Liverpool play out a drab stalemate with FC Utrecht in their meaningless Europa League tie, as Fernando Torres remains benched and Joe Cole remains ineffective. Elsewhere Frank Lampard is upping his preparation for the weekend clash with United and Birmingham appear to have at last found a suitable role for Nikola Zigic…as a training aid…

Roy Hodgson employed a 4-4-2 system with Ryan Babel and young Nathan Eccleston paired in attack. Elsewhere the Liverpool lineup was suitably second-string – with Martin Skrtel the only regular first-teamer in the back four, while Jovanovic, Poulsen, Shelvey and Cole made up a midfield – all players who remain on the fringes of Roy Hodgson’s starting XI.

Fernando Torres was left on the bench then, despite Hodgson publicly promoting the possibility of a start for the Spaniard. Hodgson later revealed that he had been convinced by medical staff to keep Torres out of the action in preparation for the weekend fixture with Fulham…

“I had a vision of Fernando going out there, having a great 45 minutes, it being good for his confidence, maybe scoring a goal and giving him a little lift. I was only going to play him for 45 minutes. He didn’t play against Aston Villa and he was quite looking forward to playing. But when we sat down and we started to talk about it again, it seemed to me the disadvantages or potential disadvantages far outweighed any potential advantage.”

Hodgson was also questioned on the form of Joe Cole, who again disappointed having started the night out on the left flank, but switched inside behind the striker in the second-half. On a night which missed the flashes from Torres, Cole failed to capture the limelight and continues to struggle at Anfield. Hodgson had this to say on the Summer signing’s form…

“He sets himself high standards, he plays on small margins, he’s an honest lad and I’m sure he came off the field thinking, ‘That wasn’t the performance I wanted to give. I’m better than that and I can do better than that. It was just unfortunate he was unable to show that tonight but it certainly wasn’t for a want of trying or through a lack of effort or desire. It didn’t go his way and that can happen with front players.”

Cole is likely to find himself on the Liverpool bench against Fulham then. Indeed, aside from Skrtel, it’s hard to imagine any of last night’s side making an impression on the teamsheet. Steven Gerrard remains a doubt for a return against Hodgson’s former club. The Liverpool boss revealed yesterday that his skipper was still a risk…

“Steven Gerrard is not fit and will be touch and go for Fulham. He is training every day and training harder than anyone. But we have to be careful there is no risk of the injury reoccurring”

Frank Lampard will step up his fitness ahead of the weekend clash with United by taking part in a behind-closed-doors match today at Chelsea’s training headquarters. Lampard came off the bench at Spurs last weekend but looks certain to be in Carlo Ancelotti’s starting lineup for the Stamford Bridge meeting with United. Lampard’s return will likely see Florent Malouda return to a left-flank position having been forced to play a deeper role in recent weeks.

Gerard Houllier’s unsettled relationship with his players continues with reports of Richard Dunne, John Carew, Habib Beye and Stephen Ireland all given a run-out with the reserves in a behind-closed-doors match yesterday. Houllier dropped stand-in skipper Dunne to the bench for the much-needed win over rivals West Brom at the weekend. It remains to be seen if he and the likes of Carew and Ireland figure in the manager’s plans for the trip to Wigan on Saturday. It looks unlikely. Nigel Reo-Coker also got a run-out in the game as he continues his quest for fitness following injury.

And finally…Birmingham’s Roger Johnson has apparently used team-mate Nikola Zigic in training to help him prepare for the confrontation with Newcastle’s Andy Carroll at the weekend…

“Obviously Ziggy is a big lad, which puts you in good stead to face someone like Carroll.”

Johnson is still likely to find the actual clash with Carroll a shock to the system, unless of course Zigic has suddenly mastered the art of actually winning a header and hitting the target in training.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Fabregas gets injured too much, I personally think Nasri is probably the safer bet.

I have Nasri, and I'll keep hold of him for a bit, but I probably wouldn't buy either at this moment in time. The fixtures aren't that great after Stoke, though to be fair they are the exact type of medium-difficulty away games in which the Arse have excelled so far this season.

Fabregas: Is a major injury doubt and has 4 yellow cards hanging over him. He still has great performances in him, e.g. Bolton and Braga, but you clearly need to hold off until after he gets fit/suspended.

Nasri: The problem here is that Fabregas will be around enough to take away from Nasri's returns. I worry about Nasri being out on the wing, I must admit. Plus, with all the midfield options that Wenger has, do you think that Nasri will start all four games over the Christmas period? My personal prediction would be no.

