With defensive injuries stacking up, Steve Bruce’s Sunderland will be looking to combat their frailties at the back by scoring plenty of goals at the opposite end of the pitch. Darren Bent’s proven pedigree is set to spearhead much of the team’s attacking play as they look to build on their current position of 7th in the Premier League.

Looking at Sunderland’s upcoming fixtures (BOL, mun, BLP, BLA, avl, NEW) you would expect the Black Cats to feel confident, particularly ahead of the Stadium of Light encounters; Bent surely looks likely to add to his 7 goal tally for the season over the Christmas period.

Fantasy Mangers will be considering their attacking options right now as uncertainty looms over the troubled Carlos Tevez and Dimitar Berbatov attempts to edge back into the United starting lineup at Stamford Bridge. Wayne Rooney and Fernando Torres are yet to ignite and look somewhat of a gamble, so, as Fantasy Managers hunt for a guaranteed goalscorer to complement the mid-price potential of Andy Carroll and Johan Elmander – Darren Bent stands out as a strong option.

Priced at £8.6 million in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Bent is far from unobtainable at a time when many Fantasy Managers have cash to burn as the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Rafael Van der Vaart and Frank Lampard limp back into the reckoning.

The form of Danny Welbeck and Asamoah Gyan is a consideration and will keep Bent on his toes. Indeed, Chairman Niall Quinn has only recently commented on the competition for places up front…

“Danny Welbeck’s put a spanner in the works, and it won’t be long before Fraizer Campbell’s back from injury. He was on fire this summer, and we thought he’d have a really good year. It’s healthy competition, and hopefully all four of them can bounce off each other for the next few months, and we can have a strong finish to the season.”

But with Welbeck able to operate on the right-wing and Gyan often benched, Bent’s position as the club’s principal striker has been established and he should be considered an almost dead-cert to be in the starting XI.

With a stuttering International career for England, blighted by bad luck, Bent will be hoping to build up some decent form going into the next batch of Euro 2012 qualifiers in the New Year. He could be the perfect reliable source of points over Christmas, as Fantasy Mangers look to bring some stability to their lineups in an unpredictable season.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

I kind of agree. But despite recent form, the price just goes to show how consistently good the originals are.

I’m planning on getting Rooney or Torres in for Elmander, I need an extra 1million though. Not too sure where to find it any suggestions or thoughts on:-

    a. Bale to Brunt
    b. Bale to Yaya Toure
    Robinson, Carson
    A. Cole, Konchesky, Evra, Kolarov, Dann
    VDV, Nani, N’Zogbia, Bale, Nasri
    Elmander, Carroll, Tevez

"you don't know what it's like to be me, no-one understands me, I'm so unhappy, blah blah, blah".

Album after album of the same self absorbed crap, and then once in a while he releases another Slim Shady album where he makes fun of famous people for a bit.

And he sounds boring and nasal too.

Well, I know I've heard Lose Yourself, but they all blur into one song. Toy Soldiers was good, but it was the hook I liked.

Anyway, someone like Jackson Browne is a great lyricist, it's not hard to make a bunch of words rhyme.

Eminem has no ear for cadence, he just spits rhymes in a monotone unending drone, and there's no subtlety or hidden depth to his words.

Basically, if he was an author he'd be Dan Brown.

Half of Blueprint 3 is good, half is R&B filler. And even though he does well with collaborations, he has moments of genius, and then goes back to run of the mill averageness.

Exactly. He's really not good at looking on the bright side. Either that, or he's just cottoned onto the fact that it sells, and he can basically turn a handle and produce music-by-numbers and people will still buy it.

            Which is more likely.

Just can't understand why he's so revered. Sense of identity? Become a goth or grow up.

Good year for hiphop and RnB in my book, but I don't think the Eminem one contributed that much to it.

Loved Kanye's album, Kid Cudi, Dessa, Big Boi, Janelle Monae, Cee-Lo and some others. Good year for me musically regardless of genre actually.

    Robinson
    Ridgewell, Samba, Kolarov
    Pederson, Cahill, Nani, Brunt, Bale
    Drogba, Carroll

With Foster, Piquionne, Vidic and Cole on the bench.

Well I had planned to get rid of him for Tevez this weekend, but after everything that's happened it doesn't look like I'll be going ahead with it!

There were definitely some encouraging signs from the Spurs game. He actually looked interested in trying for the first time in about 2 months!

No, I do think he'll start, I just don't particularly fancy transferring him in, for a point hit, in the current circumstances.

Yaya and Kolarov will be enough Citeh coverage... I hope. 😕

I read on TotalFPL that Tchoyi could be deployed as a striker in the next game. Would make him uber differential if so. But out of that lot, Nzog has to win. He steps on pitch =1 bonus, he assists = 3 bonus. He always has a couple of good attempts on goal in him each game.

Cahill > Samba if you have to do one.

Drogba > Torres looks good this week, but the week after, Torres has the dreaded BPL (a) which could be postponed, and from then onward, Drogba and Chelsea's fixtures ease up, so it's a straight forward contest between Chelsea and Liverpool, and there's only one winner in that one...

Brunt instead of VDV who will possibly only play a part game. Onuoha at home, playing Simpson as preference in an away game makes no sense.

Need big help. Current team is:

    Robinson Carson
    Kolarov Kyrgiakos GCahill Baines
    Park Nasri Nani Brunt Cahill
    Rooney Torres Piquionne

I want to get either Lamps or Fabregas in for week 20 and there is 2 ways i can do it:

    For lampard:
    Nasri - Gamst Pedersen
    Cahill - Lampard

    For Fabs
    GCahill - Givet
    Cahill - Fabregas

    Thoughts?

        get fabregas

the most over-priced out-of-form FPL player (next to injury-hit lampard)

        no thanks

what you on about? obviously you are not gonna put an injured player in your team. do you now have to say after each post 'providing he's fit?'

I just keep thinking that with a good run of fixtures for chelsea and their talisman back, they'll do well. What do you think?

    Good article Mr. John Finlay.

I've had Bent for 2 gameweeks now and I was starting to feel a little twitchy. Nice to have a little reassurance in the form of a Watchlist article.

It's worth noting however that his form has not been great especially in the two games I have had him (WH,fu) where he only got the customary 2pts and his performances weren't exactly eye-catching. He surely can't go through this Xmas period without at least a few goals? His penalty taking makes him far more appealing than Gyan and Welbeck even if it is at an extra cost.

I've had him that time too and agree, he hasn't filled me with confidence.

If Welbeck and Gyan play he end up sharing the chances and possession up front.

      Pens is the saving grace

Why are people wasting transfers , swapping one fit striker for another makes little sense . You know that one you take out will score more points anyway,

Could be posponements injuries etc , much better to keep one for next week

Having a hunch that Torres might go berserk isnt good enough reason imo
