A five-one battering at the home of your bitter rivals is never something to be positive about, but a 39th minute tactical re-think that day at St James’ Park may ironically prove beneficial to Steve Bruce’s Sunderland in the long-term.

Having favoured a 4-5-1 formation since the start of the season, Bruce hauled off out-of-position favourite Elmohamady and replaced the Egyptian with record-signing Asamoah Gyan, resultantly changing his side’s formation to a 4-4-2 to counter a rampant Newcastle. Since then, Gyan has never looked back.

With Darren Bent succumbing to a hamstring injury, Gyan has taken on the mantle as senior member of a Sunderland strike-pairing that sees him joined up-front by on-loan Man United youngster Danny Welbeck, and since that Tyne-Wear derby, his performances have been sensational. The subsequent three games have seen the Ghanaian as the in-form forward in the Premier League, bagging 4 goals and picking up 5 Bonus Points, a fantastic return of 27 points from his only league starts to date. Even Bent’s imminent return to action will surely do little to limit Gyan’s minutes now, with Welbeck the one briefly benched for the first half at White Hart Lane instead of the £13m signing from Rennes as Bruce began with a 4-5-1 before reverting to two up front for the second forty-five.

Sunderland have a great set of fixtures up next, which reads (EVE, wol, WHM, ful, BOL) and are currently on a run of form which sees them with just one defeat in their last eleven games. In addition, they are unbeaten at home all season, despite facing Arsenal, Man City and Man United at the Stadium of Light.

As the first team to score at Stamford Bridge in the league this season, Sunderland will, undoubtedly, be brimming with confidence coming into the weekend and Asamoah Gyan, priced at £7.2m in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and owned by a mere 2.5% of managers, has already shown the league leaders he has the pace, power and precise finishing to put any team to the sword.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I suppose there is going to be some p-offed people with Malouda's price drop.

Must say i did not bother tracking it yesterday but he was "only" on 20%, 2 days ago with Drogba on 50%+.

Must have been a mass fire sale on him malouda then?

Out of all the top strikers, defies at 8.6m looks the best to me. Remember his 5 goals (smiles and sighs) I would rather have him and cesc than say drogba and downing Out of all the top teams the striker

This got lost on the bottom of the page. But forwards have scored 141 goals this year, which adds up to 564 points from goals. When you add the midfielders, they have scored 147 goals this year, which amounts to 735 points.

Important if people are considering certain trades.

It's not really that useful, because you're neglecting that a much smaller pool of strikers are contributing to those goals. Most teams play with no more than 2 strikers, and if they are contributing to almost half the goals, their value suddenly becomes much greater.

Think about it this way. If 15 strikers scored 141 goals versus 40 midfielders scoring 147, then where is the real value?

Surely the value must be in picking from the 15 strikers.

Fair point, but let me ask you this, where has everyones points been coming from recently? Tevez. Drogba, berba, chamak, Torres? No its been bale, vdv, nolan, cesc, Cahill etc also midfielders as a rule are much cheaper and so better value

            35% into the season.

In a perfect world one would know when to buy/sell players before they go on a scoring run or a dip in form.

I had Cesc since gw 1 thru all his injuries when no one in my league did. I had a couple of 2 pointers as capt to show for it. Did not capt him when he scored 11pts. My rival did.

I never had Carrol when he scored 3 goals. Bought him the week after.

It's nearly impossible to get the timing right and sometimes you have to just sit it out. Nothing says Drogba/Tevez won't score 200pts over this season compared to say Nolan's 150.

          this is interesting.
however, elmander, carroll, drogba have done pretty well.

any i agree that the stat about how many goals have been scored by midfielders vs. strikers is very misleading.

I think a 3-4-3 suits me just fine - there are cheap midfielders who always play, whereas very cheap strikers are difficult to come by...

Hi- my h2h opponent has Al habsi/Hart. Uncertainty on Hart & his inj but lets just ignore that.

I have foster/Jussi and need help. Who do I play? Keep on putting faith in Jussi(like last week) and then Foster get's a CS.

How about this week? Play Foster vs Chelsea?

I don't think that's advisable. Maybe play Birmingham attackers vs this Chelsea defense, but not Foster.

I definitely rate Bolton's chances of a clean sheet better than Birmingham's. I'm playing Hahnemann away to Blackpool rather than Foster and Wolves haven't kept a clean sheet yet this season.

Basically why I've got Zhirkov. Don't particularly rate him, but it means I've got relatively cheap exposure to both midfield and defensive returns.

Drogba, over the period of the season, will earn more points. He's had a huge year and he has to hit some bad form. He's only human.

Well for Evs information , Torres was introduced at half time and looked very lively , although he didnt recieve much service (as usual)
His ankle looked ok and at one stage he tried an audacious sissor kick which just missed the target. Will be good to go saturday

Any Everton fans can explain why Arteta plays so deep now?

He is one of the only Everton players who can unlock defenses with his passing but he isn't getting into the places he needs to because it seems like Moyes wants him to play deep.

They already have Heitinga who can play as a DM so why not push Arteta forward?

No wonder they aren't scoring any goals if they are just relying on Cahill scoring on set pieces and longballs from Distin in defense
