Man City’s 1-0 win over Blackpool at Eastlands encapsulated everything that has been wrong with the Christmas and New Year Gameweeks. While the match itself will likely go down as one of the season’s best, it delivered frustration in the extreme for Fantasy Managers.

Hat-trick hero Mario Balotelli made a mockery of any opportunist investment following his strikes against Villa by missing the game with a knee injury, then, once the game kicked off, the irritation levels just escalated.

Carlos Tevez, sporting the Fantasy Premier League armband from many of his owners, fluffed a first-half penalty and then seemingly went out of his way to deny us any chance of compensation. Tevez missed an abundance of chances – even managing to lose his footing in a slapstick style, having rounded keeper Richard Kingson with the Blackpool goal gaping. He’s ruined the first Match of the Day of 2011.

For those who doubled up on City’s raiding left-back Aleksandar Kolarov, the pain was magnified further. The Serb, so prominent in City’s attacks in his last two starts for Roberto Mancini’s side, felt the wrath of his manager as he continually wasted possession and opportunities to deliver telling crosses. On 58 minutes Mancini had seen enough and Kolarov was subbed – just two minutes before the 60 minute cut-off for a clean sheet.

The City situation is just becoming annoying now. Potentially a rich source of attacking and defensive points, the options to rotate and tinker available to Roberto Mancini are beginning to bite hard with the full-back situation summing up the current plight. Short of taking the plunge with Joe Hart or the unfashionable and expensive Kolo Toure, it’s looking impossible to find a secure option in a defence that has now kept 10 clean sheets, the best total in the league. I’m expecting to see Kolarov miss out at the Emirates in the week now, with Pablo Zabaleta presenting a safer option for Mancini at left-back. Who can really say when we will see the Serb back in the side, let alone cement his starting role.

As for Tevez, I’ll forgive today’s crimes with the prospect of plenty of points from him in Gameweek’s to come, but I can’t help but think that his fortunes over the past three Gameweeks epitomise the suffering of the Christmas period – 16 points on Boxing Day, rested the Gameweek after, zero points with golden opportunities missed today.

Fantasy Managers have been reluctantly riding a Gameweek roller-coaster of late, and very few of us have managed to get off the thing smiling. Tevez and City certainly delivered one hell of drop today.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Team linked guys:

    Do I need to get rid of both Cahill and Carrol for a 4 point hit? I'm thinking of getting rid for either Malouda/Campbell or Brunt/Berbatov. If its not worth a 4 point hit, which one out of Malouda, Campbell, Brunt, or Berbatov should I get in this week?

    Im not sure i agree that using the wildcard for gameweek 24 is the best. Im leaving it till last week possible.

    We all got time to prepare for gameweek 24 without needing a wildcard. For example i already have

    Nani and Berb for und
    Tevez johnsone for liverpool
    Varney Adam for blackpool
    Nasri arsenal

    That the nucleas of what everyone will be using their wildcards to buy for that week anyway. I still time to add a couple more double gamers to that list.

    Contrast the last week of wildcard where all those who used in r24 will have lopsided teams due to dgws , those of us who use it on last week will have well balanced sides goign forward

      Really?

      I crafted a team aimed for GW 24 that's balanced and flexible.

      Fabianski, Begovic

      Rafael, Skrtel, Bramble, Evatt, Jara

      Nani, Van Der Vaart, Gerrard, N'Zogbia, Adam

      Tevez, Berbatov, Torres

      Fabregas comes in the week after for Gerrard, or I might just get him right away if Liverpool are still looking crap.

      Up front, Torres can be switched for Drogba readily if Chelsea start hitting form. Or I could go Lamps and RvP if Fabregas gets injured.

      Defense is tailored for the double fixtures, with flexibility in mid price choices like Rafael offering alternatives such as Bosingwa, Dawson, even Kolarov again if he holds down a starting place.

      I can't see any weaknesses, and it's still quite clearly a WC taking advantage of the GW 24 fixtures.

      5 in the MUN game
      N'Zog for Wigan
      3 Liverpool

    By the time I went to bed my score was looking like another disaster to go with the 18pts from last GW. Thankfully Nasri and Fabregas rescued my GW and the handy BPs to Tevez and Adam also gave me an average score (46pts). It shows what a fickle game this is.

    Glad the transfers of Salcido->Bardsley and N'Zogbia->Adam (4 pt hit) worked out for me.

      Is it always this time of year causing problems with getting a full team on the park? I thought I had a solid team and now Krygiakos and Kolarov are looking decidedly dodgy. Nani and Carroll are injured - but there are always going to be players that are injured and I'll probably stick with them. (or at least wait for more info re: Carroll). When/how to use the WC will be interesting. Pretty hard to predict at this stage.

        Thanks. I could easily switch Kolarov, but I think the above is the more logical for now. I'm annoyed that I let my defence get in such a mess. My fault (although in my defence I am still learning) for going pretty cheap early.

        I don't think I am going to go more than the 1 Liverpool player despite the Double GW. Skrtel and Adam will be it for the GW22 one.

