The Watchlist player rankings have been updated for the Christmas period.

The table can be found in the bottom right corner your frontpage and represent our current ranking of players based on form and their fixtures over the forthcoming Gameweeks.

The update is dominated by the return of two heavyweights, as Tottenham’s Dutch playmaker Rafael Van der Vaart and Man City’s settled skipper Carlos Tevez, blink back on the radar as major considerations for the Gameweeks to come.

Joe Hart holds the top ranking in goal, with three home fixtures in the next five Gameweeks enough to see him keep United’s Edwin Van der Sar at bay. Pepe Reina falls to third then with his Boxing Day fixture at Blackpool in doubt. Sunderland’s Craig Gordon is the high new entry – presenting strong value at just 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League game. Expect another climb for him once this weekend’s Old Trafford trip is out of the way.

Aleksandar Kolarov climbs to the top of the Defender rankings – despite defeat against Everton on Monday night, the Serbian should enough attacking intent to warrant his ranking. Leighton Baines’ form has him remain in the top five and has him climb to second, with Liverpool’s Sotirios Kygiakos dropping to third. Again it’s Sunderland presenting the value here – with Phil Bardsley remaining in our top five.

Chelsea’s Ashley Cole is slowly climbing back up the rankings and could push the top five once the trip to the Emirates has passed. Below him, both Ryan Nelsen and Carlos Salcido are new entries to represent the Blackburn and Fulham defences – Fulham in particular, have fixtures that could see the Mexican and team-mate Brede Hangeland, pick up some profit over the next six Gameweeks.

Nani keeps the top spot amongst the Midfielders once more – his forthcoming fixtures should allow him to maintain that position for a few more weeks at least. Rafael Van der Vaart is the big threat though; the Dutchman is back in contention for Harry Redknapp’s side and has fixtures ahead of him that present the opportunity for him to maintain his impact on the Premier League.

The rest of the top five remains intact with Gareth Bale holding off the charges of Cesc Fabregas, while Frank Lampard’s return to the Chelsea midfield also promotes Florent Malouda. Chelsea’s fixtures after their Boxing Day clash with Arsenal, should give Malouda the opportunity to regain some form.

Carlos Tevez arrives back in the Forward rankings and topples Fernando Torres to second, while Dimitar Berbatov is the big climber – ousting Darren Bent for third spot. Wayne Rooney, Didier Drogba and the in-form Danny Welbeck are all on the rise this week. Expect further a further climb for the 5.1 Welbeck once this Gameweek has passed – the Sunderland striker is ineligible for the trip to Old Trafford.

The Watchlist will be refreshed once more ahead of Gameweek 21; there may well be a few tweaks along the way but we will alert you to any updates as they occur over Christmas.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

i'm just worried about how much it weakens the rest of my team...would be something like:

        al habsi, foster
        foley, jara, kolarov, shawcross, bardsley
        nani, adam, fabregas, lampard, n'zogbia
        carroll, tevez, berba/bent

        defence obviously the worry...

not sure about starting lineup for this weekend. dont think i will make any transfers. 2 transfers will be very handy in this climate!

    Foster
    Ferdinand, Kolarov, Baines
    Nasri, Malouda, Jarvis, Nani, MGP,
    Drogba, Elmander

    Subs: Krul, Simpson, Carroll, Konchesky.

Not sure at all about who to captain! Will probably go Nani. Might transfer out Krul for another keeper but not sure who rotates well with Foster. I Know hahneman does but Wolves cant really keep clean sheets. Maybe Robinson or Gordon ?!

I keep switching between the two, think Nani is more dead set for points so safer option, 13% odd have Rooney, 42% have Nani, safer to go for Nani unless you have to take some risks with a big lead in front of you

Is anybody thinking of wild carding early? I know that the consensus on here has been to delay it towards the end of january, to take advantage of the DGW, but I was thinking that a lot of people (mostly those not on this site) will push the button at the earliest opportunity. This could push prices sky high. And so plans at the start of the transfer window may be too expensive by the end of the window. Also the earlier you take your wildcard, the earlier you can get your team lined up as you want it. What do yous reckon?

I think its been proved from wildcards played before that they don’t have a massive impact on the transfer market

Also, I would say there are a lot of managers who aren’t even aware that there will be a January wildcard

looking at next couple of gameweeks. Would probably be the midfield transfer this week and the forward GW20 but which is the better combination.

VDV & Torres in for Nasri and Elmander or
Gerrard & Bent in for Nasri and Elmander.

    Team is linked.

I'm a fabregas man myself and as much as I loved his show against Fulham, I can't see him doing too much in his next three games. Class player but too many others around him to also threaten points now RVP and fab back.

VDV appeals as he dominates every setplay but was looking at the Gerrard Bent combo simply based on Gerrards set piece dominance and Sunderland having two of the easiest home games available in terms of goals.

Looking forward to boxing day. Nothing better than sitting down to watch Jeff with 7 games on! Delightful.

Why do some players like Stanislas never drop in price? It looks like they should have done so weeks ago.

oh - and a supplementary question...

My midfield is Bale, Nani, Fabregas, Nasri and N'Zogbia.
I intend on bringing in VDV this week or next. Which should be transferred out (I guess out of Nasri and Bale)?

But I thought the price would still go down if the % hits the threshold. Is there a minimum price a player can go to?

I am thinking of maybe saving my transfer this week if the weather doesn't mean more mass postponed games (unless I decide Elmander is out of form).

I think that because so few people own him, his price is effectively frozen, and the 10% threshold rule for a drop no longer applies.

Milijas was over the drop threshold for ages this season and then finally fell in price after having a positive NTI every day for a couple of weeks, which doesn't seem to make any sense. So the only explanation is that players need to have a certain number of owners to 'activate' them.

