Steven Gerrard will undergo a scan today to assess the extent of a hamstring injury sustained in England’s 2-1 friendly defeat to France last night at Wembley. Gerrard left the field after 84 minutes with the problem, breaking an agreement between Liverpool and England stating that the midfielder would only play for an hour.

The prognosis is not yet known, although the Daily Telegraph’s Henry Winter has reported through his Twitter account, that Gerrard could be out of action for 4-5 weeks…

The Reds were left fuming after Fabio Capello decided to break their promise by keeping the player on the field. Liverpool’s head of fitness and conditioning Darren Burgess vented his anger on Twitter, although the rant was removed shortly afterwards…

“Unbelievable from all associated with England and English FA with regard to Steven Gerrard’s injury. Completely ignored agreement and past history.”

The Liverpool captain’s possible spell on the sidelines will come as a massive blow for Roy Hodgson’s men and a large proportion of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Managers, with the player currently boasting 12.9% ownership. Although one of the most expensive players in the FPL game at £11.4 and by no means enjoying his greatest season, Gerrard has managed to notch-up a steady 57 points this so far this term and could leave Fantasy Football Managers with a dilemma.

With the probable absence of Gerrard and Lucas Leiva’s suspension, Liverpool are facing a crisis in midfield for the visit of West Ham on Saturday. This surely means that, along with Raul Meireles, Christian Poulsen will start the game and the likes of Jonjo Shelvey and Jay Spearing could hope for some minutes. With Gerrard being the regular spot-kick taker Fernando Torres, who is also a doubt, will be the likely replacement.

Saturday’s home fixture against West Ham is a must win game for Liverpool, but with doubts hanging over several key first-team regulars (Torres, Joe Cole, Dirk Kuyt and Martin Skrtel) and of course the Gerrard injury, it is already looking a potentially uncomfortable encounter for Roy Hodgson’s side.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

      Go for a better value bet - Man Utd will be shorter odds than they should be, considering their recent form.

      I like:

      WEST HAM to be Liverpool
      BIRMINGHAM to beat Chelsea (with Brum at home)
      and OVER 2.5 GOALS in the North London derby (a short price, but still a good value bet).

            you said bet 10 get 20, right? So you'll be getting 20 back. You have a free shot at getting enough of a bank to be able to start getting decent returns.

            It's your own call, of course - some people would no doubt recommend betting on a short favourite instead.

            For my money, betting in play on Betfair is where the profit is 😉

    Who to play Mummy or Jara? I prefer to play the Mummy but i am not sure of him starting. I could rely on the auto sub or put Jara in the first 11. What do u think should I do. I could also make a 4 point hit and buy Man Utd defender?

      I don't think either will start tbh.. Jara played for Chile early this morning and has a long flight back. DiMatteo is also saying that he will field a "big" team and that they have trained all week with a new formation. So both of those will come off the bench if at all imo...

    I never thought I'd see the day where Fabregas and Rooney were differentials coming into a weekend, Fab on 10.9% ownership and Rooney on 8.6%. Oh I do love having Rooney in my team, would make a return and a goal or an assit all the more sweater sitting down to watch the match on Saturday afternoon. This United bias could cost me again this season! Tell me to stick with Drogba!

    My team:
    Foster Krul
    Elmo Simpson Coleman Jara Dann
    Fabregas Nani Bale VdV Adam
    Drogba Tevez Carroll

    nothing in bank

    My rough plan over the next 3 or so weeks…
    Drogba->Gyan
    Possibly Bale or VdV-> Jarvis or Albrighton
    Elmo and 1 or two of the others bumped up (to possibly Toure, Vidic or Kolarov) with the freed up cash.

    Good or bad moves???

            People are going for Davies because he scoops up the BP's and is on penalties. But then again, the same could be said for Arteta 3 weeks ago.

            I have had Elmander for 4 weeks now, and he has proved to be a great purchase for me, it is only a matter of time before he breaks his home scoring duck.

    Brunt was removed along with captain Aaron Hughes, as expected, among the four changes that were made at half-time.

    doesnt suggest a knock at all in fairness, unless he hit the gargle that night and crocked himself.

    Malouda -> Nani, guaranteed transfer, will wait until tomorrow though. Now what about the others? Some combination of these.

    Arteta -> Jarvis
    Arteta -> Cahill
    Piquionne -> Elmander or K.Davies
    Drogba -> Rooney
    Elmo -> Ferdinand
    Elmo -> Vidic
    Elmo -> Kolarov
    Hutton -> One of the above 3

    Which one (s) ?? I am willing to take an 8 point hit, I will do at least 1 of those transfers, I have two freebies. So will do at least 2, I think the Piquionne -> Elmander/Davies one will be done too, but which out of the two. And which others to do if I do that one, Mind you I can only afford Elmo -> Kolarov if I get Elmander instead of Davies.

      Nice team, perhaps a bit cheap on the defence compared to some others but Midfield especially looks nice, Adam is a doubt isn't he, limped off on Tuesday playing for Scotland, And I wouldn't want Adam after the Wolves game anyways.

      I'm wildcarding too this week and I'm doing something different with the front eight - ie buying bench fodder for one of the midfield places so I don't have to choose. I've lost so many points on Adam this season by choosing him as sub wrongly that I'm sick of it.

      Torres/Rooney is a risk for a WC team - one may be injured, the other one almost certainly still is injured. Choose a safe name.

      The defence is a bit weak but if you scale down NZog or Adam to bench fodder you can deal with this.

        Nice ideas for him there, I would combine the two and lose Adam for bench fodder.

          Don't agree that he is bench fodder. That's the problem. Plenty of playing options for around the 4.5 mark to take that place which frees up some nice funds.

        Haven't bought Adam for exactly this reason. The ideal candidates in this price range are Ferguson and, slightly better due to assists and the odd goal, Barton. Always able to chip in with a few points but never gonna score huge and make you regret not starting them.

      It's the Joleon Lescott/Richard Dunne effect - scores a few goals, suddenly everyone wants him. Mind you, if he can keep up his goal rate, then he's worth it! Can't say I'm first in the queue for that bandwagon though.

      Foster, Birmingham will fancy their chances against Chelsea, and while I don't think they will keep them out (wounded animal and all that), Foster will have plenty of save points

      Yup. Norwegian newspapers are saying the same thing. I know this keeper really well as he plays for my local town's side and I gotta say well done United! He is truly a magnificent keeper with lots of quality, and I think he'll cope with the high Premier League level quite quickly

      depends what the rest of your defence looks like.
      If I had to do a 4 pt hit I would go elmo - toure and then toure - kolarov when he has confirmed his place in the side.

    I was going to bring Konchesky into my WC team but the Gerrard injury is making me think twice. Is there another decent option for around 5m to go with Vidic, Kolarov, Coleman and Foley?

    Can't agree with the point about Chelsea. The do offer value but their defence is a mess at the minute.

          I actually now hate this season. Everyone I have either gets injured or falls foul of rotation. At least I may be able to scrabble together three defenders this week...but with Brunt out I may need four.

    Would I be mad to get rid of both Drogs and Malouda this week? From what I know Drogs dropped out of the Ivory Coast squad and is still struggling with malaria.
