Sunday brought contrasting fortunes for the North East contingent as Sunderland climbed to seventh in the table courtesy of a narrow win over struggling West Ham. Rivals Newcastle, meanwhile, continued their miserable decline as they were brushed aside by an impressive West Brom at the Hawthorns. Here’s the notes on Sunday’s events…

Steve Bruce opted for a bold Sunderland formation, fielding what appeared to be a fluid front three with Asamoah Gyan, Danny Welbeck and Darren Bent all given starts. Welbeck spent a lot of the early stages on the flank but when Bruce switched his role with Gyan after the half-hour mark, it immediately transformed Sunderland’s fortunes. Gyan provided the cross for Jordan Henderson’s winner on 34 minutes and then proceeded to clip the bar minutes later. All three look set to hold their starting roles for the trip to Fulham next time out.

That strike from Henderson was his first of what has been a strong season for him individually and, incredibly, the only goal from a Sunderland midfield player this season. It earned Henderson his first maximum Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game Bonus Point haul, taking him onto 8 for the season. The goal and performance were the perfect response to recent claims from Steve Bruce that Henderson required a rest period having started all of Sunderland’s league matches. Bruce was quick to play up the possible effect of his previous comments in his post-match analysis

“I just put it out there that it might be time for a rest and the way he trained all week it was impossible for me not to play him…He must have read it and been influenced. He was desperate to play and trained for the last few days as if to say please don’t leave me out”

The clean sheet was Sunderland’s seventh of the season – only Chelsea and City have notched more. Nedum Onuoha remains a popular pick within the Black Cats’ defence and he rewarded investment with an additional 2 Bonus Points to complement his clean sheet as provided an overlapping threat on the right flank. This week’s “Spot The Differential” candidate Phil Bardsley, arguably provides stronger value at left-back however – covering Sunderland’s defensive returns for just 4.4 in the FPL.

The defeat leaves West Ham without an away victory since the opening day of last season. Frederic Piquionne, West Ham’s form player in the win over Wigan last time out in the league, was surprisingly dropped to the bench to make way for a Carlton Cole/Victor Obinna pairing, with Kieron Dyer also returning from injury to claim a start. Jonathan Spector held a midfield role following his two-goal exploits in midweek as Valon Behrami missed out with a hip injury.

Earlier in the day, Newcastle’s 3-1 loss to West Brom left them with just 2 points from a possible 15 since the 1-0 win at the Emirates in Gameweek 11. You can read more on Newcastle’s current plight further in yesterday’s Knee Jerk. Much has been made of Chris Hughton’s inquest into the defeat and the Magpies boss has succinctly summed up his side’s current problems as twofold. Unfortunately for him, they are conceding goals and scoring goals…

“There are two areas we need to improve. One is being defensively good enough to not give them the opportunities to score goals, and the other is creating ourselves.”

Peter Odemwingie demonstrated his worth at just 5.1 in the FPL with his fifth and sixth goals of the campaign. The Nigerian was a climber in last week’s Watchlist rankings and is set for a further push when we refresh these tomorrow. Chris Brunt also justified his inclusion in the Scout Picks this week with his ninth assist of the season for Somen Tchoyi’s curling opener. The Cameroonian looked impressive having been handed a starting berth by Roberto Di Matteo; he may start attracting interest if he can cement a starting role but at 5.0 in the FPL, it’s hard to opt for him over the influential Brunt who is available for 5.6.

The late strike from Peter Lovenkrands, assisted by the 50% owned Andy Carroll, wiped away West Brom’s clean sheet late on. The Baggies have not kept a clean sheet since Gameweek 2 when they edged out Sunderland at the Hawthorns.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Disgraceful decision from Ashley.

Just when it looked like Newcastle were going to have some much needed stability.

Make that a hattrick, together with a brace from Handsome Dirk and one from the Greek in a thumping 6-0 win (all three to assist each other's goals of course).

Painful thing bis that would put me on an average gameweek my score being so bad at the moment!