That would make sense, otherwise 1 person jumping off could make a price drop happen.

I still got Bosingwa in my squad, and I can't find ant news about him.

Should I save the transfer and hope that he returns to the field for their "easy" games following the Arsenal match?

Or would you dump him now for Rafael?

This Christmas dilemma drives me nuts.

Is anyone considering captaining Baines? In GW17 I had him captain until I chickened out to Etherington who only got me 4 points when I could have gotten 18 from Baines.

    Pros:
    - Set pieces, crosses
    - Birmingham are 3rd worst goal scoring team in PL
    - Strong form
    - Home game

    Cons:
    - Hard to captain a defender
    - Arteta back
    - A goal conceded and it's all over

For me Everton are just too much of a jekyl and hyde team. They can be incredible or woeful, and fixtures never seem to offer much insight as to which team will turn up.

Baines is obviously a quality player, and worth having. I just wouldn't trust him with the armband til i'd seen a bit more consistency from them.

      imo imo etc

I think this game against Chelsea is an absolute must win for Arsenal. They really have a point to prove against the top teams and will be out to prove they are contenders. Massive game for them and i can see them edging it.

      The script:

Drogba bullies Koscielny + Squillaci and scores in the first half. Arsenal dominate possession, Chelsea are content to sit back and so Arsenal create virtually nothing. Chelsea then hit Arsenal on the break, at least once, towards the end of the second half, and we win, again.

Because Chelsea have a good run of fixtures coming up, and if they want a chance of winning the league it's essential they turn their form around sooner ratehr than later.

Keeping him til now and then getting rid would be a bad idea imo.

        Hmmm

        1. Arguably ManU have a better run off fixtures
        2. Drogs to Rooney free up a mil to strengthen other areas.
        3. ManU are also trying to win the league
        4. Drogs is dropping in price to the point I will start making a loss
        5. Rooney is rising in price

It's up to you i suppose. At the end of the day nobody knows which will turn out to be the better buy. I jsut still don't think Rooney has shown much to suggest he will start scoring like he was last season.

The main point for me is that you're talking about trasnferring one player who isn't scorign well yet for another who isn't scoring well yet. Ifyou do it and then Drogba hits form, are you gonna be kicking yourself if he bangs in a hattrick?

Given the uncertainty isn't it better to save a transfer and then do it another time if Rooney starts to play a bit better? Another point is that man u are winning games and scorign goals, but Rooney isn';t scorign many points. Once chelsea start winning games and scoring goals you can guarantee that Drogba will be instrumental in that.

It's a tough decision, i just know i'd be kicking myself if i waited this long and then missed out when Drog went mad.

If you sell a player for a higher price than you paid, then a sell-on fee of 50% (rounded up to the nearest 0.1 million) will be applied on the profits. For example, if you buy a player for 4.2 million and when you transfer him his value is 4.5 million then you will only receive 4.3 million.

You must have bought him in Nov when he was 7.8

He has increased in price since then to 8.4, so the total profit is 0.6

            50% of 0.6 is 0.3

            So you sell him now and get 7.8 + 0.3 = 8.1

Anyone struggling with choosing between Arteta or Fabs or Gerrard?.

Cesc could be worth a punt with a decent run of games comingfor Arsenal after Chelsea- might even do well considering how awful Chelsea have been defensively the last few gws.

Arteta is who I really want, but Moyes and his awful tactics haven't helped Arteta much this season. Everton have winnable games coming up and someone has to play in Cahill's hole once he leaves.

Gerrard seems to be the only one consistant enough to take for liverpools run of home fixtures

For Liverpool, yes. Who else even plays decent week in and week out, besides Lucas this season?

Torres is a train wreck, waiting to come off early or miss the match outright, never mind the fact that he's not scoring goals when he actually plays.

Gerrard puts in 90% every game for them, only N'gog plays harder for Liverpool imo.

Besides the stats saying it's true, Gerrard is (was) one of the best midfielders in the world over the last 5+ years.

I remember Torres well, because I'm an athletico fan, but his loss wasn't a big deal. He has fantastic talent and is capable of great skill, but he just isn't and has never been one of the top 5 strikers in the world imo.

He has never even been the best striker in Spain, at any time. Nor the best in the EPL. If I had to rank Strikers, I don't think he would be in the top 10

His form is so good that I wouldn't personally want to get rid of him.. Sure he'll lose penalties, but he's scored the majority of his goals this season from open play. And Arsenal's fixtures are good in the medium term anyway.

5 home games in the next 9, and the away games are at Wigan, Birmingham, Newcastle and West Ham.

And with all the little niggles that VDV has had this season, it wouldn't be much of a surprise if he was rested for a couple of games in the next few weeks with the congested schedule.

Harry likes to start VDV but will rarely finish with him - no evidence as yet in Harry's behaviour to say that he won't start every game, however the injury vs Liverpool may change his thought process. Agree on Nasri, though - Arsenal will rotate more now they're nearing a complete set of midfielders.

      2. Tottenham's fixtures look good. I'd do this if you don't have Bale already.
      3. Get Nani in and keep Cahill.
      4. Yep, good move.

You can make your decision over a few weeks.. you don't need to make all these transfers at once. Cahill will be gone by the new year so I'd keep him 'til then.

          A. Cole --> Kolarov
Bale --> Nani (VDV needs to prove his fitness after his injury so I reckon Nani's the best bet here).

When Cahill is gone, do Cahill --> VDV.

good move i reckon. i sold bosingwa, malouda and drogba some weeks back and i don't regret it at all. chelsea have been leaking goals like nobody's business and i expect their trip to the emirates to be in-keeping with that trend.

    Benitez probably sacked at Inter.

Complaining of lack of funds for transfers. Broken record.

If I had him I think best option this GW is to captain Berbatov.
