Chelsea’s slide continues as they suffer a late defeat in Marseille, while at the Emirates a nervy 3-1 win is enough for a subdued Arsenal to progress, but only as group runners-up, paving the way for a potential meeting with Spain’s big boys.

Elsewhere, there’s news on the fitness of Steven Gerrard and Michael Dawson, while, in between ice baths, Rio Ferdinand’s been busy on Twitter again…

Those clinging to Chelsea’s Fantasy assets could find little to comfort them from the 1-0 defeat in Marseille. On an emotional night for Didier Drogba, he failed to show a glimmer of renewed form or confidence and his current malaise typifies Chelsea as a whole right now.

Although already through to the last 16 prior to the game, Carlo Ancelotti’s concern on his side’s current slide will deepen further after last night’s performance. Although denied a couple of penalty appeals, Chelsea were in the main, second best to their French opponents.

“The performance was not so bad defensively where we had a good control of the game but we could do better up front. We had a lot of opportunities to do counter attack but we didn’t do so well with the final pass or the final shot.”

The lack of attacking prowess is a worry for Ancelotti given the strength of his lineup last night. Nicolhas Anelka and Ashley Cole were rested but the likes of Salomon Kalou, Florent Malouda and Micheal Essien all started, along with Drogba. Elsewhere Josh McEachran came into the midfield with John Mikel Obi rested with a Champions League suspension looming.

Mikel will return to the lineup for the visit to Spurs this weekend and Ancelotti remains hopeful that Frank Lampard will join him in midfield. Jose Bosingwa is out of the weekend clash however – he limped off with a hamstring injury and has already been ruled out by Ancelotti. That will mean Paulo Ferreira, who started at left-back last night, will fill in on the right of the defence – a possible concern given that Gareth Bale will be in opposition. John Terry suffered an ankle knock and was also subbed last night but this is apparently not a concern for the Spurs game.

Arsenal endured a nervous night at the Emirates, ultimately running out 3-1 winners but not before visitors Partizan had conjured thoughts of an unthinkable Champions League exit with an equalising goal. In the end, a spot-kick from Robin Van Persie and second-half goals from Theo Walcott and Samir Nasri proved enough to see the Gunners through, but only as runners-up in their group.

Arsene Wenger made three changes to the lineup that saw off Fulham at the weekend – Robin Van Persie’s start as skipper was the most notable change – significantly he played “in the hole” behind the striker as the in-form Marouane Chamakh kept his start. Elsewhere Denilson came into the midfield for Jack Wilshere while Kieran Gibbs replaced a sick Gael Clichy at left-back.

From a Fantasy perspective all the interest surrounded Van Persie. He took on penalty duties here, relieving Samir Nasri as expected. That, and Van Persie’s role at direct free-kicks will dent the Frenchman’s potential, although Nasri’s form is surely strong enough to maintain interest and prompt further investment for now.

Van Persie’s role and the impact on his Arsenal’s team-mates is a key factor to look out for however. Last night’s decision to play him in support of Chamakh didn’t appear to work and Wenger hinted after the game that he will be rethinking his options here…

“I was not completely happy with our offensive game tonight. But I will have to watch that again. Maybe it was down to the quality of Partizan’s defending because I felt they defended in a very intelligent way and very well. I will have to analyse that a bit better.”

Wenger’s options in attack remain plentiful and it’s significant that Walcott again had to emerge from the bench to make an impact; he continues to struggle to hold down a starting role and the emergence of Nasri in a central role and Wenger’s loyalty to Andrei Arshavin, are certainly limiting his chances. If Wenger looks to pair Van Persie with Chamakh in the mid-term, Walcott looks set to remain a bench option.

Arsenal came out of the game without any significant injuries although Kieran Gibbs suffered yet another set-back. He sustained an ankle injury and Wenger has already ruled him out of contention for Monday’s game…

“He has a twisted ankle, an ankle sprain. I don’t know how damaged his ankle is – he will have a scan tomorrow. He is unbelievably unlucky. No [it is not the same ankle he injured recently], it is the right one tonight. I spoke to him, he is quite down. He is on crutches. I cannot tell you more. We will know tomorrow but he is already out for Monday night.”

Clichy will surely make a return at left-back then, while it appears unlikely that Cesc Fabregas will make reappearance in midfield. The big decision for Wenger could well be whether to start with Van Persie having handed him 90 minutes last night. A 4-5-1 formation would seem a likely scenario for the clash with United, and that could well give an opportunity for Walcott to earn a start out wide, with a remit allowing him to drift inside to support Chamakh or Van Persie.

Steven Gerrard looks odds on to return to the Liverpool lineup for the visit to St James’ Park. Roy Hodgson now faces a dilemma when it comes to accommodating his skipper following the emergence of Raul Meireles. Lucas has also performed well while Gerrard has been sitting in the stands and that may well see Hodgson relegate an unfortunate David Ngog to the bench at Newcastle, restoring Gerrard in a support role behind Fernando Torres.

Michael Dawson completed 90 minutes and scored in a in a 4-3 friendly win over MK Dons yesterday. The big defender has been on the bench in Tottenham’s last two games but is clearly edging closer to a first start – it’s unsure whether he will displace Sebastian Bassong alongside William Gallas for the clash with Chelsea; that looks unlikely.