Don't understand why he would be protected but his trnasfers in/out are fairly stable so, if he were to drop, he'd have done so by now - so getting him in should be risk-free, cash-wise (obviously not injury-wise though...). Would have thought more would be bringing him in, considering his fixtures.

Wow, was not going to post on here, but Hughton fired WTF?!? A couple of bad games after a great result Vs Sunderland and Aston Villa. Who will take over?

Also, I dropped from 7,800 to 8,900 after that Bale assist (Which I was saying yesterday that it was), wasn't expecting to drop that much. I think I might get him back in, if thats the effect he has when he scores well its a bit worrying, especially seeing as he is a very good player IMO.

Holy Santa Claus' Sh!t that was a long read. Im all for it. Tottenham always concede, and drogba has a good record against them. Can you really see Chelsea not scoring? If they do, he will be involved. I agree with you, he could score big this weekend. Whats the point in having Tevez on the bench, when you have the money to easily get him back in. Why do you have to take a 4 point hit though?

Im going to do it, even if it does involve a 4 point hit. Drogba always destroyed Gallas when you played us. What do you think about not having Nan until after the Chelsea game? I want to stay loyal and just play Nasri & Arshavin.

I used mine last week after three red arrows in four weeks and I'm feeling 20 years younger.

Squad looks all fresh and shiny and I've caught up nine points on mini-league leader (just four behind now) and jumped from 141k to 75k, with Kyrgiakos still to play.

So long as there are a fair few changes you want to do (four or more, I'd say), go for it.

OK Mark has had the Bale assist clarified by the FPL.
Foster got the last touch on the ball and because Ridgewell didn't divert it, that is why the assist was given. I'm just the messenger here, I need to see it again.

Then that's fair enough. Didn't look like an assist when I saw it first, but if the ball doesn't touch Ridgewell, then it has to go down as a cross that's been spilled by the keeper. Doesn't matter what the circumstances are, the player that crossed the ball has to get the 3pts.

      Bugger.

even if it does touch ridgewell it's an assist unless that touch "significantly alters" the direction of the ball. i don't see this as being that controversial, i certainly don't get the hysterics.

That true. Frosm corners and crosses you are not attempting to score a goal but to assit another player. But when Carrol wacks it against the keeper from 6 yards out, his intention is to score and not assit another player, needs to be looked at me thinks!

when you create rules you have to think through the implications. in carroll's case yes it's obvious - in most cases it won't be. let's look at a common scenario: there'sa player through on goal, he could shoot near post or far post, he knows that shooting far post increases the likelyhood of a save rebounding to one of his team mates, he hits it far post, keeper saves, winger follow up and scores. he was trying to score, but he was also trying to assist, how would you decide whether to give the points or not?

the rules we have are subjective enough, why would it be better to create more ambiguous ones. that's not just chucking the baby out with the bathwater that's chucking the baby out and keeping the bathwater.

I am not aguing against your reasoning here but you say in carrols situation its obvious (in regards to intentionality) so do you believe that he deserved the assist in that instance? I am presenting this implication as being a good reason to alter the defintion of what an assit is.

would lovenkrants have scored if carroll hadn't shot? FPL aren't interesting in a philosophical debate about the essence of an "assist" - they're only interested in rules that are workable, and considering this is a silly free game on the internet that seems a very sensible position for them to take. "intentionality" is irrelevant in the context of FPL unless you can legislate for it, which you seem to have accepted you can't, without just guessing.

You know - I think you're right. The third replay (at about 2:26) is the clearest. Foster only gets the slightest of touches. The rest is all Dann - 'significantly deflecting' the ball back to Bassong.

It makes a mockery of the assist system if a player can get an assist for a cross beign cleared away. The rules state if there's a significant change in direct - Foster punches it back the way it came!

I had Damien Duff last season when his cross took a nick off a player and was finished off by someone (Elm?) and because of the small nick, Duff got nothing. Makes no sense at all.

The rules have to be clear - and, as much as possible, they are. If it hits goalkeeper or goalframe on the way to the goalscorer it's an assist - if it's a team-mate, it's their assist, but if it's a defender then it's not so clear - we need to get a protractor out.
