Win, lose, or draw, Gary Cahill has been racking up the Bonus Points lately, with a haul in four of the last five games. Cahill’s strong performances have seen him blink once more on our Fantasy radar, while simultaneously prompting quotes in the real world about the young international claiming to be ready for a move to a bigger club. Such comments can be a slap in the face to your team-mates and run the risk of internal dissension, but at least for now they appear in Cahill’s case, to reflect a heightened intensity and commitment in every game..

With the recent win over Spurs and draw with Everton, Bolton continue to climb the table, and sit tied for sixth place on sixteen points. While there is still work to be done, the 2010-11 season has been a far cry from last year, when the threat of relegation loomed large.  Most of the credit for the turn-around this season is rightfully put down to the increased offensive output led by Kevin Davies and Johan Elmander, but the Bolton defence shouldn’t be overlooked by Fantasy Managers just yet.

Although the only clean sheet of the season thus far came on opening day, Bolton’s back four may be due further consideration given their forthcoming run of fixtures that includes four home games in the next eight outings against Newcastle, Blackpool, Blackburn, and West Brom, as well as an away affair with Wolves this weekend. Setting aside the other three games between now and Boxing Day – away to Everton, Man City, and Sunderland – Bolton could reasonably look to return around three clean sheets during this eight Gameweek period.

Team performance is only half the picture however. Cahill stands out amongst the Bolton defenders precisely because he doesn’t need clean sheets (or even wins) to provide a Fantasy return. Of course, those alternate scoring opportunities always come at a price, and the Fantasy Premier League powers placed a 1.0 premium on Cahill in comparison to teammates Zat Knight, Gretar Steinsson, and Paul Robinson. To date, selecting Cahill over other Bolton defenders hasn’t paid off, as Knight and Steinsson have scored one goal each, while Cahill has yet to find the net.  But with 5 goals last season and 3 the season before, Cahill remains a proven attacking threat on set pieces.

Cahill also has stood out during the past several years as the Bolton defender you want for Bonus Points, with 16 in 2009-10 and 19 in 2008-09. Cahill looks primed to blow past those totals this year, and already has 11 from the first 12 games.  Indeed, if you set aside the Arsenal game in which he received a straight red, and the two leagues games he subsequently sat out, Cahill has received Bonus in a remarkable 6 of 9 games in which he played the full 90 minutes, including 1 Bonus Point in the draw with Birmingham, 3 Bonus Points in the draw with Everton last night, and 2 Bonus in the loss to Liverpool.

Further to this, he actually represents a fairly decent differential. Cahill’s ownership took a substantial hit following the red card and suspension and then dwindled slowly over time as he has yet to find the net.  He is currently owned by just 4.5% of FPL teams.

da Beeeez Recognizing that it's better to be lucky than good, da Beeeez often sleeps through the early games on the weekends...

Speaking of Gary Cahill, just seen SSN reporting they want to sell to balance the books. Wouldn't it be TEXTBOOK if Arsenal bought him after all the abuse he gets from Mr Faulkner. Eeeeeee please make it happen o' mystical lord of transfers.

Smalling is looking the business too. Evans was also part of the longest clean sheet record in PL history. Anything else?

Vidic and Rio are quality, agree. Evans has been shocking this season, the forwards he is playing against don't worry about his history when they have been capitalising on his mistakes.

Doesn't it seem a bit odd to come out saying they 'have' to sell. Nothing like a bit of debt & desperation to knock value off your players. I'll start the bidding at 8mill for Cahill.

Just watched it again-definitely went sideways but the momentum of Williamson and Roberts makes it look like it could have been either player that touched it-not clear, so I suppose it was down to Robinson's long kick that the goal was created...but defending was poor!

You went down a few places because Etherington's assist got removed so now I'm ahead of you 😛

I think you should consider Foley instead of Simpson. Same price, but you avoid doubling up on Newcastle defense, and Wolves have some decent fixtures.

I wouldn't get rid of Ethers btw. Stoke have good fixtures and Etherington's their main man. I think you could do just Jara > Foley this week, and see what injuries pop up next week that might force your hand.

No need to rush transfers, you never know when you could need them.

Look at the overall leaders. Zophar, above, is doing well.

Does anyone here listen to the Football Weekly podcast?

It's normally very entertaining, although lacking the FPL gold that you get here, of course. The new one is just in, and their view of city has got me contemplating a switch from Hart to Cech, as Chelsea have such a better home record. If I was a City fan I'd be disappointed by the style being played, more than anything. If you're paying that much money to watch a team you'd expect to be entertained at the very least, wouldn't you?

Having said that, I've just got Tevez in.

FW is genius. Not had the pleasure yet today but will be immersed in it later.

AC Jimbo's "Newcastle are like Christmas, with their Carroll zingers on the pitch and their ho ho ho's off it" from Monday was a joy to behold.

I know Nani is supposedly protected, but anyone any idea if this is actually the case? Didn't Tevez rise last week when protected?

If Nani's gonna rise think I need to get him in for Cahill.

I have to disagree with the article.

Gary Cahill is a decent player, but can't see Bolton keeping cleansheets regardless of their opposition in the near future.

if you're willing to gamble on petrov getting his place straight back i'd say petrov narrowly over lee. otherwise it may be worth a punt on a wolves midfielder, jarvis the safest looking of the lot

What are you people thinking about coleman and elmo..

Was it just coincidence that both were rested or possibly dropped?

Should I keep or get rid?

Coleman's still very young, i'd imagine Moyes rested him since there's been so many matches in quick succession lately and he doesnt want the lad burning out.
I think Elmo's exclusion was more to do with a change of tactics (aka parking the bus) to prevent a repeat of their humiliation away to Newcastle, so it was perfectly understandable to drop him for a tough match away to Spurs.

Was just thinking, last season there was a grid that showed which players were racking up yellow cards and nearing a suspension. With Scholes now serving a ban it'd be fairly useful to have that again, something to keep in mind before making transfers.

Next week Nani will come in.

Etherington and Arteta will make way, but which one should I keep for this week?
