The FA Cup may often be regarded as the nightmare of the Fantasy Manager with distraction, exhaustion and injury but a few consequences that can unwittingly cripple their teams with no regard for the many hundreds of thousands of Carlos Tevez owners, and me, just hoping he gets a nice old rest this weekend, for example.

What it does allow us is a little extra time to simmer down and take in what has happened in Fantasy up until now, and, after hectic schedule and illness-based roadblocks, a little time can be spent looking at the goings-on in all things league a little over halfway through the season…

Fantasy Premier League

The Good…

Big Poppa is, of course, our first order of merit and the Fantasy Football Scout league is firing on all cylinders. The snow may have knocked a few folks off course but calm heads prevail with a nice gap between first and second in the League of Leagues. Luckily enough though, it’s our dilligent subscribers to Scout Membership who fill that second spot.

Mark Rutter and The Rutz Nutz take pride of place as number one manager in the number one league in the world, with over five and a half thousand envious managers looking on with equal parts scorn, pride and jealousy. He’ll also be getting 18 points off his bench come Wednesday evening, the lucky swine.

Hot on Mark’s heels are the likes of Nathan Turner, Celso Loureiro, Steven Laverick and James McCall as the top five is rounded out. More commonly known posters amongst the Scout Community such as Camzy, Grimaldi and Jafalad all continue their fights not far behind too. One of Fantasy Football Scout’s older friends Spiderman returns to his 08/09 form and may once again fight until the end for that crown. Sour grapes also start early as some chap named I’m Not Marshal Foch gets frontpage action at 36th in the Scout league.

As for our members, we don’t want to let anyone miss their chance for a spotlight action. December saw The Karachi Kid clinch the monthly prize with a slender one point win over board poster Cunning Stunts in a hotly contested affair. Back in November, Scott Woods pulled out a healthy lead over second place to join the realms of champions while even further back in time Terry Goodwin won the October contest – our own Granville not far off calls of a conspiracy in 8th for that month. All three of the aforementioned winners won a free £25 bet with Paddy Power for their efforts.

The Head to Head leagues are starting to build a bit more shape to them as victories continue to push the men at the top to greater heights, starting with Comfy Coxy at the top of the whole tree holding off Russman and Roger C. I’m Not Marshal Foch pops in again to stick the knife into my season, putting me to shame with his first place in our second Head to Head league, holding off his good personal friend tinoss and the gallic poster gros. Head to Head three is as close as two very close things with a four way tie between Mark, Defoe Rules, Mr Blonde and Anorak split only by rank. The father of all things Scout Mark doth win that war in 6396th place.

A clear leader is seen in our fourth league as denial has a handy cushion of more than two games over closest rivals Just One More Thing and Wes. League five sees Don Corleone (in second) sleeping with The Fish in first while plucky Granville once again looms large. Cesc, Drogs and Caroll is our sixth leader after twenty-one gameweeks, William Coventry and Don are trying their best to rattle him out of there.

Greghammer95 (or whatever he calls himself now) leads the last of our seven select entry league as EasyLuckyFree challenges alongside da Beeeez, my colleague and fellow scout getting his match timing just right to take his team ranked in the 400 thousands to third place. The most competitive league, and also most requiring of luck, is our Reserve League and by merit of ranking alone Kenny Coffey sits pretty ahead of Graeme Matthew (who has stuck around since September) and Evan Donaldson.

The Bad…
Sticking out like a sore thumb are those managers at the bottom of our leagues. Those who think they are doing badly can perhaps afford a rare smile by comparison, while if you are one of the few afforded this unfortunate glimpse perhaps it’ll provide a kick up the posterior. I sure hope it will, not least because I have to give my own team an unfortunate mention.

The seven managers at the bottom of our Head to Head leagues are BigAdz, Andy (that’s me, what pride!), Bedknobs and Boomsticks, Sojourners, Honkey, Davysteen and pewty. We must all try harder or the threat of relegation currently looming large will likely turn to reality.

Tom Sanders gets the wooden spoon in the overall league with a score of -88 plastered against his name. Something tells me he just might have a different agenda. Or a screw loose.

The Ugly… (otherwise known as the Scout team)

Anyone wanting to compare how their side is doing to those in the Contributor’s League can do just that. For a league with only a dozen managers a ranking of 188 sees the likes of Mark, Granville, Sir Paulos, Pure Olivia and, running away leader, Foch undoubtedly proud of their pooled rankings. Fresh faced Scout johnfinlay gets a mulligan thanks to being new to all these proceedings so the likes of da Beeeez, Greek Fan and myself at the bottom are already looking ahead to July. Where would you drop in were you part of this “elite” breed?

Metro Fantasy Football

Our experiment in the wares on offer from the folks over at Metro sees a fan of Pink Floyd sitting pretty at the top of the Scout League and in tenth place overall, very much in the running for the prizes on offer from our free newspaper. All in all just another brick in the wall for Peter Jones. The first three familiar faces I see (apologies if I missed you) attempting to muster up a fight against the leaders are Aldershot Rejects, Big Dunc and Sir Paulos – another two successful enough members of the Scout team in the top 500 overall and very capable of a push on further.

