A lofty Serbian scapegoat of a striker endears himself to the Birmingham faithful by scuffing a winning goal against local rivals Villa to seal passage to the last four of the Carling Cup. The Baggies won’t be there to meet them however, they bounced out to Championship Ipswich, paying the price for a second string eleven by whimpering out to a 1-0 deficit.

The more illustrious backdrop of the Europa League meanwhile, saw Man City progress to the last 32 with a decisive victory and a brace for the emerging Mario Balotelli and some solo brilliance from the forgotten Adam Johnson…

Alex McLeish demonstrated his commitment to the competition by fielding a full strength side against Villa at St Andrews. Alexander Hleb missed out through injury, allowing Nikola Zigic to come in up front. Zigic once again failed to convince and was often the target for the home crowd’s frustration – that was of course before his late deflected winner. That goal could well buy him further opportunities to lead the attack, starting with the home clash with Spurs this weekend, although much will depend on Hleb’s availability.

Seb Larsson, the scorer of last night’s opening goal from the spot suffered what appeared to be a groin injury and he looks a likely doubt for the visit of Spurs. Craig Gardner, the crowd favourite who was greeted with a warm welcome on a freezing night when he replaced Lee Bowyer on the hour-mark, could well profit with a start as a result.

Gerard Houllier also put out, what is for him right now, a strong side. Ciaran Clark, Barry Bannan and Jonathan Hogg were once again given opportunities in an inexperienced midfield, keeping the likes of Robert Pires and Simon Ireland benched. Gabby Agbonlahor returned to lead the attack with Carew ousted.

Ashley Young picked up his fifth booking of the season in last night’s game and will miss the trip to Anfield this weekend – a major blow for Houllier’s men and a factor that surely boosts Liverpool’s clean sheet potential for the Gameweek. James Collins picked up his fourth booking and is one yellow away from a ban.

Barry Bannan also picked up a groin problem with Houllier revealing that will go into the weekend as another possible absentee.

Roberto Di Matteo’s approach to their Quarter-Final at Ipswich certainly differed to the Baggies’ Midland rivals. The Italian fielded an array of second string players including Boaz Myhill in goal, Abdoulaye Meite and James Hurst in defence, while Steven Reid and Simon Cox also earned opportunities. From a Fantasy perspective there was little to gain from the teamsheet or performance; West Brom were disappointing but it seems unlikely to impact on their showing when Newcastle visit at the weekend. Fantasy Managers will at least have been pleased to see the likes of Chris Brunt and Peter Odemwingie rested here – they looked nailed-on for starts at the Hawthorns against the Magpies and will surely be the protagonists in attacking terms.

Mario Balotelli’s brace grabbed the headlines in the 3-0 Europa League win over Salzburg. City put on a strong performance with the Italian striker looking a menace throughout – his goals, form assists from Pablo Zabaleta and Patrick Vieira – will further boost his reputation and he is undoubtedly on our radars as an alternative to Carlos Tevez for City’s forthcoming run of kind opponents.

The bulk of Roberto Mancini’s post match comments were not surprisingly reserved for Balotelli…

“Mario can play better than that…I am delighted with the goals he scored but he can play better. The fact that he didn’t celebrate is just him. It is normal for him to score. He does it every day. I think he can run more, take more of his chances and choose different options sometimes when passing. I know there is more to come.”

Adam Johnson was also on the manager’s mind after he staked a claim for a regular starting role with a superb solo effort for City’s third. Mancini was happy to acknowledge Johnson’s contribution but once again, couldn’t resist playing down the winger’s ability…

“They [Johnson and Balotelli] could become among the best players in the world, strong players. They need to work hard all the time. They both scored fine goals but they must carry on…In years to come Adam may look back and think ‘Roberto was correct’. I hope that he knows I say these things because I believe in Adam.”

Whether Mancini beleives in him enough to hand him another start at the weekend is doubtful; Johnson could well find himself back on the bench for the visit of Bolton, as Mancini seems set to draft David Silva back into his starting XI having rested him against Salzburg. The likes of Aleksandar Kolarov, Gareth Barry, Nigel De Jong, Vincent Kompany, Joe Hart and of course Carlos Tevez, are all set for recalls against the in-form Trotters; all were rested in last night’s game. Balotelli could well be a doubt for City with reports of a slight hamstring problem.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thing about Balotelli is he's liable to do something daft at any stage of a game and get suspended again, sod him. Bannan looked like class I thought tho.

The thing I like about Balotelli is he gives Kolarov a lot more assist potential.

