDV 5
Key Passes: Bale 24, VDV 8

Pre VDV Bale had 10 shots on goal (3 v City, 5 v Stoke, 2 v Wigan), since VDV he's had zero. I've been unable to find out how many key passes he made pre VDV but I'm betting it was alot as he must have made 6 or 7 just vs City, although obviously this is the one area where bale stands out. Now I like both players but this says to me that VDV directly affects Bales output. Big time. And VDV is on corners, pens and free-kicks. I know Bale will still get points but VDV will get more

Good research. With it being early days on VDV, maybe Harry will find a way to get the most out of both of them on the pitch together. Bale is still teetering on the edge for me, a Bale>Arteta move could be on next week. Though his points have dropped off, his performances haven't so I still think there are good scores within him.

I kind of agree in general, but for this I don't think Cesc is necessarily worth more than Rooney. Nothing to do with the fact that he plays midfield.

I disagree, Arsenal are very close to building a side that can dominate. If we have a front line of Song, Cesc, Diaby, Arshavin, Nasri, VP, we can have the likes of Chamakh, Bendtner, Ramsey, Wilshere, Walcott, Rosicky, Denilson all on the bench, what other team has that amount of depth?

How can you possibly say that? You really think you've seen enough of Sturridge, Mceachren, Bruma, and Kakuta to say that? It might just be that they are not good enough to get in the side ahead of the likes of Drogba, Essien and Terry.

No, i was just trying to make a point to Pranit that our squad is as strong as Chelsea', Utd and City. A lot of pundits have said that the chelsea bench looks weak but it doesnt matter right now because there starting 11 is so strong. In a season or two i think Arsene Wenger' long term plan is going to pay off.

It is quite nice if they are all playing well. Arshavin is just a bit hit and miss for my liking. Remember you're front line won't look like that from next year - Cesc is definitely going to Barca in the summer, sounded pretty close this year and he wants to go!

"The likes of" - I wouldn't be too happy about having to bring on bendtner 😀

Yeah, Wilshere, Ramsey & Nasri have shown they are capable of filling some of the gap that will be left when cesc leaves. Bendtner' not all bad, id rather have him coming off the bench then N'Gog, Owen, Macheda, Sturridge, Jo. Hes a good 3rd striker in my opinion.

Speaking from experience, it's very risky business knocking Wenger's kids. A lot of those he shows faith in turn out to be superstars.

There's a brilliant quote from Wenger (although I can't find it), speaking about a young centre half he had at Monaco. The centre half was always knocked in the press, Wenger was under extreme pressure to drop him, but Wenger's training and extensive tests showed this player had huge potential, so he stuck with him. This young centre half, Lilian Thuram, went on to become France's most capped player, and a key part of their World Cup win in 1998.

I hope you all got on Napoli at evens because the odds are shifting pretty quick thanks to the likely Liverpool team:
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/oct/20/roy-hodgson-manchester-united-fernando-torres
A good accy for this evening is:
    Wins for (in caps)
    NAPOLI v Liverpool
    SPORTING LISBON V Gent
    VILLARREAL V Paok
    LILLE V Levski Sofia
    MAN CITY V Lech Poznan
    ZENIT v Hadjuk Split
    ATLETICO MADRID v Rosenborg
    SPARTA PRAGUE v Lausanne Sports
On Paddy Power a €2.50 stake has potential returns of €34.60. The chanciest for me is the last one (Sparta Prague)

Can't believe those are the odds for an 8 way accumulator. I haven't looked at the individual odds but I wouldn't be happy with anything less than 33/1 for all of those.

EVERY accy I post you piss on the chips of, you were right with the last one but I was let down by England and Man Utd who should have both won.
Basically I pick a certain number of highly favoured teams, if you can make one euro turn into fourteen it is a success, no point me adding in teams that I think will lose to increase the odds, I'm happy with a more conservative bet.

    Here's my idea...

They should introduce a rule whereby all Premier League managers have to name their team for the weekend on Friday by a certain time. Then any changes to that have to be approved by the Premier League in exceptional circumstances (e.g. injury, death, etc). If Ancellotti can do it then why can't everyone?

I mean its ridiculous having to try and second guess who is or isn't starting at 11:30am on a Saturday.

hey guys this is my current team:

    Hart Carrson
    Oshea Konchesky Dann Coleman ShawX
    Bale Malouda Nani Hleb Davies
    Caroll Drogba Tevez

    my plan is
    gw9: Bale>VdV (already done)
    Hleb>NZog(4 pt hit)

    gw 10: malouda>Fab
    Oshea>Simpson

this is the only way that i can get fabs back in my team. my choice was either to take out either tevez or malouda but went for malouda mainly because he may get rested and rotated in fixtures and tevez is the safer bet. is my plan good and should i follow it? if no, what changes should i alter to bring back fabs to my team??

Nah, because people would be like "RMT", then no-one (to their knowledge) would reply, so they'd repost it 5 times inside an hour, and everyone would ignore them.

Imagine a circle of people with people only listening to the people on their left.

And besides that, I'd probably get very lonely 😀

Team for gw9, no transfers made, 2.2 m in bank.

    Foster
    Mummy Williamson Jara
    Nani Arshavin Malouda Bale
    Drogs (c) Tevez Carroll
    Subs: Gohouri, Shawcross, Cleverless

I reckon I may keep my transfer for gw10 when fabs comes in for Arshavin. However, I could do Arshavin to Nzogbia this week and then Cleverly to Fabregas and Carroll to cheaper striker. That will give me a 3-5-2 each week with a mid/for of

    Fabregas Nani Bale Malouda Nzogbia
    Tevez Drogba

    Opinions?

    Hart
    Gohouri Coleman Alex
    Malouda N'Zogbia Nani Bale
    Tevez Berbatov Carrol

    Subs: Sagna, Richards, Beausejour

Plan was to sagna to elmo his gw, freeing up cash for bale to fabregas for gw10. But can I get by without drog? 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 all the way for me personally.

That's what I'm considering to be honest. If You have the right midfielders they seem to score highly! For me Ill stick to 3-4-3 for a while because it will take some rearranging and a few weeks to get to 3-5-2 because of my current squad.

Definitely something Im thinking about though

Looking for some RMT advice if at all possible, as boring as it may be...

Played my WC last week and overall very happy with my team, but with Samba's red, albeit resulting in just a one match ban, i'm very tempted to take a 4 point hit this week.

I am definitely going to do Nasri to Fabs this week which leaves me with 0.5 in the bank. As long as there are no price drops this week I could do Samba to Bosingwa if he gets the green light on Friday.

But is it worth it? Any thoughts would be grand.

i dont think bosingwas position is too assured
we have been told hel play against weak oposition , thats all

after that i think carlo will stick with alex and ivanovic for cb and rb.

ivanovic made team of the pl last season and alex is always an asset on the pitch as a cb but also as a free kick taker.

I am still thinking of bringing in bosingwa this week for konchesky!

I'm struggling to calculate how many penalty taker I have in my side. My front 8 is:

    Fabregas Nani Arteta VDV Adam
    Drogba Tevez Carroll

Carroll isn't taking them, while Arteta, VDV, Adam and Tevez are all first choice. That's 4/5.

Thenthere is Drogba, Nani and Fabregas. Fabregas obviously takes them when RVP is away and doesn't wen RVP plays. But what about Drogba and Nani, both have taken them this season, but are they top of the pecking order?