Rio Ferdinand is expected to make United’s clash with Arsenal on Monday. The defender has been undergoing ice bath treatments to accelerate the recovery process after suffering a tight hamstring in Tuesday’s Champions League draw with Valencia. Ferdinand has kindly given us an optimistic view of his injury on his Twitter feed…

“Hammy feels OK, treatment over the next couple of days to try and get ready for the game on Monday. Get me out there!”

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

It's not going to put me off, there'sstill a decent chance he will be back and Liverpool looked good going forward vs Villa.

He is still a better option that Drogba imo.

    Morning guys,

    My team is currently

    Carson (Mignolet)
    Coleman Konchesky Jones (Enrique, Kolarov)
    Nani Nasri Bale Cahill Barton
    Elmander Drogba (Tevez)

    £2.5m in bank.

I'm pretty set on Drogba -> Torres this week.

I am very aware of my keeper problem, trust me! The problem is I always seem to have more pressing transfers. Do I bite the bullet and wait until a week where I have no pressing transfers to sort my keeper crisis or do I take a hit, spend some of my £2.5m and bring in a good keeper for Mignolet. I know 4 point hit for a keeper won't work out this week but might do over time?

    Any advice welcome...

i'd go along with your thinking rath, you know as soon as you drop thr drog he'll go and score a hat trick though! he's staying in my team one more week till i get tevez in.

i based my goalkeeping strategy on having two half decent goalies and rotating them as and when the fixtures suggest, ive got foster and robbo, west brom have some half decent fixtures ahead of them so carson is ok, perhaps swap mignolet for gordon whose 4.5m??

    Bosingwa --> ? with 6.9 to spend...
Too bad I can't get Baines... looking at Onuoha, Huth, Hangeland...

I've been looking at my team and its weak links and have identified Enrique/G Cahill - Samba - next week
Ferguson - time for an upgrade to Nasri or Van Der Vaart
Drogba - could this be the week to ditch?
I'm thinking of getting Rooney in for Drog. Any thoughts? Is that a good move? Torres just doesn't convince me re injuries/Liverpool and I can just sense that Man Utd are about to go on one of their fixture proof winter runs and I'm going to want their penalty taker for that.

I like my new LibDem Mp as well though, she was recently embroiled in an alleged council tax fraud scandal involving the DJ Andy Kershaw living in her flat. Now that's a proper cool scandal.

almost exactly my conundrum this week. I'm leaning towards ditching Drogba. It took me ages to ditch Malouda and I haven't missed him a bit. I certainly wouldn't have missed Drogba this week. You have the same front three as me and I'm seriously thinking that now is the time for rooney. Frees up yet another 1m as well.

I think with forwards form is crucial. rooney looks more likely to score goals and with Lampard coming back Drog's penalty pts are gone. It's a tough decision to make but Drog is now down to the price I got him for, so the money lost argument that stopped me ditching before is gone.

Nah, not a fan of having 5 expensive point scorers in midfield because prefer to play 3 up top (apart from this week!).

Might just upgrade Simpson, but then again they might sort Liverpool out ... Ah f**k it, I'll decide later!

why are people getting torres for drogba this week when drogba can easily get the same amount of points as torres. both players have yet to light up away from their respective home grounds.
Torres is injury prone, so why this week?

chelsea and drogs are on a bad run + LIV have nice fixtures to come. It's never easy to get rid off your premium players, but Torres could be worth the risk. I think it's more likely for Torres to outscore Drogs this week than the other way round, but I often guessed wrong...

How come Van Persie can just waltz into the side and start taking all the penalties and free kicks?
He's not better at it than Nasri or Arshavin.

Rooney or Torres for the next 5 gameweeks?

I need an extra £'s though. Not too sure where to find it any suggestions or thoughts on:-

    a. Downgrade Evra to Rafeal
    b. Downgrade Evra to Samba
    c. Downgrade Evra to Kyrgiakos

    Current Team:

    Robinson, Carson
    A. Cole, Konchesky, Evra, Kolarov, Dann
    VDV, Nani, N’Zogbia, Bale, Nasri
    Elmander, Carroll, Tevez

Marouane Chamakh may be 'in-form' but he doesn't half look rubbish when you watch him.
Anybody see Houlliers comments after losing 3-0 to Liverpool?
"If I have got to lose 3-0, I would prefer it to be to them as I like Liverpool."
Someone is in a little bit of trouble. Surely a two horse race for who is next sacked between him and Ancelotti? With any luck Villa will poach Pardew away from Newcastle and we'll be able to get a half decent manager.

    Malouda VDV Nani N'Zogbia (Jarvis)
    K Davies Carroll Drogba

In terms of contrasting players. think arsenal will score so i'm considering benching vidic. would have been worried about carrol v pool but it's chaos up there and with gerrard and torres returning fancy a comfortable pool win. see goals either way in spurs and chelsea too

    Good morning Vietnam.

    Cole, Carroll, Konchesky, Dann

    One has to sit.

I feel like Chelsea has the smallest chance of keeping a cleanie, but cole is capable of scoring fantasy points regardless.
Im worried about sitting konch or carroll, if newcastle scores, odds are carroll will be involved, if they dont, then no Konch CS. Maybe I should hedge my bets and play both instead of trying to guess which will happen.
Dann at wolves. Ive watched Dann sit on my bench with 6 or more points a few times already this year, as Birmingham has kept much better competition without a goal. However, it feels slightly less painful to have a substitute without a blue star next to their name, like Cole and Carroll.

    Help