Has anybody experienced problems with the fpl website while using firefox?
When I go to look at player stats the window does not open properly. I just get the top and bottom bars and cant even close it. It works ok in explorer but its a pain in the swiss using explorer for that site alone.
    Thanks

Think it is something to do with the Java Console add-on. I uninstalled all the older versions and just left version 15 and it works OK now.

He could have his feet up by the pool in LA rather than travel half-way round the world to help our bid, as he did for the Olympics. Beckham is pure class.

If Russia don't win, it will be entirely Putin's fault.

Tbh, I'm not sure it suits Putin at all if Russia get the bid- I think he may just have realised this at the last minute and desperately tried to sabotage the bid.......

The vice priminister for Russia actually did very well. His emphasis on FIFA giving "help" and the comparisons to South Africa were the kind of things that will appeal to the FIFA execs who will like the idea of it being them who is responsible for the developmnts that would happen in Russia - the vp was cleverly humble in that respect, something that Putin would not necessarily be able to do.

Agreed. England had to establish some kind of legacy for FIFA to give them the competition and they did that very well.

Also liked the "footballers hosted by footballers" bit saying that the national teams will all be alloted a English club to look after them during their stay - nice touch, but wonder which poor suckers will get hosted by Plymouth!

Think Blatter's differing comments on the bids were interesting:

      England: "excellent presentation" "remarkable"
Russia: "Interesting presentation" "different facets of Russia"

Really need some advice.Team is in a mess:

      Foster,Krul,
      Bramble,O’Shea,Coleman,Jara,D.Collins,
      Nani,VdV,Cahill,Adam,Barton,
      Drogs,Tevez,Elmander.

Even without VdV’s injury I had enough on my hands with that horrible defensive melange.I brought Bramble in for Elmo since he has been an ever present in Sunderland's defence but incredibly he got injured. Now I have only two first choice DFs,Jara and D.Collins, with Coleman losing his place as well.So what do I do?Bramble/O’Shea->Kyrgiakos and VdV->Nasri for a 4 pt. hit. Will it be worth it?Or should I just do Bramble/O'Shea->Kyrgiakos to save the hit and play both Adam and Barton in MID this week?

Alright, but you sure it'll be worth it?Because I took an 8 pt. hit last week to bring VdV and Elmander in(early transfers!) as they had both put in 15 pointers the previous week but they both did shit last week.So if the 4 points going out are for no reason,I might just as well do Bramble->Samba/Kyrgiakos or whoever and then change VdV next week.

Ok so this is my team:

          Hart | Foster
          Konchesky | Vidic | Kolarov | Coleman | Jones
          Bale | Nani | Jarvis | Barton | Cahill
          Drogba | Carroll | Elmander

Now for the subs, those I'm considering benching are 3 of the following:
Coleman: Is hardly 1st team player, and up against Chelsea away
Jones: Blackburn are not keeping many CS and Wolves score often
Jarvis: Although a good prospect, still away to Blackburn
Barton: Could do well but only just returned to the team
Cahill: If any Everton player scores it will be him, but its Chelsea
Elmander: Scores away like no other, but its ManC and I got 2 ManC defenders

          Who would you pick?

Both could be a good shout, equally there is risk attached to both. I decided to stick with Tevez from Man C with a view to bringing Kolarov in next week. I figured Tevez is the spearhead and likely to be involved in a high proportion of City goals and the defence has great clean sheet potential nearly every week.

Lennon could be a good shout now VdV is out?

Looks good. Agree with playing barton over a defender. Don't personanly like the idea of doubling up on Man City defenders so would drop Boateng.

Captain Torres, he looked great against Tottenham.

lol- Cameron clearly doesn't have a clue about football, but it's important to show political will (hence Mandela for South Africa)

It was also amazing to see Fergie and Wenger united- that alone should win us the bid! 😉

Cameron watches quite a bit of football. In their old age Fergie and Wenger have softened their stance to each other.

Though I think the whole Fegie/Wenger situation has only softened because arsenal haven't been a serious threat to us in a while.....

          Thoughts please

          2 Vdv to MGP (4pts)
          3 Vdv & Dempsey to Nasri & MGP (8pts)
4 Nothing (VDV might come back next week)

Hold your fire dude, I don't think it is worth taking a hit this week when so many games could be called off as a result of the weather.

Latest news is that VdV may be back from injury sooner then anticipated.

More injury news no doubt will continue to wing its way towards us in the next 2 days.

Nasri owners now anxious about their investment, although it looks like he'll play this weekend though.
This is why you never make your transfers until Friday night. I did mine early last week and paid the price (bought in VdV before I knew he'd gotten injured). Its never worth the savings you think you'll make to get a player in early in the week.

Wenger said he has a knock but should be ok, or something like that.

              It's on the tweets
