Jamie Carragher’s 450th Premier League appearance was definitely one to forget last Sunday, with the centre-half suffering a dislocated shoulder in the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham. His replacement Sotirios Kyrgiakos may have been on the end of a rollicking from Carragher for being slow to get warmed up to replace him, but with the Liverpool vice-captain now reportedly sidelined for up to three months and a long-lasting calf injury still keeping Daniel Agger out of the running, you can be sure that the big Greek will be ready and raring to go in this unexpectedly prolonged run at the heart of Roy Hodgson’s defence.

It is the Reds favourable upcoming fixtures (AVL, new, FUL, blp, WOL, BOL) that make Kyrgiakos such a particularly alluring prospect. After a torrid start to the season Liverpool have finally -albeit at a stuttering rate- started to climb the Premier League table and Hodgson must surely see a promising pre-2011 run as the perfect opportunity to get their season back on course and draw a line through what has been a problematic year for the Anfield men.

At a colossal 6ft 4in, Kyrgiakos is always an aerial threat and has scored two goals in just six games so far this season, finding the net in both his Anfield league appearances. With the club still awaiting Fernando Torres’ bravura performance, Joe Cole having a frustrating period with form and niggling injuries and Steven Gerrard temporarily sidelined, they will rely on the lofty Greek to be a menace in the box at every given set piece.

Priced at just £5.1 million on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Kyrgiakos could be the ideal bargain defender to allow you to spend your budget on a big money move in midfield or attack. Also something of a Bonus Points magnet, he’s been awarded the maximum three points on two out of his five full appearances, which -considering the current lack of clean sheets knocking about- perhaps gives him the nod over similarly-priced team mates Paul Konchesky and Martin Skrtel for anyone considering Liverpool defensive cover.

His Fantasy ownership, a mere 1.1%, only adds to Kyrgiakos’ appeal, suggesting he could well just turn out to be the perfect “differential” over the next few Gameweeks as the season heats up for the Christmas period.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

As someone who's considering bringing in Kyrgiakos myself there seems to be a gaping hole in this article. Daniel Agger is expected back in a couple weeks so surely that'll put the greek lerch back on bench duty? Last thing I want is to buy another player who's a rotation threat.

there are some decent hints out there, e.g infavour of kyrgiakos: http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/latest-news/roy-s-captain-contenders

then this http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/latest-news/gerrard-set-for-toon-return suggesting agger will be back in full training 5 days before the fulham game (gw18). that could mean kyrgiakos only gets 2 matches, one of which he is ideal for (newcastle and carroll) the other he will likely get raped (young, agbonlahor and downing ruynning at him). in 2 years at the club under benitez and hodgson kyrgiakos has never played ahead of agger, only in the absence of agger.
but regardless of all thsi there is the glaring issue that agger is gay

I always hated the idea of making sporty out of which guy will lose their job first anyway that aside..
Nevermind the poxy carling cup, Grant should've been gone over a month ago. I'd be very surprised if he's still there by 2011.

Then there's all the media talk about Ancelotti... Which has slashed his odds and possibly made other managers' odds greater?

20-1 is tempting.. I'd stick a tenner on Hughes and my house on Grant.

anyone else thinking bardsley for a cheap defender option? i'm hesitant now that their back line lacks turner/bramble combo.

Right back, never seen him play. He left us when he was 16 to go to Pompey, he was linked with Man Utd & Liverpool at one stage. Anyway, we re-signed him in the summer.

how do you rate Morrison as an attacking threat? I'm playing Morrison over Jarvis this week?

Also how do you fancy WBA's chances of a CS this weekend against newcastle? I Have 2 wba defenders!

A game which normally produces a lot of goals, so I'd play Morrison over Jarvis but doubt we'll keep Newcastle out. I have Jara and I have him 1st sub if that helps.

Anyone looking at Balotelli? Good fixtures and a manager who loves him. Only 8.6 as well.

he's more drama than tevez, way too many other striking options ahead of him. i'd rather have a striker from a team that emphasizes attacking football and looks to score lots of goals. for 8.5 you can get bent who has proven himself and is on pens.

Much like Tottenham, they have a lot of decent and good players, but not as many top class players like Chelsea, Arsenal or Man United.

It's not much use having the best second string in the league if you've only got the fifth or sixth best first string.
