Sunday brought contrasting fortunes for the North East contingent as Sunderland climbed to seventh in the table courtesy of a narrow win over struggling West Ham. Rivals Newcastle, meanwhile, continued their miserable decline as they were brushed aside by an impressive West Brom at the Hawthorns. Here’s the notes on Sunday’s events…

Steve Bruce opted for a bold Sunderland formation, fielding what appeared to be a fluid front three with Asamoah Gyan, Danny Welbeck and Darren Bent all given starts. Welbeck spent a lot of the early stages on the flank but when Bruce switched his role with Gyan after the half-hour mark, it immediately transformed Sunderland’s fortunes. Gyan provided the cross for Jordan Henderson’s winner on 34 minutes and then proceeded to clip the bar minutes later. All three look set to hold their starting roles for the trip to Fulham next time out.

That strike from Henderson was his first of what has been a strong season for him individually and, incredibly, the only goal from a Sunderland midfield player this season. It earned Henderson his first maximum Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game Bonus Point haul, taking him onto 8 for the season. The goal and performance were the perfect response to recent claims from Steve Bruce that Henderson required a rest period having started all of Sunderland’s league matches. Bruce was quick to play up the possible effect of his previous comments in his post-match analysis

“I just put it out there that it might be time for a rest and the way he trained all week it was impossible for me not to play him…He must have read it and been influenced. He was desperate to play and trained for the last few days as if to say please don’t leave me out”

The clean sheet was Sunderland’s seventh of the season – only Chelsea and City have notched more. Nedum Onuoha remains a popular pick within the Black Cats’ defence and he rewarded investment with an additional 2 Bonus Points to complement his clean sheet as provided an overlapping threat on the right flank. This week’s “Spot The Differential” candidate Phil Bardsley, arguably provides stronger value at left-back however – covering Sunderland’s defensive returns for just 4.4 in the FPL.

The defeat leaves West Ham without an away victory since the opening day of last season. Frederic Piquionne, West Ham’s form player in the win over Wigan last time out in the league, was surprisingly dropped to the bench to make way for a Carlton Cole/Victor Obinna pairing, with Kieron Dyer also returning from injury to claim a start. Jonathan Spector held a midfield role following his two-goal exploits in midweek as Valon Behrami missed out with a hip injury.

Earlier in the day, Newcastle’s 3-1 loss to West Brom left them with just 2 points from a possible 15 since the 1-0 win at the Emirates in Gameweek 11. You can read more on Newcastle’s current plight further in yesterday’s Knee Jerk. Much has been made of Chris Hughton’s inquest into the defeat and the Magpies boss has succinctly summed up his side’s current problems as twofold. Unfortunately for him, they are conceding goals and scoring goals…

“There are two areas we need to improve. One is being defensively good enough to not give them the opportunities to score goals, and the other is creating ourselves.”

Peter Odemwingie demonstrated his worth at just 5.1 in the FPL with his fifth and sixth goals of the campaign. The Nigerian was a climber in last week’s Watchlist rankings and is set for a further push when we refresh these tomorrow. Chris Brunt also justified his inclusion in the Scout Picks this week with his ninth assist of the season for Somen Tchoyi’s curling opener. The Cameroonian looked impressive having been handed a starting berth by Roberto Di Matteo; he may start attracting interest if he can cement a starting role but at 5.0 in the FPL, it’s hard to opt for him over the influential Brunt who is available for 5.6.

The late strike from Peter Lovenkrands, assisted by the 50% owned Andy Carroll, wiped away West Brom’s clean sheet late on. The Baggies have not kept a clean sheet since Gameweek 2 when they edged out Sunderland at the Hawthorns.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

This may be the first week that I am almost 100% satisfied with my team for the week.

    Foster (Robinson)
    Ridgewell, Huth, Baines (Hutton, Cashley)
    Nasri, MGP, Nani, Cahill (VDV)
    Elmander, Welbeck, Berba (c)

    What do you guys think?