European Adventures

The midweek continental adventures start in the Champions League where the best of the best (and Bursapoor) competed against each for six gameweeks of group stage action. The Scout League is celebrating first spot with a healthy lead as does it’s best manager: Mario Jiang. A couple of our sites more known posters (d2b and Waldaz) are trying their hardest in fourth and fifth place to head into the knockout stages with a coup on the cards. Down in 53rd place I haven’t given up hope of retaining the title of Scout champion in this here league, as unlikely as it may be.

The Fantasy Managers with a real hard edge as nothing more than gluttons for punishment are the small band competing in Europa League fantasy football. Many real managers seem to use the Europa League as a chance to rest and rotate their squads, which makes picking your team here devilishly hard. The manager having coped best so far with these issues is Akers, my fellow Scout and proprietor of our Cup competitions, with a healthy lead. The top ten also includes well known posters such Dick Fran Dyke, PDM Allstars and MFaulkner (who hasn’t even made a transfer yet. Shocking.) hoping the leader will trip up soon. On a personal note, I’m sorely disappointed that I won’t be able to up my Borussia Dortmund ante from two to three of the players, a breath of fresh air sorely missed.

That’s pretty much everything well and truly covered for now, all things going to plan we’ll hopefully be seeing you sooner than the most recent gap in proceedings. Maybe I’ll have to climbed to 19th out of 20 too. One can dream.

The City game is a double gameweek, plus for 4m you just need to rotate him with your other cheap defenders. Which is what I would do if I bring him in. Plus looks like he would be good for a few assists.

Yeah i know but the other one is another away match isn't it? TBH i haven't really had a good look at any WC team yet but for £4m he is probably worth considering. Do you know who rotates well with Villa?

    Hi everyone,
I am thinking of playing my wild card this week and these are my thoughts for the 'perfect' taking into consideration the upcoming gameweeks...your thoughts would be appreciated.

    Rafael Sagna Hangeland Coleman Alcaraz

      Nice attack, bad defense.

Goalie combo is really short-term and defense needs work. Sagna is banned for the next game, and is too expensive. Get Fabianski or Djourou for cheap Arsenal defense.

Alcaraz is also a poor buy. Get a Blackpool defender. Cheap as chips, and you can use them for double gameweeks.

Forward line and midfield are good. Risky on Rvp, but could payoff handsomely. Be wary of the bench problem. You're going to have to bench one of Tevez, VdV, Van Persie in GW 24.

Hey Guys, just looking for a bit of advice, my team is linked, ive debated all week about using a WC but can see that many changes that i want to make to be honest, i still have both WC's, any1 see any big problems with my team?

my plan for the next few weeks is, torres out again for Tevez or Rooney and replace Welbeck, cant force myself to get rid of Drogba, but also thinking about that, what would the best 3 strikers choice be from next GW on? money being no object.

    Cheers!

because you have nasri and fab you can justify selling fab, and bringing in RVP will give you more ARS cover which will work well, but i dont know about going for Malouda, as when things arent going their way, which lets be honest things definately arent for chelsea atm, malouda always seems to be first taken off!

Adam, but if you do N'Zogbia defo, have you thought about Dzeko and N'Zogbia?I reckon he'll be 9.5ish. Fabregas and Varney would be my sort of choice but out of the two. It would have to be Nasri and Odemwingie

Yeah, I currently have Nasri but I need a differential or two from my rival because his teams looking a lot like mine.. I'm not gonna get Dzeko just yet. I have Adam atm as well. My midfield is Nasri, Nani, Vdv, Adam, Silva and I'm getting in Fabregas for Silva.

You think Dzeko will start against wolves?

Then your all set really, Who do you have up top then? Silva -> Fabregas is good, if you have Tevez then there is no point getting Dzeko, but thats different with Fabs/RVP.

Hmm, I want Nasri and Fabregas for my wildcard (GW 27), but I want Fabregas ASAP, and the only way to get him seems to be Nasri --> Fabregas, but then I'd lose value on him.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how I could get Cesc in this week?

Or if it's better to have Cesc and RVP instead in my wildcard?

I'm at an annoying stage of the season, because I know almost exactly what I want my wildcard team to look like, but I don't have a clue what transfers to do for the next 2 or 3 weeks.

Had Foster from the start so wouldn't be that expensive and I think despite their inconsistent defence 4.8 for Fabianski is a steal. Suppose but would have Nani as cover for Man Utd but would have no Liverpool and under Kenny it would be silly to get rid of Torres having already got him.

Don't think I should wildcard anyway, could have this team for a points hit this week..

        Foster, Jussi
        Rafael, Kolarov, Djourou, Coleman, Jara

    Getting some crazy WC ideas.

    Team for GW 24.

    Fabianski, Begovic

    S. Taylor, Eardley, Rafael, Baird, Coleman

Fabregas, Nani, Van Der Vaart, N'Zogbia, Adam

    Tevez, Berbatov, Odemwingie

    7.5 in the bank.

Thinking here is that N'Zog will outscore Gerrard in GW 24. Having it like this means that I can upgrade either Adam, N'Zog or Odem as I see fit.

