Wolves’ Kevin Foley has finally started to live up to the pre-season hype and jumps onto our Watchlist as a legitimate defensive option following a haul of two goals in the last three starts.

A right-back by trade, Foley was frequently pushed into the midfield last season to accommodate the emergence of Ronald Zubar. His versatility has continued to earn him midfield assignments this season, despite his “Defender” classification in Fantasy terms. In his most recent outing, Foley started on the right of midfield against Sunderland, before switching to a central role when Stephen Hunt entered the game. He took his goal clinically and also served several crossed balls to torment the Black Cats defence as Foley figured prominently as part of a more attacking Wolves approach.

In addition to his “out of position” (Oop) status, Foley has continued to demonstrate leadership qualities on and off the pitch; he was handed the captains armband in the absence of Karl Henry and spoke out to defend his manager Mick McCarthy earlier in the week. Foley has clearly cemented his role in the starting lineup then and his record of 14 starts from 15 far exceeds the nominal requirement of a beating pulse that is typically requested of any 3.9 FPL defender…

Foley’s recent run of form also finds him stepping up for Wolves at a critical juncture. It is not hyperbole, given their schedule, to consider the next 6 games as a make or break period for McCarthy’s men. To put it simply, Wolves must get results over the next six Gameweeks (bla, BIR, wba, WIG, liv, whm), as fixtures stiffen up considerably after that (CHE, mcy, LIV, bol, MUN, ars, BLP, TOT, avl).

While Foley’s recent goals and “out-of-position” status have garnered attention, transferring the Wolves man in at this time could well be a classic case of chasing points. Foley is far from a prolific goalscorer and the recent production could be little more than the fortuity of being in the right place at the right time; it is also unclear if he will retain his advanced position on the right of midfield or revert to a full-back role. Foley’s potential must also take into account the fact that the Wolves defence is hardly a popular horse to back. They have yet record a clean sheet this season and therefore Foley stands a regular risk of being docked a point for conceding 2 or 3 goals (as Wolves have done in 10 of their 15 games).

Owned by 14.2% of the FPL teams, Foley is currently seeing a mini-flood of investment due to his recent goals. In contrast, Danny Simpson of Newcastle – another 3.9 defender currently garnering regular minutes – is owned by only 2.0% of FPL teams. If you’re choosing between them, Simpson has no attacking returns in his 7 games since gaining a starting role, but Newcastle have at least recorded four clean sheets. Wolves have demonstrated strong attacking intent over the past few Gameweeks and, at a time when clean sheets are so hard to come by, let alone predict, the promise of attacking returns from Foley could be the deciding factor in his favour right now.

With game postponements becoming more of a concern as we head into a cold winter, both Foley and Simpson offer all we can ask from a 3.9 defender – a bench option who will play regularly and present some chance of Fantasy return when called upon in an emergency.

I think I might be welcoming David Silva to my team tomorrow night, along with David Dunn.

This could be a complete disaster, or a truly inspired choice.

    Hoping it's the latter.

I like Silva, but he has been like Luka Modric so far. Good ball skills but not quite in the right place at the right time for goals and assists.

For City to score 4 goals at Fulham, and for Silva to be on the pitch for the whole 90 minutes and do nothing, well that's criminal in my book.

Plus the Tevez/Malouda combo,(21.4M), is much stronger than the Drogba/Silva combo, (21.2M).

I will eventually end up with Tevez + Malouda. Only disadvantage of Sliva is that I would be tripling up on Citeh for maybe 3 weeks (with Drogba --> Tevez planned for next week).

Silva will go for VDV when he's fit.

Agree with the Fulham part, but I think it's only a matter of time before he produces. He has good fixtures, and it's a relatively short term option for me.

Either him or Bale, and there's something about 53% ownership that just annoys me.

My team for this week is

    Van der sar
    Vidic Cole konchesky
    Nani(c) nasri nzogbia Adam
    Tevez elmander Carroll
    Jussi Simpson Coleman fabs

Already done my free transfer Vdv to nasri but was thinking about doing either fabs to brunt or Coleman to Kolarov.
Is any one of them worth a 4pt hit or do I look strong enough as it is?

    Thoughts appreciated

Your team value is amazing. And you still have a decent rank with all those point hits.

Brunt is one yellow card away from suspension, so if you were to take a hit, I would do the latter.

I think get Kolarov, bench Adam.

