The FA Cup may often be regarded as the nightmare of the Fantasy Manager with distraction, exhaustion and injury but a few consequences that can unwittingly cripple their teams with no regard for the many hundreds of thousands of Carlos Tevez owners, and me, just hoping he gets a nice old rest this weekend, for example.

What it does allow us is a little extra time to simmer down and take in what has happened in Fantasy up until now, and, after hectic schedule and illness-based roadblocks, a little time can be spent looking at the goings-on in all things league a little over halfway through the season…

Fantasy Premier League

The Good…

Big Poppa is, of course, our first order of merit and the Fantasy Football Scout league is firing on all cylinders. The snow may have knocked a few folks off course but calm heads prevail with a nice gap between first and second in the League of Leagues. Luckily enough though, it’s our dilligent subscribers to Scout Membership who fill that second spot.

Mark Rutter and The Rutz Nutz take pride of place as number one manager in the number one league in the world, with over five and a half thousand envious managers looking on with equal parts scorn, pride and jealousy. He’ll also be getting 18 points off his bench come Wednesday evening, the lucky swine.

Hot on Mark’s heels are the likes of Nathan Turner, Celso Loureiro, Steven Laverick and James McCall as the top five is rounded out. More commonly known posters amongst the Scout Community such as Camzy, Grimaldi and Jafalad all continue their fights not far behind too. One of Fantasy Football Scout’s older friends Spiderman returns to his 08/09 form and may once again fight until the end for that crown. Sour grapes also start early as some chap named I’m Not Marshal Foch gets frontpage action at 36th in the Scout league.

As for our members, we don’t want to let anyone miss their chance for a spotlight action. December saw The Karachi Kid clinch the monthly prize with a slender one point win over board poster Cunning Stunts in a hotly contested affair. Back in November, Scott Woods pulled out a healthy lead over second place to join the realms of champions while even further back in time Terry Goodwin won the October contest – our own Granville not far off calls of a conspiracy in 8th for that month. All three of the aforementioned winners won a free £25 bet with Paddy Power for their efforts.

The Head to Head leagues are starting to build a bit more shape to them as victories continue to push the men at the top to greater heights, starting with Comfy Coxy at the top of the whole tree holding off Russman and Roger C. I’m Not Marshal Foch pops in again to stick the knife into my season, putting me to shame with his first place in our second Head to Head league, holding off his good personal friend tinoss and the gallic poster gros. Head to Head three is as close as two very close things with a four way tie between Mark, Defoe Rules, Mr Blonde and Anorak split only by rank. The father of all things Scout Mark doth win that war in 6396th place.

A clear leader is seen in our fourth league as denial has a handy cushion of more than two games over closest rivals Just One More Thing and Wes. League five sees Don Corleone (in second) sleeping with The Fish in first while plucky Granville once again looms large. Cesc, Drogs and Caroll is our sixth leader after twenty-one gameweeks, William Coventry and Don are trying their best to rattle him out of there.

Greghammer95 (or whatever he calls himself now) leads the last of our seven select entry league as EasyLuckyFree challenges alongside da Beeeez, my colleague and fellow scout getting his match timing just right to take his team ranked in the 400 thousands to third place. The most competitive league, and also most requiring of luck, is our Reserve League and by merit of ranking alone Kenny Coffey sits pretty ahead of Graeme Matthew (who has stuck around since September) and Evan Donaldson.

The Bad…
Sticking out like a sore thumb are those managers at the bottom of our leagues. Those who think they are doing badly can perhaps afford a rare smile by comparison, while if you are one of the few afforded this unfortunate glimpse perhaps it’ll provide a kick up the posterior. I sure hope it will, not least because I have to give my own team an unfortunate mention.

The seven managers at the bottom of our Head to Head leagues are BigAdz, Andy (that’s me, what pride!), Bedknobs and Boomsticks, Sojourners, Honkey, Davysteen and pewty. We must all try harder or the threat of relegation currently looming large will likely turn to reality.

Tom Sanders gets the wooden spoon in the overall league with a score of -88 plastered against his name. Something tells me he just might have a different agenda. Or a screw loose.

The Ugly… (otherwise known as the Scout team)

Anyone wanting to compare how their side is doing to those in the Contributor’s League can do just that. For a league with only a dozen managers a ranking of 188 sees the likes of Mark, Granville, Sir Paulos, Pure Olivia and, running away leader, Foch undoubtedly proud of their pooled rankings. Fresh faced Scout johnfinlay gets a mulligan thanks to being new to all these proceedings so the likes of da Beeeez, Greek Fan and myself at the bottom are already looking ahead to July. Where would you drop in were you part of this “elite” breed?

