Jamie Carragher’s 450th Premier League appearance was definitely one to forget last Sunday, with the centre-half suffering a dislocated shoulder in the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham. His replacement Sotirios Kyrgiakos may have been on the end of a rollicking from Carragher for being slow to get warmed up to replace him, but with the Liverpool vice-captain now reportedly sidelined for up to three months and a long-lasting calf injury still keeping Daniel Agger out of the running, you can be sure that the big Greek will be ready and raring to go in this unexpectedly prolonged run at the heart of Roy Hodgson’s defence.

It is the Reds favourable upcoming fixtures (AVL, new, FUL, blp, WOL, BOL) that make Kyrgiakos such a particularly alluring prospect. After a torrid start to the season Liverpool have finally -albeit at a stuttering rate- started to climb the Premier League table and Hodgson must surely see a promising pre-2011 run as the perfect opportunity to get their season back on course and draw a line through what has been a problematic year for the Anfield men.

At a colossal 6ft 4in, Kyrgiakos is always an aerial threat and has scored two goals in just six games so far this season, finding the net in both his Anfield league appearances. With the club still awaiting Fernando Torres’ bravura performance, Joe Cole having a frustrating period with form and niggling injuries and Steven Gerrard temporarily sidelined, they will rely on the lofty Greek to be a menace in the box at every given set piece.

Priced at just £5.1 million on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Kyrgiakos could be the ideal bargain defender to allow you to spend your budget on a big money move in midfield or attack. Also something of a Bonus Points magnet, he’s been awarded the maximum three points on two out of his five full appearances, which -considering the current lack of clean sheets knocking about- perhaps gives him the nod over similarly-priced team mates Paul Konchesky and Martin Skrtel for anyone considering Liverpool defensive cover.

His Fantasy ownership, a mere 1.1%, only adds to Kyrgiakos’ appeal, suggesting he could well just turn out to be the perfect “differential” over the next few Gameweeks as the season heats up for the Christmas period.

Yeah I am in the same position.
I have narrowed down a list of replacements for VDV to N'Zogbia, Brunt, Bale, Arshavin, MGP, and Kuyt.
Which of them do you think?

I can field a back-three with Konchesky (AVL), Kolarov (BOL) and Vidic (bpl).

    I also have concerns over:
    - Hahnemann (no longer first choice?)
    - Van der Vaart (injury)
    - Coleman (no longer a part of the Everton XI?)
    - José Enrique (maybe not the best choice out there, but I don't know if I can take him out now)

    Current XI (Team ID: 1665396):

    Foster (TOT)
Konchesky (AVL) | Kolarov (BOL) | Vidic (bpl)
Nani (bpl) | N'Zogbia (STK) | Nasri (FUL) | (VdV replacement)
Elmander (mci) | Carrol (wba) | Drogba (EVE)
    SUBS: 12: Hahnemann | 13: Jose Enrique, 14: Ferguson, 15: Coleman

    Options:

    a) Vdv OUT, (insert name here) IN. No pt hit.
    b) VdV OUT, (insert name here IN) + Coleman OUT, (insert name here) IN. 4 pt hit.
    c) Other options? Hahnemann, Enrique or Elmander out?

    Got 6.6 in the bank.

Thanks for reading my novel, and for not leaving any response at all.

Hmmm, you deserve a reply for the quality of the post. Its not just a "who shud i get in 4 van der vart dis week?", so here goes.

Are there any players YOU actually WANT ? My policy on transfers is to get the players you want, rather than get rid of those you don't want... VDV needs to go, I am going for David Dunn (WOL), he has some nice upcoming fixtures, wait until Friday at least to do transfers because of the snow. I am leaving Coleman in, and I think you should too, he can bench warm for this week at least, you will also have more of an indication as to whether he will be playing, in fact DO NOT get rid of him, he might be playing in Arteta's absence and/or because David Moyes changes it after the 4-1 thrashing from West Brom. Leave Hahnemann, I would get rid of him during your January Wildcard, keepers aren't worth points hits this season. And again, after this weekend you will get a better indication. I hoped this helped, which players do you want?

        Oh, Gregory!

Thank you very much, and yeah, as a regular reader (lurker?) on this site, I dislike all these simple questions answered hundreds of times before. Maybe not as much as RBJ, but who does, anyway?

Well, that seems to be the problem. I genuinely don't know! There are not so many players out there that I want.

Dunn transfer seems sound, though. Nice differential. I like it! But have you thought about how injury prone he is? Especially with all these worries of postponements, flexibility will be needed to have a good FPL season!

You don't have any suggestions, do you?

