Messrs Hodgson, Houllier, Grant and Ancelotti suffered restless nights as Wednesday defeats left all four teetering on the brink. In contrast, Alex Ferguson surely slept like a baby, as City and the woodwork denied a fluid Arsenal at the Emirates…

Arsenal played some sparkling football, struck the woodwork twice and drew some superb stops from Joe Hart in the City goal. Their heavyweight Fantasy talent – Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri and Robin Van Persie were all prominent on the night. Arsenal’s forthcoming fixtures are now very strong and include a double Gameweek with two home matches against Wolves and Stoke in Gameweek 27. Heavy investment in their attacking talent looks likely.

Johan Djourou was once again selected ahead of Sebastien Schillaci and subsequently earned a second consecutive clean sheet and second 2 point Bonus haul. Djourou looks to have nudged ahead of Schillaci in the pecking order and at just 4.2 in the FPL, he is offering a value route to Arsenal defensive returns. As long as Thomas Vermaelen remains sidelined and Arsene Wenger stays out of the transfer market, he looks a decent prospect.

Bacary Sagna’s straight red card for violent conduct will see him serve a three-match ban but he will only miss one league match. Sagna will sit out the FA Cup tie against Leeds, the Carling Cup semi-final with Ipswich and the league trip to West Ham.

Pablo Zabaleta’s rather unfortunate dismissal in the “incident†with Sagna will earn him a three-match ban, subject to a possible appeal from City. The full-back will miss the FA Cup tie with Leicester this weekend and league matches with Wolves and Villa. His absence could well allow Aleksandar Kolarov to earn a recall at left-back.

Roy Hodgson made an array of changes to his Liverpool starting lineup, perhaps surprisingly recalling both Paul Konchesky and Sotirios Kyrgiakos. The latter was badly at fault for Benjani’s opener and Blackburn’s second and was replaced on 51 minutes with the benched Dan Agger introduce. His arrival failed to settle a Liverpool defence that looked simply woeful and was exposed on several occasions by the Rovers attack.

In attacking terms Liverpool were similarly disappointing. Hodgson set his side out to carry more threat but they failed to turn possession into clean cut chances. Steven Gerrard’s typically did his best to drag the visitors back into the game but his spooned penalty summed up another awful night for Hodgson.

Despite the fine win, few Fantasy Managers are likely to be considering Blackburn’s assets with Morten Gamst-Pedersen now simmering. The Norwegian – a popular target a few Gameweek’s back, has now gone 7 starts without a goal and, despite the assist last night, his remaining owners will surely be shifting him out in favour of a double Gameweek alternative.

Chelsea’s dredful decline continued with defeat at Molineux. They managed just 3 attempts on target on all night and were unable to break down peg back the early goal from George Elokobi. It’s now just 1 clean sheet in the last 7 league games. In attacking terms the stats are just as damming – Carlo Ancelotti’s side have scored just 9 goals in their last 11, and 3 of those came in Sunday’s 3-3 with Villa. Their returns continue to look limited at both ends of the field.

Rafael Van der Vaart again confirmed his status as a Fantasy heavyweight with another goal, his ninth of the season, in Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat at Goodison. The Dutchman fired in multiple efforts and was a instrumental in the visitors’ set-piece routines – emphasising his importance and value for Fantasy Managers.

Gareth Bale was withdrawn by Harry Redknapp on 59 minutes of the match – the official line is that the Welshman had suffered “a number of knocks†and was generally fatigued after the hectic Christmas programme. Bale will surely earn a rest in the FA Cup tie with Charlton.

Seamus Coleman once more stood out as an “out of position†asset with a third goal of the season, his second in his last 3 starts. Coleman enjoyed a superb evening and fetched the maximum 3 Bonus Points as a result. He looks to have cemented the role on the right-flank right now and, despite not having a double Gameweek to come, he could earn further investment over the next few weeks.

Emile Heskey’s red for violent conduct in Villa’s 1-0 defeat to Sunderland will put him out of league matches with Birmingham and Man City. His absence could see Gabby Agbonlahor shifted to a lone striker role which in turn could re-introduce Marc Albrighton to the starting lineup. The winger was on the bench again last night, only seeing action late on.