You're too late getting onto this, for now. I would do other transfers for now, then look at a Chelsea midfielder in Gameweek 20.

Wait on that decision. Fabregas presence might affect Nasri's point output, and there will likely be so many good midfield options, that Nasri risk becoming a second string option all around. If many of the big guns start firing however, Nasri MIGHT just be a good alternative. Thus: wait on this one, and improve elsewhere.

Ha, not a flippin snowballs chance in hell, why on earth would he leave Barcelona, they have financial challenges facing them like any club, but he is as happy as Larry at that club, and is an integral part of that team.

That being said, I wonder if a player doesn't want to go, can the club still ship him off regardless, like if he point blank refuses to leave? This feels like a really stupid question

"It remains to be seen if City can complete one of the most ambitious transfer coups in recent times by bringing Iniesta to Eastlands.

But they usually get their man."

Tell that to Kaka and John Terry.

Iniesta isn't worth 100m, it's just that to entice a big player to the Wastelands they've got to pay 3 times the value.

Have been looking how to shoehorn Vidic into my side after this week and its proving difficult. Seems pointless to sell Cashley as after Le Arse he has three in four at home against favourable oppo. If Tevez doesn’t play on Monday it may be easier to do but I’m hoping he plays as people may have jumped ship too early on that front. May have to leave it until the WC mind, even though he may be .3 more by then.

I’m not convinced by El Nino at present but I’m figuring that he has the potential to go nuts in his next four and that’s what this game is about, jumping on before the big points haul not after so feel I may plump for him this week.

Good reasoning, I think you're right that the time to do Cashley to Vidic is gone. I'm also not convinced by Nando but I've brought him in because like you say - the potential is there and it's a calculated risk.

I would have done the Cole to Vidic transfer earlier but planning goes out the window when you have more pressing issues unfortunately! United have pretty good fixtures though which is annoying. Having said that the oppo they do have are more than capable of scoring so I may have to just cross the fingers and toes and hope!

Good scoring Stilicho, very consistent. I’m trying to claw my way back up and keep the average going. Long way off yet but hopefully an El Nino hatrick helps towards that..

I wish I had Vidic too but like you say there's always someone getting injured that needs sorting out, just gonna havbe to hope they start shipping or a cheaper route into their defence emerges.

There is Rafael and Rio, but Rio’s fitness is always a question mark and I bet he misses a game over the Christmas period due to the proximity of the games and Rafael? He’s by no means nailed on despite the recent upturn in his game time. That’s my two penny worth anyhow! Plus neither can match the attacking threat of Nemanja so he is definitely worth the extra money – Its just finding it!!

I have come to the same conclusion. ACole OUT Vidic IN might be both waste of a transfer, and a slight case of points chasing. I would rather be looking at a Konchesky OUT Rafael IN kind of deal.

They come from my hometown and pretty much supported every band in the Brighton area when I was a youngster. I've seen them more times than I care to remember. There was a much better folkrock band at the time in Brighton though called McDermott's Two Hours. They were really good.

    Need advice!

    Got the following squad:

    Foster(Jaaskelainen)
    Toure Kolarov Samba (Simpson Distin)
van der Vaart Nani Cahill Brunt Jarvis
    Drogba Berbatov (Piquionne)

    3.2 in the bank.

    Leaning towards doing either
    Berbatov -> Torres
    or
    Cahill -> Fabregas

    Any advices?

It doesn't really matter how many points are on your bench as long as the people you're playing are scoring more. The bigger problem for me is the home/away rotation but with the wildcard coming up i really don't see it as that much of a problem.

Well that was kinda my point about the wildcard. I'll be making changes in about a month so having "this dilemma every single week" really isn't going to last that long

Plus there are plenty of teams with back-to-back home games coming up so in fact your point is arbitrary at best

My point is not arbitrary in the slightest, it pertains precisely to your question. Home games or no, you have to bench a strong player every week and you will not guess right every time.

lol you say it like you'd prefer to have a bad player so you can bench him every week.

Sure you're going to get the odd decision wrong but it's still better to have a player get say six points and have someone on the bench with eight points than it is to have two average players scoring twos and threes. Anyway like i said, the wildcard is imminent so none of these are long term problems

I prefer to have my cash on the pitch and no selection headaches. A cheaper player on the bench means a more valuable one on the pitch, it's a perfectly logical equation:

Good player on pitch + Bad player on bench, or as you prefer it - Average player on pitch + Average player on bench.

lol and who are my average players? If the likes of Lampard, Gerrard, Fabregas and Arshavin had been racking big scores then maybe you'd have a point but they aren't and so there is no need to have cheap midfielders/defenders to compensate.