Dunn, for me the MGP bandwagon has gone, and his stats aren't appealing. He is injury prone yes, but then MGP has had the most recent injury. I have Nani N'Zogbia and Nasri already, the 3 obvious ones. I also need to get rid of Arteta so am going to feel one of the spots with Dunn, the other, well I don't know. As for the Postponements, well I am waiting until Friday for transfers but am trying not to have many players from 1 game. Dunn could be a gem, but then again he could not, just like anyone. Good luck on your decision.

Your excuse for Dunne's performances this season was pathetic.

Remember how much shit you gave JT for his performances around the time of the affair scandal, i.e. when he had a legitmate reason for not playing his best.

If Terry ever started playing as badly as Dune is right now, which obviously won't eve happen, you'd be making such a fuss.

He had a bad world cup.
An Eng journo wrote an article last week on how JT's inclusion on the Fifa list made a mockery of everything it stood for.
He mentioned that most of the footballers must have been sunning them selves on a beach when Eng played Germany.

Eng also lived on the edge massively v Slovenia and Algeria. Which was in no small part to terrys poor positioning.

I actually agree with DBRonaldo. Matt Jarvis is essential.

Nah seriously, Terry aint the best player out there but his partnership with Carvalho is still probably one of the best Ive ever seen.

Dunne was excellent for many, many years but I think hes starting to look a bit long in the tooth now

I think just "twat" isn't telling the whole story; most footballers are massive twats.

Balotelli has serious behaviour issues, probably down to him being subject to a lot of racism, growing up as a black kid in Italy. He seems to have found learned to assume a place in life as an anarchic antagonist, being someone everyone loves to hate. Could seriously affect his game in the long run, especially working under a non-manager like Mancini. If he was under someone like Ferguson, Redknapp or Wenger, I'd back him to turn it around. Under Mancini, I'd bet he'll just continue to be a big prick.

Do people think Arshavin will be rested for Arsenal's 2 easy games in their next four (ie FUL and STK) so that he is fit for their hard games (mun and CHE). Or will Wenger just play him for all four of them anyway?

dont worry about a measley 4 points when you will recoup so much more by making that stunning move

Kolarov is a better choice at the moment.

Similar attacking and defensive potential, better fixtures and for a cheaper price. He's also got very low ownership which is great for getting a lead on opponents.

hard to say about boateng, he's their normal first choice but zabaleta had a stormer against fulham and micah richards almost won(then lost with disappearing act defending) the stoke game.
alex is already in brazil for his surgery.

Anybody else going for Arshavin over Nasri? If Arsenal had a set of nice fixtures I'd probably pick Nasri over him but the Arsh always performs when you don't expect him too, i.e. the harder games. The main reason why I've gone for him seeing as they play Man Utd & Chelsea in the next four games. Really wouldn't surprise me if he let me down this week against Fulham but gets a goal against United.

Arsenal seem to be winning the games you expect them to drop points in, then dropping points you expect them to win this season.

They might actually have a chance against Chelsea if Drogba is still out of form by then.

Did you see the behaviour of the Spartak fans at Stamford Bridge when Drogba was taking a corner in front of them? Pathetic. And for some reason no one even mentioned it... And that banner the Locomotiv fans made about Odemwingie was disgraceful.

            I was merely messing.

And as we know alot of russian fans are racist. This isnt to say that all other countries too have racist fans. (I dont mean you evilk)

My point is every country has a racist element both within and outside sport which of course is despicable and has no place in modern society.

But to single out just Russia is naive on the whole. Every country in the western world has issues both in sport and society with racism.

Plan was Adam out, Dunn in this week. VdV has thrown a spanner in the works and now it looks like a 4 point hit with either Kuyt, Arshavin or Nasri coming in for the Dutchman. Leaning towards Kuyt. Any reason not to do it?

Surely he won't be playing after starting tonight.... Players who play in the Europa League rarely then play in the league match at the weekend. For Man City that is...

I really want/need a City forward in the near future due to fixtures etc. but refuse to get in Tevez whilst he's one yellow from doom. Hope to god he get's it this week and doesn't explode (metaphorically of course).

no money well spend since there are very few midfielders still standing n defenders are not keeping many cs's...

great names but Torres has looked awful.
          Carrol has been wonderful.
high priced strikeforce but form must count for something

N'Zog obviously. MGP doesn't appeal at all - four goals, two from free kicks which were supposed to be crosses and a fair chance he won't score again this season. His four goals this season are the same as he has scored in two and a half years. He has less than one shot per match on average I believe. Total insanity to bring him in.

They are but N'zogbia carries the whole team. Anything they do is almost certainly going to come from him and he's a bp slut as a result. I wish I had him but Ethers fills my 5-6 mil midfielder spot and I'm obliged to keep him whilst his fixtures remain nice.

Who to keep in the team out of Cahill (che) or K. Jones (wig)? Also, Arshavin or Tevez as the big C? Cheers guys!