            Assuming I decide to keep Carroll on the bench until he's ready to play, I'd say that after the transfer above (Krygiakos->Skrtel), I'd say Kolarov might have to get the chop. Elmander might be a bit of a worry, but I can put up with him until the WC.

            I think the WC will be a matter of tweaking the team for the rest of the season than massively focusing on DGWs. Maybe a couple of players that have good runs afterwards too that can be transferred back out at leisure in the following month.

              Flexibility is the most important thing.

              If you can change your team around fluidly, it's a good one.

              It's kind of hard to explain, but having a few top, top priced players makes transfers from position to position easier, and looking having players in flexible price brackets (i.e. Rafael who has Bosingwa, Dawson, Skrtel, Kolarov all around the same price) makes the team good for any occasion.

                Good thinking. I have 1 expensive mid (Fabs), 3 mid-priced (Nani, Nasri and VdV) and one cheap (Adam) - although it is quite possible if fixtures are right to switch Nasri (for example) to N'Zogbia. So, I think my money is fairly well spread, where it wasn't originally - so one of the things I have learnt for my 2nd season.

    Begovic / Gordon
    Bardsley / Kolarov / Rafael / Coleman / Evatt

    Torres / Odemwingie / Rodallega

      Current goalies don't rotate well.

      I'd recommend Fabianski - Begovic (my choice), Gordon - Krul, Schwarzer - Al-Habsi. Reckon Foster and Birmingham are done for, and they don't rotate well with anyone either.

      Up front needs work too.

      Odemwingie is seriously short on confidence. He's missed loads of chances. Rodallega is sort of short term too. Try and fit in some heavy hitters. Tevez, Drogba, Berbatov, Rooney. You need two good strikers minimum. I'd recommend lowering on Nasri and just choosing/rotating between Gerrard and Fabregas.

      Flexibility is also an issue with your team. With funds tied up in midfield you'll struggle to upgrade your strikers.

      Look to get captaincy material in there too for the double gameweeks. Rooney or Berbatov highly recommended.

      Kolarov, 4 points, + WOL GW23

          Kolarov will go eventually since he's a rotation risk, but in the short term, it really might be better not to take a hit.

          Looking at the straight pros and cons. There is value in holding onto Kolarov until GW24. He'll surely play against Wolves at home right?

              I don't have any Liverpool coverage...

              They play two away games sandwiched by a cup game against ManUtd.

              It's tough for them, and there will be rotation. Add on the fact that they're in pretty awful form, and I think it's fairly safe not to have Liverpool.

        Had Arshavin & Chamakh for ages. They did quite well but dropped them once they started getting rotated. I do want to get in Fab & RVP before GW27 though, possibly even both.

          Arshavin is a lazy git. You should never have him in your fantasy team. Chamakh is a backup for RVP. You really chose badly for your Arsenal coverage. Only 4 guaranteed starters for Arsenal; Song, Cesc, Nasri & RVP.

    I was fiddling with my team as a hypothetical that I could have after an early WC (with money in the bank to get Carroll back - upgrading Varney) and the possibility to cut back on Arsenal midfield shifting Nasri to ??? at this stage.

    Foster Gordon
    Vidic Skrtel Huth Nelson Bardsley
    Nani VdV Nasri Fabregas Adam
    Tevez Varney Welbeck

    Totally off the mark or ok?

    (I don't think I will do an early WC, so massively hypothetical)

      Im highly considering having both Fabregas and Nasri at this stage for double GW 27.. Two juicy home fixtures against Wolves and Stoke are very hard to ignore, yes im slightly biased but having both of them could reap huge rewards

            who to get rid then? and which cheap forward should i lean on to?

      Keepers.

      Fabianski - Begovic

      Schwarzer - Al-Habsi

      Gordon - Krul

      Not a bad team otherwise, although it would be preferable to have a more offensive strike force at the expense of some of your defenders.

    Morning all! Any advice on my team this weeek...

    Hart
    Baines, Elmo, Raphael, Kolarov (Williamson)
    Nani, VDV, Fabregas, Brunt (Adam)
    Tevez, Welbeck (Carroll)

    I was thinking Tevez to Torres this week. Any thoughts?

      If you want Liverpool coverage in defence then go for Skrtel.. He's a nailed on starter.. Personally I'm steering clear of their defence even for the double GW's

    MGP --> Gerrard
    Tevez --> Campbell

    Both double GW players

      No.

      Tevez is better long term and has Wolves at home GW 23.

      Downgrade on Cole if anyone.

    Really not sure what to do with my team, but I am leaning towards 3 different options:

    1 (the modest option):
    Kolarov -> Skrtel / Foster -> Kingson
    MGP -> Adam

    2 (the full retard):
    Foster -> Kingson
    MGP -> Adam
    Nasri -> Gerrard
    Carroll -> Varney

    3 (Something in between)

    So, Adam is guaranteed 4 points next GW for playing considering he played 90 minutes in both the games, i.e., 2 + 2 = 4.

    Please, correct me if my assumption is wrong.

    Reina
    Konchesky kolarov rafael
    Nani nasri Adam barton vdv
    Drogba torres

    Subs: welbeck, Coleman, shawx

    This includes mgp>Adam as free transfer