Metro Fantasy Football

Our experiment in the wares on offer from the folks over at Metro sees a fan of Pink Floyd sitting pretty at the top of the Scout League and in tenth place overall, very much in the running for the prizes on offer from our free newspaper. All in all just another brick in the wall for Peter Jones. The first three familiar faces I see (apologies if I missed you) attempting to muster up a fight against the leaders are Aldershot Rejects, Big Dunc and Sir Paulos – another two successful enough members of the Scout team in the top 500 overall and very capable of a push on further.

European Adventures

The midweek continental adventures start in the Champions League where the best of the best (and Bursapoor) competed against each for six gameweeks of group stage action. The Scout League is celebrating first spot with a healthy lead as does it’s best manager: Mario Jiang. A couple of our sites more known posters (d2b and Waldaz) are trying their hardest in fourth and fifth place to head into the knockout stages with a coup on the cards. Down in 53rd place I haven’t given up hope of retaining the title of Scout champion in this here league, as unlikely as it may be.

The Fantasy Managers with a real hard edge as nothing more than gluttons for punishment are the small band competing in Europa League fantasy football. Many real managers seem to use the Europa League as a chance to rest and rotate their squads, which makes picking your team here devilishly hard. The manager having coped best so far with these issues is Akers, my fellow Scout and proprietor of our Cup competitions, with a healthy lead. The top ten also includes well known posters such Dick Fran Dyke, PDM Allstars and MFaulkner (who hasn’t even made a transfer yet. Shocking.) hoping the leader will trip up soon. On a personal note, I’m sorely disappointed that I won’t be able to up my Borussia Dortmund ante from two to three of the players, a breath of fresh air sorely missed.

That’s pretty much everything well and truly covered for now, all things going to plan we’ll hopefully be seeing you sooner than the most recent gap in proceedings. Maybe I’ll have to climbed to 19th out of 20 too. One can dream.

With goalies there is no rotation risk. There is either "in" or "out" (o gosh, this sounds like something off a corny reality TV series!)

The good thing about the Stoke keepers, is that they're the same price. So even if Begovic gets dropped, it's a straight swap to Sorensen.

WC team similar to most on FFS. I will prob end up with 12-13 of those players. Risk is that Livpool score big in gw 24-25. I think luck will play a big role in selecting correct Capt for gw 24.

Problem with selecting dj campbell is who do you bench for gw 24? Tevez? Personally Im sticking with Carroll(it makes the benching for gw 24 easy)

Why gw 27? Do you really want NEw/Wolves/Stoke players for their doubles?

I can WC in gw 24, makes 7 changes, get rid of "duds" like Kyrgiakos, get 8 double gw players for gw 24 and with no further hits end up with another 8 gw players in gw 27.

Doubt many of the "star" players will be involved in facup replays. Transfers...Dzeko moving to City. Done deal. Wont affect the rooneys/Fabregas's of the world.

I think it depends everyone's situation.

wk27 is where it's at man. You want to leave it to the last possible moment to have the final big change to your team.(hit free)
Who knows what's gonna happen between you/anyone else wildcarding in week 24 and week27.
Injuries, transfers etc. Why blow early, the one thing that could clean up a potential mess.

Hello all. Been away for a while, and have been reading up a little on the site and would really appreciate some feedback.

Is getting Baines and Coleman a dangerous move? Since Coleman is looking to be permanently OOP, it would be the same as being able to play a 6 man midfield with 2 defenders. To me this sounds like an amazing thing to be able to do, but there MUST be some reason not to do it.

Thanks for the feedback in advance mates.

It's the same as doubling up on any defence - not much wrong with it if both players are good picks on their own, but obviously it reduces the flexibility/rotatibility of your defence.

Given that Cahill is gone and Everton have no DGWs coming up, there are probably better options than Baines at the moment.

See how Gerrard plays today. If he's stopped his juvenile sulk and can get the rest to remember how to play like they give a sh*t, his DGW may just swing it, given Arsenal fixture congestion.

So guys I've been reading your comments over the past few days and its been really helping me set up my wildcard team. I know a lot of you believe its early in this gw to play it but my teams been returning some poor points recently and I lost my top spot in my mini-league which I've held onto for months, travesty!

my team is linked but here it is so you dont have to navigate away (if your on aussie internet like me thats a life saver...)

    Fabianski, Stockdale,

    Hangeland, Coleman, Kyrgiakos, Djourou, Bardsley,

    Nasri, Nani, Adam, VDV, Dempsey,

    Drogba, Tevez, Berbatov

    Thanks for your feedback!