From looking at your team you have Barton/Cahill and i have Dunn/Brunt. Not really too much difference there. I also have Torres, Tevez and Carroll like you so the only "cash on the pitch" you have over me appears to be Ashley Cole who has picked up 9 points in 5 weeks! Great value there...

Morning Gents, fed up of those red arrows so wanted to ask for expert advice on my team.

    Foster (Hahnemann)

    Vidic, Kolarov, Jagielka, Jones, Williamson

    Cahill, Nani, VDV, Nasri, N'Zog

    Drogba, Elmander, Carroll

    2.2 in bank

For transfer this week thinking of either:

    1) Williamson - Konchesky (and captain Nasri)
    2) Drog - Torres (c)
    3) Jag - Konchesky and Elmander - Bent (and captain Nasri)

Re Elmander for Bent trade, I am thinking the same trade but wonder which one of the Sunderland forwards is the best bet. I am leaning towards Gyan or even Wellbeck over Bent. Any thoughts on the Sunderland trio would be highly appreciated. I'd trade Jag for Onuoha or Mensah.

I had a look at stats and heat maps from the last few Sunderland games and I'm starting to think that Gyan is the better option. He had about 5 shots (one hit the crossbar) to Bent's 1 against West Ham and has an average position way higher up the pitch than Bent. Although Bent will probably be on pens. Gyan is also such an exciting player to have in your team, so I might have to take a punt on him this week 😛

I'm going to spin off to my team here and ask if I should get rid of Piquionne for Gyan and bench one out of Cahill/Baines?

Thx mate. For sure Gyan over Piquionne. I even like Obinna down the road. Needs a bit more consistency, but I'm thinking debating b/w Obinna v. Wellbeck as my budget options. My forwards are not Torres, Elmander and Balotelli. I'm cutting Elmander this week and will give Balotelli another chance + to avoid 4 point hit. I'm thinking Gyan+Rooney over the two GW span or possibly Wellbeck + Rooney.

      cheers guys.
if i don't go down the nasri/fabs route, it means i can get a liverpool player, and they have better fixtures. the one drawback is its liverpool, and they always dissapoint!

Having said that, he buggered it up last year at home to Stoke for me.. Missed a pen I seem to recall. He won't be on them this time I wouldn't have thought so lightning couldn't strike twice there (unless RVP sits out).

That he is. After losing at United though I'm thinking he will start after having a solid week of training behind him..

I'll wait and see what Mr Wenger says today/tomorrow.

Why is the watchlist has A.Cole in it when it misses Vidic?

Apparently because Rafael is there as MU defender. If you don't have Rafael, then I think you can place Vidic in his spot. Having both may not be a good idea now.
Cashley is there for the same reasons - best CFC defender.

+1 I was going to go for him but am seriously tempted to hold off a transfer this week to (a) see how Torres plays (b) see how much pitch time RVP has and (c) to have 2 freebies in advance of Christmas rotation nightmares 2010

If VdV is playing (and the game is on!!), who do I bring him in for?!

    Foster (Carson)
    Vidic Kolarov Konchesky P.Jones (Coleman)
    Nani Nasri Bale (VdV Ferguson)
    Rooney Tevez Carroll

1: VdV aplys and comes in for one of the above
2: VdV doesn't play and is shipped out for Brunt

Then who does Brunt come in for, Vidic/Carroll/Jones?!

    Cheers

I wouldn't bother this week Shoot see how much of the game he plays if at all, and if there's any reaction after. I'm a big VDV fan but have brought in too many half fit players this year.

Bit of a dilema: I'll probably want to play the Xbox on Christmas day, but I imagine the TV will be on all day, and the TV goes through the Xbox.

Any ideas? Borrow another Xbox? Wake up really early?

Get a 40 inch TV solely for the Xbox like I did 3 years ago, Fifa never looked as good!

Why would you borrow another Xbox? Then you have two Xbox' with no TV to play them on.

No no, I have 2 TVs, but there's no aerial in the front room, so it streams from the PC to the Xbox.

so there's a 50" in the front room with the Xbox, and the 32" in the bedroom with the PC.

But to watch TV in the front room, we need the Xbox. I wanted a TV with picture in picture so I could play games at the same time as watching TV, but even that wouldn't work here.