So I still don't really know which way I'm going to jump this week. The question is should I switch Drogba out for Tevez. The obvious answer is "yes, why are you even asking?", but I'm really not sure. My league leader has Tevez so it's not much of a differential (although I know this works both ways), but his upcoming fixtures are so good. Then there's the suspension tightrope to add to the mix. I'm really tempted to hold onto Drogba for this week (at home to Everton doesn't seem that bad a fixture to me) and then see where I am next week, but maybe I'm just being over cautious. It would be a free transfer this week, but I'm tempted to save it so I have more flexibility next week. As a slightly different question, though, what do people think of:

Drogba out, Tevez in, worth it for a 4 point hit?

(I love how fantasy football gets me rambling to a mostly empty Internet at 4 in the morning :))

Probably not worth it. You just know that if you do, Tevez will have a 1 pointer after picking up the yellow that makes him miss the next match, and Drogba will hit a brace and an assist.

That's the thing, yep, especially the way all all of my borderline decisions have gone this season!

Plus I really like the luxury of two free transfers, it gives you that little bit more flexibility if things go awry.

Still can't shake Bolton's 1 clean sheet all season stat, though.

already used my free to get VDV out, Should I

Not C. I think NewC will score. Tough one as you have Def playing strikers(Hart vs Elmnder and Rio vs Adam) Jarvis's form away from home not to great. If you bring Pedersen, then it's foley vs Pedersen.

I will play Dann instead of Foley and bring Pedersen.

      D) Something else.

You have 4 playbale mids this week and £5m in the bank so I'd be looking to upgrade the striker position if I was in your shoes.

Gyan has Bent and now Welbeck to contend with so I don't think he's a reliable first choice striker.

You can afford to upgrade him to Tevez or Torres, both of whom have gorgeous matchups over the next 6 gameweeks.

I'm also not a fan of Jarvis, especially when he's away from home, so if you're looking to keep Gyan then I'd drop Jarvis for Nasri.

I'd also play my Birmingham defender at home, regardless of who the opponent is. Unless Foley scores he'll probably just get the usual "Eurovision special" of nil points for Wolves defenders.

I've had Foley all season and hes been shite.
Until the last few weeks. However you wouldn't have played him last week if you had him and would you really pick him above many others? He's a good bench player and you definately need players from other teams to bring in from the bench at times.

That's hash and also not true. I played Foley last week, out of choice, and also recommended to another poster on here that it would be OK to play him last weekend.

This week is not a good play for Foley as Wolves are away and the Albion at home will score goals.

Foley is a decent bench warmer who, at £3.9m, will get you a point (or 2 if you're lucky) and occasionally a goal. He starts every week so you know he'll contribute something if he has to come on as autosub.

Frankly, he's everything I need from my cheapie bench warming defender and I've been happy with him. He's not leaving my team anytime soon.

          Woah there chaps!
Lads look at his fist load of games! a load of old poo!
I do have him in my team so that is a pretty good vouch of confidence! 🙂
Finally he's started to show a little form although I worry that the goal he scored was just one that was due and will not get another for a long time?
Wolves seem to have lost the harsh defence from last season. Hopfully those cleanies will come back at Molineaux!

Will he fall though? Correct me if I am wrong: As I understand, he is currently protected and when the protection ends, his NTI/NTO will be reset and when he reaches the threshold again (after the reset), that is when he will fall. Or is it that he will fall when his NTO is reset?

I don't think MGP can't fail. and Blackburn are obv better than BP. Depends wether you've got a good amount of cash tied up in VDV. You'd expect in 2 weeks time he will be eased into games as there will be so many so it's a tough one.

I bought him cheap and I can see one game or 2 missing. I prefer chances on MGP scoring against Wolves that B'pool against Man Utd. MGP fixtures are excellent.

This weather is killing me : I bet Adam would be marvelous prospect in the upcoming doubles.

I can sell Barton instead, but its a tough one.

I must admit not to worried since I burned my fingers with Figeroa in Gw1! hehe

I try to do my own thing and not be influenced by the scoutpicks. Scout picks are no gaurantee. Just look at Gary Cahill(I was very tempted)

I can imagine Kolarov/Tevez/Berba/Gamst being in the picks.

Must say Im looking forward to the Festive Season games, although I always seem to drop in ranking even though I'm attending to my team. Others in my mini league do better over the Xmas period even though they leave their team unchanged.

OK some difference of opinion here then! My front 8 is:

        N'Zog - VDV (probs MGP) - Jarvis - Cahill - Nani
        Drogba - Elm - Carroll

Looking at that, maybe bench Cahill and play Elm and Jarvis?

I did Arteta -> Nasri as soon as I heard about his three-match ban. It gave me a good excuse to get rid of him. VDV -> Nani is also very tempting. They both, ie. Nasri and Nani, might very well score very well in the coming weeks.