Sunderland’s Phil Bardsley is another defensive option that raised his profile last night. He claimed his first goal of the season – a belting 25-yard effort, coupled with yet another clean sheet – Sunderland’s twelfth of the season. The win came at a cost for Steve Bruce’s side – David Meyler, having just returned from a long-term knee injury, sustained a blow to the same joint and faces another layoff; there are fears that he has damaged his cruciate knee ligament once again. More significantly for Fantasy Managers, Danny Welbeck sustained a hamstring injury. Bruce fears the worst on both counts…

“Meyler is a bad one…It is his cruciate ligament on the same knee as he did before and that is him out for six months at the very least…We will have to wait and see with Danny. He is going for a scan and I would not like to guess before we have the results, but that does not look like a good one either.â€

Sunderland face Newcastle next and nobody could have foreseen Leon Best’s impact for them against West Ham last night. Best came in for Shola Ameobi who suffered a knock in training and duly grabbed a hat-trick in the 5-0 win. Best had not previously scored for Newcastle in a competitive match. He will look to keep his starting role at Stevenage in the FA Cup but did get withdrawn with a slight injury having sealed his hat-trick.

Kevin Nolan was a more familiar name on the scoresheet for the Magpies – his goal and assist saw him blink on the Fantasy radar once again. That was Nolan’s ninth of the season as he continues to consistently provide returns from midfield for an FPL fee of 6.1. He will surely come into consideration in the coming weeks with Newcastle’s double to come in Gameweek 27.

Cheick Tiote and Steven Taylor also picked up knocks in last night’s game – the latter was forced off just after half-time, missing out on the Newcastle clean sheet. Both are immediate doubts for the weekend Cup tie.

Wigan earned a point at the Reebok with Ronnie Stam notching his first goal for the Latics. The result came at a cost with Chris Kirkland suffering concussion and, more significantly, Tom Cleverley sustaining a hamstring injury with Roberto Martinez already concerned

“Tom [Cleverley] felt his hamstring straight away and that’s bad news. We have to see what the degree of the soft tissue injury is. He is a young man so I hope it shouldn’t be too long.”

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Hi Folks,

Playing my wild card this week and this is the best team I can come up with. Any room for improvement?

    Foster / Stockdale
    Bardsley / Coleman / Rafael / Hangeland / Djourou
    Cesc / VDV / Nani / Adam / Nasri
    Carroll / Berbatov / Tevez

Fabianski is a better long term option. When/if Vermaelen is fit, Djourou may be subject to rotation. Begovic rotates well with Fabianski.

      Just a thought.

I did consider Fabianski but struggled to fit him in and I really want to keep Foster as he's been class this season.

I know what you mean about Djourou but he seems like a good option whilst Arsenal have decent fixtures and he is playing well.

Rooney was an option but I struggled to get my midfield how I wanted it with him in.

It makes complete sense to me to have both Cesc and Nasri given Arsenal's run of games.

I agree with having both Fabs and Nasri, they both look good. I can get the same midfield as you with Rooney and a defence of Coleman/Djourou/Rafael/Bardsley and Simpson and the same Are you a bit short of cash to do something similar?

      Fabianski, Begovic
      Rafael, Skrtel, Bramble, Evatt, Jara
Nani, Van Der Vaart, Gerrard, N’Zogbia, Adam

Additional notes......Nasri and Fabs played well together. The return of Fabs may not be a negative for Nasri owners. Saha lots of shots and Everton turning a corner but can he stay fit?

Barton was behind everything good about Newcastle....he ran the show.

As a Nasri owner my gut reaction come the next arsenal double was to swap him for Fab in the wildcard, but I am now seriously contemplating having both. I was really impressed with Nasri and Fabs last night and most weeks Nasri seems to match Fabs for pts if both are playing.

I often regret selling Barton when he got suspended, he would be my main choice for a Newcastle player come the double.

Pardew - hmmm, tell me more.

A total of £355m has been spent on transfers, £488m has been committed to wages for new players and those on existing contracts, while the initial takeover itself cost £210m.

Add to that £20m spent on stadium and training ground improvements, and the magical figure of £1.1 billion is reached.

That is more than Man United is worth.

But Berbatov scores and Drogba doesn't. Untill that changes, I'd go with Berb.

Chelsea are doing nothing to prove their place in any fantasy team right now imo.

Looks nice. I'm thinking along similar lines but want Hart in there.

      Hart/Carson
      Dann/Bardslay/Coleman/Djorou/Hangeland
      Fabregas/Nani/VDV/Adam/Barton
      Tevez/Berbatov/Carroll plus £1m

      May choose alternative to Barton.

Huth is a good option too though.

I think City defence is a must, but too much rotation in the back 4 so for me Hart is the only option.

I also want Dann, particularly for his goal threat so this has led me to a Hart/Dann combo rather than say Foster/Kolarov.

