Chelsea have confirmed that Alex will be sidelined for a period of 6-8 weeks after it was revealed that the centre-back will require surgery on his knee injury.

The news follows today’s reports of a prolonged absence for John Terry and leaves Carlo Ancelotti’s defence seemingly in tatters.

Alex and Terry both missed Sunday’s Stamford Bridge encounter with Sunderland and the impact of that was there for all to see. Chelsea will now likely go into trips to Birmingham and Newcastle with Sunday’s central defensive pairing of Branislav Ivanovic and Paulo Ferreira; following that Ancelotti’s side will face encounters with Spurs, United and Arsenal.

It’s fair to say that Chelsea’s assets now appear to be plummeting in Fantasy value. As detailed in our earlier article on the Terry situation, the chances of clean sheets over the coming Gameweeks look limited, leaving the many Ashley Cole owners pondering a transfer or clinging to the hope of attacking returns.

The only possible silver lining that could benefit owners of Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba, is that Ancleotti’s side may now be forced to push forward for goals with little chance of shutting out opponents. That could simply be straw clutching however.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Possibly. I reckon carlo would rather ferreira at right back for the tough run of games. He offers more stability than Bos and can actually defend...sometimes.

Are you part of the anti-Bosingwa brigade then Si? I always thought I was in a minority thinking that Bosingwa is hopeless....

Dbronaldo made an interesting point a couple of days ago. Our worst football in the past few years seems to coincide with having Bosingwa in the side. Like now, and under Scolari.

In light of the lack of Chelsea defenders now available, what do people think of this team for the weekend:

    Foster
    Bosingwa Coleman Vidic Cahill
    Fabs Nani(c) Gerrard Adam
    Drogba Carrol

    Hahnemann Crainey Ferguson Ameobi

+1 Doing the exact same transfer, Cashley has been one of my top performers all season, Ive actually transfered him out already this year and brought him in for his triple 9's over the last few GW's 🙂 But time to get rid again, not only because of Chelsea' defensive injuries but fixtures arent great either... cue Cashley two goal brace next week!

Chelsea fans need to get over it, in December 09', Evra was our only fit defender, forcing Fletcher and Carrick to step in.

At least Chelsea have replacements* to come in who are recognised defenders.

It depends how Chelsea respond. They might make 2 central midfielders more defensive than normal to support whoever's at CB, leaving Cole and Bosingwa attacking, or they'll ask Cole and Bosingwa to be more cautious. In which case, I'll probably swap Cole for Vidic.

                  Crouch VdV

                  Bale Modric Palacios Lennon

That's still a bloody good attacking half of your team. Palacios does the dirty work while Modric and VdV are two excellent playmakers. Bale and Lennon stretch the play and that useless timmy look a like upfront floats about confusing everyone.

Cahill for me, with the rotation, although i can see city having alot mroe clean sheets, Shay given is brilliant anyway, but he'll be playing out of his skin to keep his spot. One thing given doesnt do, that hart has done a few of, is make stupid mistakes.

For me, it would be Cahill, i had him this season till he got that red. But alot of people would disagree with me.

Your right in a way that they can score but defensively they are weak and naive.
Playing Drogba whilst he's ill isnt' helping and Malouda only gets the odd goal now and then.

That would be incredibly harsh on Wolves, seeing how they've given him his chance, and have a much bigger crisis than Chelsea.

Why harsh on Wolves? There will presumably be a clause in the loan contract (if there isn't then this is irrelevant) that says we can recall him whenever we want to, and both clubs will have known that when the deal was sorted out.

Not until January you won't. Will be very interesting to see if Chelsea manage to do what Utd did last season: survive without your defense for at least a month. Title race = wide open.

Is that how it works though? I thought that the majority of loan deals have a clause whereby the parent club can recall the player whenever they want...

Well i know Utd wanted to recall TC after Valencia snapped his ankle, and they can't until january. It was meant to be a year long loan too. I'm just guessing that Snoop's loan deal is similar / the same.

Know of anymore wire footballing look a likes?

Hmmm maybe... Bruma it is then!

Haha, I'll have to think about some others... The Ashley Young/Marlo is classic, said that the first time Marlo appeared, and I clocked the Mancienne/Snoop one too.

PNev/Bubbles is hilarious.. They've got identical head shapes..

I can see why Andy Caroll and Jordan Henderson are getting starts but not so sure about Gibb. Then again Warnock is the only real option.

I'd like to see Cahill start with Ferdinand at the back, assuming the captain will start.

We should play some kinda of 4-3-3 with Caroll the lone striker and maybe Gerrard and Young just behind, although with the current players in the squad I'm not sure that would work.

No doubt it will be 4-4-2

I fear you may be right. Rather see Young in ahead of Milner on current form.

I guess he will probably go for Milner because of a little more experience though. Can't completely rely on youngsters and the uncapped!

I'd have described them the other way round...

I don't care what Andy Gray says, Gerrard's best position has always been behind the forward for me.. And Henderson isn't an attacking midfielder.

No 10? Plays there for Sunderland while Cattermole hacks his way around behind him. He's certainly more attacking than defensive anyway.

Nah Henderson and Catermole are much of a muchness. Just Henderson is abit more effective goin forward
                Certianly not an attacking player.

Aside from Cashley, Baines is the best English LB by some distance IMO. Capello obviously doesn't trust him after what happened in the summer during the time of the friendlies.