We have very similar failings over last few games. I will give Chelski players one last chance to shine before pos WC for GW24, when we may also have date for Birm/Eve game. Drogba still ties up too much for his returns imo,and Stockdale only in for a few weeks, I would want permanent keepers for my WC.

Teams are likely to become more similar over the season, no point dropping big point scorers just to be different. Heres where the luck comes, finding the odd one or two differentials before others and getting rid when their form drops.

Same, I want to have either lamps or drogs too so hoping they show some form before then.

I think the smart money is on playing WC for 26 actually so you have 2 freebies for 28.

I have had 2 weeks off exercise apart from cricket yesterday. Starting again this week as I'll be back at work & have to lose the Xmas kgs. Weeks like these are easier with no action for a few days.

I am so sore from cricket yesterday. Had all of last season off after having some knee cartliage replaced - so no aerobic fitness at all. After batting 25 overs I was stuffed. Just went for a swim to loosen up. Still pretty warm now outside.

We had our 1st game for 3 weeks. It was a 40 over one dayer. Ended up bowling 8 overs, abit sore today in the bowling arm but apart from that it's ok. Took a nice catch yesterday but we just lost. 🙁

Yeah - we had a similar break (and also 40 over One Dayer). We batted 1st (I opened but more of a leggie) got 69 and then didn't need to bowl. Catches at slip and cow corner. Easy win. Playing cricket means I miss the usual EPL cutoff time if there are late changes though (unless I leave straight after game which is a bit nerdy!)

I've been training up since the end of November to make sure I get a spot in my school team's first XI football team. I had 3 days off over Christmas and that's about it. I'm in the gym 4 times a week and playing twice a week, which is normally a game with 1 hour halves.

    Hey guys,
my team for the upcoming GW is
    Foster (Krul)
    Vidic Bardsley Kolarov
    Brunt Adam Nani Nasri VdV
    Torres Drogba
    (Carroll Jara Evatt) bank 1.9

I think it might be the best to save my transfer as midfield and forward line looks good for this week. I could improve my defence but then an additional transfer for GW24 seems to be more important.
    What do you think?

    Morning all,
I’ve been sat messing around trying to get my w/c team in shape that will be done for gw 27 it’s the following:
    Foster
    Djourou Hutton Simpson
    Adam Fabregas Vdv Ferguson nani
    Carroll Van persie
    Subs
    Begovic Coleman Rafael tevez
I will have 10 players with dgw’s the exception been nani. What do people think? I know anything could happen between now and then but I don’t think it’s that bad. I would have 4.8 left over which means I could swap van persie to Rooney or drogba the following week, and have some spare cash to maybe upgrade one of the defenders the week after that. What do people think?

    Nani Nasri VDV Adam Etherington
    Drogba Tevez (Carroll)

I have 1.9 im the bank with 2 free transfers

    A. Konchesky -> Skirtel
    B. Etheringtin -> NZog

    Which one guys?

guys need a quick bit of advice on when to play the wilcard....was originally thinking in time for gameweek 27 but realised that the carling cup final is during gameweek 28 therefore it is likely to affect the arsenal spurs game (arsenal likely to make the final)....i'm thinking some people might load up on these players for their double in gameweek 27 and either the west ham liverpool game or birmingham chelsea game....

everyone seems to be playing it in gameweek 24 now? is that the wisest move? therefore people have 2 free transfers for gameweek 28?

There is no "right" time for everyone, it depends what your team is like now. If you have iffy players, now might be right to get best points for GW24 and transfers available for following weeks. Linking your team will make specific advice or opinions possible for your team.

If Konch retains his place a four point could give 7dbl players. If Chelsea continue to play badly in 23 and don't put Blackburn to the sword the WC would give you finance to really play around and find the best options 24-27 with odd transfers for emergency repairs. It depends how many dbl hd players you want in 24, some teams don't offer much imo.

Looks a standard FFS template apart from Davies & Carroll.

Serious rotation issues coming for Tevez, or an attacking partner?

Wow! Quiet day on FFS. 1 page from 03.30 to 11.30 is this a record?

    Scouts -
Was just looking at the projections bit in the Members Area (first time I've looked at it since the start of the season), does that section get updated or do you leave it after the first week to see how right/wrong you were? I only ask as Andy Carroll is down for 13 goals (he's already scored 11 I hope for more than two before the end).
How do you think you'll rank Dzeko?

    Which is better:

    A) Vidic, Fabregas, DJ Campbell
    B) Djourou, Nasri, Torres

First one. Torres makes B lose its appeal - I would wait and see if Torres finds some inspiration under the new manager

Fabregas could be a pretty nice differential for a couple of weeks too I guess