I think Berba (c) won't work. But it's your decision, who knows...

And for me it's the opposite: it's the week from which I have the worst expectations this year... Most players play away, those who play at home play either against Chelsea, Arsenal, or Liverpool. Ah, and I don't have subs. It's gonna be a disaster for me!

Well, my captaincy is DEFINITELY NOT firm as of now, also we have a CL week so we don't know if anyone will get injured (knock on wood).

I will look at my captain again nearer the end of the week. Berba is just looking likely after his previous performance, obviously...

Is it me or have they just added this to the rules? I remember the other paragraphs in there but not this one. Either way, it's never an assist.

"If a goalkeeper does not have control of the ball and parries a shot or drops a cross or the ball rebounds off the woodwork, the attacking player shooting or crossing the ball receives the assist if a goal directly ensues."

It's all part of the bizarre conspiracy in this country to convince everyone that Bale is the best player in the world, rather than just a very good winger 😉

How could all the crazy hyperbole be justified if his assists column reads 1 or 2 assists in 16 games?

Don't talk about him in terms of the FPL, just use your eyes. I saw Baines create the goal for Beckford at the weekend but he got no credit for it, well maybe a bp. There are anomalies with stats and particular FPL points.

Agreed, but it doesn't make that particular instance an assist. If any old cross, corner or shot that happened to be turned in at some point after being cleared was an assist, I'd have a team entirely made up of corner takers. Bottom line is the ball was cleared poorly, then tapped in. No assist.

Ferreira. It was embarrassing, but Bosingwa won't be able to do any better. I thought they were both pathetic on Saturday, Pienaar and Baines absolutely tore them apart.

Rafa got slated for not doing anything to counter Bale in the second leg, and I just hope that we do something, or else he'll run riot. Maybe Ramires playing out on the right and doubling up on him...

55% of people have someone who's only done well in two games this season...

    Why oh why?!

If your on about Bale, maybe it's because he's the 6th highest scoring midfielder and is a good price.

There are loads of midfielders with a better PPG and are cheaper...

        Brunt, MGP, N'Zogbia etc.

Out of those, N'Zog is the only one id rather have

I hear you but I bottled it this week when presented with all those players as ultimately I trust Spurs to score more, against anyone.

"If Bale can score 19 goals in the San Siro, surely he will do it in the Prem more often" is always nagging away.

I would have gone Brunt if it had not been the 4 yellows.

          Already regretting Bale.

No way was Foster the only person to touch that...

How else would it go back in exactly the same direction it came when Foster was trying to punch it out of danger...

      Grrr...

F##k that. How that's an assist for Bale but Etherington didn't get one for Whitehead's goal a few weeks back I'll never know. At least Ethers intended to pass the ball to Whitehead, Bale was looking for Crouch.

I have Bale in FPL and while I'm glad for the points, I just saw the supposed assist and I agree that it's bollocks.

How the f*ck is Ridgewell 5.9? If it weren't for one 13 point week, he'd have the same as Dann, who's 1.1 cheaper.

Brum defender at that price is scandalous.

Ridgewell is the biggest goal threat of all Brums defenders. He almost scored against Spurs.

Yes, goal threat undoubtedly, but 5.9 is too much for him, considering the price of Johnson, Dann and Carr.

Tevez has to be sub as suspended. Def agree with Jara, but hopeful Fabs will be back. Surely Cahill>Bardsley given fixtures?

Have noticed since I stopped taking point hits that the green arrows have been appearing....stuck as to who to use my free tfr on this gameweek so all help is much appreciated.

    Foster
    Evra, Coleman, A Cole
    Etherington, Malouda, Nani (c), Nasri
    Carroll, Odem, Drogba
    subs: Barton, Jones (blackburn), Skrtel

Do I use the tfr or roll it over? Want to lose Malouda but fancy Chelsea and Utd to both win next week....