        Hey TM,

As an admin of a league, can you see team's rankings for the gameweek in one screen or you'd have to click on individual's?

I'm asking because if it's the latter then it's a bit of a chore clicking through 100+ names, isnt it?

If you are talking about the Mill Club then it will be worse after week 1 as the 1st weeks scores are the same as the weekly score without hits. I will know the score needed for the top million already. I can always do the teams with hits etc in a week or two as they could get knocked out that week. After 3 weeks, I'll be surprised if there are 70 teams left. The last GW score before hits is always on the right next to the overall score.

Oh yes, you're right. I was being a bit daft talking about team ranking without thinking of another the way to eliminate team using gw pts (including hits), duh!!

It's just the matter of factoring point hits now, isnt it? Anyway, it'd be fun seeing how many teams will go out first week.

Say you need 48 to continue in the comp. I eliminate the 47s & below straight away. Some of the 49s could have taken a hit, I will have to see their history to know what happened. I can just leave those teams in the comp & eliminate them in the next gameweek if there are too many 49-52 scores etc. This week the score needed is 37 but that is before the last game & autosubs. I only have 44 so could easily have been knocked out this round.

Keeper rotations for the rest of the season...

    Foster +

    - Begovic
    - Harper
    - Stockdale/Schwarzer

    Fabianski +

    - Begovic
    - Harper
    - Jussi

As odd as it seems, I wouldn't touch Gordon. Sunderland don't have any double gameweeks, tough fixtures, and their defense is among the cheapest to invest in. Bardsley, Bramble etc. It's cheap to get one of their defenders compared to getting say a Fulham or Birmingham defender.

Gordon has been one of my best acquisitions this season and I foolishly benched him this week. Although I admit the ship seems to have sailed if you haven't already brough him in. There was a time where Gordon and Jaaskelinen had 13 beautiful rotating fixtures in a row. That's more or less coming to an end now and with no double gameweeks, it doesn't make sense to invest.

The pairings you've higlighted seem to be about the best out there for the rest of the season.

I've struggled with keeper rotation I have to say. A bugger when your bigger scorer is sitting on the bench. When WCing I'm going Hart (playing every game) plus a cheapo like Carson who will preety much never play.

          *Checks

          I've seen better:

GW 26-28 - Their home/away fixtures don't rotate at all.
GW 29-34 - Fair enough - nice rotation
GW 35-38 - Back to not rotating at all.

So of the 13 weeks you've suggested, I make 6 to be good rotating gameweeks. Not for me bud.

The whole point of keeper rotation (as far as I'm concerned) is so one gets a home game. Yes, the away games arn't the worst out there but it's rare that teams keep cleanie's away from home. Especially teams like Sunderland and Birmingham.

Guess it's agree to disagree for now but there are some pretty nice combos out there I'd urge you to look at, where you'll get a home fixture every week.

Fabianski/Gomes anyone? *Slaps self in face for even considering.

im just going to rotate cheap defenders til the end of the season. it was my original plan but ended up starting with that and then going for vidic, baines, johnson etc.

i just need all the big guns to perform now and im sorted..

If you take Drogs, Rooney and Lamps out of the equation. You dont need that much money after all. Hence, more investment in defence.

            That sounds tempting.

I have Tevez,RVP[or Berba],VDV,Nani,FAB and I have a very very descent Defence of

            Coleman Rafael Bardsley Kolarov Djourou.

I Just cant fit in another High profile attacker,it would weaken my team immensely!

    Foster (Jussi)
    Kolarov, Rafael, Bardsley (Carr, Foley)
    Nani, Nasri, VDV, Adam Barton
    Drogba, Tevez (Carroll)

Not sure how or where to use the WC for my team. Don't feel like i need to make wholesale changes. Sure I'd like Jussi > 4.1 or something and probably Kolarov and Drogba out.. But that can happen in the next weeks.. Any ideas guys?? 1.6 remaining..

Morning all! Finally,a good GW as I managed to break into the top 100k after a long, long time(since GW 12) with Evatt and captain Adam's second game still to go.Can I dream on about finishing in the top 20k or 10k come the end of the season?Or does this second WC mean that teams inside the top 50k can neutralise pretty much any resistance from the chasing pack?

Think about it. The people who are top at the moment, the majority of them started out very poor. One big Gameweek where you pick the best captain and have some differentials and you're back up there.

Anybody else considering Keane as a cheap third striker if he gets a move somewhere? Guaranteed starter and good goal and assist threat for 4.8m. I'm thinking of it because it allows heavy investment in midfield which seems better than forwards this year.