Will N'Zog outscore Gerrard over GW 24 and 25?

No Chelsea coverage after this week until GW 28. Look at their fixtures and how that coincides with good fixtures for Arsenal and ManUtd.

My team this week is good actually (on paper anyway)

No I don't think he will. I do think rooney will be worth the extra over berbatov for rest of the season. Do you fancy berbs to play both in gw24? Only 3 days between, I can see fergie giving Hernandez a start and he's said that Owen still has a part to play this season. Not convinced berbs will start v tottenham either with utd probably matching them with 3 in the centre.

        Good points.

Berbatov is more flexible than Rooney though.

I could do Berbatov + Odem > Rooney + Rvp easily, whereas having Rooney in from the start means that I'm limited to only getting Rvp or a cheap striker.

                First season on this site.

I was always a decent player, I won manager of the month for my school's FPL a few times, but wasn't really that into it.

World Cup Fantasy Football last year rekindled my love of the game.

Then I discovered this site and TotalFPL, and now I'm pretty much a "hardcore" player.

The last time I played FPL before this season was 06/07.

                I quit after 10 weeks.

Same really, I found this site halfway through last season and it all went from there. Last year was my first season but I didn't take it seriously at all at the start, made transfers most weeks but didn't look at things like fixtures.

Only did I start taking it more seriously was when I realised how people took it so seriously in my leagues, so I found this site and now I'm probably the one who takes it the most seriously, how things change eh. 😉

Right, so Arsenal are almost certainly going to miss GW28, which means that Spurs will too, annoying seeing as they both have a nice DGW the week before. Then if Birmingham get to the final, Chelsea will only have one game that week against Man Utd and if West Ham get to the final, Liverpool won't have a game.

Going to be a horrible week that one is..

I read somewhere too that if utd and chelsea get knocked out of the fa cup then that gw28 fixture will probably be brought forward to the next fa cup weekend at the end of jan

Yeah probably, likewise with our game against Wolves, if they lose in their replay against Doncaster the game will definitely be moved to that weekend. The police really don't want to play it at night but have no choice at the moment.

This has probably been mentiond - but I haven't been on for a couple of days. What happened to all the transfers of Adam. I would have thought his price would have went up by 0.1.

Oh ok I must have mistakenly thought that protection just means the price won't change during that period, but as soon as it finishes those transfers become live. Shows I am still learning. 🙂 Not tht it matters too much - just about everyone would have got that 1 increase if it happened anyway.

btw Camzy - what are your tactics regarding getting your team's price up. After I realised what to do in my 1st season (after I WCd in Round 7), I have got the team to 105.6. Is it just a matter of good tactical trading by watching for potential price jumps or do you also work hard during a WC week to get the extra increases?

        Make transfers early.

I jumped on the Malouda and Bale wagons early on in the season and they've rewarded me with a lot of team value.

Nasri trading has also made my lots.

Bought at 7.3 (should have been 7.2 if I wasn't careless!) sold at 7.5. Bought back at 7.6 and now he costs 8.4.

Every 0.1 counts. Try and sell players on when they're 0.2 up or 0.4 etc.

Keep certain players that have gone up a lot too. Nani was a mistake on my part. Sold him for two weeks for Arteta, realized my mistake and bought him back for a 0.3 loss.

Van Der Vaart I held even through his injury spell when everyone was selling for Cahill, now I've been rewarded. Bought him at 7.6.

Also, jump in on players that are just about to go up (almost always). It means that you won't have to worry about losing value on them until they go down by 0.2.

Just little things like that. Always watch to see how you can maximize your team value. I tell you, it matters.

Thanks - pretty much what I have done. I try trtading late in the week to allow flexibility, but am not afraid to do it early on occasion if a player I want that GW anyway is about to jump in price.

Probably the only thing I didn't do was gain heaps over the WC, so maybe that is best played over a long break to try and maximise players going up 0.2.

          Anyway - thanks again.

OK I *think* i've figured out what im gonna do..
    Team right now is..
    Begovic, Kingson
    Coleman, Baines, Kolarov, Simpson, Skrtel
    Nani, Nasri, Bale, VDV, Adam
    Tevez, Torres, Carrol

Between now and GW 24 bring in
    N'Zogbia, Evra/Rafael and Berbatov/Rooney for Bale, Kolarov/Baines and Tevez

Wildcard it after GW 25 with team setup for dgw 27.
Then have 2 free transfers to bring prepare for the United and Chelsea Dgw.

    Sounds good yay or nay?

    WC Team for GW 24.

    Changed again...

    Foster, Begovic

    Rafael, Coleman, Djourou, Eardley, Simpson

Nani, Van Der Vaart, Fabregas, Gerrard, Adam

    Tevez, Rooney, Campbell

Isn't it amazing to be able to afford Gerrard, Fabregas, Van Der Vaart, Tevez, Rooney and Nani all in the same team?

        Djourou.

It's always possible to switch to Fabianski from Foster, but you can't do it the other way around.

If Djourou gets dropped, I'll get Fabianski and Dann instead.
